If you are mindful of where the signatures are, removing pages from a book that is sewn is pretty straightforward. Each signature is typically 4 to 7 pages. (That is 4 to 7 pages folded in half, with the stitching down the center, making 8 to 14 pages in the book, if that makes sense.) If you find the center of a signature (where you see the stitching), it's easy enough to take out that entire page. Then, from there, you can count back a page or two and remove another page. Once you've carefully torn it out on one side, you should be able to easily remove it from the other side. Then, move on to the next signature and repeat.
What a wonderful time in Goodwill , absolutely enjoyed browsing with you, I miss this adventure ...... thank you so much....... we have been in lock down forever here in Melbourne. Cheers
Wow! That's an awesome store! Nothing like that near me. I would have needed a whole day just to look at the books! Next time you go, I'll give you a list 😉
Love to see where you shop...it looks like my country and I will absolutely going to look after new books to day..I really miss looking after books. But I have SO MANY and I have bought some really old ones and when I comes home I think they are so beautiful that I don’t want to cut them off so I am going to make a old book case in my living room with only old beautiful books. After we moved into this old farmhouse we have the space and I have alway wanted a old bookcase. I absolutely LOVE old books.📚 I have seen some different people make altered books and some says the sew in pages is the best because they don’t get ripped out so easily. When I rip out my pages I just find the middle of the signature and rip out 2-4 pages and does it with all the signature. My pages sits very secured. I have tried the glued pages but they gets very easily ripped in the spine. Maybe I do something wrong. I will work on the side with you and I am look forward to seeing what you make 👏👏👏 Thanks for sharing your lovely ideas 🙏😀 Hugs Tina 🍁🍂
Thanks For your feedback, Tina! Your bookcase with the old books will surely be amazing!!!! Your method with the sewn in pages will work, but you need to be a lot more methodical on which pages you take out. I will add glue to the spine as we glue pockets down so that should help keep them in. Happy you will be joining me in this project! ☺️❤️👍🏻
I make altered hardback journals but I use card stock on 10 to 12 double-sided spreads. The last few I have made are used books with glued and spines. However, I have found that with these spines, by the time I have torn out extra pages and glued everything together, the two facing pages with card stock have split apart at the spine. The spine is still in the same place so I realize this seems/sounds strange LOL. Just today I had to go back in and add washi tape to the inside edges of about half of the pages. Have you ever had this occur? TIA ♥️

@@whitneykosters9102 what does she use to paint it, acrylic paint? I want it to have a vintage feel but have no idea how to go about it, any tips? The Mod Podge is a great idea 👍 thanks!
Stephanie, she uses acrylic paint. You can actually add color to your Mod Podge to make it look older, yellowed or even patina if you want.
Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see all your episodes! I just recently started my altered book journey! And I'm loving it! My spine ended up a bit lopsided though. I wonder if I did something wrong?
Thanks Naomi! I wonder if your book was not made well and got weak from tearing out pages....
@@49dragonflies I was hoping it was just that and not my fault! 🤣
OMG, I want to come and visit you - we have NOTHING like that warehouse where I live!!! We have charity shops/goodwill, but if books are slightly damaged; they get thrown away. I dread to think of all the stuff they toss out!
Come and visit me! (After COVID) 😃
Thank you. Surely you could remove every other signature from a sewn book or remove both pages from a pair. I’m glad you didn’t choose the lost girl book, my rudimentary German had already let me understand the meaning before you said.
Thanks Lucy! Yes, you could certainly do that, you just need to be more methodical than with glued pages.
WOW !! what city is this Good Will?? Nothing like the ones in Louisville. Hope yours is not too far to travel?? TFS.Linda
I live in Vienna, Austria! 🙄
wow i would love to go to this store. the goodwill in my city is trash. its messy and never has anything good
I’m sorry yours is no good! 🙄
to have the opportunity to go to a thrift store in any European country!!!! here in the states, most of the awesome vintage “old” stuff is new
There are no thrift stores in my country (EU) but sometimes the libraries get rid of some books.
Oh it was so lovely going on an excursion with you.... Those marbled covers were gorgeous but I was a little worried about you buying the Fanny Hill one as its a bit rude, saucy even but they were such lovely covers though 😉😁❤️
Thanks sweetie, happy you enjoyed the little excursion! 🥰❤️
I have been to three Goodwill stores and looked through all the books and cannot find a book with a glued Spine. Any suggestions?
Maybe you can find a cheap new one at a Dollar store or similar.
