NA 1.6 Miata Exhintake Mod - Install/How To

  • Had some questions on my previous video about the exhintake mod, so I figured I would make a video detailing how to do it. It's very simple, the hardest part is just sourcing the correct cam.
    You WILL need a 1994-1995 Mazda MX3 exhaust cam to do this mod. Once you have it, just swap cams, mark the new alignment marks on the gear, and you're good to go. If you want more information on the mod, check out the link below.

    Cams from 96 - 98 work too, they're the same. I'm running one from 98 and works great. Highly recommend this mod, very noticible improvement and it riiiips now across the whole power band. I also have the bigger rx7 AFM mod.

    I’m gonna blow your mind with what I found today, it’s not from a Mazda either but the exhaust cam will swap over just the same as this. Pretty excited to share this, I’ll be dropping my vid sept 1st. Just wanted to see if anybody figured it out yet.

      2:20 don’t watch race teams swap tires out 😂 they do NOT go in a star pattern to remove or install wheels. Just goes inside circle on and off.

    Hi! I want my mx5 1.6 (hla) turbo , change the solid lifters and I'm wondering Can I use mx3 camshafts and lifters? (solidlifters) mx5 1.6 cylinder head?
    mx3 exhaust camshaft to intake and intake to exhaust? or two mx3 exhaust camshafts and cut the other camshaft?

    if I am not wrong, 1.6 doesn't have an exhaust CAM right? If so, how can the CAM is gonna fit on the exhaust camshaft then?

    I know this video is a few years old but I got a question about the ignition timing. Since you advanced the timing to 14° for the base timing did you have to run 91? It is recommended when you advance timing to 14° on a stock engine with stock cams to run 91. However is it needed in this situation with the new cam? Thank you

      I would say yes, since you're still igniting a similar, hopefully bigger, amount of air which means more compressed air, more heat, more pressure and so on.

    How would I tune megasquirt/speeduino to work with this mod since base timing can't go lower than 14°? Is there a setting I can change in tunerstudio to let the ecu know that the cas is rotated?

      Watch my video on setting base timing. Don't think just because the stock timing at idle was 10 degrees that you need to be running 10. I'm running 15 at idle, just because that's where my car seems to like it. You can TECHNICALLY grind the top of the CAS opening and it'll let you dial back the timing, but I didn't say that.

      @@ConnorsCorner1 So if I have my cas manually rotated to 14°, I just have to go into spark settings and set fixed/locked timing to 14° and the car (cas) and the ecu will be in sync? Or do I need to offset the fixed setting by an additional 4° because the ecu expects the cas to be at its default location (10°)?

      @@st5rk Forget everything you know about timing on the stock ECU, it's irrelevant. When you rotated the CAS on stock ECU to 14 degrees, it gave you more power everywhere because you essentially advanced the ENTIRE ignition table by 4 degrees. On MS/Speedy, the ignition table is whatever you want it to be. Your car is going to idle at whatever ignition timing you have set in the ignition table. You just lock the timing at SOME number in the ECU, 10, 12, 14, heck you could do 20, doesn't matter. Rotate the CAS until the engine timing is matching what the ECU is commanding. Then turn off fixed timing, and you're good. Once they are "synced" up you have nothing to worry about.

    Will a 1.8 protege exhaust cam work? (Not sure what year) My friend gave me one and it has the cas thing

      No. 1.8's are physically longer engines. Has to be a 1.6

      I found mine on FB marketplace, $40 shipped. The MX3's are pretty hard to find though, so it'll take some digging.

    Did you remap the car ou is running on stock ecu? I know for the extra hp the remap would be better, but just curios it it'll run on stock ecu.

      Yeah it was running perfectly fine on the stock ECU. I actually got a standalone for it though, just to take full advantage of the cam and headwork, but I don't believe it was 100% necessary.

      @@ConnorsCorner1 Thank you, you in the video say it pulls nicely over 5k, the stock one on mine dies over 6500, how is the powerband on this one?

      @@maccmiata2206 It makes power to redline now, but don't expect a TON more power. Its noticeable for sure, but thats one of the reasons I got an ECU. That way I can correct the lean AFRs up top and hopefully make much more power. I'll try to arrange some pulls with my buddy with a stock 1.6 at 14 degrees to show the difference. Its very noticeable.

      @@ConnorsCorner1 nice to know! I'm curious to see the result, if you could make a dyno would be great. I have been trying to learn about this mx3 exhaust cam on these miatas. I plan to go diy itb, raise the rev limiter and get cams that make power higher in the rpms once the time is right. Nothing too crazy but I like revs and k swap its expensive

      @@maccmiata2206 Yep. I plan on taking it to the dyno at some point once I dial in my tune. I also have some ITBs planned, but may just skip it in favor of boost, unsure yet. As far as raising the limiter, the hydraulic lifters and stock valve springs can't support much higher than 7500. You would need shimmed solid lifters and heavier valve springs to reach 8000.

    I kno this has nothing to do with what ur talkin about but what kinda intake and throttle body u got on that n where did u go to get it

      Its the stock intake manifold and throttle body actually. I just had them off when I rebuilt my head and gave them a coat of paint. Intake manifold is wrinkle black and the TB is a metallic silver.

    Is that intake manifold powder coated or just spray painted? Looks good 👍 I have a 1.6 too. But no luck finding the mx 3 cam online.

      Spray painted wrinkle black. Best paint there is!

    What are the gains that can be expected from this mod?

      Slight bump in hp and torque, very slight. Car seemed to pull a tad harder up top. Best thing is you don't need an aftermarket ECU.

    I love getting hate about building my car just makes me wanna build it more just to see ya pissed off👍🤭 especially when man said nitrous would be more reliable then turboing the car GTFO here😂😂😂 not nothing bout this video just blowing off steam
