No freezing winters no long oppressive excessively hot summers, no monsoons, no tornadoes or hurricanes, no mass forest fires etc. The weather in England is mild and manageable, ie comfortable. My friend in Texas can't even walk her dog on the pavement in the 100 degrees plus summers because it will burn the dog's feet.
Watching your video from Scotland. We take so much for granted living here, so we are holidaying in England this year rather than chasing the sun and your video has given much inspiration x
Have you explored much of the North East of England- some amazing castles, villages, coastline etc etc Check out Robson Green’s programme on bbciplayer where he discovers hidden places all over the North East and North Yorkshire Presuming you haven’t seen this already or explored that neck of the woods that is! I can highly reccomend the new forest down near bournemouth area- there is some amazing scenery and wild horses and cows- easy reach of coastline near Bournemouth and some quaint little villages and towns- we went to Winchester for a look around and that was lovely! Have a nice trip wherever you choose 👍
Very true. The hassle and stress of airports, taxis ,language barrier , and acclamation periods to hotter climates . I usually feel I need another holiday to get over the one I just had. . The UK and Ireland have so much to offer on our doorstep. And ironically, it takes a foreigner to show us what we've clearly forgotten about.
A note about driving. The speed limit in the red circle (20) is the legal limit, not a suggestion. If you see no speed sign and there are street lights then it is (30), unless on a motorway. The (60) limit on narrow country road is not an aim, it is a maximum. Many of these roads would not cope with 60mph. You should drive at a speed appropriate to the road and conditions. If that means slower than locals, don’t worry. They often drive too fast as they know the roads.

Why does America not have heated towle rails? They are a fantastic invention. I loved seeing all of you enjoying England and yes we have great food. I used to live in a 1,000 year old house with 2 extentions, we had 2 Canadians stay for a night. They slept in the old part of the house. The next morning we asked how they sleped, they didnt, they were freeked at how old the room was compaired to there country.
They don't have them because they have no need to. They do there washing and then put into there dryers. No drying clothes outside for them. A bit stupid really considering the nice weather they get. Wasting money on electric just to get clothes dry in an instant. Like every American everything has to be done straight away.
@lizvickers7156 we do have dryers but also a lot of people will hang their clothes. I actually like the fresh air smell on the fabric after especially on the bedding.
My wife lived in Europe for 3 years. After we got married, we discussed trying to get back over there, but it never happened. She was from a military family. She lived at the RAF Chicksands military housing. I really wish she could have seen this video. She probably would have cried. Thank you guys so much. Take care.😊
I live 2 miles from Chicksands 😆 in Henlow . I’ve got such a connection to that base , I’m English but 2 of my Aunts meet US airman based there and ended up moving over to the US and my cousin Mandy ALSO meet a US airman from Chicksands but they have actually stayed , Yancy now works in the City of London as an IT engineer.

Hi Ryan and family. It's so great that you have family in the UK to show you around. I have American cousins myself and have visited in the past. Personally I think it's better if you visit somewhere and stay in that area. You get a far better idea of a place and the people than by trying to cram everything in. We are a small island but we have a lot of diversity within that island. I have lived in England all my life (57 years), but I can't say I really know the UK. I've seen bits of it and some things are common but it's the differences that make things really fascinating. Thanks for your great content.
Yes we love home but have great appreciation for the historian beauty of England... It is amazing that we can live somewhere and not appreciate it or even take the time to dive into to the history and beauty around us.
Most stereotypes about England come from the time surrounding WW1/2, with rationing, struggle etc. Like having bad teeth, when the UK consistently has some of the lowest rate of caries of the developed world. Confirmation bias largely keeps it going (like anywhere there are plenty of areas with cheap nasty food), and that the UK doesn't have a particularly distinct cuisine from some other north-European nations (e.g. Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia, etc.) as well as more 'stodgy' hearty winter food less common in warmer climates that is meant to warm and fill you during colder months, so it's easy to continue marking it as 'bland', compared to French or Italian cuisine which is more unique.
The Dukes of Norfolk are not royalty, but they're the next best thing! Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk, is, as Premier Duke, officially the top noble of England. He has many other titles - Earl of Norfolk, Surrey, and Arundel, and others. Really ancient Earldoms, before about 1450, can descend through the female line, and, as Earl of Arundel, the Duke is also Premier Earl, since that title dates from 1169! The Dukes of Norfolk have played a big part in our history, but quite controversial! The first Duke of this family was a crony of Richard III, and got the title in 1483. But two years later that man was executed by Henry VII. His son Thomas, Earl of Surrey, redeemed himself by utterly defeating the Scots when they invaded in 1513 at the Battle of Flodden, and got the Dukedom back. However, the Dukes of Norfolk fell out with our monarchy again because they remained Roman Catholic when the country went Protestant. At least one of them was again executed, and another, St Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, died in prison and became a Catholic Saint. Couple of things mate; The Premier Earl of England is actually the Earl of Shrewsbury (a member of the Talbot family). Whether a peerage can descend through the female line actually depends on how it was created (either by Letters Patent or by Writ of Parliament...age doesn't really come into it). Lastly being Earl Marshal only really became hereditary in the Howard family with the 6th Duke in the late 1600s.

Think you did a fantastic and wise choice, by sticking to exploring one area in your trip. Many people try and do everything (talking about myself now) and miss so much. I for the last few years have done the same, going to a single place abroad and thoroughly exploring it. So much more enjoyable and less exhausting. No one takes notice of them though unless they see a police camera van…then all other drivers flash oncoming drivers to warn them, so they slow down then.

Hi guys that tree in the grave yard is a yew tree . They were used to make long bows in the medieval period . They are also poisonous to cattle and that is why they were usually found in graveyards which would have a wall or fence around them protecting the cattle.

I'd love to see you going to a car boot sale. Imagine a massive field full of cars in lines. Plastic tables and blankets on the grass full of random stuff from garages, bedrooms, attics and everything else. Retro goods cheap. It's so fun ❤

Chichester is my home town where I was born and raised and still currently living in the outskirts. It’s a lovely town with lots of interesting history.
What a great choice to stay on arrival in the UK. Arundel is a lovely town but you do need to be fit to walk around it and up to the castle and cathedral.
Came across this due to, I think, UA-cam choices. I live just down the road from Arundel so it was strange watching you walk and visit all the places I have walked. So impressed with granddad who holds a fountain of knowledge about his town. He reminded me of my father who knew every street in london and kept its history in his head. Unfortunately, this year has been the wettest since records began for most of the time esp when you were here. I was envious when you arrived home to see that beautiful blue sky.
You get used to the 60 mph roads, you’ve got to remember us Brits have been driving them for years so as long as you stay in your lane you’ll be fine. It was easier for us when we did an west coast road trip in the USA because your roads are massive 😂
`Past Arundel Castle a few times when I was working in Chichester. But I only went to it once. I remember the rather long and tedious walk from the train station up to the town. It was a hot summer day. But I`m sure I remember there being a lake beneath the castle hill, containing some swans.
Yes there is! There's a pub called the Black Rabbit (went there a lot as a kid, food probably isn't great though), but it's right by the river with Swans cruising by. Really beautiful in the summer to sit outside for drinks.

The first roads in Britain were built by the Romans over 2,000 years ago (46-48 AD) many of which are still in operation today. It was decided then, partly because 85 - 90% of humans are right handed that it was a better choice to stay to the right when passing whatever other vehicles. Therefore, many of us Brits, Australians, South Africans and most Asian countries find it quite irritating to be told by American's that we are driving on the "wrong" side of the road. The word you're looking for is "DIFFERENT" 😢
I live in Littlehampton (about 10 mins from Arundel)! Took my girlfriend there for our first Valentines, it's such a beautiful town. Growing up we'd go to the duckpond there and feed the ducks, then scale up the chalky hillsides with tree roots coming out before scurrying down for an ice cream with our parents. Happy times.

I'm English and i have never been here! It's now on my bucket list. I went to Norfolk on holiday twice as a child, including the hot summer of '76 and I've always wanted to go back. All i remember is hiring a boat and my dad and grandad arguing who was captain, and sailing to Great Yarmouth!

my town in england is 20 thousand years old, it was a settlement, and was officially a town for 10 thousand years well was a village then a market town then a town. we keep finding neolitich and bronze age ruins whenever we expand our town or build roads, and recently we found a ro0man settlement and a bronze age burial area , thats how long people havbe lived in my town lol

Most British Castles were destroyed by Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector of England) after the English Civil Wars ended in 1651 and the tyrant King Charles 1st was executed. Cromwell did this so the castles could never be used for military insurrection or strategic dominance again. Mostly all that is left of them now is ruins, but there are some (such as Arundel) that were not destroyed (or not fully destroyed) and had major reconstructive work after, and are now stately homes/estates, though many have tourist areas that can be visited. Some significant Norman gothic castles have been preserved in their post-civil-war condition, and are still mostly intact, they make an excellent day out for a visit and many have displays of knightly combat, jousting, falconry, etc. for example Warwick Castle.

Nelsons flag ship ran aground up north off the coast of blackpool we have the wreck of his ship visible at low tide, and the wood from his stateroom and the engraved wall sits in Blackpool FC's board room, preserved there for all time. it was rescued when looters stripped the ship ttats about 5 hours away from where you are lol
@@RyanandPam no not much of it remains now mostly a skeleton, the capatins room hasd a sculpted wooden fascade with scenes on it, it got rescued and has sat in the board room of blackpool fc for decades if not hundreds of years but it was picked apart by scavangers and you can still see the skeleton of the ship
@@eddhardy1054 “Foudroyant” was Nelson’s flagship from 1799 until 1800. An 80 gun, two decker, launched at Plymouth in 1798. She retired from active service in 1812, staying in harbour service at Devonport until 1851. Foudroyant then became an instructional vessel in gun drill, before being sold out of service in 1891. Saving her from a German shipbreaker, entrepreneur George Cobb had bought her to use for exhibitions and training. The ship went touring seaside resorts and ports around the country. On 16 June 1897, the Foudroyant was lying at anchor two miles off shore, in five fathoms of water between Central and North Piers. That day she broke an anchor cable in a fierce and unseasonable June storm. The gale caused the Foudroyant to drag her anchor and strand on a sandbank to the north side of North Pier. The first photo shows The Foudroyant, beached in the severe summer storm about 600 yards offshore at around 9.00am. Conditions were so bad that the lifeboat had to delay launching until 1.45pm when the tide had begun to recede. By this time the wind had changed slightly, making a launch possible from the slade (ramp) at Cocker Street. Sadly, she was damaged and holed because her huge weight continually pounded on the hard sand. This is an historic RNLI image of the towns oar-driven lifeboat, the Samuel Fletcher of Manchester, pulling away from the Foudroyant. It’s about 2.15pm on 16th June 1897, having just taken her crew of 28 off the vessel. Alderman Thomas Challenor was in the advertising business with a contract to erect billboards against railway lines, extolling the virtues of Beecham’s Pills. Not one to miss an opportunity, within a week he took his team of painters and some white paint to the beach. They wrote in 3ft high letters “England expects every man to do his duty and take Beecham’s pills” along the side of the ship facing the promenade. In a perfect place for the crowds of onlookers to see! Both Challenor and Joseph Beecham were sued for it, in a case in Aug 1897. Cobb v Beecham and Challinor (spelled incorrectly at the time)… Challinor claimed he had misread a communication from Mr Beecham and was fined 40s. The verdict against Mr Beecham was a £50 fine. Beecham appealed against the verdict. Surprisingly not often mentioned is that another smaller sailing ship, the Sirene, caught the Pier and did some damage to some kiosks at the landward end. The Sirene was mortally damaged by being continually being pounded into the sea wall next to the pier. Unveiling the blue plaque took place on 16 June 1997, to commemorate the Centenary of the wreck of HMS Foudroyant. So the HMS Foudroyant is now beached on a sandbank at Blackpool - and obviously can’t stay there! It’s not the end of the shipwrecks though… Two salvage steamers working on dismantling the wreck were wrecked themselves, in force 4 winds on 28 July 1897. A month later, the Aurora was also wrecked in force 6 winds on 17 August 1897! It took 16 months to completely remove the wreck, and the catastrophes didn’t end with the Aurora. A year later, in August 1898, the salvage team were using dynamite - to the detriment of Mrs Gates of Manchester. When detonated, a 50lb piece of wood, studded with copper bolts, exploded out of the wreck and killed her, as she was strolling along the promenade! The anchor was stuck in the sand near the Metropole Hotel, marked by a hazard warning buoy. It wasn’t until April 1902 that it was recovered and put on display with 60′ of its chain, before being removed in 1903. In 1925 parts of the chain were seen, wrapped around some of the northern legs of the Pier. Keith Webster got in touch to say that he believed The Samuel Fletcher lifeboat had ended up on Stanley Park Lake. Can anyone confirm that? Many parts of the ship were sold as souvenirs for years afterwards. The figurehead and many other items are in Cobb’s former home at Caldicot Castle. There’s a chair in the Masonic Hall in Adelaide Street. Parts of Nelson’s cabin are in the boardroom at Blackpool Football Club. Fleetwood Museum has a beam from the ship. Jenkinsons in Talbot Square built their fine staircase from the salvaged oak. And Sally Johnson said “some of the panelling on the staircase in the house I grew up in, in Thornton, was also from the Foudroyant.” A Mr Fletcher bought 1000 tons of wood from the wreck, along with the copper. Enterprisingly, he set up the “Foudroyant Furniture Manufactory” at 36 Talbot Road, making souvenirs and trinkets. Did you know? Blackpool FC’s boardroom was said to be haunted by the ghost of Lord Nelson? Mysterious cool spots are frequently encountered…. !

Yes, I love it here. I lived in Australia for five years and despite the greatness of Australian people I was very glad to move back to The United Kingdom. Actually went on my very first trip to Scotland last year, loved that place.
Del Boy from a U.K TV series called….Only Fools And Horses ….a good laugh…especially the U.k’s favourite one where Del Boy falls on the floor thinking he’s about to lean sideways on a pub bar…but without him realising, the bar tender opened the lid top…so hen he went back to lean on it, it was an open gap. There’s another one, based on a true story, where they went to clean a couple of chandeliers and the one guy was in the attic unscrewing the bolt to the first chandeliers and they were ready to catch it in a large sheet up some ladders so shouted back ok, but the guy up in the attic was loosening the bolt on the opposite chandelier and it crashed to the floor… one of the characters Boysey I think, knew a guy this happened to, hence why they put it in the series. You’re not correct that the speed limit is a guideline only. Speed limits are most definitely mandatory and we have speed cameras to catch out those who go above, though to me it’s insane to have a 60mph speed limit on country lanes because there are often no pavements for pedestrians and horse riders often go out hacking on the country lanes and there are also a lot of blind bends.
That was what the locals told us, hmmm maybe they were trying to get us in trouble! Everyone seemed to be going so fast too but with the smaller road it prob looks much faster to us then what it was.

I’m old enough to remember Fahrenheit. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit you divide by 5, multiply by 9 and add 32. Yes, we English got rid of Fahrenheit in the 1970s because it’s just plain silly.

I agree I think we should have them. We do heat our bathrooms but not heated towel racks
@lizvickers7156 we do have dryers but also a lot of people will hang their clothes. I actually like the fresh air smell on the fabric after especially on the bedding.

My wife lived in Europe for 3 years. After we got married, we discussed trying to get back over there, but it never happened. She was from a military family. I live 2 miles from Chicksands 😆 in Henlow . I’ve got such a connection to that base , I’m English but 2 of my Aunts meet US airman based there and ended up moving over to the US and my cousin Mandy ALSO meet a US airman from Chicksands but they have actually stayed , Yancy now works in the City of London as an IT engineer.

Hi Ryan and family. It's so great that you have family in the UK to show you around. I have American cousins myself and have visited in the past. Personally I think it's better if you visit somewhere and stay in that area. You get a far better idea of a place and the people than by trying to cram everything in. We are a small island but we have a lot of diversity within that island. I have lived in England all my life (57 years), but I can't say I really know the UK. I've seen bits of it and some things are common but it's the differences that make things really fascinating. Thanks for your great content.

Of course it does! I don't know what's with the trend calling third world slop better than English food, but it's nonsense.
Most stereotypes about England come from the time surrounding WW1/2, with rationing, struggle etc. Like having bad teeth, when the UK consistently has some of the lowest rate of caries of the developed world.
Confirmation bias largely keeps it going (like anywhere there are plenty of areas with cheap nasty food), and that the UK doesn't have a particularly distinct cuisine from some other north-European nations (e.g. Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia, etc.) as well as more 'stodgy' hearty winter food less common in warmer climates that is meant to warm and fill you during colder months, so it's easy to continue marking it as 'bland', compared to French or Italian cuisine which is more unique.

The Dukes of Norfolk are not royalty, but they're the next best thing! Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk, is, as Premier Duke, officially the top noble of England. He has many other titles - Earl of Norfolk, Surrey, and Arundel, and others. Really ancient Earldoms, before about 1450, can descend through the female line, and, as Earl of Arundel, the Duke is also Premier Earl, since that title dates from 1169!
The Dukes of Norfolk have played a big part in our history, but quite controversial! The first Duke of this family was a crony of Richard III, and got the title in 1483. But two years later that man was executed by Henry VII. His son Thomas, Earl of Surrey, redeemed himself by utterly defeating the Scots when they invaded in 1513 at the Battle of Flodden, and got the Dukedom back.
However, the Dukes of Norfolk fell out with our monarchy again because they remained Roman Catholic when the country went Protestant. At least one of them was again executed, and another, St Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, died in prison and became a Catholic Saint.
But the Duke of Norfolk - who owns his castle - is also Earl Marshal of England, a title the family has had since at least 1320. This still means he is responsible for organising coronations and state funerals, and he took a prominent part in Elizabeth II's funeral and King Charles's Coronation.
The family has recently distinguished itself by administering their estates - from where their money comes - in an environmentally friendly way by encouraging the wildlife on field margins. And they still made money!
The Middle Ages were fond of puns. The French for 'swallow' is 'hirondelle', which sounds like 'Arundel'. That is why the swallow.
Couple of things mate; The Premier Earl of England is actually the Earl of Shrewsbury (a member of the Talbot family). Whether a peerage can descend through the female line actually depends on how it was created (either by Letters Patent or by Writ of Parliament...age doesn't really come into it). Lastly being Earl Marshal only really became hereditary in the Howard family with the 6th Duke in the late 1600s.

The speed sign are NOT guides they are the Maximum speed you can drive. If you get caught exceeding the limit you get a ticket.
No one takes notice of them though unless they see a police camera van…then all other drivers flash oncoming drivers to warn them, so they slow down then.

Hi guys that tree in the grave yard is a yew tree . They were used to make long bows in the medieval period . They are also poisonous to cattle and that is why they were usually found in graveyards which would have a wall or fence around them protecting the cattle.

What a great choice to stay on arrival in the UK. Arundel is a lovely town but you do need to be fit to walk around it and up to the castle and cathedral.

Came across this due to, I think, UA-cam choices. I live just down the road from Arundel so it was strange watching you walk and visit all the places I have walked. So impressed with granddad who holds a fountain of knowledge about his town. He reminded me of my father who knew every street in london and kept its history in his head. Unfortunately, this year has been the wettest since records began for most of the time esp when you were here. I was envious when you arrived home to see that beautiful blue sky.

You get used to the 60 mph roads, you’ve got to remember us Brits have been driving them for years so as long as you stay in your lane you’ll be fine. It was easier for us when we did an west coast road trip in the USA because your roads are massive 😂

`Past Arundel Castle a few times when I was working in Chichester. But I only went to it once. I remember the rather long and tedious walk from the train station up to the town. It was a hot summer day.
But I`m sure I remember there being a lake beneath the castle hill, containing some swans.
Yes there is! There's a pub called the Black Rabbit (went there a lot as a kid, food probably isn't great though), but it's right by the river with Swans cruising by. Really beautiful in the summer to sit outside for drinks.

The first roads in Britain were built by the Romans over 2,000 years ago (46-48 AD) many of which are still in operation today. It was decided then, partly because 85 - 90% of humans are right handed that it was a better choice to stay to the right when passing whatever other vehicles. Therefore, many of us Brits, Australians, South Africans and most Asian countries find it quite irritating to be told by American's that we are driving on the "wrong" side of the road. The word you're looking for is "DIFFERENT" 😢

I live in Littlehampton (about 10 mins from Arundel)! Took my girlfriend there for our first Valentines, it's such a beautiful town. Growing up we'd go to the duckpond there and feed the ducks, then scale up the chalky hillsides with tree roots coming out before scurrying down for an ice cream with our parents. Happy times.

I'm English and i have never been here! It's now on my bucket list. I went to Norfolk on holiday twice as a child, including the hot summer of '76 and I've always wanted to go back.
All i remember is hiring a boat and my dad and grandad arguing who was captain, and sailing to Great Yarmouth!

my town in england is 20 thousand years old, it was a settlement, and was officially a town for 10 thousand years well was a village then a market town then a town. we keep finding neolitich and bronze age ruins whenever we expand our town or build roads, and recently we found a ro0man settlement and a bronze age burial area , thats how long people havbe lived in my town lol

Most British Castles were destroyed by Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector of England) after the English Civil Wars ended in 1651 and the tyrant King Charles 1st was executed. Cromwell did this so the castles could never be used for military insurrection or strategic dominance again. Mostly all that is left of them now is ruins, but there are some (such as Arundel) that were not destroyed (or not fully destroyed) and had major reconstructive work after, and are now stately homes/estates, though many have tourist areas that can be visited. Some significant Norman gothic castles have been preserved in their post-civil-war condition, and are still mostly intact, they make an excellent day out for a visit and many have displays of knightly combat, jousting, falconry, etc. for example Warwick Castle.

Nelsons flag ship ran aground up north off the coast of blackpool we have the wreck of his ship visible at low tide, and the wood from his stateroom and the engraved wall sits in Blackpool FC's board room, preserved there for all time. it was rescued when looters stripped the ship ttats about 5 hours away from where you are lol

@@RyanandPam no not much of it remains now mostly a skeleton, the capatins room hasd a sculpted wooden fascade with scenes on it, it got rescued and has sat in the board room of blackpool fc for decades if not hundreds of years but it was picked apart by scavangers and you can still see the skeleton of the ship
@@eddhardy1054 “Foudroyant” was Nelson’s flagship from 1799 until 1800. An 80 gun, two decker, launched at Plymouth in 1798.
She retired from active service in 1812, staying in harbour service at Devonport until 1851. Foudroyant then became an instructional vessel in gun drill, before being sold out of service in 1891.
Saving her from a German shipbreaker, entrepreneur George Cobb had bought her to use for exhibitions and training. The ship went touring seaside resorts and ports around the country.
On 16 June 1897, the Foudroyant was lying at anchor two miles off shore, in five fathoms of water between Central and North Piers. That day she broke an anchor cable in a fierce and unseasonable June storm.
The gale caused the Foudroyant to drag her anchor and strand on a sandbank to the north side of North Pier. The first photo shows The Foudroyant, beached in the severe summer storm about 600 yards offshore at around 9.00am.
Conditions were so bad that the lifeboat had to delay launching until 1.45pm when the tide had begun to recede. By this time the wind had changed slightly, making a launch possible from the slade (ramp) at Cocker Street.
Sadly, she was damaged and holed because her huge weight continually pounded on the hard sand.
This is an historic RNLI image of the towns oar-driven lifeboat, the Samuel Fletcher of Manchester, pulling away from the Foudroyant. It’s about 2.15pm on 16th June 1897, having just taken her crew of 28 off the vessel.
Alderman Thomas Challenor was in the advertising business with a contract to erect billboards against railway lines, extolling the virtues of Beecham’s Pills.
Not one to miss an opportunity, within a week he took his team of painters and some white paint to the beach. They wrote in 3ft high letters “England expects every man to do his duty and take Beecham’s pills” along the side of the ship facing the promenade. In a perfect place for the crowds of onlookers to see!
Both Challenor and Joseph Beecham were sued for it, in a case in Aug 1897. Cobb v Beecham and Challinor (spelled incorrectly at the time)… Challinor claimed he had misread a communication from Mr Beecham and was fined 40s. The verdict against Mr Beecham was a £50 fine. Beecham appealed against the verdict.
Surprisingly not often mentioned is that another smaller sailing ship, the Sirene, caught the Pier and did some damage to some kiosks at the landward end.
The Sirene was mortally damaged by being continually being pounded into the sea wall next to the pier.
Unveiling the blue plaque took place on 16 June 1997, to commemorate the Centenary of the wreck of HMS Foudroyant.
So the HMS Foudroyant is now beached on a sandbank at Blackpool - and obviously can’t stay there! It’s not the end of the shipwrecks though…
Two salvage steamers working on dismantling the wreck were wrecked themselves, in force 4 winds on 28 July 1897.
A month later, the Aurora was also wrecked in force 6 winds on 17 August 1897!
It took 16 months to completely remove the wreck, and the catastrophes didn’t end with the Aurora.
A year later, in August 1898, the salvage team were using dynamite - to the detriment of Mrs Gates of Manchester. When detonated, a 50lb piece of wood, studded with copper bolts, exploded out of the wreck and killed her, as she was strolling along the promenade!
The anchor was stuck in the sand near the Metropole Hotel, marked by a hazard warning buoy. It wasn’t until April 1902 that it was recovered and put on display with 60′ of its chain, before being removed in 1903. In 1925 parts of the chain were seen, wrapped around some of the northern legs of the Pier.
Keith Webster got in touch to say that he believed The Samuel Fletcher lifeboat had ended up on Stanley Park Lake. Can anyone confirm that?
Many parts of the ship were sold as souvenirs for years afterwards. The figurehead and many other items are in Cobb’s former home at Caldicot Castle.
There’s a chair in the Masonic Hall in Adelaide Street.
Parts of Nelson’s cabin are in the boardroom at Blackpool Football Club.
Fleetwood Museum has a beam from the ship.
Jenkinsons in Talbot Square built their fine staircase from the salvaged oak.
And Sally Johnson said “some of the panelling on the staircase in the house I grew up in, in Thornton, was also from the Foudroyant.”
A Mr Fletcher bought 1000 tons of wood from the wreck, along with the copper. Enterprisingly, he set up the “Foudroyant Furniture Manufactory” at 36 Talbot Road, making souvenirs and trinkets.
Did you know? Blackpool FC’s boardroom was said to be haunted by the ghost of Lord Nelson? Mysterious cool spots are frequently encountered…. !

Del Boy from a U.K TV series called….Only Fools And Horses ….a good laugh…especially the U.k’s favourite one where Del Boy falls on the floor thinking he’s about to lean sideways on a pub bar…but without him realising, the bar tender opened the lid top…so hen he went back to lean on it, it was an open gap.
There’s another one, based on a true story, where they went to clean a couple of chandeliers and the one guy was in the attic unscrewing the bolt to the first chandeliers and they were ready to catch it in a large sheet up some ladders so shouted back ok, but the guy up in the attic was loosening the bolt on the opposite chandelier and it crashed to the floor… one of the characters Boysey I think, knew a guy this happened to, hence why they put it in the series.

You’re not correct that the speed limit is a guideline only. Speed limits are most definitely mandatory and we have speed cameras to catch out those who go above, though to me it’s insane to have a 60mph speed limit on country lanes because there are often no pavements for pedestrians and horse riders often go out hacking on the country lanes and there are also a lot of blind bends.
That was what the locals told us, hmmm maybe they were trying to get us in trouble! Everyone seemed to be going so fast too but with the smaller road it prob looks much faster to us then what it was.

I’m old enough to remember Fahrenheit. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit you divide by 5, multiply by 9 and add 32. Yes, we English got rid of Fahrenheit in the 1970s because it’s just plain silly.

It is funny cause my father kept saying that the castle seems to just be like background noise. he said they forget to appreciate it and take it for granted
