I'm a Hospital Corpsman (navy combat medic) and want to go into psychiatry. Currently at the tail end of my service waiting to hear back from a few UC schools for undergrad. My first post in the military was a mental health ward. The night and day difference he talked about - seeing a patient at their worst vs seeing them after weeks/months of meds and therapy. It's truly the most rewarding thing I've ever experienced, a kin to bringing people back from the dead.
Hi Dane did you hear back from those UC’s yet? I just applied as well, I’m curious do you know anything about now it’s possible to pay for all this college ?
@@JackofTrades21 I was in the military for 6 years so the government pays for my entire undergraduate, they also give me a monthly allowance of $2517 a month, plus disability. I'm also utilizing FAFSA, grants, etc. As for medical school - I will need to take our loans. But starting pay for most psychiatrists in California is around $150-$200 an hour/$200,000 a year. When I'm making that kind of money I can handle student loans.
@@EzraB123 that’s pretty amazing, if you have the ability within yourself to do all that you’ve done already I’m sure you will be a practicing psychiatrist one day or whatever you choose to be. The military is really cool and offer some cool things but if I’m being honest I feel these days it is too political, what happened recently in Kabul really just scared me right out of the military as these kids just died and nobody really cared and it really wasn’t for a great reason. So that being said I really would not like to put my life in the hands of others unless there is some great reward. If there was a way I would obviously love to get a doctorates degree major in several different courses take a ton of classes because the world is infinitely interesting, thanks for the advice. So you’re saying the military is paying for your college did you do ROTC? Did you enlist and receive the G.I. Bill?
@@JackofTrades21 yeah I knew Max, he was the corpsman killed in the bombing in Kabul. We went through a training course on camp pendleton together right before he deployed. My battalion got told August 1st that we were going to Afghanistan to evacuate Kabul. It fell to another unit at the last minute, but that could have easily been any of us. It's apart of the job. I already went to Syria but was never in immediate danger while I was there, never left the base, which was firmly in Kurdish territory. I've leaving the military with a plethora of mental health issues. And I will say without any hesitation that the military attracts some of the absolute worst people I have ever met. I'm pretty much taken care of for the rest of my life, but not without costs. I enlisted in 2016. Anyone who does ROTC is made fun of in the military lol. If you ever do it stay away from any job that puts you in a combat role.
Being a psyc doctor, I wonder if he’s genuinely down to earth or knows what it takes to make people like you. Either way, he’s my favorite doc so far on this series ♥️
Why because all you all are minipulative? Think you know people's minds and you dont. Your glorified drug dealers. An you will all be exposed one day. You know the drugs you prescribe people are trash. Anyone that knows anything knows those phyc meds are garbage.
I’m more than half way through my Masters program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling to become a license professional counselor (LPC) and I’m about to start my practicum (Winter 2023) and internship (spring/summer 2023) soon. It’s always great to see someone else passionate about mental health and treating patients/clients. Way too go Dr. Goodman!
I love your interview - authentic, rich and full. I like to put an emphasis on what Dr. said about vulnerability. Indeed the psych field involves so much stressors specially in witnessing and knowing people at their rock bottom. Currently I'm a Psychology student, a psychiatrist in the making. This made my day. Thank you so much.

This is actually very normal in super competitive fields…. I know people who applied to over 70, didn’t get in for two years and finally got into on of the top schools. Some years can be like choosing between Olympic gold medal winners and World record holders.
@@visionvixxen omg thats awlful! They need to make more medical programs then. As the 2 schools here just take 60 students each. Im not sure how many the osteopath programs take..

What an awesome 73 q interview. Especially from Jake, we really do see the passion he has for the field he is in. Much luck and blessings to the two of you guys!
Dr. Goodman, thank you for being a psychiatrist! My children's lives were vastly improved (and in one case, saved) by the members of their mental health teams. No matter how empathetic a pediatrician or family med doctor might be, it's not the same as having the background, and most importantly, the knowledge of prescribing for adolescents. It's not for the faint of heart, for sure!
This interview is gonna be a life changer for me. I've been feeling a strong love towards psychology and medicine at the same time since my early teenage. But in our Asian culture, Psychiatry isn't regarded as something cool profession to take. Maybe that's why, Asians are too vulnerable to mental health issues. I've always been in a dilemma that should I take psychiatry or not. But at the last phase of this video, I grew up courage and made up my mind that, no matter what,I won't let anybody to snatch my dream to ba Neuro psychiatrist. I'm a med aspirant, within few months, admission process is gonna happen, and I'm promising myself, I will not give up. I born to be a psychiatrist and I know it🌻🙏🏻
Im a PA here and worked closely with many surgery residents and other residents who work in the OR and this guy is a breath of fresh air. He says how it is unlike any one else on youtube. Most people just act like its sooo great being in med school and this and that but I was really happy to see this guy be realistic about it. Any pre-med students out there listen to this guy!
Cannabis hyperemesis and the treatment was something I also found quite interesting. The treatment in the ED is generally capsaicin applied to the chest and abdomen, OR hot showers. Cannabis HE in some people (mainly long term users of cannabis) causes the TRPV1 receptors to inactivate. It's believed that the capsaicin or hot water essentially stimulates the nocicepters cutaneously, and thus results in reactivation ofTRPV1 firing which restores proper nervous system singaling. TRPV1 is found in a few places, but the two key areas here are gastric enteric tissue, and cutaneous tissue.
I follow Jake on UA-cam and he just has the same lovely feel to him in this interview. I wish he had been a psychiatrist in my care team over the last 30 years or even into my future. I think I'd have had better outcomes with his wisdom and support.
The perfect job for Jake! & my dream job! Been a tough semester as a pre-med and "protect your mental health" was exactly the sign I needed.. Thank you!!!

I don't see these kind of vlogs anywhere abt psychiatry and so I was so happy to finally have watched it! Thank you for this!
Dr. Goodman's interview is one of the best interviews you have conducted. Shout out for mental health!
This interview was the best! Jake comes off humble and wholesome. Good job.
The doctor seems very honest, open and compassionate. Good advertisement for his field.
So cool! I love seeing MD’s that are passionate about their field.
Goodman!
One of my favorite Instagram doctors ever! So glad you interviewed him. His honesty is refreshing and his attitude is endearing
I cant believe 25 medical schools did not grab him rt up! I enjoyed this very much. Thanks for introducing Jake to us. Seems he is exactly where he wants to be. You do very good with the 73 qeustions series. Thank u!
He is very honest and sweet!!
Best 51 minutes spent on UA-cam! Thanks ND for this wonderful interview.
Okay....his vibes are just "perfect" for being a psychiatrist!!
I LOVE that he gave credit to the techs! Tech’s do so much more behind the scenes than most people give them credit for. ❤
36:04 good job. It has been about ten years for me not drinking pop. Started my freshman year of high school during cross country.
Andy OMG!!!! So beyond excited about this! Once you said psychiatry I was thinking it was going to be Jake! I love Jake and following his journey as a psych resident he is very inspiring and I look up to him a lot!
same!!!
Thank you for always supporting me Amber !
happy i could bring on a familiar face :) and thank you all for waiting so long. i told you it would be worth it
This was great! I’m so happy to finally get this speciality because it’s what inspired me to try for medical school.
He seems very humble and down to earth 🥰🥰
What an awesome 73 q interview. Especially from Jake, we really do see the passion he has for the field he is in. Much luck and blessings to the two of you guys!
Dr. Goodman, thank you for being a psychiatrist! My children's lives were vastly improved (and in one case, saved) by the members of their mental health teams. No matter how empathetic a pediatrician or family med doctor might be, it's not the same as having the background, and most importantly, the knowledge of prescribing for adolescents. It's not for the faint of heart, for sure!
I love all the docs on this channel but dr. Goodman is the most genuine.
My favorite “73 question” interview. What a beautiful soul! Thank you for advocacy for mental health!
FINALLY WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR AS A FUTURE PSYCHIATRIST
It's not easy to process all the emotions I got from this interview. Thank you guys. You are changing the field of medicine.
He has such a good spirit! Loved this video, probably one of my fave interviews yet!
He's such a sincere and inspiring soul!
I born to be a psychiatrist and I know it🌻🙏🏻
That's one of your best interview bro ! ;) keep it going! we are so thankful you for your effort!
I love psychology and I am REALLY looking into psychiatry but I am a freshman in college so wish me luck in my future 🤞
I love the fact that he thinks about how much medications cost for patients..
Thank you Lord that this doctor persevered. He will make a difference in so many lives.
This was amazing! His honesty is refreshing, and he's easy on the eyes. Best of luck to him in his career.
He is a gem ! This was a great interview!
I LOVE the aesthetics of this channel! If you ever get a chance, can you PLEASE interview a forensic psychology? Keep up the great work! ❤️
every student must watch this video this is a life lesson what a wonderful wise guy
He seems to be very honest. I like that.
Definitely my favorite installment so far
Awesome interview.
At 22 I’m just starting my physc journey this spring. Either this or I’m considering dentistry… so I appreciate these videos
He is so humble and super cool.
This is the most amazing series on UA-cam ❤️❤️
That was absolutely wonderful, Jake. Thanks for posting.
Love this! I actually was in the same MPH program as his fiancee. Admire his authenticity and compassion for others!
What a lovely word of mouth thing to say.
His personality and experiences lead me to believe he ended up exactly where he belonged, and his patients are better for it. 👍
he seems so sweet and personable!
This just clarifies my calling. Thank you so much for this all of it is what I'm looking for the next years!
Super down to earth! Wish nothing but the best. He seems like he would be an amazing doctor.
I follow Jake on UA-cam and he just has the same lovely feel to him in this interview. I wish he had been a psychiatrist in my care team over the last 30 years or even into my future. I think I'd have had better outcomes with his wisdom and support.
I love this guy and his vibe, a true inspiration
The perfect job for Jake! & my dream job! Been a tough semester as a pre-med and "protect your mental health" was exactly the sign I needed.. Thank you!!!
