When Your Negative Thinking Won't Go Away, What CAN You Do?

  • n this video, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch shares his thoughts on what to do when changing your thinking to improve your mood doesn't work because extreme states of anxiety or depression render positive thinking impossible. Instead, Douglas advocates a "bottom-up" approach in which you change your physiology to create the decrease in emotional pain you are seeking. This video was previously published under the title, "When Changing Your Thinking Isn't Enough."

when I have a panic attack I just go on duolingo and do exercises until the intensity lowers enough so i can go to phase 2. you can't be anxious and think about foreign language grammar at the same time. works for me, hope it's helpful to someone.

I have PTSD and do Chinese via Duolingo and exercices on Brain HQ for same reason - changing focus is one of the best tools and at 71 I'm changing my brain as well.

Everything you have ruminating and intrusive catastrophic thoughts in your mind’s eye, start imagining a blank white piece of paper instead. Do this every time the thought pops up, replace it with the blank paper. Helped me.

Thank you so much for all of your videos. I’ve had a lot happened to me 2 years ago, I worked very hard to get back to some sort of stability. Yet one day I woke up feeling completely exhausted as if ran over by a huge truck, out of energy, every regular activity became a burden even answering a phone call. These videos helping me getting through negative thinking and distancing myself from anxiety attacks, self doubts, pressure. I appreciate all the work that’s been done at your channel to make people feel better and see the light. Thank you for the support, guidance and lovely jokes which always elevate my mood! I wish the host Douglas and all the followers very well.

Hi Douglas: I discovered that anxiety is the anticipation of pain. Therefore, our understanding of pain will determine how pain-adverse we are. If we understand pain as an essential element for transformation, which can be positive or negative depending on how we process pain, then we can make choices to frame our disposition to pain so we don't view it as pointless, or the malicious will of a sadistic universe or punishment for unknown offenses, etc. The key is to not permit ourselves to parse our negative emotions in ways that lead to self-pity, anger, resentment, etc. By acknowledging our negative emotions and releasing them through forgiveness and a firm belief that enduring our circumstances and emotions positively, we can improve our threshold to deal with pain, we can be hopeful that our strength to carry painful crosses will increase even if the cross itself never gets lighter.

Panic attacks can come out of the blue,or grey sky!! I don't know how many times people in my life have just told me to just "Get over it"! It doesn't always work- I totally understand that, most people who don't have depression for most of their life don't!! Will try something out of what you have suggested!!🤗💯❤️🕊️😅Thank you Douglas!!

Complex trauma or cptsd can totally mean depression & emotional flashbacks which can feel like you're panicking. Cassie Winter on here. Pete Walker - book - "From Surviving To Thriving"...on here. Write. Read. Be still when you need to. Rest. Be gentle with yourself. Thank you for your content. Writing just basic stuff is good when feeling overwhelmed. Writing better than talking if you were very ovrrwhelmed since childhood & beyond.
