Wood Turning a Rain Stick

  • I woodturned this rain stick out of 2 maple logs. It was a fun and slightly challenging lathe project, as I've never had to to connect two logs that I turned. I wish I could have made this a little bigger, but I'm limited by the size of my lathe. But it was still good beginner practice learning how to join 2 pieces of wood together. I may try this in the future using resin.
    My tools:
    Resin: amzn.to/2nUhFPg
    Finishing Oil: amzn.to/2oAFPP6
    Carbide Chisels: amzn.to/2NUiEdq
    Face Shield: amzn.to/2Ac4Cvj
    Center Finder: amzn.to/2ld06Ju
    Jet Lathe: amzn.to/2qG2wD5
    Nova Chuck: amzn.to/32tJvkm
    Starbond Glue: bit.ly/2RFrayA
    Respirator: amzn.to/2N7mxfm
    Miter Saw: amzn.to/2ZpjuBW
    Drill: amzn.to/2XtnW0G
    Square: amzn.to/2VaCNzW
    Clamps: amzn.to/2UvPSiZ
*if you shop through these links I may receive a small commission. The price is the same for you, but it helps support me as a beginner woodturner in my quest to get a bigger lather to make bigger projects, and I really appreciate it!

When I first read the title I wondered “ what on earth is a rain stick?”. That’s pretty cool! Don’t know if I could fall asleep to it, but still cool.😎🌧

Cool little project man. I love the simplicity of the inner pieces and parts. Only suggestion would have been to use mortise and tenion style joint to join them together. Think lidded pot. This would have given you more glue surface and some long grain to long grain connection. End grain glue joints are notoriously weak. Bravo none the less
Edit: blank show up yesterday evening. And man i am pumped to spin that thing. I hope I do it justice when i do. Thanks again.

That would have been the right way to do it. I was worried about having enough material after figuring in how much I'd screw it up until it fit haha.
Hope the blank turns ok. I wasn't happy with the bubbles, wish I did a better job of it. And that driftwood can be REALLY catchy. I learned the hard way haha

It looks awesome, really makes me want to do more with the lathe. It doesn't really sound that good, but maybe that's the video.

Nice work on the 2 piece rain stick! One thing about maple 🍁... Lathe or no lathe it takes some work to remove that fiber!

Next time around I'd suggest cutting a mortice and tenon style recess and lip - they don't need to be exact, but the lip should help locate the two against each other and give a greater glue surface area.

You're getting pretty good with that saw 😁
Nice shiny new Forstner bit extension eh ? 😁
    Nice tee too ! 😁
Was that you wife pulling up in her Shelby at 10:09 ? 😁
I had to look up What is a Rain Stick. It turned out Pretty Good - sounds like rain 👍 It is fragile I'll wager 😮 A butt joint on end grain is the weakest joint one can make. I was thinking it'd be a lidded box just with a very odd looking lid.
And you'd asked about templates for curves. I generated and traced out a Fibonacci curve for a knitting bowl slot - still in the works. And you'll need a template if you ever do a production run. Or maybe matching candlesticks. I think of hyperboloids and such as I cut sometimes. See As Wood Turns latest vid. You have something you're planning ?

Yeah I finally got the extension! And nothing special I'm planning for curves, but they never turn out how I see them in my head so I feel like a need training wheels so to speak

Cook Woodworks what I will sometimes do is cut the silhouette of what I am aiming for from 1/4 plywood and use double sided tape to attach it to the lathe under my blank as a guide

Previous month I was able to gather my first five figure income ever!!! I've been working for this provider over the internet for two years now and I never been happier... They are paying me $95 per hour, and the most important thing about that is the fact I am not that tech-savvy, they just required standard knowledge about internet and elementary typing skill...Amazing thing about this is that now I have more free time to spend with my family. I am in a position to devote quality time with my friends and family and look after my babies and also going on holiday break with them very routinely. Don't ignore this chance and try to respond fast. Let me show you what I do... *acttoday48.com*
