It's 1993, i'm 16 years old. I was driving back to school from eating lunch at Mr Gatti's Pizza, and this song played on the radio. I instantly liked it. After school, I went to Circuit City and bought the Cranberries CD. I still have that CD.
A great reaction, songs by 'The Cranberries' which I recommend are: "Pretty", "I Still Do", "Uncertain", "Ode To My Family", "Daffodil Lament", "Salvation", "I Can't Be With You", "When You're Gone", "Forever Yellow Skies", "Ridiculous Thoughts", "Free To Decide", "Animal Instinct", "This Is The Day". There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it, I'm not ashamed to admit. Dolores had the most beautiful voice with her strong Irish accent , sadly taken from the World far too early.
They were looking for a singer and Delores auditioned. They told her to write a song and come back. She never wrote a song but she did and came back to the band with this song and the rest is history!
There´s a lot to say about this video and references. The concept of the video is inspired by art filmmaker Jean Luc-Godard, especially in his 1965 film "Alphaville" (you can find it on UA-cam). The video was recorded in Los Angeles and sought to honor all of the filmmaker's artwork. In addition, the context of the music is very clear: all the characters are in the same hotel, looking for a partner. Men watch "semi-erotic" images of a stripper, which seems to refer to the male illusion about women and sex, while women make up in the mirror trying to look like sexies. But Dolores, who naively seeks a partner in this context, just watches all of this. It is clear that her romantic vision is different from this social context, it is more naive. That is why she sings about betrayal (I swore I would be true and honey so did you / so why were you holding her hand?). This context of relationships based on image and stereotypes is exactly where Dolores doesn't fit. In the end she returns to her room alone and closes the door. I needed some time to understand the message of the video. It is not obvious. There are several artistic references (for example, the video stripper is the famous Blaze Starr, star of the 1950s). Watching for the second or third time considering all the points and the loyalty message is charming and profound. More here: www.imdb.com/title/tt7019132/
I liked them, they're first album was pretty good anyhow. They sound very similar to an English band "The Sundays" from the late 80's.This song came out right around the time of the music industry trying to commercialize the porgressive, punk and alt rock genres "the great musical dying".
Please react to the Zombie video it is essential if you want to grasp what the song is about. I would be interested to know what you think of the song before having seen it. 'Ode to my family' is another of theirs well worth reacting to. Cheers.
I had always heard this song but never knew the name! Glad I saw this reaction; I agree with your dissection of the lyrics. Would be fun to see more Cranberries reactions!
One of my all time favorite tunes. I'm emotionally touched every time I hear it, being a hopeless romantic. Delores has an amazingly beautiful voice. She passed away 😩 a few years back, and I know she struggled with pain, and a subsequent addition to pain pills.
I love all their music its sad that Delores is no longer living its a shame because all of the music we could have had. Love your reaction as always ( this is coolcoyote by the way lol) it would be cool for you to do zombie but the video is pretty deep and could make you cry just saying
The most hauntingly beautiful voice i have ever heard in my life when i first heard when on my school holidays back in 90s the song was Dreams n instantly i was in love with Cranberries n Dolores though I'm a Grunge listeners they say musik has no boundaries because when it's beautiful it's beautiful
I have started to listen to the Cranberries like for a year I have heard 4 albums The first 4 And so far I love ALL the songs, besides salvation But omg i didn't know how good this band was And it makes her death in 2019 so more sad for me because she had a beautiful voice
Probably the first song I’d heared from them and has a special place in my heart. So wish I’d not not turned down an opportunity to see them live around 10 years ago - about the time I developed tinnitus and stopped going to gigs. Now I wear ear defenders and can enjoy gigs again, sadly not the cranberries:(
Hello, hello! This is a classic. It brings me bittersweet memories, nothing bad happened but I guess the melancholy that evokes the music makes me a little blue.
This song, about an adolescent girl who feels used by a guy who professes his love, and then gives it to another, without declaring his intentions clearly. It’s an experience most of us have experienced, and it leaves one feeling betrayed and used, a fool. Knowing that Delores wrote this song directly from her own life’s experience makes it even more touching and sad, almost mournful. This is a very meaningful song. RIP Delores. Your impact will never be forgotten.
Dolores has said that this song was inspired after her first meaningful kiss (first love?) when she was 17/18? years old. So yes, a young love where maybe she wasn’t ready to let it go.
To each their own! 😂😂😂 my favorite Cranberries song. I do think it’s the most catchy of their melodies. But you are correct, they were never as big in America. ❤❤❤
My friend thinks this is the most catchy too! It's probably just because I'm more familiar with the other ones, so they catch my ear more. But I loved this one!
Please do Zombie video, and if you're up for a twofer, check out their live performance in Paris. Ode to my Family is a great one, and live version of Promises. May want to check out cover of Zombie by Disturbed. I am like you too...didn't pay enough attention to The Cranberries back in the day, but they are one of the greats, a deep catalog if you go down that rabbit hole.
RIP Dolores, what a tragedy 😢 Yes it’s a beautiful but sad and very soulful song with a heartbreaking theme. It was one of their songs that turned me into a pacifist, it was Zombie; war and fighting of any kind disgusts me and makes me so sad and angry. As always your reaction and analysis is very good.
Great Reaction. I love THE CRANBERRIES. I was scheduled to blog about them. After Dolores O'Riordan passed away I couldn't take the assignment. It hurts to listen to "Dreams" even though I Love It!
Yes, please do the Zombie music video... You may have heard the song, but if you really sit down and listen/understand what the song is about, it hits hard... And then, watch Bad Wolves version/tribute of Zombie... More hard hitting...
Youd be surprised how catchy this was lol. “You know im such a fool for you, you got me wrapped around your fingeraaaaah do you have to do ya have to let it linger”. It was the ULTIMATE love song of the 90s. Mothing better.
The 90s were something else and women pretty much owned it. If it wasn't Dolores, it was Amanda Marshall, Alanis Morrissette, Chantal Kreviatzuk (sorry, I'm Canadian), Brandy,, or of course Whitney Houston.
I love the Cranberries music and this video in particular but not because I understand the story behind it. For me, it's more about the artistic stylisation behind it. I also really like the photography of Anton Corbijn, who did the photography for the U2 Joshua Tree album. Something about the stark black-and-white imagery appeals to me as a photographer.
The Cranberries and Dolores are an Irish Treasure ! Another current Irish Treasure that Brian Fagan ( from in the comments ) and I know, and you should too is Allie Sherlock ! A young Irish Busker setting all social media platforms on 🔥 fire ! 🎤🎸🎶
Love The Cranberries. Dolores's voice is iconic and unmatched. So many great songs. My personal favorite, for what it's worth, is Twister. Also - this song on NPS's Tiny Desk concerts is definitely worth a listen. And no confusing video (I think artists are sometimes at the whim of video directors who try too hard to be creative!). ua-cam.com/video/0Ty7Cg642LU/v-deo.html
You know how every once in awhile you catch a band that no one else knows and they blow up? The Cranberries and David Grey were two that really stand out for me. I found both when none of my friends or anyone knew who they were. I still love that feeling and it's so special being like the only one who "knows" LOL.
React to Zombie, powerful, powerful song & video. 1.5 BILLION views on UA-cam. Context: IRA carried out a bombing in England and two boys aged 3 & 12 were killed. Delores wrote the song out of a sense of hopelessness and frustration that the majority of Irish people thought this was wrong but had allowed themselves be cowed into silence. Watch it through in one go, no stopping. Review/react at the end. Very important for this video
Lots of videos had zero to do with the songs. Often the video idea was pitched by a director and the bands would just go along with whatever sounded the most interesting or most fun or least work. Sometimes the band would even appear in their videos. Just depends.
YO! Koality check! It's your channel! Do what you like! ZOMBIE and DREAMS are better videos. ZOMBIE especially gripping I'll say. So yes. Play it! I'll be there. Just call my name, and I'll be there. Just look over your shoulders honey, oooo! Sorry! JACKSON 5 moment!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
No. She went to her local teenage disco (in rural Limerick at that time, this would be fairly harmless, take it from me, I'm from Limerick, a little bit before Delore's era) and got off with this young lad. The next week, he was with someone else. Teenage love
@@MrLeadb1 Nope. Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan wrote the music for this song before Dolores O'Riordan joined the band. Originally, it had lyrics written by the group's first singer, a bloke named Niall Quinn. When O'Riordan auditioned for the band, she had some ideas for the song, and after she was hired, she wrote her own set of lyrics, turning it into a song of regret based on a soldier she once fell in love with.
Nope you're wrong, it was about her first kiss from a local Limerick boy when she was around 16/17 @rickb.4168 She grew up in Limerick....about 4/5 hours from the nearest British soldier at the time! 😂
Pretty basic stuff… it’s about a girl being mistreated by her boyfriend and seeing him with another girl, yet unable to break free because he lets their relationship linger… in easy terms, he was a dick. The video was shot in a film noir style, the older guy with the flashlight is a PI looking for signs of cheating.
I'm not a cranberries fan, the appeal of zombie and its dodgy video is lost on me, but i absolutely love this track and the video photographs Dolores O'Riordan at her most captivating.

It’s crazy how a song can bring back so many touching emotions and memories
It was the first CD I bought with ma own pocket money
Same
It's 2024 and idgaf what you were doing at 16
Rest in peace dear D❤
This song would easily make it into my top 25 favorites ever. I absolutely love it!
This is one of my top 10 best songs of all time
I can’t argue with this
What's number 11?

Ode to my family is beautiful.
Pure nostalgia. Sounds like driving to the zoo in my families station wagon as a kid.
Oh my god I love that! I love how sounds and smells can remind us of specific times. The best. 🤍

Honestly as soon as you said it was inspired by Jean Luc-Godard, it explained a lot. Hah!
Also, in the video, there is a strong clash between a voyeuristic culture and the subject who is uncomfortable being a non-consensual participant.
Perhaps the most hautingly beautiful voice in the history of rock music. Yes, music video for Zombie in particular is very relevant to the song.
Hope Sandoval has entered the chat.
I never could figure out what the video has to do with the song lol.

Great reaction, Jenna! I thought that Zombie was the only Cranberry song I knew. However, as soon as the music started, I recognized it.
The shot of Dolores closing the door behind her at the end now breaks me every time since we lost her.
I bet she doesn't even know she's dead.
When you are gone is also very beautiful.
