Hey guys! Love the video! I’m definitely up to see a update for 2023 prices. I’m coming to Bermuda for a week later this year and I’m staying in an Air bnb. How much on average does the weekly food shop cost now in 2023?
@@danieldoyle2080 Hey Daniel, you might be interested in this ua-cam.com/video/HzDvsMl0090/v-deo.html and i'll be updating the site in a few days for 2023. Thanks for watching!
I moved to the UK from Bermuda and never looked back. Once I brought some buddies of mine from London to the island just to show them around and they were in disbelief the whole time at how expensive everything was!
@@QiuLin-f9r Yes, combined with the fact that we have to import pretty much everything that isn't onions and rum. Bermuda barely generates any of its own food!
Just found your channel so checking some of your videos. Will be visiting Bermuda in 3 weeks and its truly my happy place. Question on groceries...do residents grow their own fruits and vegetables?
Hi! Welcome aboard! Some people do but land is expensive here so most just don’t have the space. Some vertical farming solutions are trying to fill the gap but it’s a very big gap
Not *really* . Some people do grow things (my mom for example) but as Omar stated there isn't a lot of land space available. There are some local farms that do markets on a weekly basis though. Windy bank, westover and wadson's farm are a few examples.
😱😱😱...good video! If I'm not wrong, most food items have a custom duty of 0% to 5% (see food and sauces have a slightly higher one). I guess that every Bermudian who flies back to the island brings a few suitcases of non-perishable food. Right? I can understand that the prices are higher because virtually everything is imported, especially fresh food which I guess comes by plane. However, considering the limited customs duty and that there is no VAT...I wonder if there are other reasons? I suspect that supermarkets have little incentive to compete with each other in a place where alternatives are limited. Thanks to your friend and yourself for this new video! 😉
Thanks! I always appreciate your comments! You are right, there are obvious reasons like duty and shipping and some not-so-obvious ones. There’s no VAT but we have different taxes like fcpt that also add to it. I’m hoping to do a big video on it later this year! Thanks for watching
Yeah man, since I started going there in 1998, I’ve been shocked at gas and food prices, but native bermudians seem to just pay it without comment! Thanks for this!
yeah. i love to speak on these issues but most people just accept it. I can't blame them, really. The reality of island life means that real honest change is very difficult to come by. Thanks for watching!
Year round is tough but during the summer months there are several farmers markets you can check. Like windybank farm, for example. Otherwise you’ll need to check the higher end grocery stores like Miles Market
I get it...but the things that are expensive are pre-prepared food. Really all that stuff is crap. You could buy dried chickpeas cheaper than cans of chickpeas....you could grow your own strawberries...you have the perfect climate for growing your own fruit and veg. All those weird snacks are always going to be expensive on an island in the middle of the Atlantic. If I lived on Bermuda I would eat locally caught fish, rice, home grown veg and salad. Bermuda is my secret fantasy home...I dream of living there...but it always strikes me that a simple diet is the way to go, with home grown greens and fruit. I would be happy eating spicy fish and rice every day. I don't need chocolate biscuits or expensive pre-prepared salad dressing...olive oil, white wine vinegar, dijon mustard and seasoning! I lived in Cannes, France for a while....mental prices....$15 for four nectarines. You just learn to avoid things that are expensive in favour of locally sourced items...
Hate to break it to you but it’s a 21 mile island with over 60k people. If you ain’t a wealthy, good luck with that home garden lol. Weather might be perfect, but farmable land is tougher to come by
As as swiss person, these prices seem quite reasonable! jk. Switzerland is also expensive af, but grocery prices here are ok-ish and if we want to we can do our grocery shipping in germany, france or italy and get a refund from the difference in VAT (Switzerland is 7.7% and Germany is 19%, so you get back 11.3%). Also there are famous german discounter brands like aldi and lidl here which are good for the competition (and hence for the prices the consumers pay :)). Before aldi and lidl opened stores in Switzerland however, prices also really high - almost like the ones you show in this video.
Nice insight! I always see switzerland high on the cost of living index with Bermuda but, like you said, must be nice to have the option to cross the border lol. Either way, thanks for stopping by!
Inlive in Saskatoon, SK Canada. That dame roasted chicken is between $12-$15cdn aka $8.76-$10.96 bmd. I have a potential job opportunity in Burmuda. The wage is $41 usd with either free housing onsite or $800 for hkusing off site. Is that a good deal?
I’m potentially moving to Bermuda soon for work. The wage is $85k … I don’t mind frozen … I assume that’s better value? I notice you have Waitrose items … That’s THE most expensive supermarket in the UK. I’m easy when it comes to food, chicken/steak/fish rice … Will I be poor? 🤣
85 gross or net? Bringing your fam? Hard to say without more details but surface level you’d be ok. Hit me up on the isleofdevils.com or on social media if you wanna talk more
Shop wholesale. I NEVER buy meat from the grocery store. Go to either Pricerite (its pretty much Bermuda's version of costco, no membership required, lots of bulk items), or there is a small place in St. Davids called E&R Fisheries that has pretty good prices on frozen meat (best price for steaks I have found on the island, $16/lb for new york strip).
Hey Omar, go check out my cousin Malcolm Smith at Windy Banks Farms farm market....tell him I sent you I'm part of the Outerbridge family from The Wilderness Farm but I live here in Hawaii. Was there for America's Cup You're the only Bermuda vlog that I can keep up on the local goings-on. I'll make a video of me watching you guys at Windy Banks Farms from Hawaii.... Aloha Brhaddha
@@OmarJames oh 400 dollars is too expensive but i guest your salary per month would be 6-10k so I think the price is reasonable. High price cost of living but has a high salary.
Better to consume more fat and protein (animal sources) to keep you fuller longer. Rice is good most definitely because of the price, but you want to limit carb intake if you can help it.
Mr. Omar, thank you for your warm words. My question is if the island accepts refugees. Would you encourage me as a Syrian to travel to the island and seek for asylum if I could get there somehow?
Good question...so many refugees are coming to the UK that it is now a foul overcrowded and stinking island. I myself am currently planning to seek asylum in the British Virgin Islands. I have everything in place to seek asylum there....I have paid £17,500 to be trafficked there...I expect they will give me accommodation and living allowance. Once there I shall use my savings to open a business.
