I just recently got the BMPCC4K and almost completely copied this rig for my first build. I used it for a mostly run-and-gun documentary shoot. My thoughts: - The core of the rig (BMPCC4K; Atomos Shinobi; SmallRig full cage, SSD mount, cold shoe extender, top handle, HDMI and USB-C cable clamps, base plate with rod rail clamps, 8 inch CF 15mm rods, articulating monitor mount, V-mount battery) are all great. An amazing starting point for any rig that you can keep even if you change your build. - The handheld rig at the core of this is also great, but has one somewhat fatal yet unavoidable flaw: It makes the main screen basically unaccessible, which you need to be able to access for controlling some exposure and video settings, as well as controlling audio levels. This may not make a major difference for studio-type shoots, but for run-and-gun, it can be a nuisance at times. If you could scoot the battery back some, that would be great, but depending on your lens setup (I was shooting with a Laowa 17mm 1.8 MFT lens that is microscopic compared to Brian's Speed Booster and Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 setup), having the battery right up against the screen is the only way to have a balanced handheld rig. - Although the quick release mount is the best possible solution for switching between the handheld and the shoulder rig, it isn't exactly built for high speed run-and-gun situations. This is mostly because of the remounting of the monitor, which can feel like hours in high pressure shoots. Once again, totally fine for studio-type shoots, but for run-and-gun purposes, a better (and pretty comparably priced) option would be to mount the Shinobi with the SmallRig 1897 EVF bracket mount so you can switch systems with a little more ease. It also doesn't exactly fit well in a backpack, if that's of any concern for you. - The V-mount plate by SmallRig with the railblocks is a great cheaper option than many of the plates offered, but it automatically locks in the battery to the very back of your rod system - less than ideal if you're like me and would like to add something like a chest pad to the back to create a run-and-gun shoulder and handheld system. - If you're like me and use MFT lenses, get the Tilta Nucleus Nano for a follow focus system and you won't regret it. The focus ring for my Laowa 17mm is almost right up against the camera body, and this is the only system that can reach it. - Some other thoughts: Maybe this is just on my camera, but audio levels are extremely low when using a 3.5mm jack microphone. I used the VideoMicro and while I did get good audio on it, I had to have the gain cranked to 100% every time I shot (was also using it for nat sound, not just scratch audio). I have since purchased a mini XLR to XLR pack, a cold shoe shotgun microphone shock mount and a Rode NTG 2, which has given me much better audio. I also think, from my experiences shooting at high noon in the summer, you need a sun hood for you Shinobi. 8sinn makes a great cage - the Shinobi is super lightweight for some reason and it makes me nervous at times - that also comes with a sun hood for around $120. Much more useful IMO. This is otherwise a great setup, and for my first time rigging, I have to really thank Brian for providing this awesome tutorial. The video that came out of the BMPCC4K on my shoot was awesome as a result.
@Edvard A The solution I've settled on, mostly because I've been exclusively shooting run and gun stuff, is just using the handheld rig as a shoulder rig as well. I got a hand strap to put on the right side of the camera, so whenever I need to be at eye level, I put my hand thru that, tuck the V-mount battery into the right side of my chest and tilt the monitor down a little bit. It works extremely well, especially when you don't have time to convert to a shoulder rig. I've also noticed it removes the "oooh, look" factor that the shoulder rig has to it - much more discreet with very similar results. I also am frequently in public spaces and on public transit with my rig and this breaks down much easier into a backpack to be completely unnoticeable. I probably wouldn't use this for a full day of shooting as a shoulder rig, but I know LanParte makes a good chest pad if you wanted the best of both worlds, but it is a little pricey (over $100 I believe). I'm fine with using the battery as my chest pad. I haven't tried the SmallRig 1897 mount for the monitor, but I think you could find a way to work. Plus, it would mount straight to this top handle if you slide it the other way around. My only concern would be all the cables sticking out from the camera - I have a USB-C, D-Tap, HDMI, mini XLR, 3.5mm (if using Rode Filmmaker kit) and headphones sticking out at any given time during a shoot - obstructing your view, but it would be worth a shot. Just need to find a way to maybe balance the right side of the camera since this would mount to left side of the handle. I also can't stress this enough - a sun hood for the Atomos Shinobi is a MUST. In broad daylight, it is near impossible to see anything on the screen. Hope this all helps.

I have two Camvate quick release mounts -- one on my original rail for my handheld operation (so it makes it easier to take it off and place it on a gimbal) and the other one for the shoulder rig, so I can easily attach and detach it from there. Makes it sit higher on the shoulder rig but I still love it. XD
If your arms wobble a bit take them off and use a precision phillips head to tighten up the arri rossette bracket screws. Careful not to strip them, the screws are pretty soft. Thanks again for sharing Brian
Right on with the tip! Looking for a piece that doesn't wobble but I keep a backup one at home in case the wobble gets too out of control and the scews strip :)

Before i even started this video, i was immediately judging it lol, looking to see if you mention balance. You touched on it, but I’m still a bit skeptical of how the balance is. The most common rig setups I’ve seen everyone post about are all front heavy, and I’ve used rigs like that and it sucks. Using a properly balanced rig is huge for hours of use, and so far I’ve only seen one UA-camr emphasize it in their rig.
yeah i think he needs to extend rods at the rear and attach one of those counterweights, or move his vmount battery setup there. Then he will achieve True Balance, :-) Another thought: isn't it cumbersome to use shoulder rigs when your subjects are different heights? NBA players vs little kids, how do you work around that?
Sliding the V Mount and rig back a bit is the best way to achieve an ideal balance with this rig, and it can certainly be done! Shooting people of different heights is definitely tricky! I find myself doing splits almost when filming shorter people to be at a proper level, kids I normally crouch or go on my knees to film them, and NBA players will either be shot from a lower angle (unless on tip toes) or they just need to hire a taller videographer. :)

Yes! I take the rods and baseplate off and use the pieces in the handheld rig to mount the V Mount on the bottom of a Ronin S and the Monitor to that piece. Will make a video covering that! :)
Just go bare cage with the SSD attached, lose the monitor too. Get a smallrig top handle with a nato mount, attach your monitor to the handle. Slides right off in seconds... The whole concept is similar to Russian dolls, or space rockets with multiple stages, lol.

Hey Brian, exactly my rig, only that I my neewer follow focus broke after 5 minutes. I also use two sony npf 970 batteries on a v mount plate attached to the top of the camera cage, this is a cheap battery solution for me that runs me 3 hours continous shooting without problems. I don't need a top handle as I the shoulder rig allows me to just put the camera on the ground or carry on the shoulder. I use much shorter rods, because I already had them, but am thinking about keeping it this way. I just push the shoulder plate against my chest and use the cameras monitor. But probably will use my external monitor like you with longer rods just to give it a try.

Great question! The shoulder rig has remained the exact same with all the original parts still working, however a tip I might have after a year is to consider putting the monitor on a Nato mount and put mounting points on the top handle and the shoulder rig side rod so that you can switch the monitor back and forth without twisting!

Awesome rig with a nice center of gravity. The footage is rather wobbly given that it's all at 48 or 60 fps, how did your handling improve with experience and do you have any tips to stabilize?
Rig looks absolutely awesome and I had no idea there actually Was something like an anamorphic mod for the sigma! That's genius!! Btw question to the follow focus: doesn't it bother you to have it right in your face, any particular reason not to mount it to the right side?
Thanks! It is an absolutely killer and affordable mod if you have a Sigma! As for the follow focus, it is personal preference, I have never noticed it getting in the way on the left side while shooting as my hand doesn't seem to block my vision, I have tried it on the right side a few times just to see but I prefer the left just cause that is the position I can hold the rig the most stable in but it might be different for another person. :)

Great work Brian. Your videos are always spot on. One question: the link you have to the Movo 18" rods leads to rods ranging from 8-14. Don't know if they no longer make the 18" but I'm sure someone does. Do you think the 14" would do the trick for this rig set up?

Woo woo! Thank you so much, it just takes practice but it is totally doable! Now that I've been using it so much this past year it is weird using AF cameras and not having to worry about focus (although nice sometimes)
Ugh, I have a headache. This really is a great build, one of the best. Its just that for my Pocket 6K I have a Tilta cage w LWS quick release base which has 15mm rod support, which I need for my Pictor zooms (they ain't ever quick releasing since the lens support is needed at all times) AND... rather than cut my losses and start over, I'm stubbornly working around it, even though it will likely be much more expensive. I'm trying to use as much of your ideas as possible, but convert it for the TIlta standard. Maybe I should buy (another) 160 dollar Tilta dovetail to slap on top of this rig? Or maybe... idk. There might be one or two other possibilities with the expensive Tilta universal shoulder pad (includes both Arri and Tilta dovetail plates), the super expensive Tilta shoulder rig (which is a special order I don't want to wait for anyway... just kinda like the long simple dovetail on it). Thought about just adding handles to the current support rods (or longer ones) and along with that Tilta shoulder pad and calling it good, but it would probably be kinda hard to make it fit on a tripod with that shoulder pad in the way... might almost work. (I mean that the handle grips and everything would just stay on the camera at all ties, even while on a tripod. It's too heavy to really do any quick handheld stuff, so its mainly going to be a dedicated shoulder rig with tripod capabilities... maybe someday an Easyrig or Galaxy Arm, or whatever those things are called.) Yeah... probably should just see if I can attach a Tilta dovetail to the top of whatever part this is on your shoulder rig. Although... I'm still tempted to waste time attempting to make it so I can just take it off the tripod and its ready, instead of having a detachable shoulder rig... just have it in shoulder mode ready to go... If you or anyone actually reads this, sorry its so long and that I didn't give a super clear picture probably. Maybe I should upload a short clip of it here on my channel or something. (Although I was hoping to get this solved like... tonight ha!)
Not entirely sure how the rig looks, but from reading your comment. I wouldn't worry about putting a shoulder rig on a tripod. It's meant to be on your shoulder, it could be nice to have a quick and easy assembly from shoulder rig - tripod but don't worry about it. Plus you don't want your shoulder rig accesories on the tripod since you don't need it at the moment when it's on the tripod.
I have used them on projects where we are shooting on higher end cinema cameras and they are fantastic! However, I am a big fan of circular variable ND's for run & gun shooting so I rock with those for the most part.
@@brian.durkee yeah me too. Own the hoya variable nd. And also have some 82mm xume adapters with fixed nd's for better quality. I ordered a fotga tilt away mattebox and will try how that one works with the xume system :)
Hi Brian, great video! If I have a Panasonic GH5 with a Sigma 18-35 lens. Do you recommend the follow focus Tilta Nucleas Nano for it please? I found the Nano in the UK, but its really hard to find the Cool-Lux LuxGear Follow Focus Gear Ring (78 to 79.9mm)
Shark thanks! It comes down to personal preference, when using the handheld rig without the shoulder portion, I don’t use a follow focus and get along fine, however, when one the shoulder rig it is definitely handy to have a follow focus! The nucleus is great but as said in the video I like a good old mechanical one as you can get them for cheaper and there are no batteries to worry about. But if you are happy with the price of the nano and don’t mind two more pieces on your rig that need power the nano might be for you! There are a few other companies that make these seamless follow focus rings that fit the sigma so maybe look into other brands! If not you can definitely get by with a traditional follow focus gear ring, the seamless one just saves some headache

So I’ve basically copied you rig and have been using it for a while(really love it), I notice your like the only person that uses the 15mm rod lens support with the sigma, i too use it. Would you say that it’s really important to have it or is just extra precautious. I only ask because the 15 mm rods and lens support are causing me some problems with the gimbal, I want it to work but I don’t want to put my sigma or speed booster at risk. I have the little meta bones part that connects the speed booster to the rig is, is that good enough or would you still recommend using the 15mm lens support, thanks
Josh Kidd Films it is a bit out of the way! I havent found a better solution as of yet other than an Apple Watch app but even that doesn’t make it too much easier, if you find any ideas to help if love to hear them!
With the camera that far back, shooting at 18mm can you see parts of your rig at all? great setup btw, I like how long the handles are, less tiring for sure.
I can basically use this for the black magic 6K no problem? I also noticed your follow focus is literally beside your head. How do you focus and operate? Or is this why you get the wireless?
Yup no problem! and It's just about perfect for me right there! Might seem a bit odd but I like that hand position and then it remains on the rig when handheld
Hi Bryan! Thanks so much for this video - it really inspired my set up! You mentioned Wireless Follow Focus Tilta Nucleus-Nano. How does this represent an added value in this setup? It seams to be much easier to access follow focus directly on the arms.
I did mention it but I personally like going with a cheaper manual one directly on the lens. I put this in the video as I know some people prefer to use a wireless system to have someone pull focus but I think the simpler the better :)
Appreciate the inexpensive shoulder rig build. Have you found a way to position the battery in a way that doesn't block the monitor in the back? Love to offset that so I can change settings on the fly. Thanks!

If your arms wobble a bit take them off and use a precision phillips head to tighten up the arri rossette bracket screws. Careful not to strip them, the screws are pretty soft.

Before i even started this video, i was immediately judging it lol, looking to see if you mention balance. You touched on it, but I’m still a bit skeptical of how the balance is. The most common rig setups I’ve seen everyone post about are all front heavy, and I’ve used rigs like that and it sucks. Using a properly balanced rig is huge for hours of use, and so far I’ve only seen one UA-camr emphasize it in their rig.
yeah i think he needs to extend rods at the rear and attach one of those counterweights, or move his vmount battery setup there. Then he will achieve True Balance, :-)
Another thought: isn't it cumbersome to use shoulder rigs when your subjects are different heights? NBA players vs little kids, how do you work around that?
Sliding the V Mount and rig back a bit is the best way to achieve an ideal balance with this rig, and it can certainly be done!
Shooting people of different heights is definitely tricky! I find myself doing splits almost when filming shorter people to be at a proper level, kids I normally crouch or go on my knees to film them, and NBA players will either be shot from a lower angle (unless on tip toes) or they just need to hire a taller videographer. :)

Yes! I take the rods and baseplate off and use the pieces in the handheld rig to mount the V Mount on the bottom of a Ronin S and the Monitor to that piece. Will make a video covering that! :)
Just go bare cage with the SSD attached, lose the monitor too. Get a smallrig top handle with a nato mount, attach your monitor to the handle. Slides right off in seconds... The whole concept is similar to Russian dolls, or space rockets with multiple stages, lol.

Hey Brian, exactly my rig, only that I my neewer follow focus broke after 5 minutes.
I also use two sony npf 970 batteries on a v mount plate attached to the top of the camera cage, this is a cheap battery solution for me that runs me 3 hours continous shooting without problems. I don't need a top handle as I the shoulder rig allows me to just put the camera on the ground or carry on the shoulder.
I use much shorter rods, because I already had them, but am thinking about keeping it this way. I just push the shoulder plate against my chest and use the cameras monitor. But probably will use my external monitor like you with longer rods just to give it a try.

Hey man. I'm upgrading my handheld rig into a shoulder one. Before I copy exactly what you showed here, how do you like it a year later? Is it still set up that way?
Great question! The shoulder rig has remained the exact same with all the original parts still working, however a tip I might have after a year is to consider putting the monitor on a Nato mount and put mounting points on the top handle and the shoulder rig side rod so that you can switch the monitor back and forth without twisting!
Brian do you or anyone else have an example picture or video of the Nato monitor mount set up you were describing in your tip above?

Rig looks absolutely awesome and I had no idea there actually Was something like an anamorphic mod for the sigma! That's genius!! Btw question to the follow focus: doesn't it bother you to have it right in your face, any particular reason not to mount it to the right side?
Thanks! It is an absolutely killer and affordable mod if you have a Sigma! As for the follow focus, it is personal preference, I have never noticed it getting in the way on the left side while shooting as my hand doesn't seem to block my vision, I have tried it on the right side a few times just to see but I prefer the left just cause that is the position I can hold the rig the most stable in but it might be different for another person. :)

Great work Brian. Your videos are always spot on. One question: the link you have to the Movo 18" rods leads to rods ranging from 8-14. Don't know if they no longer make the 18" but I'm sure someone does. Do you think the 14" would do the trick for this rig set up?

What do you use for remote start / stop button
Ugh, I have a headache. This really is a great build, one of the best. Its just that for my Pocket 6K I have a Tilta cage w LWS quick release base which has 15mm rod support, which I need for my Pictor zooms (they ain't ever quick releasing since the lens support is needed at all times) AND... rather than cut my losses and start over, I'm stubbornly working around it, even though it will likely be much more expensive.
I'm trying to use as much of your ideas as possible, but convert it for the TIlta standard.
Maybe I should buy (another) 160 dollar Tilta dovetail to slap on top of this rig? Or maybe... idk. There might be one or two other possibilities with the expensive Tilta universal shoulder pad (includes both Arri and Tilta dovetail plates), the super expensive Tilta shoulder rig (which is a special order I don't want to wait for anyway... just kinda like the long simple dovetail on it).
Thought about just adding handles to the current support rods (or longer ones) and along with that Tilta shoulder pad and calling it good, but it would probably be kinda hard to make it fit on a tripod with that shoulder pad in the way... might almost work. (I mean that the handle grips and everything would just stay on the camera at all ties, even while on a tripod. It's too heavy to really do any quick handheld stuff, so its mainly going to be a dedicated shoulder rig with tripod capabilities... maybe someday an Easyrig or Galaxy Arm, or whatever those things are called.)
Yeah... probably should just see if I can attach a Tilta dovetail to the top of whatever part this is on your shoulder rig. Although... I'm still tempted to waste time attempting to make it so I can just take it off the tripod and its ready, instead of having a detachable shoulder rig... just have it in shoulder mode ready to go...
If you or anyone actually reads this, sorry its so long and that I didn't give a super clear picture probably. Maybe I should upload a short clip of it here on my channel or something. (Although I was hoping to get this solved like... tonight ha!)
Not entirely sure how the rig looks, but from reading your comment. I wouldn't worry about putting a shoulder rig on a tripod. It's meant to be on your shoulder, it could be nice to have a quick and easy assembly from shoulder rig - tripod but don't worry about it. Plus you don't want your shoulder rig accesories on the tripod since you don't need it at the moment when it's on the tripod.
Video and rig design are great, but more importantly, where did you get your shirt? I love that look.

I have used them on projects where we are shooting on higher end cinema cameras and they are fantastic! However, I am a big fan of circular variable ND's for run & gun shooting so I rock with those for the most part.
@@brian.durkee yeah me too. Own the hoya variable nd. And also have some 82mm xume adapters with fixed nd's for better quality. I ordered a fotga tilt away mattebox and will try how that one works with the xume system :)
Hi Brian, great video! If I have a Panasonic GH5 with a Sigma 18-35 lens. Do you recommend the follow focus Tilta Nucleas Nano for it please? I found the Nano in the UK, but its really hard to find the Cool-Lux LuxGear Follow Focus Gear Ring (78 to 79.9mm)
Shark thanks! It comes down to personal preference, when using the handheld rig without the shoulder portion, I don’t use a follow focus and get along fine, however, when one the shoulder rig it is definitely handy to have a follow focus! The nucleus is great but as said in the video I like a good old mechanical one as you can get them for cheaper and there are no batteries to worry about. But if you are happy with the price of the nano and don’t mind two more pieces on your rig that need power the nano might be for you! There are a few other companies that make these seamless follow focus rings that fit the sigma so maybe look into other brands! If not you can definitely get by with a traditional follow focus gear ring, the seamless one just saves some headache

Trying to get focus rings for the sigma 18-35mm lens is tough in the UK. Does the nucleas come with focus gears?
this is not a practical setup for run and gun - how do you make adjustments to camera settings on the fly?
The BMPCC 4K has some physical buttons I can reach with my right hand so once you have those in muscle memory it has not been too big an issue!

So I’ve basically copied you rig and have been using it for a while(really love it), I notice your like the only person that uses the 15mm rod lens support with the sigma, i too use it. Would you say that it’s really important to have it or is just extra precautious. I only ask because the 15 mm rods and lens support are causing me some problems with the gimbal, I want it to work but I don’t want to put my sigma or speed booster at risk. I have the little meta bones part that connects the speed booster to the rig is, is that good enough or would you still recommend using the 15mm lens support, thanks

Josh Kidd Films it is a bit out of the way! I havent found a better solution as of yet other than an Apple Watch app but even that doesn’t make it too much easier, if you find any ideas to help if love to hear them!

Hi Bryan! Thanks so much for this video - it really inspired my set up! You mentioned Wireless Follow Focus Tilta Nucleus-Nano. How does this represent an added value in this setup? It seams to be much easier to access follow focus directly on the arms.
I did mention it but I personally like going with a cheaper manual one directly on the lens. I put this in the video as I know some people prefer to use a wireless system to have someone pull focus but I think the simpler the better :)

You could always flip it down or lay it flat but tbh it hasn't affected my shooting too much to the point where I've wanted to change it
