I dont think so. Yesterday when i fought with very good pilot in 190 - he tried to avoid my attack to pull up, he lost speed but i missed , than when i tried to escape łów over ground , he almost hit me cause he meded turn by rudder, but when he realized that his speed was too low to łów over ground - IT was too łatę for him to gain speed and he hit ground.

The thing about the nose cannons is that they do not have to be “converged”.
Wing mounted cannon, being mounted much further apart were aimed a bit crosseyed so they would converge at some arbitrary distance forwards. It meant that there was a very sweet spot distance at which the bullets would all hammer the same thing. When firing further than the convergence distance groups would spread out and target effect would considerably worsen.
Initial convergence settings were too far. Military analysts were too optimistic as to the marksmanship of pilots so they anticipated longer range fires. Veteran pilots would get their techs to decrease convergence distance because they understood that they were more likely to be firing at closer distances where time on target would be shorter so they really wanted to pour on the lead on a smaller spot.
The P-38’s nose mounted cannons were clustered close to each other so they did not have to be converged. They could dump a pile of concentrated lead at any distance which made them really effective.

    • @immikeurnot
      @immikeurnot 14 днів тому +2

With American fighters, the convergence distance was set to 400 yards. But they didn't all hit the same exact place.
Every firearm puts bullets into a certain-sized circle at a given distance. What they would do is overlap but stagger those cones at 400 yards to give the best mix possible of maximizing both damage potential and hit probability.

The survivability of the P-38 was legendary. Zeroes would empty all their ammunition trying to take one down, only for it to limp away with a single engine, or both engines completely functional.
"Winning by default" is the best way to win in a Lightning. Such a beautiful aircraft. Not the most maneuverable fighter but it was incredibly stable and had a tremendous payload for a fighter-bomber.

Love the WW2 content. Keep up the good work. As an informational note regarding the P38's armament. Yes, the guns were exceptionally accurate due to them firing directly down the center line of the aircraft (no convergence distance sighting necessary). In regard to the 4 x .50 calibers' hitting power...they were effective guns but in all models of the P38 they were "assisted" by the addition of a single Hispano 20mm cannon 🙂. I believe this is modeled accurately in IL2.

I like the way your engines seem to smoke less as they get closer to daddy crew chief.

Two fun facts I just recently learned. If you've never watched Fat Electrician's channel, he just did a video on the AVG and Chenault. The Chinese were the first in WW2 to sink a ship by dive bombing. Chenault came up with the idea to treat bomber formations like ships and dive bomb them from above and to not dogfight. Another UA-camr just put out the greatest number of planes lost to the Americans. P-38 came in first at highest loss rate. Instead of going vertical, I would have dove down.

That 109 was going for the rarest of achievements, the 'crater kill'.

I read an interview with a German fighter pilot, once, who had come up behind a P-38 and had started to close.
The P-38 pilot must've seen him, because the Lightning started to accelerate away.
The German said he wanted to give chase, reached down to push his throttle forward, and realized it was already against the firewall.
He said that's when he knew he was in trouble. 😁

Airman in his plane sees the plane getting seriously damaged, bails out, deploys his chute, floats downward and marvels at the beauty of the land. As he drifts downward the sound of an engine fills his ears as well as the tat tat tat of a machine gun. He looks around and sees a plane coming at him, guns ablaze! A brief stab of pain and darkness...

Good hit on the bridge, but one tip for you that I used in IL2 when attacking bridges is to align along the axis of the bridge when bombing. I thought it increased the possibility of a hit as its easier to judge alignment than release point. Maybe just me though!

The P-38 is my favourite aircraft. I do have a thing for the Mustang that can't be denied but DCS ruined that. The P-38 Lightening is beast. It's got awesome guns for shredding enemy aircraft and for strafing but it's also an awesome fighter and bomber.
