I would seriously buy tickects and watch it live
Me too. Whoever wrote this is a genius along the lines of Seth McFarland.
I would totally go and watch it
Same here, but if they don’t include the breakdancing ape, I will riot in the theater.
@@LvL_99_Red_Chocobo And You would have my axe in this case.
This might end up becoming another Simpsons' prediction that comes to fruition!
Quite possibly the greatest scene in Simpsons history
No, the hallucination when Homer ate the guatamalan insanity pepper chili is.
I agree
100%
Nope. Way too many scenes over 30 years to pick from. Especially the first 10 seasons or so.
Funnier than clown college, & that giant ant floating across the tv screen during the space shuttle broadcast!
The cast is perfect, from Chimpan A to Chimpan Z.
That DEFINITELY calls for a 'D'oh!!'

They committed to this one joke for two and a half minutes. The more recent stuff doesn't have this kind of patience, confidence in their material, or faith in their audience.
And to your point, your post about this 25 year old bit got 53 upvotes in three days.
This is when Connon O'Brien was contributing writer
it's like hms pinafore from sideshow Bob: musical need his time
Well, it sort of depends.
They can commit to this joke because it's a musical scene, and every single sentence is still a punchline in and of itself (due to the brilliant writers.) You're still laughing about the previous sentence or movement of the character and they're already rolling out another one. The over-arching joke of musicals turning to pop trash is always in the background, but that background serves as a breeding ground for more specific, tinier and direct "jokes".
In this sense, the writers still aren't meandering on a single joke or punchline, other than the "background" joke. Think of it like a stand-up comedian or cabaretier who says their best jokes because it's contextualized by the "theme" it revolves around. One very brilliant example of this, in my opinion, is Eddie Izzard in his show "Dress to Kill" in which all his jokes revolve around history.
That is different from relatively recent seasons of The Simpsons in which the writers would DRAG OUT the same joke for 20 seconds, even though the punchline probably already landed with the audience.
And then there's a third option: A joke can be relatively ok, get dragged out until it's bad, but then gets dragged out so long it actually becomes good again. An example of this is Peter Griffin hurting his knee, being in pain, and the scene of him wincing being dragged out far longer than you would expect. For some reason, this can be funny, perhaps due to the absurdity of the time spent on the joke.
Timing is half the joke, and the early Simpsons writers were brilliant at this sort of thing.
The murder of Phil Hartman has to be one of the greatest tragedies in voice acting and comedy, he was such a talented, hilarious guy.
Not even just the fact he was murdered. The fact no one has been charged with it
@@chriswelcome8102 well, it's difficult to charge a corpse unless you're a medieval pope. The murderer, his wife, shot herself the same day.
@@janberkemeier7406 My bad. I was thinking of Bob Crane
@Blue Mutt As unfortunate as this is, it's not particularly surprising - since the person he allegedly gave the cocaine to later died, and he was not directly involved with the murder-suicide in any way, the only thing you could charge Andy Dick with would be the possession/distribution of an illegal substance, based on hearsay. Peanuts to a guy in his position.
This is the first time hearing this, what a tragic incident. After checking Phil Hartman's wiki page, I've also learned he played as Ted in Jungle All The Way which happened to be one of my favorite Christmas movie.
Phil Hartman really contributed a lot to this show
It died with him
@@PwnZombie you might be right, because after season 9 the show went titanic. I lost interest gradually after the episode "The Principal And The Pauper."
@@xxxYouTunesxxx I though it was an interesting episode in a vacuum, but it was the moment where the Simpsons jumped the shark and stopped caring about internal consistency.
Phil Hartman was a great talent. He also played the genie on Peewee Herman's Playhouse.

That Ape's got some mad breaking dancing skills
I wonder where the Simpsons' producers found monkeys who could dance like that? Those chimps were nifty.
That one part has been with me since I saw this episode when it was brand new
*Break Dancing😁
That’s not an ape, it’s actually chimpan-R
This is probably one of the top five Simpsons moments/bits of all time for the show. Great idea, great music and lyrics spoof, great voice acting, great animation. It's such an odd, offbeat and creative choice for an off-broadway play. It also predates many of the modern movie to musical incarnations, Lion King, Shrek, etc, that theater is partial to nowadays.
That's right. It's pitch-perfect - gloriously silly - and stands as an example of the amount of creativity and effort that went into The Simpsons during its heyday. The amount of planning, song-writing, arranging, recording, animating, etc., that went into this is staggering - and all for a 2-minute "bit" in the middle of an episode. Most shows would simply put a red line through that part of the script and replace it with a less ambitious scene.
@@blatherskite3009 family guy would just replace it with a 2 minute clip of Conway Twitty
"The Simpsons" was ahead of its time in many ways. I say "was" because it no longer is.

1:29 "... from chimp - pan - A to chimp - pan - Z " ! Hilarious.
When I was a kid, I already knew who Jeff Goldblum was, but totally didn't realize that was him as Troy McClure's agent.
Back then they actually created characters for celebrities to voice. Now they use them as vehicles to make audiences watch their empty show.
I just noticed that today
Particularly ironic when you consider the send-up the did of Andrew Lloyd-Webber in ‘The Tall Guy’ which starred Goldblum.
Interesting... 🤔
Cool I didn’t know that
Plot twist: Someone had an idea to make this until The Simpsons did this bit.
Should have done it anyway.
Plot twist: this is overrated, overused and rarely every funny.
"I LOVE YOU, DR. ZAIUS!" Probably their best musical number. RIP Phil Hartman.
One of the absolutely greatest scenes of any TV show of all time. The context, the quality of production and the attention to plot and character interaction, making a totally absurd concept seem almost possible. The many levels of satirical commentary in just over 2 minutes is truly astounding.
Who thinks this would actually be a good concept for a musical? If Oliver Twist could become a musical anything's possible!

Kind of a shame that I saw this episode before ever seeing the movie.
And Spaceballs before this.
oh s**t. there goes the planet.
8 year old me asked to rent the movie because of this Simpsons episode
Simpsons is how I got introduced to a lot of classic movies, like citizen Kane and streetcar
@@lh9591 True, but at the same time I wish I had the childlike inquisitiveness of wandering into the original without the foresight of what will happen. Thanks to Scary Movie I already knew who Keyser Soze would be, and Spaceballs shielded me from the shock of the Alien chestburster (albeit watching all three movies in reverse didn't help).
A simple pleasure for sure, but a pleasure nonetheless. Just imagine watching Psycho for the first time ever without the outside references in popular culture.
But ultimately it's a sad Catch-22. Without the pop culture we wouldn't get new fans invested in the classics.
I think we all love Dr. Zaius.
And Phil Hartman.
I love how the last line is, "I love you, Dr. Zaius!"
Holy damn, this is better than all of the new Simpsons episodes combined.

this clip is still 1,000,000x better than the terrible CATS movie
It is better than the Cats stage musical.
Huh? is that closest you've ever come to seeing a staged musical, that wasn't even a live-action staged musical? What a weird comparison.
@@generalyellor2187 that movie is still terrible, just like everything else coming out of Hollywood and New York these days.
@@ellismarquez8410 everything coming out of Hollywood and New York these days, even the worst of it, even that CATS movie, is still more valuable than anything you'll ever contribute to the world, so I wouldn't tug on that thread if I were you. And Hollywood is the same as it always was, so for you to sneer at how things are "these days" is patently insincere. It is a common fascist trope, of course, appealing to a golden age that is supposedly better than the present. But you need to do a better job of recapitulating your programming.
Anything is better than the CATS movie. Even the OG stage version is better.
"Can I play the piano anymore?"
"Of course you can!"
"Well, I couldn't before!"
There was a nod to this in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" where John Lithgow's character was playing piano after receiving the alzheimer's drug.
Not sure if that was a nod or just a coincidence. But it's awesome if it was
Coincidence since this scene in the Simpsons happened years before the movie rise of the planet of the apes. Next time they should put "fun fact" at the beginning to make it more believable 🤣
@@carpathiantortoise7218 I think that what they were saying was that the movie was making a reference to the show, not the other way around.
This is a weird detail, but I just noticed they clearly drew the apes as if they were real, not as if they were actors wearing costumes.
Didnt notice, looks like you finally made a monkey outta me!
I love that a pop culture phenomenon from over fifty years ago is still relatively relevant.
I mean return to planet of the apes was around then too wasn't it
