The US M3 Lee medium tank is often held as a pretty terrible vehicle, both in War Thunder and in real life. Both assumptions are wrong.

The REAL War Winning Tank
Obviously the M3 didn't really win WWII
Please play the Sturmtiger but covered in bushes, PLEAWSE
still it was a placeholder before the sherman came and it did great in the pacific so u could kinda say it won the pacific war
😭Better not
It's called we do a little trolling
It didn't win the war, but it did win my heart!
The M3 Lee is the opitome of: "Switching to your secondary is faster than reloading".
facts
With the fact the secondary feels like a primary. It's honestly just that
*or your Tertiary😂😂
Switching to your primary is faster than reloading (the hull-gun is counted as secondary)
@@VynalDerp shhh. Don't ruin the meme
Seeing this thing in action reminds me of a quote:
"The 75 is firing, the 37 is firing but traversed the wrong way. The browning is jammed. I am saying 'driver, advance' on the A set and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret to see 12 enemy tanks 50 yards away... someone hands me a cheese sandwich."
Wasn't that from a commander of a Grant 1. Br'ish
@@gio-f7l Yes, I believe it was said by Ken... something. I don't remember the last name for the life of me.
Sounds like a command control problem; not a tank problem.
@@mikhailiagacesa3406it's a good example of the chaos that is mechanized warfare
@@mikhailiagacesa3406 A tank like the lee does induce command control problems by it's design. It's rather complicated to keep a tank doing it's job with just one turret. a 2-turret 7-man crew is really complicating something that needs to be as simple as possible.
Attempt number 8 at getting Spookston to play any tank with a dozer blade, the catch is, he can’t engage targets until he digs himself in. Movement around the map is allowed, but he has to dig in again before reengaging.
i checked the geneva convention, and what you suggested indeed falls under the category of "crimes against humanity"
Allowed to fight back if he is engaged at close range?
@@rawchicken3463 but still, did they really need to torture him by making him dig a foxhole every single time? i mean it's really hilarious, but don't you feel a little bad for him?
@@houjisaifeddine5524 They never said how deep he has to dig the hole. He can just push a little dirt and engage
I mean to be fair, he could go to the middle of an open field, dig himself in, and basically be in hull down position despite being in a flot field. This will work especially well in top tier, any body that drives by gets fucked.
Spookston: "its important to have separate key binds for both guns"
Also spookston: binds the same fire key for both guns
I do that too, because I only have so many fingers, and the 37mm reload is quick enough. You can still use the limit of aiming angle to only fire the turret then shift your tank body if both guns are reloaded at the exact same time which is rare due to the different reload speeds.
He used the switch to secondary and primary guns though a few times.
@@AndyViantyou only need 1 finger to fire the other gun

The M3 Lee gives me brain damage whenever I look at it. Truly one of the armoured fighting vehicles of all time
YES a project wingman pfp
WW1 mentality. Many guns and rivets lol
The M3 looks (relatively) normal. The M3A1, however, is weird as hell.
@@epikmanthe3rdis that the smooth rivitless m3 or the m3 grant?

And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away . . . . someone hands me a cheese sandwich." ~British Tank Commander 1942
Back then I was like everyone, hated the M3 Lee for it's ugliness, but some enlightened soul told me that the M3 Lee is basically a StuG with a secondary and it changed my entire playstyle for this. Still remains a nice tank to run
Is . . . That not the common understanding of this thing?
I mean, meme all you want about how ugly it is, but in terms of functionality it seems fairly straightforward to classify it as basically an (admittedly very tall) casemate TD with a secondary gun in the turret.
@davispeterson1876 *technically*, the 37mm high velocity gun is supposed to handle anti-armor, while the 75mm was supposed to be treated as an infantry support weapon. *However*, the 75 was really good at dealing with early war armor. In my opinion, most tanks would really prefer to not have 1.5 pounds of HE detonating directly against their hull plating
@@jacobbrown7367that was the intention when it was designed, yeah, but by the time the M-3 made it into combat the 37mm had been almost entirely obsolete as a mainline antitank weapon for about a year (pretty sure the invasion of France was when the Germans started jokingly referring to their 37 mils as "tactical doorknockers")
I started playing it because it was ugly, then noticed a trend and started using it more often
(The trend was triple or quadruple my usual mission performance and actually having fun)
@@jacobbrown7367 i feel like if i was to have designed the tank id have the exact opposite conclusion. The smaller gun would be faster to load and therefore could just dish out canister or HE, squad by squad, or against MG emplacements and trenches, while the 75 would be the backup "oh shit" anti tank weapon.
The M3 Lee will always have a place in my heart thanks to the suffering it caused me in World of Tanks, but in Warthunder its much better. Having the 75 and the 37 bound to different buttons lets you combo vehicles and deal with multiple target much better than if you just had one to the other
You haven’t played wot in a while then, atleast console

The M3 Lee in WoT made me cry.
The M3 lee was really underrated but was a pretty good design for being rushed to help in Africa and was a great stopping gap before the Sherman was in production.
The Sherman was in development during the time of the M3 Lee. It was made as before the Sherman there was nothing to mount the 75mm on.
Both m3 and m4 comes from more or less the same project.
M3 is a stopgap as m4 is not ready.
It does not directly lead to m4.
M3 Lee bodies the crappy tanks Britain was using.
@@pax6833 Eh 50/50, as the British "Crusier" Tanks were subpar at the time besides the Crusader variants.
Still not a patch on the Queen of the Desert though, Matilda.
Also for the British it's the M3 Grant. Different turret & gun
@@Inucroft All of the British tanks were horribly unreliable, so any British offensive would lose upwards of 25% of its tanks to breakdowns, until they got US tanks. The matilda had no high explosive shells, so it sort of sucked as an infantry support tank.
Used to play this with a friend on Lee-Grant-Stuart lineups for multiple hours a day for nearly a week straight some number of years ago. We were destroying teams left and right consistently. I suspect we had a serious hand in why the Lee and Grant were raised in BR from 2.3 to 2.7. We didn't play it for much longer after the change. But I still come back to it every once in a while.
Edit: We would play Arcade battles.
M3 lee, for a tank that was made to be a stopgap, did really well for what it was made for and it’s always nice to see it be appreciated
Nothing like opening a beer on Friday night and seeing Spookston upload where he is having fun. It's like I came to my buddy's house. So relaxing and warming. Thank you Spookston. From my heart.
When it released I'm pretty sure it was something silly like 1.7 or 2.0. It was almost literally invincible in a downtier. I remember being surrounded by 2 Pz.IIs, 2 Pz.IIIs with the stubby 37, and a Pz.IV with the stubby 75. No one knew where to shoot, what to shoot, and I could basically do two handed pistol shooting in front of me and all around me with the 37. It was so absurd
I used to hate the m3 Lee because in WoT you could only use the 75 mm cannon and ugh what a horror but after playing war thunder all those problems disappeared, well most of them.
You could actually play it to great effect in WoT because its DPM and alpha was insane at its tier. Not easy to play, but it had very high potential.
I think he means that it is a little stupid that the turret on top of the tank can't be used when it is literally there. May be a good pick, but that doesn't mean it isn't dumb
@@ohthatswild1755 I think it's a limitation of the game itself, as lots of tanks are like that. Secondary guns would be cool to have.
@@highadmiralbittenfield9689They are in WoT now, including the M3s 37mm
@@highadmiralbittenfield9689 Yeah, that's kinda the point I was making. I find it crazy that a game that prides itself exclusively on its tanks hasn't fixed that glaring issue. One of the many reasons I stopped playing it.
My favorite “stratagem” with the Lee was to park myself on the corner of a building so that only the 75 was poking around it. Many players at that tier wouldn’t see me because I only had about 1/3 of the silhouette
Recent technological advances in computing and physics have convinced me of a few things. One, that time travel is possible. Two, that a computer capable of running an AI art generation client was sent back in time and engineers in the US in 1938 asked it "Show a picture of the perfect tank", and thus it generated the M3 Lee.
I’ve gotta say, I love that spook’s personality comes through in his videos. It genuinely feels like you’re doing it cause you enjoy it. Your content is awesome man
The us 75s are probably one of my favorite guns in the game. Also m2a2 maybe?

It was a cool tank, mostly forgotten due to being a stopgap for a medium tank with a decent gun in a turret but it was appreciated over here (even if we wanted it built to a slightly different spec...)
I absolutely love the British variant, The Grant. The up-armored turret, better shape. and lack of a commander cupola really sells it for me.
Thats my name lol
It's also infinitely better based on name alone-- I always cringe seeing Lee's name on military equipment, even as a nickname. Lee himself didn't want things named for him, even putting aside the obvious issues of a piece of military gear being named for a historical traitor.
@@theroadstopshere
Also badass since you can say stuff like “I grant you death” for every kill
@theroadstopshere They put his name on the tank as he wasn't a bad general. Person wise on the other hand, that's a different story.
@@theroadstopshere
Yeah, who doesn't prefer a war criminal instead
(Yeah no Sherman's actions were nothing short of the nazis. A brutal campaign against civilians in order to teach them a lesson and his wife, dear god...)
To my memory bad reputation comes from eastern front due to 2 factors:
1)tank was sent to formations with other medium tanks and it's unique configuration wasn't taken into account. As such hastily trained crews had no idea how to operate it effectively;
2)the arrival of M3 to USSR was happening AFTER someone decided that it was a great idea to weld the side doors shut for extra protection from german 37mm guns. As a result tanks had 2 less escape hatches then in earlier american and british service. Which lead to even fewer skilled crews that operated it
Certainly sounds like something the USSR would do
@@mariofan1ish oh, if it was that easy. The doors were welded shut before the tanks were shipped. Because it was done as a result of british and american experience in North Africa. But by that point german 37mm Pak wasn't on top of high priorities for soviet tankers. So tanks arrived solely in condition that ENSURED more losses as tank lost 2 escape hatches. And then they even removed those in production.
M3 could have performed much better on easter front and that could have saved a lot of lives. That's what bad communication between allies does:(
The M3 is so good, I love it SO much. It's armor holds up surprisingly well.
I love watching Spookston actually enjoy himself instead of suffering just to give us content
Its about time this machine got the recognition it deserves
10:50 The driver seems to move with the hull gun’s azimuth joint. I think they might have parented the driver to the 75mm horizontal traverse instead of the main hull.
Such a ww1 design for a tank :D "if we have guns in every direction, we can't be flanked!"
And it worked for the most part. There is a German general that hated the lee because it was hard to flank
Fun fact: the M3 lee has three turrets
no it has 2 turrets and a casement
75mm is not a turret, hull mounted
When it can move on its own it’s a turret

In my 9 years as a Free to Play casual WoT player, this was my favorite tank to play

Right up there with the British 3in. Gun Carrier. That's a fun tank destroyer.

Spookston manifests the Byakugan
It would be great if they would add the later models of Lee like they had planned in the original planned US ground tree.
I haven’t seen you so happy like this for like months now man :)
To be honest its one of my favorite tanks, always got 3-4 kills with it when i was having a bad match with 0-1 kills
I have around 15 hours in the game and this man probably double all of my collective kills in a single video spread across 4 matches
By default in war thunder both primary and secondary cannon are set to left mouse button which is realy dumb.
I highly recommend to rebind it. Most people put primary cannon on left mouse and secondary on middle mouse (pressing down on the mousewheel) but I have secondary cannon on mouse button 4 of my gaming mouse. It works super well.
If you do so the M3 Lee becomes genuinely unstoppable. Being able to comfortably shoot both gun and switch between them quickly is just incredible.

That bit about the canister shot and the Aussies? Friend of mine's grandfather crewed one as a driver and there was one thing he said to my friend that haunted him for a long time about the sheer effectiveness of the canister shot, something about two small platoons worth for each shell just being there one moment and then gone the next.

"I love this 75mm so much" you won’t like it so much when you’re still using the same gun at BR 4.7

Not only was this an underrated tank, it was the basis for the western workhorse. The Lee was where this platform got its first taste of combat
Dude I literally have some screenshots of my Lee having at least 9 kills and 4 assists and the front is literally full of shells that went through or reflected, the sides had a lot too but that thing was a monster that day.
Bro I just absolutely love the shaking cat with that music at the start of the video. Its my favourite meme
Back when I played, I had my keybinds set up to switch between controlling the two guns independently, I would frequently engage two targets at the same time.
There was also this time where I was in an M10 and got immobilized next to an enemy SU-122 that had just fired and we got into a context between my slow turret traverse and his slow reload speed
this is the most happiest ive seen spooks while playing warthunder, good for him!
5:46 Another thing that was liked about the Lee is how you could elevate the guns to very high elevations, which was useful in fighting mountainous and other typically unfavorable terrain.
Only five minutes in and my thoughts can be summed up in the expression; “seal clubbing”
To elaborate: Spookston sitting just in front of the spawn, just ending all of the poor, unfortunate low tier papier-mâché tanks driving by was much like watching that of a old-timey fox hunter stand outside the fox den, punting each and every one of the pups who come tottering out.

Wow, a portion of this video was directed to me. @2:15 I am surprised and honored. I am sorry that you took my previous comment as a derogatory remark. I intended no such thing. But sometimes I do tend to have a very dry sense of humor. The M3Lee can be a greatly enjoyable tank. If you want an M3Lee+ version then look to the premium M3 Grant. It is a Lee with tons of smoke launchers and I think has some other small differences. But not sure.

This thing along with M5 carried me through rank II
1:30 what the crew doin
After you mentioned it, the driver is always moving depending in which direction you looked, or I'd rather say your cannons were moving. If you aimed to the left the driver was far back and aiming to the right let him move forward. Maybe linked to the right cannon.
I like how the pixels die for no reason at 8:42
The M3 Lee was the first tank to achieve an ace in for me personally, really loved it. Maybe it's time to bring it back on🎉
It's amazing how much damage World of Tanks has done to the M3 Lee's reputation, despite it being so valuable in the North Africa campaign
This video was immensely pleasurable to watch
That entire platoon of solders, mind you, is very difficult to knock out in even a few hits.
It's madness, squeezing out a shot every 2 second or so, and still have a machine gun in a turret to fend off the odd plane.
So how about day 6 of asking for the ARL-44? Paper thin armor, mediocre mobility, and only OK firepower makes for one totally wonderful War Thunder experience.
8:08 I've done something similar and I'm pretty sure having the topgun pointed backwards discourages people because they think you are aware.
