  • Today we are building a two car gravel parking pad and taking care of a few other things to get ready for winter and decrease the mud around the homestead that we always end up tracking right into the dome!

    ▬ ABOUT US ▬
We are Rich & Kathie, a retired couple building our dream home: A SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT OFF GRID earth sheltered home in the Adirondacks!
The house will be covered with about 30" of soil which helps to maintain an internal temperature between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter & summer respectively. This means that in the winter we will only need minimal heat that we plan to provide with a small wood burning stove and we shouldn't need any air conditioning in the summer at all!
With inflation right now, the energy efficiency of this house is a HUGE Plus! But, it also means that we have a super tight budget that is getting tighter by the day. For this reason we DIY everything we reasonably can and find creative ways to save money such as repurposing.
Please subscribe and join us to see how we manage the challenges of staying in budget and exactly how energy efficient this house actually is when it is done!
We appreciate all your support :-)

Dressing the yard up will lift your spirits especially in the Winter months. My Grand Parents had rocky ground like that, they called it Boney ground. It will not surprise me that you will be picking up rocks out of that ground until they put you in it. But good progress in any event. Enjoying you uploads from a Kiwi living in retirement in Taiwan.

    Nice work, guys.
As I follow these there's parts where I say, 'glad I'm not doing that', but more where I'm plain envious!

Mud free? Wouldn't gravel free be better? That stuff's expensive. 😁 What will you do with your mudroom now? Repurpose it? 😂 Is that the new automated, self-driving Tesla Tamper, Rich? Seems legit. Yooz have awesome neighbors and chose well. It's so romantic to be snowed in on a cold night with the fire going and a pot of stew atop the trivot. Peace.

was there any talk of using driveway fabric for gravel, , I did not know of it until i searched for help after having low spot/potholes where I parked my truck.

Yes, but we chose to not do it because we used hardpan as the base and we are hoping to build a carport over the area down the road.

Two things that make me grumpy and my wife will not hang out with me is Wind and Mud. so today its suppose to blow here 58 MPH and I have already gotten on a ladder to fix a loose peace of tin by the light on my impact driver.

I always thought those little compactors was garbage, but I was wrong because I see one in action and I was amazed on how well it worked, I would also consider some day down the road is to rent one of the big roller type just make sure that the roller is a drive wheel also, I recently see one of them in action and they really compact ravel, but what you did is definitely good, and if you're all set that's all that matters buddy. You and your wife are doing one heck of a job.

I bet it feels great to get up out of the mud and have the dome covered. That 3/4 stone wont really compact and stay if you dont allow the fines under it to work there way up into it. The fines are what lock gravel in place. Item4 would make for a more solid gravel pad.

Yes, unfortunately it would have cost us another $700…doing what we can for now. 👍😊

Okay what is that grayish looking powder and what does it do? We are trying to control dust not mud but are very curious what that stuff is and what it is for.

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  10 місяців тому

It’s called pond scraping, but it’s basically the stone dust from the quarry. We were told it’s used to mix up an item 4 so it was cheaper to do it this way. Time will tell. Where there wasn’t any gravel it did get very mushy after it rained though. But the gravel area has been great so far.

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid

Because the dirt under it is called hardpan and will pack down really well and we are hoping to put in a carport down the road so it will be dug up again....

Replace the shelter logic tarp with metal roof panels . From the big box store. Seen it done on another channel .

Yes, we are planning to do something like that but the metal roofing is so expensive we just don't have the extra money in our budget. I have been keep my eye on facebook marketplace. Also looking into corrugated plastic....
