    Omar, I’m an American, but I lived in Bermuda from 2012, to 2017. And you were right in my neighborhood. I shopped at Shelly Bay Market Place many, many, many times. I can still remember being shocked at the prices, the very first time I went in there!! After my first experience shopping there, I said that I would never again complain about the food prices in our grocery stores over here! Which I often did! I also recognized some of those points along The Railway Trail that you were on. And yes indeed. Bermuda is a beautiful island, with beautiful people!

      Omar I am an American living in Bermuda since 1998.. you should explain that everything is imported.. hence the higher prices! 🤗🤗

      @@yahspeaks9125 i'm definitely planning to do a video on it but when it happens I want to go deeper. Importing is definitely a major factor but that's just scratching the surface. I also wanna talk about things like behavior taxes (ex. sugar tax), certain business practices, and some other Bermuda specific issues that make this place so expensive. I'm hoping to get that video out at some point this year so keep an eye out! And thanks for watching!!

    Thanks for representing my neighborhood. I have been going to that Market Place for over 25 years.
    The produce has always been dodgy, at best. Overall I would say they are about a 2 on a scale of 5, but the employees bump that up to a 4 for me, since they always been so great to me.
    Bermudians talk a lot about prices abroad, however our economic structure is different here. We pay consumption tax, not income tax. FICA income tax accounts for roughly 30% of Americans paycheck even before they see anything. Then, they get taxed at the store again buying goods.
    Americans pay for the biggest military in the world through taxes. We Bermudians get to enjoy the one of the most beautiful places in the world, as I believe you mentioned. They pay for war, we pay for beauty.
    Are we perfect, no, but I'll tell you what, I would rather shop at Shelly Bay Market Place any day of the week, than give anyore of my hard earned money to the Walton family, or Bezos, or Musk...
    Then, on a Saturday morning I can stop at the local farmer that sets up across the street by the bus stop around the bend near Old Road. If I'm lucky fresh fish too!
    We need to support our local farmers, businesses, and people, even if frozen produce is "more efficient" than buying the garbage produce that is imported.
    A local carrot, pumpkin, or even broccoli has more nutrients, and local probiotic bacteria that is essential for having a healthy digestive system, than any of the produce you might get at any grocery store here (unless it was grown locally).
    Always love your posts my friend! You are a natural maestro.

  • @RiddyOnline

    Man...I miss that little gym. You're right though..not the nicest by any means but it did the trick. I preferred to go in the evenings though. was too small to risk going after work with a ton of people around. I hate waiting to use machines. Those prices are crazy though...I never really understood how the retailers calculated their markup to the point where it's double and trouble what it costs in the states I understand duty and all that stuff...but when I saw an iPad being sold for like $1300...I had to question life a little bit. Would love to really get a full break down of how that's calculated.

    • @OmarJames
      @OmarJames  2 роки тому

      So, I first joined that gym in 2007 but I only lasted about a few weeks. 15 years later the place is almost exactly the same. Only thing that changed is the price LOL. I'm planning a video on prices in Bermuda so i'll be sure to investigate those calculations for ya! Although i'm sure that info will be hard to get, i'll do my best!

      While the prices are pretty shocking, the wages typically adjust for that. Not enough mind you but in general that's the case. So when I was working in Bermuda (mind you this was a long time ago...around 2008)...in a junior IT consultant position, I was making around $60,000USD...I'm sure now that job would be paying much more. That would've been enough for me to have a moped to get around, a small apartment and to pay my bills. This was fresh out of school. The more money you make obviously, the more comfortably you can live....however, home ownership....yikes. That's a whole different story

    Hi Omar!
    Great video as usual!
    Saturdays are very similar in all countries...but in Bermuda with better weather, nicer views and crazy prices!
    I see that there is a duty free allowance for wine, spirits, cigarettes, cigars,... are these items also much more expensive there?
    If you have concrete examples I can check out how much they cost in Europe.
    Thanks and stay safe! 😉

    • @OmarJames
      @OmarJames  2 роки тому

      One of the few things you can buy here for a decent price is liquor! Wine especially is pretty cheap. Cigarettes and cigars aren’t too bad either compared to some places. Will have another shopping video coming up soon! Look out for more prices!

    Why the railway is gone and how was the temperature there?

    • @OmarJames
      @OmarJames  2 роки тому +1

      Basically, it was killed by the the high cost of maintaining the infrastructure and the rise of the automobile (Bus service was cheaper and more practical)

    • @RiddyOnline
      @RiddyOnline 2 роки тому +2

      He mentioned it in the video that it was scrapped because the salt sea air made them very difficult to maintain (i.e. lots of rust, corrosion and decay). The temperature in Bermuda is typically 75-95F (23-32C) during the height of summer...can touch 100+ easily on really warm days with 100% humidity. The winters are cold and damp with. In the depths of winter...it's typically 50-65F (10-18C) and temps can go either way as well. On bad days during the winter, it's not uncommon for the temperature to dip into the 40sF.

    supermarket prices are always more than walmart; furthermore, prices at walmart in the US increased by 10% - at least... the economy has been so bad for some yrs now that for yrs there is no affordable rentals or house buying - both are too expensive and neither is worth the price (both are overpriced for what you get) Peace

    • @positivepessimist6853

      Not really. We have a charity that traps, spays and neuters stray cats and then re-release them so the number has greatly decreased. They have feeding stations and the stray cats tend to stay close to them so you don't see the cats just roaming all over the place.
      Why do you ask?
