Yes, the harp is interesting, but you played it simply spectacular. As they say: it's not the brush that makes the picture, it's the hand that holds it.
I just listened to your demo again. And your solo blew me away - again. Possibly the best harp solo I've heard to date. Your phrases made sense, very lyrical. And, unlike many improvisers (not just on harp) you know how to use space, to let the music "breathe". This is what I strive for, on trumpet and blues harp. Once it a while I really hit it right. An improvised solo should always be "telling a story", not just a bunch of notes. You've obviously got chops to burn but you don't just show them off. Well done, my man.
It certainly sounds great with you playing it. I played a bit when I was possibly 10 or so. My Mom bought me a Hohner Goliath harmonica in about 1955 that I still have today. 👍👍
Great playing! Amazing how good this sounds. Harmonica players are always going on about microphones, effects, and amps etc, but it all seems superfluous when you simply hear someone who can really play it
Next couple of GMs I purchase I'll be sure to let Hohner know that Ronnie sent me! Nice to see the company innovating on their product line!! That intro you play on this advert video is gorgeous!
I really enjoy watching your videos because they include the right details and have some amazing tunes coming out of you. Always brings a smile to hear you play. I hope one day to be as skilled as you.
Dude can you hear that awesome sound coming from the back? Yeah that’s my dad playing blues on the rear of a Cadillac.. Awesome sound and design! Thanks for the review!
Sounds like Hohner did it right . . .again. I love the GM, and I was worried when Hohner discontinued it. It looks like it’s airtight, too. Ronnie, you make that harp talk, sing, cry, wail. Just tasty playing
One of the best harps I had an old Golden Melody many years ago, I miss it a lot. It has a satisfying clean tone and I can hear its jazzy feeling, specially on the high notes. Thanks for your review, Ronnie!
Hi brother i been using golden melody harmonicas for a couple years now .i really love them, Rachelle plas is definitely the queen of golden melody and i have learned a lot from her and yourself by the way.Im looking forward to try the new design. Also before i go ,i want to say thanks about your advice regarding your video on the Hohner rocket F sharp ,i ended up getting one and its one of my favorite. Thanks brother for helping us out ,i really appreciate it. Much love to you and the family
I left Horner for Lee Oscar. 50 years playing, I can hear the reeds are settled in for a great tone. No more soaking in beer! South Side Chicago, baby! Thanks
Just bought two. Had to immediately open them both up and tighten up the gaps on the bottom like 6 of the draw and a few of the blows. It made it play a lot better.
I haven't gotten the new Golden Melody yet, I'm stuck on the previous model, and love it immensely. I'm going to try a find as many of the old models before they leave the market, because I love the way they fit. The same with the PentaHarp... haven't gotten any yet.
Certainly does have a unique look .. makes you want one. Thanks for the review Ronnie, always nice to hear you play. I'm sure when I buy one I'll sound just like that 😁
I always like the Golden Melody, they project like a trumpet; and that housing looks sturdy and acoustic, to further project the sound. Excellent playing and demo BTW!
My new GM in G arrived today !! And what a DISAPPOINTMENT !! I know I am not Howard Levy, but I do know how to do all draw bends well enough to say that this harp came out-of-the-box with so poorly set gaps and reed shapes that it was extremely difficult to play draw-bends 1', 2" and 2', while the hole 3 draw bends were impossible. So I went out and bought a T7 screwdriver , took the GM apart and saw clearly that the reed gaps and shapes were a disaster for holes 1, 2 & 3 -- what a lemon . After working on them, I began re-assembling the harp: next negative point found was that the reed plates no longer have "guides" (as in the old GM) so that it was much more difficult to hold them in the correct position so that the reedplate screws would pass into the holes in both plates. Once re-assembled it was playable (but I will still have to repeat all of this because those draw bends are still not ideal). Positive points: nice and loud, good tonal quality, good feel in my hands and between the lips.
Sorry to hear that. I'm guessing that's a rarity since folks I know that have one so far, are telling me that they're playing well. It can happen but retailers WILL except a return. It's Hohner's policy now for both in store retailers or online.
@@Harmonica123 Thanks for the quick reply, Ronnie ! I would do that, but now that I have begun to work on it myself, I think it is best to continue working on it -- now it is already better and no one could now see how it looked before I started.
That is sweet, perhaps I'll purchase B flat as I single note primarily in key of C as the f harp is so shrilly.. This excites me !!!! Thankyou Ron, gave me great insight here as I'm becoming active playing again... Really enjoy listening to your playing Sir...
Like the videos im a begginer with sp 20 rocket amp and golden melody all in c to start with videos have been helpful getting started working on some online classes soon 👍 😮😮😮😅
Okay, so first off, apart from the review, that was some spectacular playing! Also, I was surprised to hear that you never take apart a harmonica. I'd love to know more about that.
@@danlaxer514 I'm guessing since he's a Hohner endorser that he has extra harps sent to him from Hohner up the wazoo and so he never has any urgent need to do maintenance when problems arise since he can simply grab a brand new one fresh out of the box ready to go that he hasn't played yet.
@@danlaxer514 "not everyone likes to take apart their harps" Yes that's exactly my point. Why would he bother to take apart his harps when he as a Hohner endorser has loads of brand spanking new ones ready to go?
I used to like Golden Melodys until I bought one in G that was defective right out of the box. The one draw reed was severely damaged and made a horrible rattling noise when played. Since then I have stuck to Marine Bands (any variant thereof) which have never let me down. I also play Seydels of course because they're simply amazing (not to mention you can order them in equal temperament and have them custom tuned through their harp configurator)
@@sepultura7771 glad it's not just me. Hopefully that problem won't happen with these new Golden Melody's but I would rather not risk the money to find out!
When I started playing Marine Band harps (the 1950's) they cost exactly one dollar. As the years & decades went by, what seemed to hold true is that quality control never improved on harps even though the cost of them kept going up higher & higher. Basically you still have to by 6 harps of the same type in the same key to be sure you have one really good one.
Will have to try one. I find with the Seydels and Lee Oskar, that the melodies played in the lower register are a totally different beast to the upper register, like almost a different key and mode. Unfortunately my wooden comb Honer did not like the washing machine (left it in my pants before they got washed, bugger). Great review.
i learned in the 60's. i used to soak my Marine bands in water because it would loosen the tines a bit and make bending notes sound better. But the wood would expand so I had to use a razor blade to shave off the wood sticking out.
Nope, nada. Tip #1: keep your mouth clean, and your harps in a case and they will remain clean. Tip #2: if you're not skilled at working on your harmonicas, have a professional tune or fix them. Basically, I'm spoiled rotten. I think some skill under the hood would be good!
@@Harmonica123 Hey even with the cleanest of mouths the human/harmonica interface is a pretty funky environment. I have favorite harps that I will use so often it becomes necessary to do some housework now and then. Also re-tune. I’m surprised they didn’t hit the raised logo with white paint and maybe the ribs too for a pinstripe look, that would look retro.
