Maintenance, security, and the manager were working on it for over an hour and a half. Finally I watched this video. We didn't have string but I had the elastic from a surplus hospital masks. I can't THANK YOU enough!!!

But I think at one point we didn’t fold it back far enough and when I closed the door the vibrations probably moved it in place. Anyway it took me about 30 seconds. Amazing video, great knowledge. Thank you. Also a key chain lanyard works too. That’s what I used. Don’t even have to cut it. Awesome video.
Totally works and worth every second of instructions. My hotel desk clerk lent me her shoelace even though she was going off shift in 5 minutes and I was back downstairs before she left to give it back to her! Saved me a lot of frustration on a business trip

My impatient wife had called a locksmith while I was trying this method (we are in Phoenix and it's 105 degrees). I wasn't able to get the first string I used to work bcuz there were no ball bearings to hold it in place. I finally found some Nylon string (tie down from local hardware store) which worked perfectly to squeeze between the joints and stay put. After I got it opened I was able to call the locksmith to cancel. He was surprised I got it opened. He told me it would have cost (starting at) $85. So thanks for this. I'm now my wife's hero and I saved at least $85.

I rent an apartment that has two bedrooms with a jack and jill bathroom connecting. Currently the doors have knob locks on the inside, however that compromises privacy for either of the bedrooms. Since both doors have extended jambs leading into the bathroom, I've decided to have knob locks on the bedroom side of the doors, then put swing bar locks on the bathroom side. This solution left me worried about an emergency situation where a bathroom occupant would find themselves unable to open those locks, but this video has helped assuage that concern. Thank you!

I watched this video on March 11, 2021. A thunderstorm caused the circuit breaker for my garage door opener to pop. I had a key to the front door however we have that exact same latch on the front door also. I used my shoelace. Played MacGyver and it worked like a charm. I tried ur method, it worked. It took me a couple try’s but I got in. Ur video definitely helped . The only hard part about was me trying to get the top loop to go in. But I got it done on my 4 try. My friend's Asian hands are thin but she said she couldn't do it. My hands are thick but I was determined. Great to know! My wife has dementia so we actually use this lock style to keep her from leaving as she may not find her way back home. My fear was that I would leave and she would lock me out. Fyi all our neighbors know about her illness but I do not want to bother them. Nice video!
I just spent 1/2 hour with my wife who has dementia trying to get her to unlatch a motel room latch. All her life she would latch the door. But now cant figure out how to unlatch it. Finally got it. But that was a little crazy. I’m getting some string so I can open in the future.

This is great! I frequently have my dog with me in hotels, and she being so smart, figured out how to let herself out when I have to leave her in the room for any amount of time. Literally, every time I've found her wandering the halls, or even let herself all the way out to the parking lot to find me. I'm sure the hotel staff must just love me and her lol 🙄. But I've been trying all along to figure out how in the world to lock her in the room from the outside, without also locking myself out. This looks like it'll be a lifesaver for me, can't wait to try it out.

Life saver, today our apartment was flooding, the apartment tenants came and put some fans to dry the walls, we got out the hose to go the my brothers to take a shower , when we came back the fan inside the house was so strong that move the window curtains and move the door lock, thanks to your video we were able to get back in side the house 🎉😂

I work security for some private condominiums. Some short term renters lock the main door keypad and also secured that lock from the inside. They left through the garage but didn’t have a garage door opener. So they were locked out when they returned from Disney World. Luckily I remember this video from years ago. Thanks

Although this information is very helpful per the many comments posted here, I now feel more vulnerable while staying in hotels. That bar felt like additional safety when traveling but it can obviously be comprised and now it has been broadcasted. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.
Thank you for this video. We were 5 single women in Panama City, Florida from Arizona. We rented a condo in a high rise residential community. We were there for a Jazz Festival, came back to the condo at 11:30 at night tired, cold and a bit inebriated. Somehow the latch on the door engaged and we were not able to get into our condo that we paid good money to rent. We called the owners who didn't answer their phone. So we were basically locked out in a town that had no rooms available at any hotel because of the Jazz Festival and we knew no one. So we were looking at sitting in the hallway of this condo high-rise on the 19th floor, freezing our asses off not being able to access our condo. I use UA-cam for so many things, so I thought let me search and see if there is a video. Low and behold there was your video. Fortunately we all had lawn chairs that had drawstring bags, hence the string we needed for the unlatching of the bar. You are such a lifesaver. We followed your instructions to a Tee and we were not confident that we had done things right, but when we closed the door and pulled on the strings, the latch was off and the door opened up. We were about to cry but instead we high fived each other and laughed about how this was some real MacGyver shit and we pulled it off. Thank you so much for posting this video! Thank you!!! Our DOG decided to paw it shut when we weren’t home and we couldn’t get in the house!!! The first time this happened I was able to use a Z screwdriver and take the lock off the door frame. But if it happens again I’ll know what to do! (I also have a system now that holds it flat against the wall when we’re gone, but dogs are smart and she may do it again!

I just spent 1/2 hour with my wife who has dementia trying to get her to unlatch a motel room latch. All her life she would latch the door. But now cant figure out how to unlatch it. Finally got it. But that was a little crazy. I’m getting some string so I can open in the future.

This is great! I frequently have my dog with me in hotels, and she being so smart, figured out how to let herself out when I have to leave her in the room for any amount of time. Literally, every time I've found her wandering the halls, or even let herself all the way out to the parking lot to find me. I'm sure the hotel staff must just love me and her lol 🙄. But I've been trying all along to figure out how in the world to lock her in the room from the outside, without also locking myself out. This looks like it'll be a lifesaver for me, can't wait to try it out.

Life saver, today our apartment was flooding, the apartment tenants came and put some fans to dry the walls, we got out the hose to go the my brothers to take a shower , when we came back the fan inside the house was so strong that move the window curtains and move the door lock, thanks to your video we were able to get back in side the house 🎉😂
OH MY GOSH IT WORKED!!! I locked myself completely out of the house I don’t have a key for garage house access door and forgot to remove the nightmare lock and was stuck with no way in! Windows are solid so no way of opening

Needed to run back to my car for something and legit thought "I don't need my keys to run to my car" and instinctively locked the door behind me. I work security for some private condominiums. Some short term renters lock the main door keypad and also secured that lock from the inside. They left through the garage but didn’t have a garage door opener. So they were locked out when they returned from Disney World.

Although this information is very helpful per the many comments posted here, I now feel more vulnerable while staying in hotels. That bar felt like additional safety when traveling but it can obviously be comprised and now it has been broadcasted. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

Thank you for this video. We were 5 single women in Panama City, Florida from Arizona. We rented a condo in a high rise residential community. We were there for a Jazz Festival, came back to the condo at 11:30 at night tired, cold and a bit inebriated. Somehow the latch on the door engaged and we were not able to get into our condo that we paid good money to rent. We called the owners who didn't answer their phone. So we were basically locked out in a town that had no rooms available at any hotel because of the Jazz Festival and we knew no one. So we were looking at sitting in the hallway of this condo high-rise on the 19th floor, freezing our asses off not being able to access our condo. I use UA-cam for so many things, so I thought let me search and see if there is a video. Low and behold there was your video. Fortunately we all had lawn chairs that had drawstring bags, hence the string we needed for the unlatching of the bar. You are such a lifesaver. We followed your instructions to a Tee and we were not confident that we had done things right, but when we closed the door and pulled on the strings, the latch was off and the door opened up. We were about to cry but instead we high fived each other and laughed about how this was some real MacGyver shit and we pulled it off. Thank you so much for posting this video! You just don't know, 5 women send you many thanks for this video that gave us access to our condo on a cold late night in an unfamiliar town!

All alone in the dark @ night. .. .. seriously it never occurred to me,. ..if i had a stroke, heart attack,... that getting into my room may take a while. Sec. mean life or death. I don’t think the fire department would do the string trick,... ...I’m sure they’d just bust it down. ,... ,... after I’m dead! I have a YT channel ,... but i think I’m locked in a room ,.... Thank you!!! Our DOG decided to paw it shut when we weren’t home and we couldn’t get in the house!!! The first time this happened I was able to use a Z screwdriver and take the lock off the door frame. But if it happens again I’ll know what to do! (I also have a system now that holds it flat against the wall when we’re gone, but dogs are smart and she may do it again!
