I was a hardware guy off and on since the late 80s, lost my way for a while and did everything in the box.. then being couped up in the house during the pandemic got me back into purchasing hardware and realizing how much more I like the sound of hardware over software, and also software sound quality of software improves while the CPU requirement goes up correspondingly and seems like a never ending spiral. You're great at covering the interesting stuff and making good use of the viewer's time. I think separating the channels is a smart move, btw.

Wow thanks for such kind words! And its the second golden age of synths now, so you are in luck. Finally, best advice for content is just start making it. Everyone sucks at first behind a camera.

@@devinbelangermusic - last month I purchased your patch sets for OB-6, OB8X, and 3rd Wave. My synth setup is a mix of modern and vintage models (over the last 42yrs I've gone from hopeful working musician, to content hobbyist)… the only other model that I'd likely buy patches for currently is the Prophet 5/10. I understand how to program synths, it's just with the time I allocate to playing/making music, I want to be playing and/or creating new musical ideas more so than sound design. Keep up the good work 🙂
@@Robert44444444 well you are in luck, I am getting a P10! just need to do a big spring sale of stuff to afford it haha. I love the Prophet sound and miss having one in my studio (Take 5 has to go home to my friend who lent it). Stay tuned!

I think you do excellent presentations on gear and I often really like the bits of music I hear you play to show us what the gear can do, so I will check out the music channel, I think I like your aesthetic quite a bit. I am nearly a non-musician and I put up tracks on UA-cam that I put together. I play a bit have curiosity and melodies and songs come to me that I try to play and sometimes I can get them down and finish them as songs, but thats it, I dont expect respect nor do I get any at all and get derided and nothing else than harsh criticism by musician friends and people I know who are very low level in the industry, but I dont care at all, I enjoy listening to my own music or even just the tracks I collage together with loops and samples. I think you could have a career in music if you are not careful, whether as producer, artists, sound track composition or teacher.
as a creative thinker too... I love the name Miles Away.. it caught my eye and ear for the past few years... I like the idea of Miles Away Music channel,,, but why not just call the other one Miles Away Gear... keep the Miles Away as the umbrella name for everything...
That was the original plan but after running it by several trusted mentors and industry peers they all suggested it’s too confusing and that the two avenues should have more differentiation.
@devin I did. I found out I am a natural frontman and my lateral quick conceptual thinking led to me being funny surreal and engaging. Like a whole new character. It was like that movie split but without the violence / horror 🤣 I just hated the attention off stage and would hide due to feeling all the feels suddenly! My issue is more one of "how the hell do I start again" and "how do I find what I want to do? ". I was part of the folk world but I love electronic music too
Hi Devin! How did I find out about you? Jim Daneker wasn't particularly happy with his 3rd wave at first until he saw one of your vids and gave the excellent instrument a second chance. Good luck with further projects!
I can't wait to hear more of what's in store for future 'Synth Jesus'. "And lo, he did take one synth and with his amazing reviews turned it into many synths and they did spread amongst the nerds with. Our mouths were hungry for GAS, and he turned the Behringer into Oberheim and we were satiated." Wait... not Synth Jesus? Dang. I mean 'Miles Away'.
Separating the gear/production and music into different channels is a good idea. Just subbed to the new channel. I first started following you from your Matriarch video because I was struggling with mine and typed it in the search bar. Been following you ever since. Btw, I’m neurodivergent myself, it can be a blessing and curse at the same time.
Thank you Wren, awesome to hear the Matriarch video helped you. :) thanks for sharing, fascinating how many musical people are neurodivergent. I have to say I got more confident to talk about it after Benn Jordan's excellent video
Back when I was about 9-10 years old, I had made a nightcore remix of your already remixed song by taylor swift. You had commented on that video too, I was so excited that day that a verified channel had commented on my video and I showed it to my friends and family. Now after the meme that blew up, I realized I've heard the name "Miles Away" somewhere before and logged back into this youtube account to check out if it was you who commented. Totally had no idea that you worked for NDL and Jidion, I'm a big fan of them. You've come so far since then, I remember you having just about maybe 500-5k subs? Insane!
Hi Devin. I support your decision and subscribe to both now. I intend to do the same at my place someday, because someone wants to listen to music only , and someone is interested in patch design. I first found your channel because of the Korg Prologue synthesizer. I was lucky enough to buy it, and although I wanted to sell it a few times because I'm a digital guy, but I hope I will have the good sense not to do that ))😀 And well I bought Minilogue XD 😊 I don't have tracks on my channel with it yet, but I really love creating sounds and hope to release a midi editor for them and a patch collection soon. Thank you sincerely for your videos, hugs to you ✨
Makes total sense! As a fellow hardware synth addict, it's the synth content that I follow you for. Best of luck and Happy New Year! =) *Just out of interest, are you a full-time UA-camr now, or do you still have another job?*

Not leaving YT! Just keeping this channel for synths, and the new channel for music only. Well said and thank you so much!! Love that quote, perfectly summed up
I think I have a more extreme version of your problem but I'm not too bothered about it. I started out with photography videos and only started making music content because I needed background music for those videos. I happened to mod my guitar and somehow people liked that so much that my music stuff took off. Now I have an audience that is pretty much split in the middle photography and music with the occasional random video in between that is completely different. My channel is just about all the creative stuff I make. Some of that is music, some of it is photography and that's fine, I guess? A lot of people nowadays are multitalented, especially people like you and me, so I'm actually targeting an audience that has many interests. The way I've positioned my channel is pretty much "I make random things too, this is about me and my creative journey." That's why every gear video I make always has creative process stuff in it and talks directly about my music or photography, because it's a way of getting what I make in front of all these people. The stuff that panders to the algorithm / search is actually totally secondary. Splitting what I do into different channels makes no sense for me because I didn't grow my audience on a wave of gear stuff. It's tempting to make content that maximises views, but most of the time I really don't care. With the way I'm working I know people subscribe for me and what I make, not to satisfy their retail therapy needs. It's ultimately a deeper connection and that's so important nowadays, especially for musicians who make very niche music like me. Basically, quality over quantity all the way, with everything, number of videos, views, subs. I don't mind if they stay low as long as I reach the right kind of people. It's the 1000 true fans approach rather than a million casual viewers / listeners who don't care, bandcamp + ko-fi instead of Spotify etc. Since you ask how I found you: I came through a gear video and subscribed, but I haven't listened to your music outside of what you demo. No surprises there because I'm mostly into really experimental music.
That’s fair, everyone has their own strategy that works for them. I have just found it confusing to work for my channel because although my music does include my gear I want it to focus more around my own vocals and songwriting and such with the cool production being the cherry on top.
@@devinbelangermusic Totally makes sense that you would run into contradictions there. Difficult to pivot once you've made your name with a specific type of content. That's why I always make my videos secondary. They will always focus on what I want to make anyway, rather than making extra content on stuff a specific audience wants to see. I'm sure content on songwriting or vocal production would work well too. I don't think I would have the time to split myself in half like that. I hope you find a way that works for you!
@@LillySchwartzI love that philosophy! Super happy it’s working for you Lilly and thanks for sharing your perspective. Best of luck on your artistic creator journey and thanks for supporting me 😃
@@devinbelangermusic We're all figuring it out as we go. I made some strategic choices along the way but I couldn't really predict that my music would become so important on my channel. I resisted it for a long time thinking I had to stick to my "niche" but ultimately I decided not to let some algorithm dictate how I focus my energies. It has really been worthwhile. Good luck to you too! I'm curious to see how you continue your journey from here!
I found out about your channel from a fortune telling robot, deep in the bowels of an abandoned silver mine, underneath a frozen lake on Mars. Has anyone seen my wife?
100%, you can look at the view count around my last remix ep release. Almost every video in that time period (songs or synth content) has lower than usual views and confused comments about “where’s the gear review” or “do you know Niko?” Etc. The algorithm shows videos to the wrong people when you post too much contrasting content.
100% click bait video dude. The thumbnail is literally titled "ITS OVER?" In all caps. A non click bait title would have been something like. "Changes to my channel content". Come on dude.
@@voodoohex72 i answered someone else, but the unfortunate truth of UA-cam is you have to have super clickable thumbnails. It’s icky but otherwise the algorithm literally shows your video to no one, and this is such an important message for me (my livelihood actually depends on it), so my compromise was a clickbaity thumbnail , but honest genuine video. In a perfect world I’d love for UA-cam to not be like that, but it is, and there’s data to show unfortunately
That’s another thing with UA-cam, you literally have to do eye grabbing thumbnails if you want any chance whatsoever of anyone clicking and hearing your authentic message. Mr. Beast style content’s impact on this platform has unfortunately made it an arms race for clicks. So I agree, sometimes my thumbnails are click-bait-y because they have to be (data doesn’t lie when I try other styles), but I always 100% guarantee my content won’t be click bait :) good critique though Stefan
This is my new channel for my artist project Miles Away, it will just be for releasing music and anything related to the artist project exclusively

You've never disappointed on your level of craftmanship and knowledge of the instruments, not to mention photography/video content. Thank you for inspiring me to play more music, even if it's just for me. I plan on eventually making content once I figure it out Hahaha
Wow thanks for such kind words! And its the second golden age of synths now, so you are in luck. Finally, best advice for content is just start making it. Everyone sucks at first behind a camera.
You are a rare Diamond 💎 Devin 👌 Incredibly Talented and a Beautiful Person too 😊 that is why so many people love you and what you do 💯 I think this is a Fantastic plan to separate the content you make and I know it will be supa successful 🎉 I cant wait to hear the new music you have in store for us 😃 reference when I first hear your music 🎶 🤔 it was the song 'One Sided' and I covered this on UA-cam and you so kindly commented on my 🥁 I was blown away 😅 and what a journey I have been on since then watching you grow and bless us with your Incredible Songs 🎶 👌and Educational/Demo Videos helping Artists all over the World 🌎
So looking forward to the new music 🎶 on the new channel and wishing you all the success in the world 🌎 that you so deserve 🙏🏼🤩🤩😻 🙌
Much love Jason, I truly appreciate your kind and thoughtful comments for many years now! I really love that you have stuck around since One Sided! That is still one of my favourite old EDM songs. I actually produce most of Mark Klaver's solo work, so while we won't be collabing on a Miles Away track again, go listen to his solo music if you want to hear my productions for him :)
@devinbelangermusic Absolute pleasure Devin 😊 huge fan and I truly love your music 🎶 and the demo videos 👌 I certainly will check more of your work with Mark 💯 and I'm so looking forward to Your new music 😃 have a fantastic week 🙏🏼🤩 🙌
Honestly appreciate you doing this. I can imagine it’s confusing for people and you. I love your music and gear reviews but the algorithm is harsh. Best to specialize and I’m now subscribed to both!
Thank you so much! Ya really needed to categorize the two lanes a bit better 🙌
Found you looking for synth videos, they're great. Music is sweet too. I subbed to the new channel, looking forward to the new music.
Thanks so much for checking out both, I really appreciate that 😊
Just subscribed! I am coming from the synth videos
Thank you so much for joining the journey!
Synth videos 🙋♂️ good luck with both channels 🙏
Thank you 🙌
Found you from looking for my first high-end poly synth as you shared perspectives on a number of synths I was interested in. Have purchased preset packs from you as well!
Thank you so much for the support! 🙏
Found you because of synth videos. I haven’t t heard your music. Best of luck
Thank you!
Keep on doing the thing Devin. Synth vids! Vancouver Island 🔥
Thanks so much for the support Zac!
Synth videos on this channel. Subbed to the new one. Good luck!
Best of both worlds 💪 Thank you!
Prologue/Summit etc comparison videos brought me to this channel. Sub’d to your new channel as well now. All the best with both channels in 2025 and beyond, Dev! (Shortening names is the Law in Australia …). PS - it’s still not too late to change your name to Miles (which can’t be shortened) by Deed Poll … … … 😜 Keep on creating, brother!
Appreciate all the support Keiren! I’m sure some will still call me Miles 😂
@. You should do a cover of Eminem’s “My Name Is”, with clip footage from the “They Still Call Me Bruce” movies … ☺️
"I found you from the synth review side of things, probably when I was GASing for the OB-6 a few years ago." - I love synths and cats.
Same.
This division sounds like a solid move, though I hope you do some unobtrusive cross-promotion. Cheers.
I’ll do a little bit for sure haha, but ya just wanted to separate the lanes to make it a little less confusing for you guys.
So excited for this! Subscribed!
@@Livguava thank you!
Makes sense, will be following both!
🙌
Hey Devin, I found you a couple of years ago when I decided to start my Synth Journey and was just looking for general info relating to synths. I subbed almost immediately to this channel and have subbed to your new channel, I mean why wouldn't I. Going forward I only ask one thing from this channel, keep it real, honest and never shill. Good luck going forward.
Thanks Andy! That's amazing that you have been around that long. I 100% have no time or interest shilling stuff. If something is a paid advertisement, I click the promo box (gotta pay the bills) and those are rare. Otherwise I only cover gear and topics here I truly love and am passionate about !
Great stuff, Devin - I know you from your synth videos
Cool, thanks for watching!
Viewer for the last couple of years or so of the hardware synth explorations and reviews (also a recent customer of some of your synth patch sets).
Appreciate your continued support! What synths would you want me to make patches for next? I’ve got a long queue right now 😂
@@devinbelangermusic - last month I purchased your patch sets for OB-6, OB8X, and 3rd Wave.
Stay tuned!
Been a fan since September when I bought my first synth: A TEO-5. Still trying to figure out how I get the patches I purchased into the synth / Ableton 12.
funny to me thying, but, i saw the thumbnail and was like 'why is this on my list?' don't think I'd seen you with your hair down lol. Anyway, i think i got here you talking about the synths, but i checked and I added all your music already so subscribed to the new channel.
Right on! Thanks for clicking anyway and for supporting both channels 😅
Nice one buddy. Fellow ADHDer here. I'm in that rut myself having left a decent successful but local band and no idea where to go next
It's a struggle but if you can make use of it in the right way, it becomes a huge asset.
@devin I did. I found out I am a natural frontman and my lateral quick conceptual thinking led to me being funny surreal and engaging. Like a whole new character. It was like that movie split but without the violence / horror 🤣
I just hated the attention off stage and would hide due to feeling all the feels suddenly!
My issue is more one of "how the hell do I start again" and "how do I find what I want to do? ". I was part of the folk world but I love electronic music too
so excited of you!
Thank you!
Fan from the synth vids. Subscribed to the mew channel, Devin.
Thanks friend!
Good idea, can’t wait to see where you go 🎉
Thank you!
Hi Devin! How did I find out about you?
Jim Daneker wasn't particularly happy with his 3rd wave at first until he saw one of your vids and gave the excellent instrument a second chance. Good luck with further projects!
Thank you so much Gerald! Appreciate your support
I can't wait to hear more of what's in store for future 'Synth Jesus'. "And lo, he did take one synth and with his amazing reviews turned it into many synths and they did spread amongst the nerds with. Our mouths were hungry for GAS, and he turned the Behringer into Oberheim and we were satiated."
Wait... not Synth Jesus?
Dang.
I mean 'Miles Away'.
@@LAZ-org 😂 synth Jesus is amazing, turning Behringer into Oberheim had me chuckle hard lol
I love you man!
Back at you bro 💙
Insane!
Wow! That’s incredible, I love that you remembered that. Time flies, that remix was from so long ago - thank you for the support all these years :)
fastest subscribe of my life!!
Appreciate you 💙
I know you from your synth videos. Have a studio myself, which includes a Korg Prologue.
Right on! Prologue is so good!
Thank you sincerely for your videos, hugs to you ✨
Right on! Thanks for supporting! I actually just got a Minilogue XD temporarily in the studio and will be doing a video/patch set. Great synth.
@@devinbelangermusicGreat👍 I'll send a link when it's completely ready. I'm testing it now
Makes total sense! As a fellow hardware synth addict, it's the synth content that I follow you for. Best of luck and Happy New Year! =) *Just out of interest, are you a full-time UA-camr now, or do you still have another job?*
@@atomicasounds thanks for watching :) most of my music income actually comes from streaming royalties, I’m lucky there. UA-cam is growing but not enough to live on yet. I’m a workaholic though and do extra contract jobs too to keep things stable.
@@devinbelangermusic Many thanks for the insight! =)
at least you’re not leaving EDM, right? i remember you were saying that. anyway ive been listening to your music since 2018 i guess, let’s see what’s next
I’ve gone in a more indie electronic direction for my new stuff. Not as traditional EDM as before. You can see on my new channel next week!
@ so i’ll miss your future bass drops with 10+ synth layers 😭 some songs are my all-time favourite songs
@@v11ctr the new ep has some really cool throwbacks to that too, I think you will like it, just wait and see. It’s an evolution of my sound, not throwing it away :)
Are you leaving YT?
A famous person once said *The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves*
That hair bro!!!
GL with your new channel, subbed and HNY!!!
Not leaving YT! Just keeping this channel for synths, and the new channel for music only.
Well said and thank you so much!! Love that quote, perfectly summed up
@@devinbelangermusic Yeah the leaving part was tongue n cheek as was the T2 quote lol.
Keep on keeping on!!!
@@DankePlace I need to rewatch T2 apparently , I thought you made that quote 😂
Which is the channel with no man bun?✌️😸
J/K!
Synth stuff
right on! tons more of that coming here on this channel then
I think I have a more extreme version of your problem but I'm not too bothered about it.
Wow, i did not know you were from Quebec (judging from your last name). Are you based in mtl?
Vancouver! But if you go back far enough my extended family is quebecois. I grew up speaking both languages
Synth videos
I found out about your channel from a fortune telling robot, deep in the bowels of an abandoned silver mine, underneath a frozen lake on Mars. Has anyone seen my wife?
@@TommyLoaded lmao
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣 I really thought your first and last name was Miles Away
You aren’t the only one! Some of the companies I work will still do even though my email says Devin 😂
Québécois ?
No Vancouver actually haha
Ummm... OK. 🤷♂ Are you SURE you have peeps who are confused by your previous channel config? Cuz, that seems real unlikely. Good luck, though.
100%, you can look at the view count around my last remix ep release. Almost every video in that time period (songs or synth content) has lower than usual views and confused comments about “where’s the gear review” or “do you know Niko?” Etc. The algorithm shows videos to the wrong people when you post too much contrasting content.
Make sure your face is on the thumbnail of every video, because otherwise we might not recognize your video's.
Great tip , thank you! Gonna do this
100% click bait video dude.
I can't except your name isn't Miles
@@1dale1dale 🤣
Sorry, but the video title IS clickbait. The video itself, in contrast, makes total sense, which then is different from how clickbait works.
That’s another thing with UA-cam, you literally have to do eye grabbing thumbnails if you want any chance whatsoever of anyone clicking and hearing your authentic message. Mr. Beast style content’s impact on this platform has unfortunately made it an arms race for clicks. So I agree, sometimes my thumbnails are click-bait-y because they have to be (data doesn’t lie when I try other styles), but I always 100% guarantee my content won’t be click bait :) good critique though Stefan
whenever i hear the names “Devin(Devon)” or “Miles”, i think of Knight Rider.
Fair haha
