    I've done the entire thing twice on an XR650L. Also did the Shadow of the Rockies Trail from El Paso to Baggs, Wyoming and the Mississippi Hill Country Trail. I put 37,000 miles on that bike and gave it to a friend with a mighty knock in the engine. I lost my wallet in Nevada along with $800 and some other stuff when my fanny pack fell off in the middle of nowhere. I rode 430 miles that day before I found it and made it to the motel. That was the last time I ever carried my wallet in a fanny pack. I doubt if I took two dozen photos along the way and not a single video, but man, do I have some great memories!

      About 20 years ago when I was trucking, I got a cash advance in NV, left the money on the counter, and took off. 100 miles later I realized it and stopped to call the truck stop. She said she found the money. I told her where I was and I would turn around and come back. She said no, she would bring it to me. When she got there, I hugged her, gave her $60 and kept $40. What a sweet girl.

      That is one of my top memories from the trip. Ironically, that bridge wasn’t actually on the TAT, it was as we were diverting off the route and onto pavement, so that we could get a new tire at the Cycle Gear in Granite Pass.

    I want to do this run on a coming of age ride with my son when he turns 18 before I send him off to manhood been researching it for some months . I work on wild land fires as a water tender and get to see things people can only dream of . And try to explain the sights and beautiful wilderness of our beautiful country so I figured I’ll just show him by doing this leg of the TAT . Thanks for sharing your experience what a great ride ! You're better off engine braking when running out of gas (if you can't turn the bike off), the fuel cutoff while engine braking will let you save more than at idle. Have had to do that a couple times in Nevada and Idaho to make sure I got to the next town.

    • @MotoTherapy

      Yeah, that coasting contest was just for fun-we weren’t really running out of gas. But riding back from our TAT ride, I did have to draft a truck heading east out of Bend, OR, in order to get to some gas. Amazing how much that extended my range (and how sketchy it was)!

    How do you handle a wet tent in the morning? Do you just pack it and set it up wet the next camp site?

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  2 роки тому +3

      On this trip, our solution was to ride during a record-setting heatwave and drought--it only rained/snowed on us moderately for about 30 minutes at a high elevation near Silverton, CO 😂
      But seriously, this is a good question. On other rides, we have delayed departure from campgrounds in order to let our tents dry, or we have packed them wet, then set them up at the next campground with enough time for them to dry. Worst case (when rain is inescapable) is to retreat to a hotel and try to dry them in the room. Other creative solutions like finding an overhang at an abandoned gas station, etc. might also be possibilities when the rain is relentless.
      Note: I usually pack my tent in its own dry bag. Reason: To keep it dry when riding, and if it does have to be packed wet, to prevent it from co-mingling with my dry stuff and getting it wet, too. I also pack my sleeping bag and bedding in its own dry bag, for a similar reason (to ensure it stays dry).

      One never knows when snow dumps will occur at the high elevations. A common expectation for the passes to be open is late-June through mid-September. I wish more information and details about the trail could be extracted from the video, other than just watching you have fun.

    How did you transport your bikes (on one end or the other)?

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  Рік тому

      Hans lives in NC was doing the entire TAT as a thru-ride. I hauled my bike in my truck to CO, where I met up with Hans, and left the truck at my cousin’s house there. After finishing in OR, Hans rode back to NC and I rode back to CO to get my truck.

      @@MotoTherapy That's always been one of the deterrents to a big trip, the long haul on either side! Great video though, thx for sharing.

    Enjoyed the vid. Gave it a thumbs up. Question: How did you record your voice and your partners voice coming over your comm sets?

      Thanks! We used Sena 10C Evo comm units with integrated cameras.

    Missed any coverage from Delta to Twin Falls. Not too scenic through S to N section along NV /UT border via Wendover…so I understand!

      I sliced my rear tire west of Ephraim (directly south of SLC). The closest replacement tire we could find was in Provo, so we diverted to Provo and then reconnected with the trail from there. As you said, looping around the Salt Lake is of limited interest, and we were also riding during the big heat wave with temps well into the 100s. So, after dealing with the tire (double-plugged, couldn't get the bead to reset, etc.) in the middle of nowhere for most of a day in the extreme heat and wind, and having already diverted to the north, missing that section was also a safety call.

    I’ve heard the TAT in Oregon has a lot of dead ends and reroutes, and hasn’t been updated in quite awhile, but doesn’t appear that you had any difficulty in that respect. Can you confirm the routes condition?

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  2 роки тому +1

      We rode Sam’s route, and the only reroute we experienced was due to a wildfire. I can’t speak to gpsKevin’s route, but I’ve heard people offer complaints like you mentioned about his route.

    What tires are you running in the 890 in the video? Are they tubeless like the stock tires?

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  2 роки тому +1

      Initially I was running Motoz Adventures, but half-way through this trip, after I had bead issues, I switched to TKC80s.

    At the very beginning of the video it shows a short highlight one of the bikes (I think the KTM) dumped over and the rider rolling in the river. Never saw that in the main video. Where and when was that? GREAT VIDEO

    Its crazy there is parts of the states this unpopulated.... In canada its like this everywhere cause you know we only populate 8% of the land we own, but america theres a town every 15 min it seems.

      There are some wide-oped spaces in the western U.S. But yes, Canada has less density, for sure.

    I’d love to do a trip like that! What was the worst part of the trip?

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  2 роки тому

      The worst part was hauling my bike from SC to CO and back in my truck (I had already ridden the eastern portion of the TAT in 2019). The next worst part was slicing my tire in the middle of nowhere UT, not being able to reset the bead, and not having a spare tube to insert into the tire...lesson learned!

    Are yall running tubeless tires?

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  11 місяців тому

      Yep-Factory tubeless config with plug kits. I highly recommend carrying emergency tubes, too. Would have saved our bacon with the puncture (slice) in remote Utah.
