It's been quite a while since I thought about what it was like learning how the Spyder handled when I first got it. It was like learning to ride all over again. The derrier "pucker up" moments when it felt like the Spyder might tip over or try to toss you off going around the curves. 😳😵😵💫 But that learning period was a lot of fun. It made you pay more attention again. It takes a bit to gain the confidence that the Spyder won't tip, and learning how to maneuver your body position and your arm position on the grips does get a lot easier the more you ride. Getting used to the steering reaction of the Spyder also takes time, and then soon enough, confident handling and control of the Spyder will come. Excellent overview in this video 👊😁👍
I still work part time, commuting those three days (regardless of weather) on my Spyder. Half of the ride is four lane, but the other half is a twisty hilly two lane which is used a lot by big construction trucks. My morning ride is in the dark. I go slower there so as not to outrun what I can see. The road has many blind twisty curves with ruts and crowns from the big dump and cement rigs. It always test my steering skills. All your commentary on this video are spot on.
Thanks for all of these informative videos. You are teaching me how to ride my (new to me) Spyder RTL. I have been riding motorcycles for 50+ years but can't hold up a big bike at my advanced age. Bought a used, low mileage 2018 RT and started struggling with it. Your videos have really helped me sort it out and every time I go out for practice it feels better.
Good points to remember CB3. Since my snow has finally melted and the ice is gone I pulled the Spyder out last night to get ryding. This is a good refresher!
When I picked up my spyder and got on the interstate 8 miles from the dealer I seriously doubted my riding ability's, I was like a drunk and came as close to wrecking as one will ever come but as you said practice practice practice./ the best way to describe the roads in northerner Maine is just look at pictures of old 2 person wood saws, when they built those roads they just flushed cut the trees and paved over the tree stumps I spent a good 40 years riding/driving all over Maine. Wicked awesome video.
2237. Well Coach Bob I want to thank you for putting together a very informative video. I have been riding for 40+ years. Started with a Yamaha 360, moved to a Suzuki GS850 then my daughter came along and I put it away for 16 years. She wanted to ride so got it back on the road, got her a Ninja 250 and we rode till she left for college. I moved to a Honda 1100 Shadow aero and then in 2008 to a Honda Goldwing I just retired this summer and sorry to say have only been out once riding. Have issues seeing in the shadows as in the video, but it’s a feeling that I am not as secure as I want to be and with my wife on the back, no Anyway have started looking at the Sea to Sky and before I walk into the dealership I want to have an over abundance of knowledge. In general we ride the backroads of NH. 40-50 mph is where we like it. So my question is, yes there is a question, the speed you enter a turn, the radius of the turn, crown, inside, outside….with all that taken into consideration…. is picking up the inside wheel a real concern Thanks. OtRider02
Thanks for the great tips. My wife just bought a spyder a few days ago. Despite taking the endorsement class there is still a lot to learn, and not as many people are knowledgeable to teach 3 wheels as 2
Great video Coach! I found looking through the turn on the Spyder helped the most. Even more than on my 2 wheeler. Light touch is a must, and let the bike find its happy place. I don’t correct every little thing. Ride safe!
Great tips as always Coach Bob! Not holding the grips too tight was a learning process for me, but the more you ride the more it becomes second nature.
Thanks Coach Bob! I recently switched to a Spyder. Your video on handling has helped me so much. My ride home from purchasing was scary, I was afraid I had made a expensive mistake. After watching your video I have gained confidence and I am enjoying riding it Thanks !!!
Great instructional video…….will be rewatching for certain. New Spyder rider here - just a couple of weeks in. Gave up 2 wheels some time ago. Thanks for the tips!
Hey Coach Bob!! I had a 2015 RT Limited with push button adjustable suspension on the rear. I’ve always been in tune with all of my vehicles and could “feel” how they were functioning and performing. With the Spyder, I noticed the steering felt more responsive and it felt as if it had more of a suspension roll when the rear suspension was at its fullest setting. Conversely, when the suspension was set at its lowest setting, it seemed to want to hug the road a little better. I know it has a lot to do with the angle of “caster” on the front wheels when you adjust the suspension. Just another thing for all the listeners to know about. Have a great day!!
Hi CoachBob i am from Montréal Québec canada i watch your video about how to drive the spyder i got last monday a rt limited 2022 and with the how to drive a spyder video i am having so much fun so i do thing the good way thank’s for your video and i keep following you her
After not riding a 2 wheel for several years, when I bought the Spyder a year ago I adapted to the steering feel right away. It steers itself if you let it. Learning to straddle road debris took some practice. I practiced putting the debris on line with one of my feet or going around it.
Another great video. I always learn something from watching your videos. I have a million questions about getting a Spyder RT. It has been a few years since I have rode a 2 wheel bike. I am looking forward to riding again. Tell Coach Vic hi.
I lean but my friend that has the same Spyder RTL that I have does not. It just seams natural to me. Looking through the turn instead of down at the road really helps. I have not been thinking about my elbows but I will the next time I ride.
Coach Bob, you mentioned that you can push or pull when steering. you mentioned that you push..thats your process. I noticed in a separate video when you were wearing a Tee shirt, that you were pulling. I say this due to your biceps tensing as your arm pulls. This was more with higher speed curve rather than turns, With that said.... let me say this was my impression and let me ask if you use both a push and pull based on if you are maneuvering a curve or turning? After 50 years of riding motorcycles with 2 wheels, Im still working on my turning and general control of my Spyder RTL. Your comments are appreciated and I live your videos. Great Job.
Based on my body position and the circumstances there are times that I do pull. I just try not to push/pull at the same time. In most of my higher speed turns I am moving my body "inboard" off of the seat. This often extends my "push arm" so far out that it is just present on the handlebar (stabilizing my body). Hopefully that helps.
Not a good spyder steerer here. Went on demo ride and had problem getting bike to turn. Would turn bars but spyder felt like it wanted to go straight. So unnerving. Cool looking and one of my neighbors has one.
@@CoachBob3 The narrowness is something we are used to. I’m getting a Spyder when I retire in three years so at the moment it’s homework and learning so I’ll be well prepared when I storm off into the hills and lanes or our green bits!
my advice to my new riders is to lighten up loose grip or ride one handed. If you have trouble you are trying to hard just lighten up Francis. These sport trikes are great on all road surfaces especially gravel. I ride everywhere and many places my two wheel goldwing would not go.
Coach Bob, I keep hearing about people who install aftermarket sway bars. After watching this video, I wonder if you feel it is worth the upgrade and why would I want my F3-T to have them?
I haven't felt it necessary to upgrade. I am sure that the aftermarket suspension (Baja Ron) would be much better. But, for my type of riding, I have been very pleased with the stock setup.
Coach, love your videos. As a matter of fact, they were a big reason I purchased a 2022 Spyder RT last month. I have a question regarding the steering. How do you negotiate tighter turns? It feels like it wants to throw me off the opposite side of the bike. Is it something you just have to get used to?
You do get more used to it. I lean my body into the turn which shifts my weight to the inside making me feel less vulnerable and helps counterbalance the Spyder. Great question.
Hello coachBob3 looks like you don't do much replying to people that are responding to your videos anyhow I'm just wondering if you could respond to this. I'm wondering if you could send the link or describe what kind of audio system you're using in your helmet, it really sounds good we're using a GoPro 10 and I already owe sound doesn't quite sound as clear as your setup thank you Mario CanAmCruising ✌️

It is on a ram ball mount for the Zumo XT.. The ball is screwed into a Spyder Cuff made by Lamonster Garage. It has been rock solid. I will be making a video ion that and my phone mount very soon.
Hey Coach, my wife asked asked what the 3 on CB3 represents? Three wheels? Three motorcycles? Just wondering. BTW, I’m enjoying watching your videos, fairly new subscriber here.

You glide a Spyder on the open highway. Want to correct left put a slight pressure forward on the right side handlebar.
I live in Louisiana and that is first thing I noticed that about a spider
Roads are huge, even the lanes! Not like ours in the UK!
When I watch videos from the UK I am always shocked at how narrow your roads are. I bet that gets pretty "interesting" at times. Thanks for watching.

I agree... they have a poor GPS presentation through he BRP Connect app. But ... it needs a ton of work.
