    It's ok Tim, I'm on your side. Returns just had a much more thought provoking story. Sure it had some camp, but Batman has a comic book precedent for campiness. I do agree with everyone else that the visual presentation was lacking compared to '89 though.

    Tim, buddy. You’re right. It’s so much better than 89. The music, visuals, characters, story... it’s better in literally every aspect.
    That opening sequence is a masterpiece. We would not have the art-deco visuals of TAS if it wasn’t for this films influence.

    I thought the name Max Shreck was just a reference to the actor who played Count Orlock in Murnau’s Nosferatu. I know Tim Burton is a big fan of that movie, so I just always assumed that’s why he named the character that.

    • @berndjahnke9331
      @berndjahnke9331 4 роки тому

      The original actors name in Nosferatu is "Max Schreck". "Schreck" is a german word that could be best translated with "scare" or "fear". So its a fitting name for Batmans "Max Shrek" too.

    Max schreck is the actor who played Dracula in nosferatu. Not only is the vampire a call back to Batman. There is even a nosferatu Batman comic that isn’t that bad. It’s also a nod to 1930s German expressionism, Which is a influence on Batman and all Tim burton films. Dracula is also a type of Faust film. Mac schreck also sells his soul in Batman returns to penguin.

    I prefer this over the '89 Batman; it's pushing all of the appealing parts of that movie to more of an extreme. These Burton era movies are fun to watch because they are all so goofball. There isn't a compelling story in any of them, they don't feature authentic performances, they are just well crafted, high-volume silliness.

  • @thedefinitionisthis
    @thedefinitionisthis 4 роки тому +8

    This is definitely the Batman movie I really have liked less, and less, every time I've watched it. Tim Burton achieved success with '89, so it's not surprising he got a lot more creative power with this one. It shows, but it doesn't make it good. Probably the one thing I like about this movie is Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.... But I do kinda hate how over-the-top she is, basically getting powers by being bitten by a gang of cats. I HATE Danny Devito's Penguin.... The decision to make him an actual "bird-man", gushing black oil out of his mouth. Nah, I'm not down with that. A lot of the stuff that is "iconic" about this movie, is just dumb to me. Everyone always gushes over that shot of Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne brooding in his office, before the bat-signals shine through his window. Yeah it looks cool... but it was established in the first movie that he is a public figure, AND hosts parties in his mansion. Is it really necessary or smart to have batsignals AT HIS MANSION activate when Commissioner Gordon throws up his signal? Lol. I liked this flick a lot as a kid, but I definitely have come to dislike a lot of it as I've gotten older. It is easy to see why WB switched gears with "Batman Forever" (for better or worse). And also: THANK YOU GREG! To everyone who knocked points off Affleck's Batman for killing, and yet praise Keaton's as the best despite the fact he's killing fools with a smile on his face: Fuck all y'all haha. Keaton's Batman kills, and enjoys it. If we're gonna be consistent, let's be consistent haha

    Batman took way too much of a 2nd billing to the villains in this move. You could probably say the same about Joker in Batman 89, but Batman himself was still a much more compelling character in the first move. Keaton played him as tethering on the edge of sanity much better.

      It's early still, but I expect Batman Returns and The Dark Knight to end up as my #1 and #2, for completely different reasons. One delivers the closest thing to a Batman that feels like it could exist in our world, the other is a strangely surreal approach that isn't afraid to embrace some of the pulp of the comics while still giving it more of an air of legitimacy. Different times, different approaches, different movies. Trying to compare them directly against one another truly feels like comparing Apples and Oranges.

    Like, Catwoman’s origin is that she gets killed by being pushed out of a window, but she comes back because... she gets licked by cats? And then she gets the power of... bring super flirtatious and making tons of backflips?
    The camp was so prevalent and you were just meant to accept that things just happened, but I really couldn’t. I felt like this was earnestly a bad movie, and I couldn’t believe how many nice things people had to say about it. It was an enjoyable bad, like to see how constantly incoherent it became, but I really could not get into it.

      He has told all about Batman in the first movie so he concentrated on new stuff in the second movie. The newer Batman movies repeat itself over and over (like all superhero movies).

    "This bitch is crazy!!!" Hahahahaha! I love Michelle Pfiefer's Catwoman. I don't care about comic book accuracy- we got that with TDK Trilogy. I love her performance- Nick, 100% on point. When Bruce pulled her out of her crazy, it's a small but enlightened moment. She's a goddamn rockstar!

    • @GregOrCreg

      I don't think he's the most comic-book accurate Bruce Wayne by a long shot. Affleck had the misfortune to appear in some of the worst Batman films, but in terms of appearance and demeanour, I think he came closest to capturing the essence of Bruce Wayne (the animated series is still the gold standard as far as I'm concerned). But I do think Keaton's quirky, lonely, little-boy-lost take on Bruce Wayne, whilst far from faithful, is still one of the franchise's most compelling performances.
      As far as any actor playing Bruce Wayne goes, nothing is as memorable as "You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts!!"

      I can't put my finger on it, but Keaton does read as a more believable rich orphan to me than Bale.

      @@MikeSW Keaton strikes me as better conveying the disturbed and traumatised aspects of Bruce Wayne, although I still associate Bale more as the wealthy playboy. Keaton usually has more of a working/middle-class vibe.

    I've just watched both the Burton Batman movies and wow I can't believe how bad they are. I usually have different opinions than Tim but wow am I with him on these two. These movies are BAD. Returns is leagues better but still very bad. I've always heard these were good but I am stunned to see how actually bad they are. I could not wait for 89' to end and while that wasn't the case with Returns I still can't say its great but I completely agree with Tim that it leans into what it is and is consistent.
    Keaton is a fine Batman and may have been great with a few more movies but compared to Bale and Pattinson? No way, he barely compares. I am interested to see his return in the DCEU... I guess... but like what has people so excited to see his return? I would still put Affleck above Keaton but I still hate how anti Batman both of their Batman are. Welp anyways, interested to see how Forever and B&R are as I've never seen those either.

    Thank God you guys saw sense with the returns batsuit and ranked it number 1. Does anyone remember the batman returns snes game? It was a double dragon style side scrolling beat em up. Unlike Nick, I thought batman icing clown fools was cool as hell when I was younger.

      "Batman Forever" is not my favorite Batman movie, by a long shot.... But honestly, i think it gets a lot of underserved hate, and is unfairly paired with "Batman & Robin" in terms of mediocrity. "Forever" did do a few things right, and actually put Batman front and centre, unlike the other films from this era. And i don't care: I liked Val Kilmer as Batman lol.
