You can tell Mr Anderson isn't a professional interviewer and I mean that as a compliment. He actually lets the interviewee speak without interrupting them!

This woman just articulated the “why” I’ve been unable to pin down. I could not explain why this insidious war on western society had begun. She nailed it. She states quite clearly the reduction of education to ideology, but fails to mention the corruption of our judicial system with the same ideology.

It sounds like you - like me - had to "think the unthinkable" - to get (literally) to the other side. It's often a worthwhile exercise just for itself, you don't always have to accept the results, but they usually are interesting.
The only thing vile and frightening is the level of abuse she faces from very powerful forces. How she copes, I have no idea. She is one of a handful of very brave commentators.

Why don’t we have people like that in government? We are losing so much all over the world because of this ideology that sounds more and more like a new religion.

We (I am a traditional conservative) tolerated the insults and name calling, even from our own friends and family with frenzied, illogical arguments, backed up increasingly from the MSM. Another Brit here-- completely agree. The glorious irony of the election result in December 2019 was that Corbyn should have been an ally to many conservative-minded socialists in the North. He supported Brexit far longer than Boris Johnson. He wanted to re-nationalise the railways, bringing to mind an important conversation about selling our industries to foreign nations. But Corbyn completely squandered this, through his genuflecting to the same progressive dogmas that his traditional voters found repellent and threatening to British culture. Furthermore, I would add his shameful handling of anti-Semitism in his party also helped seal his doom. But this just goes to show that traditional conservatives can span both ends of the political spectrum.

Melanie Phillips always makes clear distinctions, does not exploit slogans, and does not glamourise her own side. You can tell that her progress from the Left to conservatism is motivated only by conviction. You can see this in her devastatingly clear critique of Margaret Thatcher, revered by conservatives on both sides of the pond. When conservatives get it wrong, she says so. As a result, you can be sure when listening to Phillips, that she has thought through her views independent of trends. Phillips also has a wonderful way of explaining things that many others only feel, but can never put into words. While lucid and well-read (unsurprisingly, she attended Oxford University), she never looks down on those with less eloquence and education. In fact, she takes what they feel and gives it clear expression, causing you to say, "Aha! *That's* what was going on! That's what I have felt all along!" Her CSPAN interview is excellent in this regard. I have "All Must Have Prizes" on my bookshelf, which has opened my eyes to the calamity in education, which I *knew* was going on, but I could not understand why. Sadly, nothing has changed since she wrote that damning book. Many thanks to John Anderson for making such a quality interview available to us.
Her explanation on 27:55 was exactly what happened when she appeared on BBC question time last week when Nish Kumar couldn't prove what he was pontificating.
Melanie Phillips was very critical of Trump in the early days, but demonstrated a level of humility and realism about him in this interview which means she has the capacity to learn rather than just stick to rigid views. I respect her for that.
Even within my own extended family, there are some who make it abundantly clear that they regard me - a 'leave' the EU voter - as MORALLY inferior to them, because I did not vote as they did. This is accomplished with a sneering disdain, a "so, what you're saying is......." type of response, and the occasional 'sigh'. There is an 'hauteur' to them, which I will never be able to forgive, or forget; even when BREXIT is honoured (as it will be; even if it takes a General Election to "drain the swamp"!). When you speak of the Church of England as having utterly failed to counter our militant secularism, you neglect to mention the calibre of our bishops these days. Gone are the great theologians and scientists who used to form the Bench of Bishops. In their place are academic lightweights; who cannot even perceive the difference between two historical figures (Jesus of Nazareth and Mohammed) as revelatory exemplars of the divine. They are as different as chalk and cheese; and yet modern bishops - especially the female ones - view them as of equal revelatory status! These are VERY stupid people: and they have the temerity to claim that they have been 'called' by the Father.

I can’t then study the life of Muhammad, and the fact his prophetic career is split into two, the time initially in Mecca where he converted next to nobody for many years then the time in Medina where he began raiding trade caravans and building up an army, before returning to conquer Mecca. And that the above verse is in the later Medina period, and therefore abrogates (cancels out) the earlier ones which are deemed peaceful... Now what happens when numbers reach 20-30%, then I’m affraid as demonstrated throughout history, conflict ensues, Lebanon being a recent example during the 1970s

There are the POC: People of Color, and there are "white" people - this makes certain that "we" are the minority. It is a frightening political movement sweeping the USA, I don't know how this movement goes in the rest of the "free" world because I don't know where freedom has been so good for so many for so long, as it has here. 19:59 Education itself, which is the transmission of a culture down through the generations, could no longer transmit British and Western culture, because that was "racist".- not only racist, but it institutionalized inequality. Why? Because it meant that some children would do better than others. (This woman wrote a book called, "All must have prizes") 22:15 It's not just error; it's heresy. 23:01 The concept which is the heart of knowledge, which is truth. ...the very idea that there is objective truth is a sign of imbecility...then if there's no such thing as objective truth then there's no such thing as a lie....this is all about substituting knowledge with ideologies... nothing can challenge the idea. 24:30 What are these ideas 1) multiculturalism - you can't put your culture over theirs; 2) lifestyle choice - you can't say your way is better than theirs, etc. 26:28 The best and the brightest are silenced... I am not convinced that there is reason for hope yet. Sounded good on the surface but the media onslaught on Nigel/Brexit Party shows there is a concerted effort to castigate a clean break Brexit and put through 95% of Mrs May's deal unchanged. We shall see - I was a conservative for over 40 years - no longer.

Very good point. I have some severe critiques of the Right, which would make me persona non grata in some circles. For example, I do not approve of President Trump for many reasons, so I agree with Phillips' reservation about his character. But too many American Trump supporters (and their British conservative followers) assume that you therefore must love Hillary and the "left" if you do not agree with Trump. So there is groupthink and mob mentality on the Right, too. Furthermore, I loathe libertarian free market theory, which I believe is inimical to family, community, and society as a whole. Yet this is celebrated on the Right as being the source of prosperity. I prefer to think of myself as an independent, patriotic conservative.
Amazing thinker and speaker. Thank God for Phillips, Paglia, Sommers, the guys (Haidt, Pinker, Harris, Murray, Peterson, Weinstein). I'm gay, so disagree with her regarding parenting (multiple studies demonstrate there is no difference on impact on children with straight or gay parents; though agree 2 is double the help as a team, but that is not always possible in life), but feel she would respect me as an individual and my life and perspective; really Phillips is a real treasure for England.
I havent heard a more accurate critical analysis of neo modern cultural canibalism and in reality new age leftism is eating away on the hand that fed it , when the feast is over there will be nothing left. Thankyou for the historical and motivational perspective behind it, very enlightening.

He is amazing because he allows his guests to talk. re: this interview, the chickens came home to roost in the December 2019 election when the left was truly and quite rightly spanked within an inch of its life. Hopefully, Corbyn has destroyed Labour for good. We (I am a traditional conservative) tolerated the insults and name calling, even from our own friends and family with frenzied, illogical arguments, backed up increasingly from the MSM. The internet allows us to access proper debate and discourse and they (the left) find themselves wanting in almost every case when investigated or put under scrutiny. The silent majority rose up. Frankly we got fed up with the insults and accusations of being nazis and bigots. We are not nazis and bigots. Thank you
Another Brit here-- completely agree. The glorious irony of the election result in December 2019 was that Corbyn should have been an ally to many conservative-minded socialists in the North. He supported Brexit far longer than Boris Johnson. He wanted to re-nationalise the railways, bringing to mind an important conversation about selling our industries to foreign nations. But Corbyn completely squandered this, through his genuflecting to the same progressive dogmas that his traditional voters found repellent and threatening to British culture. Furthermore, I would add his shameful handling of anti-Semitism in his party also helped seal his doom. But this just goes to show that traditional conservatives can span both ends of the political spectrum.
I'd say that the most important thing to do right now is to tell that the People is right. They sense this but they need to be sure

Melanie Phillips always makes clear distinctions, does not exploit slogans, and does not glamourise her own side. You can tell that her progress from the Left to conservatism is motivated only by conviction. You can see this in her devastatingly clear critique of Margaret Thatcher, revered by conservatives on both sides of the pond. When conservatives get it wrong, she says so. As a result, you can be sure when listening to Phillips, that she has thought through her views independent of trends. Phillips also has a wonderful way of explaining things that many others only feel, but can never put into words.
While lucid and well-read (unsurprisingly, she attended Oxford University), she never looks down on those with less eloquence and education. In fact, she takes what they feel and gives it clear expression, causing you to say, "Aha! *That's* what was going on! That's what I have felt all along!" Her CSPAN interview is excellent in this regard. I have "All Must Have Prizes" on my bookshelf, which has opened my eyes to the calamity in education, which I *knew* was going on, but I could not understand why. Sadly, nothing has changed since she wrote that damning book.

Melanie Phillips was very critical of Trump in the early days, but demonstrated a level of humility and realism about him in this interview which means she has the capacity to learn rather than just stick to rigid views. I respect her for that.

Even within my own extended family, there are some who make it abundantly clear that they regard me - a 'leave' the EU voter - as MORALLY inferior to them, because I did not vote as they did. This is accomplished with a sneering disdain, a "so, what you're saying is......." type of response, and the occasional 'sigh'. There is an 'hauteur' to them, which I will never be able to forgive, or forget; even when BREXIT is honoured (as it will be; even if it takes a General Election to "drain the swamp"!). When you speak of the Church of England as having utterly failed to counter our militant secularism, you neglect to mention the calibre of our bishops these days. Gone are the great theologians and scientists who used to form the Bench of Bishops. In their place are academic lightweights; who cannot even perceive the difference between two historical figures (Jesus of Nazareth and Mohammed) as revelatory exemplars of the divine. They are as different as chalk and cheese; and yet modern bishops - especially the female ones - view them as of equal revelatory status! These are VERY stupid people: and they have the temerity to claim that they have been 'called' by the Father.

I can’t then study the life of Muhammad, and the fact his prophetic career is split into two, the time initially in Mecca where he converted next to nobody for many years then the time in Medina where he began raiding trade caravans and building up an army, before returning to conquer Mecca.
And that the above verse is in the later Medina period, and therefore abrogates (cancels out) the earlier ones which are deemed peaceful...
Now what happens when numbers reach 20-30%, then I’m affraid as demonstrated throughout history, conflict ensues, Lebanon being a recent example during the 1970s

I am not convinced that there is reason for hope yet. Sounded good on the surface but the media onslaught on Nigel/Brexit Party shows there is a concerted effort to castigate a clean break Brexit and put through 95% of Mrs May's deal unchanged. We shall see - I was a conservative for over 40 years - no longer.

Problem for Melanie Phillips and others of us who have left the Left, the Right assumes we belong with them and makes other assumptions based on that. Not so, we are politically homeless.
Very good point. I have some severe critiques of the Right, which would make me persona non grata in some circles. For example, I do not approve of President Trump for many reasons, so I agree with Phillips' reservation about his character. But too many American Trump supporters (and their British conservative followers) assume that you therefore must love Hillary and the "left" if you do not agree with Trump. So there is groupthink and mob mentality on the Right, too. Furthermore, I loathe libertarian free market theory, which I believe is inimical to family, community, and society as a whole. Yet this is celebrated on the Right as being the source of prosperity. I prefer to think of myself as an independent, patriotic conservative.
Wow! John, Melanie, come to the United States. Tell us your story. Maybe we will listen to unacceptable prophets for our future.
I think Melanie Phillips has done interviews in America. She did an extensive interview with C-SPAN.
Amazing thinker and speaker. Thank God for Phillips, Paglia, Sommers, the guys (Haidt, Pinker, Harris, Murray, Peterson, Weinstein). I'm gay, so disagree with her regarding parenting (multiple studies demonstrate there is no difference on impact on children with straight or gay parents; though agree 2 is double the help as a team, but that is not always possible in life), but feel she would respect me as an individual and my life and perspective; really Phillips is a real treasure for England.
I havent heard a more accurate critical analysis of neo modern cultural canibalism and in reality new age leftism is eating away on the hand that fed it , when the feast is over there will be nothing left. Thankyou for the historical and motivational perspective behind it, very enlightening.
