  • Audi's S5 is not as dynamic as the BMW 435i and not as good a deal as the ATS Coupe, but if my money were on the line I'd be very tempted.

      yeah, it's definitely more like 333 to the wheels, at the least. Driving this back and forth from a new camaro, or mustang for example, and it feels faster even.

    Excellent review Alex, as always. If I was in the market for a luxury sport coupe, the S5 would be at the top of the list. I prefer it's handsome, understated looks to the flashier competition.
    But there is one little issue I have with it. Why does the badging say 3.0T when it's a supercharged engine?

    I love the A5. New, its pretty expensive here in Europe. But price falls quickly, so its possibly to pick up a great ten year old S5 with the V8 (not the V6T which it has now) for 15k in euros. Thats cheaper than a new Volkswagen Golf in basic trim. Would be a no-brainer for me. I do have my license for a few years, and as soon as i get a job next year I definitely want an A5 once.

    Audi pipes sound from the engine through the speakers aswell. I have a 2015 S5 and was told this and also heard it for myslef. If you put the DriveSelect into comfort and then to dynamic, outside there is no difference but inside the car you can hear the noise change, and can hear it come from the speakers.

    435 has a cheaper price, you are correct however the 435 has never beat a S5 in any instrumented handling or straightline speed test between the cars. Motor Trend and Car and Driver have 2 recent ones you can review. Also, the RS5, beat the M4's time (although the driver complained about understeer), in the last apples to apples lightning lap, in which they competed. To each it's own, good review, but I would take the performance "facts" with a grain of salt...

    Owned my 2010 S5 (V8, 6MT) since 2013. I have absolutely zero intention of parting with it before it becomes too costly to maintain. It's been almost flawless for 100,000 miles so far. Knock on wood.
    But yeah, the rear seats are for insurance purposes. I'm quite surprised to see a 8/10 for the rear seats. Then again, I'm 6'1" and all of my friends are over 6 feet. Back seats in the S5 are fine for a short jaunt, but I wouldn't want to be back there for more than 15 minutes.
    Then again, I keep the rear right passenger seat clear for occupants. 3 adults in comfort is doable as long as the rear passenger is on the right side too fight for equilibrium with the front passenger seat. "Scoot your seat up!"
    The problem isn't leg room necessarily, it's the sloping roof line. It looks great, but tall people will bend their necks in the back seat.
    But I didn't buy it to be a school bus. Just my wife in the passenger seat and 354HP in front of us. "Floor it babe."
    Yes dear.
    (My 2010 also has a 200MPH speedo...which is just nice to look at at least, since the gub-nuh kicks in at 155MPH....or so I've read......yes......read..........)

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому +2

      mountainhobo Not really. In reality for most modern sedan/coupe comparisons the sedan is lighter due to the way they designed the vehicles. Sometimes there's a weight balance benefit, but that;s also not much anymore.

    • @GrandHuevotes
      @GrandHuevotes 9 років тому +2

      Inherently sedans are more rigid than coupes but in certain vehicles they can tune them to where the coupes are more rigid. as an example the BMW e46 sedan is more rigid than the BMW e46 coupe by a substantial amount but for the new BMW 3 and 4, the 4 is more rigid due to chassis tuning (additional underbody reinforcements)

    This car reminds me looks wise of my 99 solara that I had years ago. Why Toyota started to make it look like a bubble after that is beyond me and that's probably why people stopped buying them. That car had the same body as the sc 400 just different bumpers and obviously better interior and motor wise was like the sc 300. If you put these cars in a side by side comparison just going off of looks they look a lot alike. Years ago I put 18 inche wheels on mine with 9.5 inche tires so it sat like a BMW or audi of today , I actually loved that car with everything I did to it while keeping it simple it looked a lot like a way nicer car than a Toyota.

    A question re all "newer" offerings from (most) all manufacturers...
    Why so much emphasis on the multitude of "additional features" both safety and luxury, (larger displays, lane, distance monitoring etc) in new cars across the board in essence, when simply using a hand held cell phone is illegal.
    There is an inconsistency here I find startling. Is it just "marketing" or does anyone actually use this stuff?

    Alex I'm pretty sure Audi uses supercharger because it hasn't yet produced/released a turbocharged 6 which competes with the rest. that's all it comes down to. these supercharged engines from Audi are old and recycled. producing a turbocharged engine takes quite a bit of time and resources and doesn't happen overnight. same deal with Toyota and Honda and that's why they're lagging behind so much when it comes to turbo engines. as a result Audi Toyota and Honda competition can't really compete with the rest of the world in terms of power and fuel economy.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому +3

      Ve g There's also a preference for superchargers, Jaguar does the same thing. R&D expense factors into it as well of course, but Volkswagen/Audi does seem to have a thing for superchargers.

    Is the 435i an appropriate comparison to the S5 given the S is Audi's "sport" model, and the 435i is the non sport model? Wouldn't the S5 match up against the M4? Thanks.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому +3

      The M4 corresponds to the RS5, the S5 to the 435i and the A5 to the 428i

      Alex on Autos I guess so. I just read that "Audi conveniently or awkwardly placed the S5 right in between competitive offerings in terms of performance and price."

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому

      godman1979 I suppose, if you want to look at it that way. The oddity is mainly that Audi calls it the S5 rather than just having an A5 2.0T and an A5 3.0T. The BMW parallel is the best because Mercedes and Lexus don't really have a three-prong strategy against the A5/S5/RS5. Lexus just has the RC 350 which is a little faster than thr A5 and the RC-F which is a little slower than the RS5. Mercedes has the C-Class and the E-Class coupes which don't really translate all that well to the A5/S5/RS5 either.

      Alex on Autos I see your point. I really appreciate you responding to me. Your reviews are the best! Not only are they the best on UA-cam, they're the best of any I've seen on TV.

    I love the S & RS series and am in the market for a new vehicle but after researching multiple reliability forum's etc. I think I will have to pass. I hate that but they ranked extremely low in multiple (around 10) different forums and studies.

    I personally think the lexus sedans would be so much smoother and reliable than this. And the interior seems so much nicer in a lexus than a audi. When i first saw the interiors in the germans i was pretty disapointed. I noticed germans like bmw vocuses on their performances and not their interior. Very disapointing. Lexus veichles are beautiful inside and out and their drive is great. I think germans need work harder on their interiors but their exteriors are great. Except bmw, bmw looks outdated with those kindeys gril

      Germans prefer a more classy look, its still very nice and high quality. Lexus is as bold as it gets and they try to make everything flashy and alot of people dont like that, both of them are very high quality none the less

    Your paying for a $60,000 car and you get alcantera seats which really sucks. What happened to nappa leather. Why should we have to pay extra for that. I think audi should reconsider their packages and just make install everything for what were paying.

    • @Zondu
      @Zondu 8 років тому

      +A_FED The alcantera is better for holding you in place vs leather. The alcantera is also very nice in my S5, I've never once wished it was all leather.

      @segocarib 8 років тому +1

      +A_FED Well, I'm not sure Ferrari onwers are pissed off with their alcantara interiors. Alcantara is a better material than Leather for durability, and abrasion (means holds you in place better). You should reconsider you comment.
