  • Riding through smoke filled valleys and narrowly avoiding forest fires..
    On this final episode of the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route, we are reaching the end of a long journey, but it isn't over yet.. In the Southern section we faced storms, in the Central section we made repairs, and in the final Northern section we must navigate the intense late summer forest fires.
    As the air quality continues to decline, we navigate around remote road closures and make our final ascent to the last summit along our route.
    This has been an incredible journey.
    I hope you enjoy the video.

    I know exactly how your Dad feels about this trip. Last summer(7-8-23) my brother and son joined me on this same journey and it was so nice to spend time learning more about my son and more about my brother. We averaged 9-11 hours in the saddle and my body could sure feel it(In my 60's). We got lucky and missed seeing the fires and had clean air during the trip. We all dumped the bikes a few times. I dumped mine on the long rocky hill on the Lolo Motorway. I came around a corner one time and found both my son and brother were laid over in deep ditches at the end of the Lolo trail. We usually camped at higher elevations and it was really cold. We missed the rain for the most part and local guys had cleared the trails( only a few areas with snow). Tons of trees chainsawed by these local guys who love keeping the BDR open for motorcyclists. You could give your dad no better gift than spending time with him the way you did. Great videos and it was a great adventure.

      Loved reading that story!! I always enjoy hearing others experiences along the route. Crashes are all part of the journey though right hahahahaha. If I ever do the route again, prepping for the cold is going to be a MUST. Sounds like we both might've underprepared in that area lol. I am extremely grateful to have done that route with my dad. I think it will be something that we both look back on fondly and we still rewatch the series from time to time.

    The overwhelming sense of melancholy on the ride from Lunch Peak Lookout to the border had me contemplating life for about 2 weeks after getting back to San Diego. INCREDIBLY bummed that entire last section. Just wanted to keep riding north and never stop. Still can't shake that feeling everytime I watch a IDBDR ride. She is calling me back.....

    I gotta say, this video was really good. Your editing peaked on this one. I’m about to set off on a 19,000 mile trip and I really didn’t want to fuss with taking a drone, but the compelling footage you got added so much to your ability to tell a story I think I will regret not bringing one with me. I’m really happy for you that you got to do this with your dad, I wish my dad was a rider like me for this reason. Excellent edit, great music. I’m gonna go watch them in order again. Congrats

    We enjoyed watching this. Excellent videography and editing but felt it was missing a little something. I think adding a main character would have made the story a bit better and you missed a huge opportunity with your father there. Would have loved to hear from him about the things going on and how much fun/struggle he was having. Never take the exact same route, even when we planned to something would cause a change of plans.1,200 to 1,700 miles depending on the way we go. 8:40 YES on a video series about prepping and packing for a trip like this. I'd also be curious about your thoughts/opinions on riding a mid sized ADV bike (like a Yamaha T7) vs what you and your dad rode. Obviously some of the hard sections are probably not even an option on a mid sized ADV bike. I don't even think I'd ride them on my KTM, just because I'm leaning towards being a bit less adventurous and more cautious after breaking my wrist while riding last summer.

    • @madjack_757
      @madjack_757  7 місяців тому +2

      I feel your pain! I've broken both wrists at the same time once and it is brutal to heal from. Hope its not giving you any residual soreness after healing. My wrists always seem to get sore in the cold.
      In terms of what bike to use, I think it all depends on HOW you pack. I think as far as mid sized ADV bikes go, the T7 is super aggressive and very very capable of offroad use. I think it could be an excellent choice for the ride provided it has the proper tires and the bike isn't over packed. We definitely packed a lot and that made the lighter bikes very helpful so our overall weight wasn't unmanageable.
      I have a good half dozen ish videos that I am trying to work on before beginning the next filming/riding season here soon and I'll try to fit a packing video as soon as I can! There are some random items that I found to be unexpectedly useful and I want to mention those.

      I firmly believe in the second amendment and in the great state of Idaho, firearms are very common. Out here we have bears, cougars, wolves, and like anywhere, sketchy people can cross your path in the woods. Just like carrying spare inner tubes or extra gasoline, the sidearm is a tool/resource.
      I think I would have packed less clothing. I think that I would have done better if I had forgone certain small items like glowsticks or a mosquito net that just never got used. That’s the learning process of these journeys though 🤟🏼

    • @motojon76
      @motojon76 6 місяців тому

      @@madjack_757 I'm also a firm believer, I just think it's interesting that you carried it in such a way and such an insignificant piece. In the event of a large animal attack, you just need 1-2 rounds to shoot yourself since bears eat you long before they kill you. You're not likely to scare a large, hungry cat. There's no element of surprise when dealing with 2-legged predators, and you're not detouring them with a flamboyant, inaccessible display either. But, whatever makes you happy and feels secure to you is what matters.
      The Mosko luggage is fantastic if you're crashing a 600# bike repeatedly. You and your Dad obviously had some issues with over-laden bikes. I was more asking if you'd thought about dumping the (unbelievably) heavy Mosko for something lighter. Giant Loop and Wolfman both make MUCH lighter stuff that would more than survive anything I've seen you run thus far.
      If you're familiar with ADV Rider, you may want to take a look at the "The art of packing ultralight" thread. It's extremely eye-opening and I think right up your alley. I ride a KTM 500 on trips like yours, and having had Mosko, GL, Wolfman, and now custom luggage, I can tell the experience is SO different once you give up the thought that you're crossing Africa on a road covered in razor blades. LOL No one "needs" that kind of crazy luggage, and it's shocking how much better stuff is out there that we just don't see on IG every day.

    What sections would you say were the best? I'm considering doing Pine to Wallace out and back, due to time constraints.

      @madjack_757  7 місяців тому +1

      I think my favorite parts of the journey were the magruder corridor, trinity mountain/the surrounding areas, and the very southern sections near jarbidge. The Northern parts beyond Wallace were super enjoyable too, but i think my favorites were the more southern parts. Good luck on your journey!!

      Throughout the episodes off camera I would swap it from concealed to open carry due to moments when it was either poor conditions that was getting dust in it or I was going into stores and whatnot 🤙🏼

      Oh it’s completely legal everywhere to carry here. I just try to be respectful if I’m in certain places. I usually avoid riding anywhere where the gov doesn’t support the rights of the people too.

    • @madjack_757
      @madjack_757  7 місяців тому +1

      My daily carry is a MP Shield plus and thats what I was carrying on this trip. Tho, I have been debating on a better woods sidearm. The Ruger Redhawk .357 w/ the 8 round capacity really intrigues me. I ride often in remote areas and in bear country. Plus as seen on this trek, I got my pistol extremely dirty which makes it no better than a paperweight after the first round fails to eject properly lol.
      I love the P365. I think sig really nailed their goal with creating a very capable, easily concealed carry weapon. @@Sully1three

      @@madjack_757My 500 EXC-F manual also says oil change every 15 hours but there is tons of evidence that this is only required when you are racing the bike very hard like Ricky Brabec!! My intervals are 2000 km or 1250 miles.

      @duncansloan6228 I’ve heard plenty of people saying that. I just try to do as much preventative maintenance as I can so I can prolong the lifespans of my motors! I’ve seen other aftermarket parts that increase your oil volume too and I might get some of those.
