One of the things I'm proud of in my country is the preservation of old buildings, yes new stuff gets built, but you can't tear down historic buildings which means we retain a link to our past & heritage.
Glad you enjoyed your trip. 🇬🇧🤝🏻🇨🇦

As a Londoner of 68 years, like many my age I had to move out further and further over the years to buy a decent property and now lived most of my life outside London. But while I'm still a true Londoner when I go back I can still find areas I don't know much about and explore as you did as it's such a vast city. So many of these kind of videos but this is maybe the best I've seen.

Great video guys keep it up!
As you’re a history buff I’ll point out the following - OLD Scotland Yard was right next to where you were standing when you asked that question - the striped building - white Portland stone with red bricked building with turrets on the corners was the original Victorian building for the metropolitan police , in the sixties the MET (police) moved into a ghastly ugly 1960s block in Victoria near Buckingham palace - it was called NEW Scotland Yard - because they moved - but - now they have moved again and are almost back where they started - they are in a building next to the original one - so the new new Scotland Yard is actually nearly old Scotland Yard….. 🤣👌🤷👏

The church and Mitre pub are in Ely Place which actually started life as Ely Palace. Back in the day a fella called John de Kirkby bought up a bunch of land in what is now Holborn. In 1290 he kicked the bucket and left it all to the see of Ely.
Ely is a town in Cambridgeshire that has an important cathedral. A see is an area of a bishop’s ecclesiastical jurisdiction. This is important because since way way back, the bishop of Ely has been given a seat in the House of Lords - and still is today. To fulfil their governmental obligations the bishops would need some city digs, and what better place to build some than on this heft of land they’d just inherited.
They set to work, transforming the place into a series of houses and expansive gardens. They also ordered the construction of a church (for obvious reasons), and a pub (for even more obvious reasons). But the most important thing here is that in order to avoid the taxes and rules of London law, they saw to it that Ely Palace was governed under their own laws - those of Cambridgeshire.
In 1772 Ely Palace was sold to the crown, and the bishops commissioned a new property in Mayfair.
The crumbling old palace was promptly torn down and replaced with rows of terraced houses that you can still see today. With the palace gone, a more fitting name for the area was needed. They dropped an A and Ely Palace became Ely Place. The church that was part of the old palace also remains - the only part that wasn’t torn down in 1772. It’s still named the Church of St. Etheldreda, as it was at its founding, and it’s one of two buildings from the reign of King Edward I (1272-1307) to still stand in London.
The pub, Ye Olde Mitre is same pub that the bishop of Ely had built in the 1500s. The building has obviously changed. The one that stands now was part of the 1772 reconstruction, but a pub under that name has stood on that site since 1546 at least. Ye Old Mitre’s licences were still issued by authorities in Cambridge right up until the 1960’s.

      Another good hidden pub to look for is The Red Lion in Crown Passage, near Jermyn Street in Piccadilly;
legend has it that there's a secret tunnel leading to Buckingham Palace in the cellar and previous members of the Royal Family would use it when they fancied a quiet drink.
Crown Passage itself is very interesting too, like a little village in the middle of London.

They're showing you places dating back 500+ years but you talk about 'colonialism'? Of course you do.
The village I grew up in was 7 miles from the Roman city of Chester ('Deva Victrix'), when much of Britain was under empire.
I'm particularly amused that you aim a comment about colonialism to Canadians! People of European descent benefiting from living in a country that is as it is (for example rated a 'full democracy') because of colonialism.

Some very nice old buildings. Another good mix of old and new. It's definitely worth a visit. Leicester square is a 10 min walk from there also.

A tip for you. In the UK if you want a pub, especially in smaller towns & villages, look for a church or church spire, you will usually find a pub or inn. Thats because in the old days the monks or priests used to make beer or cider so they were close to churches or monostaries.

If you can find footage of an old (1950/60), British ,TV program called 'No Hiding Place' the opening scene, every week, was of a police car leaving the old New Scotland Yard.

@@Finding-Fishit's nice to see your appreciation. You're a lovely couple. Another fun fact about the New Scotland Yard building is when it was under construction in 1888 a female torso was left in the cellars they were building as a taunt by an unknown serial murderer. Part of the Thames Torso Murders series. The press dubbed it The Whitehall Mystery and it was initially linked to Jack The Ripper who was active that very same autumn. The victim was never identified and the killer (of at least 4 women) never caught.
