@@momof4vlogs So, picture this: I got a nasty infection on my right foot from an insect bite. Off to the pharmacy I went, where they armed me with an antibiotic and some ointments. Fast forward a bit, and suddenly I’m channeling my inner pufferfish-lips and throat swelling up like they were auditioning for a horror movie. Breathing? Yeah, that became an extreme sport.
So, off I dash to urgent care. The doctor practically teleported into the room-seriously, I waited like 20 seconds. He asked if I had diabetes, did a quick blood test to make sure my foot wasn't about to stage a rebellion, and quickly diagnosed the problem: an allergic reaction to the antibiotic.
Next thing I know, I'm whisked into another room for some IV fluids and anti-allergy meds. After 45 minutes of feeling like a human pincushion, my lips and throat finally deflated back to their normal size.
Now, here's the kicker: my wife tells me I need to pay before I can leave. I'm bracing myself for a bill that would make my wallet cry, but she says it's only $30. Thirty bucks! I’m gobsmacked. I happily hand over the money, still in bed with the IV dripping away.
Oh, did I mention I’m originally from Morocco? Yep, this all went down in a public hospital in northern Morocco while I was there for a family visit. Having lived in the U.S. for 24 years, I was blown away by the price and quality of treatment. Plus, I didn't even have insurance!
So, there you have it-my brush with disaster turned into a happy ending and a wallet that didn’t scream in agony.

Actually, I broke my leg a very long time ago and was rushed inside the hospital right away. Here's the kicker: you have to know someone on the inside. Idk if that's still the case today but, yeah that's how I got in. Good luck.

I am Moroccan American who lived in both Morocco and the US. In Morocco, you don’t need insurance to see a doctor, it’s very affordable and pharmacists also can prescribe a lot of the medications. If you walk to a pharmacy, just ask to speak to a pharmacists and explain the issue and they can tell you what you need to buy. So in your case, you needed antibiotics which is something that can be bought without a prescription. Emergency rooms in public hospitals are mostly free, so they are funded by the government, so you won’t get quality care. Whereas in America all medical expenses are insanely expensive. My mother just had a back surgery and her insurance paid almost 500k for that, which is crazy. She had a similar surgery 20 years ago in Morocco and she paid 6k. So in America they offer you quality healthcare, but you have to pay a hefty price for that. My kids have medical conditions and we pay around 20k between premiums and the deductible a year before the insurance covers them at a 100%. So it’s very hard to compare the health system for both countries. As a Moroccan resident, you should look into getting you health insurance, or have some savings in case you need something. The good thing is that you can see any specialist same day, whereas here, it takes forever to see one. I actually have an appointment scheduled a month before to see a dermatologist because I am not their patient. Also with my mom’s condition, the insurance kept denying her request for surgery. We had to go to the emergency and go through that to get her surgery done. Both countries have their pros and cons, so there is no perfect system in either countries, you just have to learn how the system work in there to make sure you and your kids stay safe. Also private hospitals are not that expensive, so if you really have a true emergency, just go to a private hospital. My sister has a don who has some medical issues, so she often takes him to a pediatrician hospital in the middle of the night and she pays 60$ which is very affordable compared to the $1000s of dollars you get when you go to an ER in the US

I have friend she needed to have urgent surgery, her husband took her to a private hospital, they refused to start the surgery and by the way her leg was hanging on her body and she needed help urgently but they just won’t start the surgery until her husband managed to get the money somehow to pay them then they took her in.
This is one of the reasons why I still hesitate to go back to Morocco to live, and like you said in America the last thing they ask about is money, first they save you they take care of your health problem, then they figure out how you going to pay or who will help pay the bills and if you don’t have money you don’t even pay anything.

Totally agree! Sadly, public hospitals in Morocco often don’t meet the standards you’d expect, especially compared to Europe and North America. Plus, there's a misconception among many Moroccans that the US healthcare system is terrible, which might explain some comments from people at the hospital. Private clinics generally offer great service, but I’ve heard horror stories about people being turned away because they couldn’t pay upfront. Morocco definitely has some big structural issues with healthcare that no government or politician has tackled yet. By the way, I really enjoy your videos-keep enjoying the beauty of Morocco! 😊

If you want to get treated in public hospitals easily, you need to know someone who works there, like a nurse or a security guard. That person will get all the work done for you in no time. The second method is to bribe someone there. If you do, you will be treated like the director. This is the sad story about the moroccan public hospitals 😢😢

Because of the expertise and skill of the Moroccan Doctors they saved his life. Today he is walking and running alert and oriented playing basketball against 20 year olds. Eating good like nothing never happened. There are excellent Doctors in Morocco. It’s important to have family and others involved too. We are in US now but will move to his home soon. in fact the public hospital in Morocco requires serious reform. For good reason, few people go there for care. I completely understand your concerns regarding an emergency situation that could arise for you or one of your children. If you carry out a paid activity in Morocco, either as an employee, trader, craftsman or business manager, the best option is to request registration with the CNSS (national social security fund). This will allow you to obtain coverage for your medical care and hospitalization costs for you and your children. By presenting your CNSS card you will automatically be taken care of in any private clinic. Important advice: Apart from the CNSS, you should not contact private insurance companies. First of all, they are expensive and above all their hospitalization cover offer is not always guaranteed. They always find an excuse not to repay the bill.

My family moved to the West African country of Liberia for several months when I was 13. The humidity was hellish. We ran the AC 24/7. The first time we went to a "supermarket" I honestly thought we were going to starve to death. But I digress. The divide between the haves and the have nots was everywhere. Thank God I never had to go to the hospital because the only hospital was nicknamed JFK = just for killing. It wasn't all bad in hindsight but when you are a child you tend to forget the bad stuff. We mostly ate at the Embassy because my father would have lunch with us and they had a swimming pool on the grounds and the food was not bad. My mother who was a high school teacher took off work and we were supposedly home schooled, but most of the permanent kids went to the one British school so we really only interacted with kids our age if we went to other people's homes. My mother had a dental issue, it is so long ago that it seems irrelevant now, but I am sure she wished she hadn't. I can't ask her but after we returned she tested positive for Hep. B. So we all had to be jabbed. Ugh! It is worlds away from Morocco which seems so modern in contrast, but I can see some similarities. You are smart to be cautious. Especially if the healthcare at the public ones is free.

You are right that it doesn't feel professional because they might be interns and the official doctor is maybe outside or whatever.
There are many changes upcoming to hospitals in Morocco and future doctors are protesting.
If you have money and insurance, you will choose private hospitals as many people do here in Morocco. You could've done a quick live or posted a question on UA-cam to ask about a good private hospital in Rabat and there are many.
The ER in Morocco is mostly bad but some departments are better than others especially Souissi, so until you know the in and outs or the situation gets better, go for the private one.

Hey Erin! I'm moroccan, born and raised. Lived my whole life in Morocco and moved to the US after high school. I studied medicine in the US. I have friends who became doctors in Morocco. When I compare my work conditions to theirs, it's horrible especially in the public field. Obviously there are many aspects to compare between the 2, but the US definitely has better quality which is far more important! As a physician, I care more about the quality of healthcare that my patients will get in most instances. Morocco is more affordable...yes, BUT even with certain private hospitals, the quality is still mediocre compared to the US. I can't generalize, but it is what it is! I'm glad your condition didn't get worse and you were able to get the help needed, but definitely go to other "well-known" private hospitals in the future! Healthcare in Morocco is currently undergoing many reforms so we're hoping for better days 😊

It sounds like the policy of paying upfront is in place to ensure that hospitals can cover their costs, especially since many people might struggle to pay their bills after receiving treatment. This approach can help manage financial risks for healthcare providers, but it can also be challenging for those who need immediate care but can't afford to pay upfront. It's a tough situation for sure.

In the USA, health care is completely private. Yes, they help you out, but then the bill which inmost cases very expensive unless you have some coverage. Wil Smith made a movie about the health care situation in the US. Also, as is tourist in the US, you will need to pay upfront to get medical care. Now, Morocco has public hospitals that are for poor people who can't afford to go to private clinics. In your case, infected tooth, you should have gone first to a pharmacy to get some antibiotics for at least 3-4 days to get rid of the infection and (yes, Morocco has antibiotics at pharmacies without prescription. I know in US & Canada you need a Dr's prescription, not here).
Dentist or Emergency Hospital can't actually do anything for an infected tooth until the infection is gone. Be there done that
SO REMEMBER PHARMACISTS CAN REALLY HELP YOU BEFORE GOING TO DR OR HOSPITALS THEY KNOW A LOT TRUST ME.

If you have a serious situation then the most important thing is that someone from your family comes with you to sign the documents and confirm that they are going to pay and that's it and they do everything quickly for you in a private clinic.

erin have u ever thought about what makes moroccans emigrate in large numbers? there are three things. i call them the three disasters (education, health, justice), especially education. just look at the world rankings and u will know why those who have little awareness emigrate. This is something systematically done by the state to make moroccans not know their rights, afraid of the police, afraid of those who have money. it's a jungle. there is a moroccan proverb that says those who don't know anything don't demand anything. And the state (The Makhzen) applies it literally. thank to "Poseidon" because I got out of the scary jungle.

To be very honest public hospitals in Morocco are for the lower class citizens. Middle class and above that can afford private so they do. Public hospitals are mainly free and paid for by the government and you don’t pay a lot for insurance so it’s just the most basic needs that are being covered, and sometimes even less than that so that’s why public hospitals aren’t great. Private isn’t really expensive and private hospitals are Amazing even better than in the us and Europe so please just go to the private hospitals from now on

I'm not sure about Rabat but in Casablanca there are state of the art dental clinics and they do great work. I live in spain and they charge on average 1200 euros per tooth for veneers , I got them done for 4000 dhs (400 euros) per tooth (12 in total) and they look so nice and natural. There was a huge difference in the price when I was done paying for everything. btw when they ask you if you are English or American, it is a legitimate question. They don't speak English very well, so they're not able to distinguish accents. Just like you won't be able to distinguish between Moroccan, Egyptian or lebanese accents.

Hi, i have thought about this matter, in which why the moroccan healthcare is so bad; I came to the conclusion that is a matter of mindset of the Moroccans. No medical failure is chased and reported publicly to force and to improve the sector for the better. people in the health care should take responsibility to willing to improve oftherwise the ministery of healthcare should take actions. unfortunatly, the wealthy of the country also do not criticieze the sector, rather they fly to Europe for their healthcare. as such nothing changes for the moroccans with average income…. hope your vlog gives this subject more attension

To give a quick explanation, a doctor in Morocco needs to study for 19 years to complete his studies, and when they complete 19 years, they graduate and most of them go to Europe, especially France, because of the high salaries or to private hospitals, why? Because public hospitals don't pay them much, so most of the doctors working in public hospitals don't complete 19 years of education, they are called "stager" here (they are working and completing studies at same time this give them more exeprience ) , I encountered one of them in Casablanca when I was getting my teeth fixed, it was a horrible experience, the doctor removed 2 molars and then he started talking to his friend and left me with blood in my mouth. this is called Brain Drain with no wars here morocco is ranked 23 out of 177 countries in the index of human flight and brain drain yes the life is cheaper and private education is on higher level even public one is not bad but why wasting time working here when you can get paid in europe x10 and work less that it wich you understand the whole problem to fix this the country decided to remove one year of studies for them so they cannot fly out to europe bcs they have one year missing but they refused this and start protests against it lol

I am Moroccan, emergency in public hospitals here are a joke and the health system in general not because we do not have good doctors or nurses but because the infrastructure the equipment i mean the staff can not really serve anyone without the equipments.. It is really frustrating but for you i think you can go to private hospitals and they are no where near the cost in America i know from UA-cam the prices are Ridiculously high. For the dentiste you should make sure your are in the cabinet of a dentiste doctor because there are also teeth professionnels or makers i do not know how to translate it to English exactly but these are not doctors and it is better to avoide them although they tend to charge cheaper
