  • Sarom Rho, national co-ordinator for Migrant Students United, says Ottawa's new cap on study permits punishes international students when it should be focused on the institutions that are exploiting them.

That's true.. I mean I know I brought my mom, sister and girlfriend with me to stay at my dorm at college, but I can see how that might not work for everyone.. Lol. Leaving family is part of the post secondary experience.. Time to leave the nest, if you have a partner then they can study too - the program wasn't designed as an express lane to pr for themselves and family, but that's essentially what it is. I work at a college, very few students leave afterward - vast majority stay, which is fine, when it's sustainable and in balance.

This lady has to be educated about the difference between right and privilege.
1st Canada in hindsight was lenient about taking in numerous students who are some of them tag along their spouse and children. Not their Fault. Still the cap logically has to be put in place.
2nd I don't see IS being scapegoated. If you're the host or homeowner and you noticed your resources are not enough to sustain you and your own citizens who are your priority, then to whom you should put restrictions first, your own family or the outsiders? Obviously the outsiders. Canada offers quality education. Canada does not demand foreigners to come to study. Being an outsider, you cannot demand from the host to provide for your needs -- that is just abrasive and feeling entitled.
3rd these restrictions are in place because sadly IS has been majorly advertised for so long as a path to PR. Which is not always true.
Think of Canada as a ship, if it's at a brink of sinking due to overcapacity, you don't tell Canadians to move out nor throw away your own supplies just to lighten up the load. You simply put a halt taking in outsiders and if needed tell those who are already in the ship to find another boat. Canada is only doing what they have to do as a nation or else all people including the outsiders will sink together.

I know since you're a citizen you're probably not aware. Comparing to the last few years, PR approvals are getting hard to get for an average applicant. Very high scores in which those people with high level skills and experiences will only be accepted. With the scoring the gov is actually only permitting professionals such as doctors, nurses, tech skilled workers and the likes. If not, those who have been approved has an employer that badly needs them and has already been assessed as part of the need of the province. PRs have been very target the past few months as well weherein for example for a certain draw, only health care workers, next draw only agriculture workers etc.
See? You guys wouldnt be able to say no to these people if you need them and the gov proactive on that level.
The real problem here was the students not having support from school. Support that doesnt mean your tax needs to go to the international student, but support like dorms for example.
When I studied here in Canada, the school doesnt even have a dorm. In some other countries I did an exchange, they have dorms for students. They stay inside campus, eat in the cafeteria. Even just as simple as having dorms and only accepting students that can fit to these dorms, then you are refraining them from being a rental competitor. Rather, they can pay the school rent then the school can add the money from rent to create local student scholarship programs and lessen them from being a competition to the cost of living. It is safe as well for internationals.

Sarom mentions that the students are victims of this and not the perpetrators. I have to agree, I don't think screwing up the Canadian housing market is a goal of these students when they come over. Obviously the goal is to seek education at best or seek employment for remittance at worst. Regardless of the option the goal is not to mess with housing. That being said, it does the raise of question of whether or not international students are ENTITLED to such a wide scope of access to Canadian PR. I think obviously international students ought to be afforded protections against exploitative landlords and schools, that's a given. That being said, it's also benefits them if we limit the number of study permits available as this will also lessen their rents and costs of living as well.
I don't think the solution the housing problem is purely a demand problem, we are at peak construction capacity in most provinces partially due to a workforce that simply not large and specialized enough. Clearly there needs to be more done to encourage more workers to join housing construction. That being said, we should use all levers available to us to control this and one of them naturally is going to be the demand side, aka the number of people looking to buy/rent housing.
