Well, it confused me a bit. Did the name of the World Tour change? Otherwise, I can't figure out why the world tour teams were only referred to as "uci teams", whereas I'd think all professional teams are uci teams.
Can you please do a follow-up where you take a couple of the top teams and individuals and show where they got all their points from over the last season??
Had no idea, so thanks for this it has helped. Great to show the actual final standings for riders, teams and nations last year and narrating that a bit? Who gained and who lost as a result of points last year etc Just a thought!
Really useful to have this explained for the men's points - I have to say, though, women's racing deserves more than 'same principle but different numbers'. It would be worth taking the time to set out the values for different women's races -esp since they often get less attention.
This helped. Now do a video on where the various teams stand in international rankings. For instance, how does a first division team differ from a third division outfit? Or, how many divisions are there? And so on.
ugh UCI !! The point of points (pardon the pun) should be to help the fan follow the sport. PERIOD. Cycling needs to grow and create more and new interest, especially with its current team business model. Tennis does this wonderfully, and everybody follows and knows every player's ranking. Rankings are always shown, talked about, and competed for. It brings excitement to events, adds weight when a player has to defend or can grab a lot of points, and helps generate interest in players working their way up the rankings. In cycling, FANS don't care about points. And any changes to the system should be to help the fans, thus helping cycling. Two different rankings ? Seems confusing. In tennis everyone knows a grandslam is 2000pnts, a masters 1000, theyre even called a masters 1000 series, 500, or 250 ... Cycling, get this right !!!
Thanks - found that very useful. I think the UCI points for TdF don't mean it's a harder race interns of the course - just harder to win because all the best GC riders try to be there on top form
Useful & good call to walk through the detail. would have been good to include say the 2018 final rankings to give context on the magnitude of points individual/teams accrue.
A good introduction. Please analyze in depth all the points earned by different teams. Also: are you sure about Sagan -- surely he would score lots of points in the TdF?
It would make more sense if the uci resets the points at the start of each season and then they have an award for the winner of each category based off the points in which they earned in that given year. They could also incorporate something like a leader's jersey so that people know who is leading that category
For the women they have something rather similar to what you are suggesting (maybe not exactly the same), so it should be possible to make it for the men as well.
Thanks for the video! I believe it would be better for the audience and the business if the leaders of the one-day ranking and stage-race ranking had a different jersey (with a certain sponsor).
I think with the 'relegation' of the two lowest UCI world tour teams this year, we may see some interesting races within races and tactical decisions made to score points rather than overall results.
Isn´t it unfair for the other two Grand Tours, that the TdF is more valueble? It decreases the gap between those tours even more. In Germany for example the TdF is televised on public Broadcasting channels, whereas the Giro and the Vuelta only can be watched on Eurosport. And in my opinion the french mountains aren´t harder as the italian ones, and the Vuelta has yearly more summit finishes as the Tour. The spanish one also has less sprint stages, which makes exciting breakaway stages happen more often and days with GC changes could come more frequently. And the mountains are not divided into two three-day-blocks, but they are very well seperated between the three weeks.
I like Toastbrot personally I think it factors in that the Tour De France is a) the biggest cycling race in the world and b) attracts the highest quality of field
My heart goes out to the riders who slay themselves on the front for the first 100k or so setting tempo for the team. Hard to come by points that way. Hopefully directors throw contracts at all-day power beasts even if they are low on points.
Why doesn't the rainbow jersey go to the rider with the most UCI points? Then fans will want to keep track of the points tally, and it won't be decided by a single race.
I could be wrong but I think there used to be a men’s road race World Cup that featured a special leaders jersey. It wasn’t the same as the rainbow jersey of WC, but it came close to satisfying the need to identify the highest ranked rider at the time.
Interesting video Ollie. Never really understood how the scores were worked out. Is there a list of the final scores for each rider or team you can access easily?
Cycling noob here! I was just wondering why riders like Egan Bernal and Juliane Alaphilippe aren’t riding in La Vuelta and weren’t in the Giro. If I’m not mistaken, there are a lot of UCI points there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Yes very helpful video ..still I wanna ask ..how much uci points do i needed to participate in Olympics (2020) road racing & single time trail race and for triathlon race ...just needed for knowledge pls. .tell.me.
This helped me understand a lot, but it also has me kind of torn. Clearly the UCI is not afraid to be controversial because there are so many things to disagree on in a system this complicated. On the one hand it's good that there are incentives for different strengths and different types of riders and races, but on the other hand I struggle to see how you spread the sport to a wider audience with the system being so complicated. I wonder if it would make more sense to have separate leagues for different types of racing. A league for crits, a league for the classics, a league for stage races et. ... . who knows?
for the points for the olympic medals, do those only count for year of the olympics? or do you get them for every year you're holding that title (aka GVA still the road race champion thus gets 600 pts per year)?
Personally the fact that i had to search this means its a bad model, as a fan thats want to know more about a sport it needs to be not complicated as this because we tend to get excited by the great cyclists at first (stages are too complicated when you are new to the pro scene) and we dont have a calendar for UCI races as a casual follower. And for a guy like, a ranking like in tennis would be really a goos way to track my favorite cyclists
So, how many points did G get last year at Le Tour? 1,000 for the win 240 for two stage wins How many for a 2nd place on a stage? 275 for 11 days in the Yellow Jersey How many for a 3rd place on a stage? (x2) Were there any points for the TTT? Team Sky came 2nd, so do all of their riders get the 2nd place UCI points offering?
I was watching the Tour Down Under and there was reference to the leaders possibly getting bonus points - can you explain what these might be for? Many thx indeed
I wanna know who has taken the most points of all time from a Stage Race. I.e. who's won the Tour and spent the most days in yellow? Who can claim most UCI Points accumulated in 1 race?
Does the UCI publish the points tally anywhere online?... Would be good to watch the relegation battle towards the end of this year. And what a shite situation for teams trying to get sponsorship... Relegation :-(
Thanks for the links... but im a bit confused. Shouldn't all of the points have reset for the start of this season? So everyone goes to 0pts on Jan 1st 2019... if anyone could explain that would be great
@@spankofudgenudger9667 The procycling page says "Summation of PCS points over a 12-month + 2 weeks overlap period. Races are counted once. After the finish of a stage, the corresponding stage of the previous edition is excluded." So it is a rolling total, moving forward as each race comes around in the new year. This type of system is used in many sports, e.g. football, golf, tennis
Sjef van Zwet they will be published by the UCI and posted on their site. We will also report in the news show on mondays, so you can find out there 👍🏼
you've got to feel bad about that 1 team that has 1 member entered in a race. not only a tough race but he will have noone to talk too. is there a support group for these riders?
this regulation makes sure that the licenses always remain at the same teams ... how does a team that don't have the license to make more points than one has?
Why should a Tour De France win result in more points than either of the other grand tours when they can be just as difficult and hard, if not more so than the Tour?
That was brilliant! Great information we had not bothered to learn before but are now glad we know. A few comments asked about how to see points so I did a look up: www.uci.org/road/rankings
This is how you know there is an English bias in cycling. First Sagan is disqualified because an end of his career Englishmen crashes out, now they turn everything into the premier league. Not only that this will encourage trade team mates to support their leader in the Olympics and world championships, if they were not doing this already.
They have, but for 2019 there are lots of changes and even before the changes i felt it was something that wasn't well communicated or widely understood.👍 Hope this helps
Just found the UCI points table for 2019. Right now in 3rd place is Simon Yates!!!!... As far as I can recall... He has not raced yet in 2019????.... And he is coming 3rd. To me this just goes to show the level of professionalism within the UCI. It does feel like a bunch of amateurs run the show ... And this is indicative of tardiness and just crap staff... IMHO.
If the points are reset at new year, you are right, but if it like the world ranking in tennis, where points are valid for one year = 365 or 366 days, most of the points from 2018 are still valid, and in that case it can make sense. Also see eddy maddix' answer to Spanko Fudgenudger above (under Matthew Sully's question).
Punching above our weight are we? Hold me beer! Actually, they should get extra points, danger points, for having to deal with the drivers and car culture we have here.
No disrespect to the TDU! I love that race! It's great that in a sport often dominated by tradition and heritage that a relatively new race is on an equal points footing as old and well established races like the dauphine and paris nice. 👍
This helped. Now do a video on where the various teams stand in international rankings. For instance, how does a first division team differ from a third division outfit? Or, how many divisions are there? And so on.
Let us know how this has helped you!
Do you also get points/day for wearing the worldchampion jearsey?
Well, it confused me a bit. Did the name of the World Tour change? Otherwise, I can't figure out why the world tour teams were only referred to as "uci teams", whereas I'd think all professional teams are uci teams.
It has helped me understand that the UCI has been around too long and have muddied the scoring waters very well.
Yes, I had no idea it was so complicated. Very interesting video thank you.
Alright gcn "point" taken. Love the way olie say it, it does make a "point". The "point" is now clear for us to understand UCI "point" system. Cheers

I hear mtb and cx guys talking about UCI points a lot but less so road for whatever reason. Thanks for this video!
Cheers Dylan
CX guys don't bother: MVDP wins anyway ;)

This is like a door for analytics to come into cycling. Here comes WAR and Corsi.
How many points are needed to be picked up by a pro continental team or world tour team?
So is a rider's number based on their points, or is it something else?
I am not into the Facebook. Is there another way to watch the races? Thanks.
If its under UCI i believe they stream it on their UA-cam page
