Maedhros deciding to hand over the high kingship of the Noldor to Fingolfin prevented a civil war among the Noldor in my opinion. However, I still think there was a great deal of mistrust between the Fëanorians and those who followed Fingolfin. The 2nd and 3rd kinslayings showed that not trusting the Fëanorians was correct. As far as Maedhros goes, giving up the crown does not make him fit to be king. He still had participated in the 1st Kinslaying and would go on to participate in the 2nd and 3rd ones as well as the attack to seize two of the Silmarils at the end of the War of Wrath. He was still no better than the least evil of Fëanor's sons.
I know I've said this before but bless you for doing this series, I can't wait for the next episode & once you've finished I will binge all of these. It's been a blessing to see & hear the Silmarillion done this way because It's made it easier & entertaining for me to totally understand the stories & history without getting frustrated & your narration is perfect & I've become a huge fan of you & your content. Keep up the wonderful work, it means so much to people like me who crave this sort of thing. Have a great weekend my friend!
I feel myself accursed to not have lived during JRR Tolkien's time. He has so many qualities that I have not seen replicated in any other author. Hell it is hard enough to get current day authors to create a map to go along with their work much less an entire language and History. Shows love of craft that is not present today.
Watching again. Interesting point about Jamie Lannister. But it makes me this of rocky ( south paw ) left handed fighters are considered more dangerous to fight or more difficult for right handed people. And it far more rare so difficult to address.
Can't help but think that Maedhros may have been mostly sincere in his loyalties to the House of Fingolfin due to his brotherly love for Fingon. I think Maedhros was sincere in his utterances of loyalty towards the house, but I would challenge and propose that the rest of the Feanorians were the treacherous ones who would slay their brother were he to have joined in an earlier attack vs Morgoth under Fingolfin. I think, Maedthros was the most genuine of the group but knew if let's say Fingolfin's house claimed the Jewels, he would hesitate to strike them down and would be slain by his brothers for this. Maybe Maedhros was one of those counselling Fingolfin to tread lightly and not to trust the house of Feanor? I know this is a peculiar way of reading the text, but I think Maedhros was genuinely broken after the Arnoediad and that the other Feanorians took advantage of that. As he seems the most genuine and good-natured of the lot of them.
I wish there was a genealogy of dragons. They've always fascinated me since I read the Hobbit so many years ago. Also were they creations of Morgoth, like the orcs, or did he just chum it up with the first ones he found?
It's an interesting comparison that Barahír saves Finrod, then later Húrin saves Turgon. In the first instance, the favour is returned with the ring and an ever-lasting friendship. In the second, Húrin and his family are tortured and punished severely, and Turgon never lifts a finger. Just different manners taught in the houses of Finarfin and Fingolfin, apparently.
6:31 - Justification for maintaining the status quo: the eventual fate of all parvenus, always expressed as complacent, shortsighted self interest. The root of all so-called conservatism.
I really enjoy the naming and renaming of lands in Middle Earth. It really creates a personification of the lands. Cheers Dan!
The hand dominance was a very interesting piece I didn’t know. Thank you for sharing!

The chapter where everything goes to blazing shit 🔥💩🔥 Now let the real tragedy unfold. Happy to continue following your channel.
I knew Sudden Flame was a big event but damn, Morgoth completely broke the siege and turned the (visible) tide.

Hi Dan. What ARE the dragons? Maia? They are sentient, can change shape, and are incredibly powerful. Any thoughts?

Hey VoG, is a chapter 19 review on the horizon?

Might as well remain as comfortable as possible when doom is also inevitable. So, there's an underlying nihilism imputed to the Noldor here as well.
Cheers dan
Great videos; but why not take everything up a level by learning the correct pronunciations?
