I never thought that I would own a three wheel. I have ridden two wheels over 50 years and taught motorcycle safety for over 35 years. I have not been a three wheel bike rider. I now have two Can Am Spyder’s. One for me and one for my wife. I am an old fart and my knees do not work well. I studied the different three wheel combination available and decided that Can Am is the safest and most fun to ride. My wife wanted my first Can Am so I went got one for me. Now we ride together. It is great.

I've had my 883L Harley since '07 when they first came out. A Suzuki 650 before that. After my husband died; riding my Sportster wasn't the same without him. I'm short, just 5' and I lost my confidence handling the Sporty in the garage and navigating our difficult driveway as I tippy-toed it waiting to pull out at the bottom of a blind curve. My left hand had been damaged from years of clutching. I became depressed loosing my husband and the passion of riding that we shared. Then in 2020 I bought my F3 Basic. It saved my life. All my concerns and anxiety about dropping the bike, clutching fatigue, chrome maintence, road conditions, and low speed manuvering vanished in that one bike. We have always been Harley people, but now I'm doing things my way. My Spyders license plate says "YBNRML" ... " Why Be Normal" 😂 Not all the Harley riders wave at me: but I don't care .... I'm retired, widowed, and out there still riding, thanks to my beautiful black Spyder😎🕷🕸

Having a true reverse gear; and not have to put feet down to balance at stops or worrying about road surfaces or slant in parking lots are real pluses…

I’ve been watching your videos since before your California trip. You inspired me to get a 2020 can am spyder RTL and I never looked back. I’ve toured over 27000 miles all over this beautiful country. I’m 66 years old and have a lot more trips planned on this great machine. My heart sings every time I ride this machine. Thanks Bob 😊

A couple more reasons: 1. Anyone can learn to ride a Spyder - young or old, and also those who have never ridden a motorcycle.
    2. With a handbrake accessory, the Spyder provides an opptunity for paraplegics & amputees to enjoy motorcycle riding.
Awesome video Coach Bob, BRP will sell a few more Spyders thanks to this video 😁👍👍

You're 100% correct on the handling abilities of the Spyder. There were a couple of instances where I tried to keep up with a Spyder on a back road while riding a Harley Freewheeler. I failed, miserably, both times. Having only one tire up front really limits the fun you can have on curvy roads. If performance on three wheels matters at all to you, buy a Can-Am. Simple as that!

steel grated surface bridges can be really challenging. the squirming of the back tire can be distracting to new riders.
one reason that explicitly be said is that extends the riding of Older folks who had to give up two wheels. Also it gives access to people with injuries or handicaps who can't ride two wheel.

  • @paulhess2715
    @paulhess2715 Рік тому +4

Another reason is ease of ride for handicapped individuals. I am 52 years old and I've been diagnosed with Parkingson. My left side is slow and week and balance is off. My wife and I purchased a used 2020 Spyder Rt and we fell in love with it. The bike has helped with hand coordination and keeps me active. Thank you for all your content it is always high quality information.

Good Morning Coach Bob. I live in Canada where our riding time is much shorter than south. I just wrote off my 2019 Harley Davidson CVO and was looking at a new CVO anniversary edition. With our short riding season the cost is totally crazy. In Canadian funds I is it at $69,500.00 . So am looking at a Can-Am Spider and I love this 10 point Video.

9 cruisers, 1 touring bike, now one of these. My wife and I always ride together and we've been to all 48 contiguous states, some many times. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 155k miles all told. At 68 I needed a break. These may not lean but they hug the twists and sweeps so much more securely than two wheels it's hard to describe. We can push some serious G's on our Spyder RT Limited. I wish we'd made the switch years ago. Keep up the great work on these videos. God bless.

I have been riding for many years but an accident that damaged nerves in my back (not motorcycle related) has resulted in neuropathy, causing me to lose strength in my legs. I don't feel safe riding a big bike, because I don't have the strength to hold it up. I have read review after review and watched many videos on 3-wheel bikes. The Can-Am Spyder has the look and appears to have the feeling that I am looking for. The wife loves riding the bi.... back seat, yeah back seat. I have watched many of your videos and it has really helped me to make up my mind. I am 99% sure at this point I will go with the Can-Am Spyder Limited. I have a lot of my friends laugh when I tell them I am going 3-wheels, I think they will change their minds. Thank you for your videos. I just wanted to add I am 54 and now at the point where I can ride pretty much anytime I want.

The Spyder was initially my wife’s idea! I had a Honda VTX which I absolutely loved, it had given me 6 years of faithful service without hiccups, it owed me nothing, I loved the Handling, smooth ride, performance. But it was a very uncomfortable ride for the wifey, she was miserable! Friends of ours rode a Spyder and loved it . Wife suggested we get a Spyder, My knee jerk reaction was “I don’t want to get rid of my MC! She said “you don’t have to get rid of your bike we’ll just get a Spyder too! Well that took the argument out of the equation. We’ve had the Spyder 3 1/2 years, last year I put 200 miles on the Honda, I hate to admit that I have come to love the Spyder , it’s a technology advanced machine , handles well. At this point in my life I’m all about comfort !5 months ago sold the Honda, it was time to turn it over to someone who would love it also! The Spyder is a member of the family!

Been riding for about 30 years, a two wheel machines. I hive in rural south tx so all of them worked for thier living.(bet not many have used a BMW r75/6 to herd cattle for example). Just got a f3s and love it but my first mod WILL be a windshield. The thing is absolutely wonderful on the back roads, almost no pucker factor with rocks and gravel and rough roads don't disturb it at all.

I've been afraid of motorcycles ever since I almost died as a passenger, when the driver lost control on some gravel on the highway going 100 mph. Fastforward 45 years, I was riding an ATV on some mountains in Utah and I tell you what, that was so much fun. I think that riding a Spyder would be a very similar experience. I'm 63 now and seriously considering buying one. Love your channel, so informative. Thanks coach!

    Greetings Coach Bob >>>
    Fantastic video as usual !
My wife has a 2015 Can-Am Spyder F3-S, which we have ridden 2-up on several 1,500 to 2,500 mile tours in the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain States in the last view years . I have a 2019 Yamaha Super Tenere ES, which we have taken on shorter 2-up tours . We are both 71 years old and believe me, the tours on my wife's Spyder are way more comfortable, less intense and much less tiring ! We take the Yamaha when dirt, gravel roads and off-road tracks are involved . Thanks again for your very informative and real world 🌍 information !
Take care & be well !

I would say the #1 reason for anyone thinking about getting a spyder is that it is very forgiving. If you are new to riding or elderly it's forgiving of a great amount of skill required of a two wheel. If scared it's forgiving of possible low side accidents. And for most handicaps or permanent injuries it is forgiving and allows you to ride. No two wheeled vehicle that I know of can accommodate for lower skill, fear and physical restrictions.

Doubt I would want to look at an aftermarket seat because I am so comfortable on the stock one and the floorboard space gives me the room to move my legs enough to alleviate the cramps I sometimes got in my right leg (try stopping with a cramped RIGHT leg)

@CoachBob3 my 2022 RT-l has 47 gallons of storage. next year i have two very long trips to choose from Ohio or Iowa i'll be doing solo (ugh). quality gear is a must especially rain gear. suspension, mine is auto adjusting and when to took my trip up to cedar key with minimal gear i notice no change in ride or when i have my wife out for a ride out for several hours i notice no change in ride, what i do notice is the compressor run when she first get on the trike but after that nope nothing, the auto suspension is wicked awesome. i find that braking is far superior to my former bike that being a HD road-glide this can am stops fast and hard enough to lift my 263 pound body up in the seat.... looking forward till we meet again.

Can't imagine why some people are hatters. My second motorcycle is an fjr 1300. I'll tell you I enjoy that bike more than most bikes I've ever owned. I bought my touring bike so my wife will ride with me other than that I will take the fjr everytime.

Awesome video. I have been pipe dreaming about Can Am bikes for many many years. I want the safety of a wide based enclosed road vehicle with the freedom of an open road bike. As a health care worker in Radiology/ emergency medicine witnessing many upon motorcycle accidents I had to take a step back. I feel like the can am frame is much more safer and is perfect to thwart being victims of those who don’t see conventional riders and are often the reason for accidents, often not caused by the bike riders. Sure I get the jokes from all my Harley riding buddies, but my safety and freedom of the road dissolves all the hype of a 2 wheeler. I got 2 years until retirement, and I am certain Can Am will be in my wheelhouse. Thanks for sharing.

Our bike has like 5 suspension settings. Changing it is easy as heck, you can even do it while you are moving. We can adjust it well enough for solo canyon carving, two up touring, or ya know. Whatever. If the road gets bumpy and we are bouncing along, no problem, just flip a switch and job done. Love my Spyd. It's f'in solid!! #RealRider

I didn’t want the Harley Triglide because it doesn’t have that sport feeling. I found a deal on a 2011 Can Am RS S and I’m just stoked!!!

Thanks for that video Coach Bob. The only thing that holds me back from buying one is the dealer network, parts availability, and a general malaise with the entire non-riding part of ownership. 🧐🧐

I'm looking in the Can Am direction as honestly, I have been riding a straight axle Victory Crossbow trike and it looks great and it's awesome on nice roads but simply awful on bad roads and as I get older it isn't getting any better! Kind of tired of getting beat up when you just want to try and enjoy a nice ride. And the head shake on a normal straight axle trike when you hit a bump is hard on your shoulders and makes me want to look in the direction of a Can-Am Spyder......

Ok,here;s the deal. I've been an MC tech for many years. I've had the priviledge of riding 100's of different kinds/brands of bikes. For many years I swore I would just quit riding before I needed a 3 wheeler. This was in part due to me getting to ride more than a few Goldwing conversions and HD conversions. Traditional(2 wheels in the back) trikes are horrible. They do not handle at all.
I rode an early Spyder and liked it but it had a few issues I didn't like. They have since addressed these. I have a friend who bought a Ryker, let me have it for 4 days while he took a trip.I have never looked back. I now own a Ryker Sport and love it. I have no problem doing 600 mile days. I am now 61 years old.I still have, and love,my Guzzi V9 Bobber. But when I travel,NC to FLA is common,It's the Ryker all the way. I have done some common mods to make better suited to travel. I grew up way up north and rode snowmobiles for many years. Yes,the Ryker(but not the Spyder) really is like a snowmobile with wheels(hell,it's got a snowmobile engine and CVT in it) but that's one of the reasons I like it.I hear the negative comments as well but I tell people to ride one before they judge. Thank you for the great channel.

Great video - you have pace down pat.
I must admit I always thought CanAms were silly and only for people who could not figure out how to ride a "proper bike." Now that I am looking 70 years old square in the face combined with health issues, I am pretty much certain of I am going to join the club next riding season.

I would like to add. I rode a sidecar for years and I see the canam as having some similarities in body movement though not handling. A sidecar front wheel requires reverse steering dependant upon how many wheels are on the ground when manoeuvring. I don’t think that a canam has a propensity to lift, rather slide when on an even surface. I am currently considering buying a trike and being 65 I’m leaning towards the canam for the creature comforts.

    • @CoachBob3
      @CoachBob3  8 місяців тому

It does have the side car feel, but, without the fear of "lift". The handling is also far superior on the "reverse trike" design. It feels very planted. I have ridden my entire life and was very reluctant about getting a Spyder. I have really enjoyed the experience. Let me know how things go on your "Spyder Quest".

I got my motorcycle endorsement in 2016. I then bought a Tri-Glide. Had to sell it in 2018 for a job related move to the UK. I'm back in the USA now and I plan to buy either a Spyder or another Tri-Glide in spring of 2024.
I ride what I like. I don't ride so you'll think I'm cool. I don't need any excuses to ride a three-wheeler. I don't need to explain myself to anyone. If you want to make fun of me and my ride, feel free. I heard plenty disparaging remarks when I owned my Trike. It got old, but I tried my best not to let it bother me. ☺

I have been riding for 56 years, summer of 1967. I started with a Honda 55, yes 55. I have a BMW R1150RT, I love that bike, with age and a bad heart I can't hold it up any more, the last I tried to ride it I dropped it and now I fear getting back on it. Dammit I miss riding almost as much as I miss being young. This looks like it would work, not counter steering would drive me nuts.

I've had a Yamaha VT1300 and a Harley Davidson Fat Boy. The VT was extremely comfortable and reliable. The Harley was fun for the ego, especially in the south, but I had back surgery in 2019 so the rough ride of the fat boy isn't sustainable anymore. The Can-am's are on my radar right now, but I am wondering about the comfort on these things.

I rode a Softail for 18 years. I loved that cool feeling the HD gave me. As I have aged ...I have certainly changed...more body pain, more desire to slow down and simply enjoy life. The comfort accompanied with the ability to tour with my wife has made the Spyder a perfect fit for me.
Myself, a 60+ year old fella.. I can easily do 500-600 miles a day without feeling totally wiped out. The comfort is 5 stars. 👍👍👍

I rode motorcycles..for distances...since high school. I am 70. My first summer out of high school, I went on an 1100 mile trip on my Honda 350. My current bike has 109,000 miles. I wanted to love the Spyder but hated the way I felt in the turns. It felt like it wanted to throw me off the bike. My brother in law "triked" his Harley and felt the same way. I spoke with a Spyder owner who previously rode a GW like I have. He said that you get "used" to it. Not sure why you would want to???

Coach Bob, I currently have a custom made trike motor is 2.5L fuel injection with a VW 3 speed automatic transmission my concern is what happens when and if it breaks so I debating about buying another trike Honda trike, Can Am, even thinking about a Rewaco only problem with Rewaco is who can fix it. Leaning towards a Can Am so, I'm always looking other comments on the internet maybe next. I'm planning in 2024 participate in Run For Wall from Flagstaff AZ to Arlington VA for Memorial Day. I really enjoy your videos. Enjoy the road and stay safe.

I am in the learning stage when it comes to the Can Am. I see a number of negative comments but equally I see plenty of positive one's. I am curious as to which model of Can Am you ride as I like the idea of heated grips especially out riding in the UK where it rains alit and can be quite cold. I enjoyed your video and would like to see more before I take the plunge. Thanks Mike 😎👍

    • @CoachBob3

The entire RT Spyder line and the touring level F3 Spyder will have the heated grips for sure. I believe it is an option all the way around the. The RT limited and the RT Sea to sky both have heated seats as well.
Mine has been quite dependable. I have some friends whose largest problem has been parts acquisition when things go wrong (here in the states, I have had the same problem with European bikes). I will always have a Spyder (and a Triumph or two)...the Spyder has been a joy to own and ride. I appreciate ya watching and commenting.

The ONLY reason I don't yet have a Can Am Spyder is the price. I've owned/ridden 2 wheel motorcycles for 50+ years. My last bike was a 530lb 1987 Honda Super Magna and while it was quite fun for short rides, road trips would leave me with a sore butt. I went on a group ride with a bunch of other Super Magna owners and we ended up going on a 149 mile ride for lunch. I was on that bike for 9 hours that day and could barely walk at the end of it. I even skipped the following days ride because of it. I ended up selling it but not for that reason. Where I live now, it rains A LOT and riding that particular bike in the rain was not a fun experience.
The most appealing aspects of the spyder in my opinion are, 2 wheels up front for stability, the semi-auto transmission and of course, the storage capacity.
