This is literally my vehicle on here!!! This is the third time as well! I dropped it off Monday at 8am and picked it up at 11am! I've been using Scotty the last 4 years and y'all, how he is in the vids is how he is in person! Is he taking new clients by chance?
Why did you have to take a 2017 Camry to him?
Did you get to pet his cat?
What was the problem with the Altima?
My wife and I purchased a 2018 Camry New in October of 2017. I can say that the transmission doesn't "search for gears". Actually it's been pretty seamless, reliable car and with the direct Injection 4 cylinder engine is pretty quick and gets great fuel mileage. On a recent trip to Florida from Indiana it averaged 40 mpg running 65-70 mph both ways.
I've got a '19 XSE 4cyl and it runs BEAUTIFULLY, and the gas mileageis a DREAM.
I remember watching this video years ago, just after I bought it, thinking I'd made a terrible mistake.
This is EASILY the best generation Camry to date.
how is it holding up?

@@ericblackwell70 Jeeze, if there's anything that bugs the ghit out of me, it's spoiled, self righteous drivers who hate our laws so much that they carry firearms to counter the one chance in a thousand that a cop might pull them over thereby giving them the right to possibly race away or to shoot them. Lifetime transmission fluid IS good for the lifetime of the car. Because once the transmission goes, your car's lifetime is over!
Exactly! I call it bull$hit when Toyota says I don't have to change the transmission fluid ever and it gets dark/dirty around 65k. The RAV 4 has 181k miles and I flushed it twice.
I always say "Yea and you don't have to breathe the rest of your life either!"

Recently bought a used 2017 Camry SE. It has 55k miles and I’ve drove it almost a thousand miles so far. I mainly got it bc of all your videos but this one made me hit the buy button. I’m very happy w the car, drives surprisingly smooth. Only complaint is the sealed transmission. It’s very inconvenient, and having to get the fluid at just the right temperature in order for it drain properly stresses me out. I don’t have a convenient temperature gun sitting around anywhere. I may have made a mess changing the transmission fluid on my old 98 f150, but it’s easy as pie. Thanks for all your advice and honesty Scotty, cheers.

Cleiton Abilio Anyone who hates him, hates everyone and everything! What's there to hate about Scotty? He's just " one of the guys "!
I just bought a used 2018 Camry with 28,000. The 8-speed works great. Yes, it shifts up or down depending on the conditions but it isn't doing any "hunting." It could be dependent on driving styles, though. If someone is on/off the gas constantly for no reason, they may feel the car is trying to find a gear. But I'm more of a smooth "Pedal down to go faster, pedal up to slow down" guy. I think passengers appreciate this style of driver.
Well said. Some people drive dumb, having no sense of applying pressure to the pedal. Of course a transmission can’t predicts sped tactics like that
I just use cruise control as much as possible haha
As a man that spends 10+ hours on the road daily, I appreciate this style of driving as well🫵🏼👍🏼
That was the exact reason I went with the 17 vs the 18, I've heard all kinds about those 8 speeds and nothing about the 6 speeds. I'm glad I went with a 2017 I love it
18 is a lot nicer though. totally redesigned , really good looking car esp. from the rear.
Yeah I have a 2017 V6 with the 6 speed. Even the 6 speed is new for me lol.
I came from a 5 speed Mitsubishi Diamante.
HE SPECIFICALLY MEANS THE 8 SPEED TRANSMISSION
The 10 may be as bad. THey are a matched pair.
Keith Bubb ... I own a 2018 Camry with the 8 speed .... shifts flawlessly..... also own a 2020 Hyundai Elantra SEL with the dreaded IVT ... Best transmission I’ve ever owned ... super smooth .,.... no “rubber band” effect ..... 10 year warranty (for us since my wife doesn’t drive 10,000 miles a year )..... entire car is super nice.
@Chooey Sooares I've heard it does that in the beginning as the transmission is new and is adjusting to the driver's driving habits. Once it learns your driving style (lead footed or feather footed) it's work fine.
Anything over 6 speeds in any transmission is ridiculous.
I just bought one what should I expect

I have the 2018 ToyotaCamry SE with 70,358 miles and I don't have any problems...
Scotty I have a 2019 Toyota Camry SE 2.5 engine and the 8 speed trans and it shift GREAT. No problems so far. I will keep in touch. Love the videos learned a lot. THX Scotty
Yes, they did seem to adjust the tuning for the 2019 SE, where the 2018 models were their first run at it.
@Cash Orass Actually given the same size engine, the more cylinders you put in, the smoother the engine but the less power you get given the same capacity. If you want low end torque which is where your daily driving is at, the bigger the cylinder, the more torque you get at the low end, this is why they use 4 cylinders as its smoother than 3 cylinders, basically smooth enough, and with a turbo will produce sufficient torque and power while costing less than a 6 cylinder. Less moving parts also improves its lifespan.
That's also the better-looking one from the front-end. The other styling is ugly.

Bought a brand new Toyota Camry May, 2007. Wife just had her first flat last night; sidewall puncture. First problem was the trunk are with the spare tire was full of rust! As far as we know, the trunk has always been dry. The body drain plugs were later to be found in good condition and sealing. The second problem was that the gray knob that secures the tire in the tire well was frozen tight. After much wrenching with the hands, it became apparent that the knob was stripped, just spinning on the shaft. After spending 1:15 minutes going to get tools, back and forth from our home (about 2 miles away), we ended up getting it pried off. The here comes that "aha" moment. The location for the OEM jack to engage the pinch rail, as per the manual diagram, did not exist! The SE came from the factory with sporty side skirts. These, as I was about to find out, completely covered the pinch rails. Trying to use the subframe was a no go as the flat tire made the ground clearance about an 1" below the lowest setting of the OEM jack. Toyota sold me a car with emergency spare tire kit that can't be used!!!! I had to go pickup a floor jack to put under the subframe in the middle (where I had enough clearance) to raise the entire side of the car enough to fit the OEM jack under. I then slide the floor jack next to the OEM jack on the subframe and jacked it up to replace the tire. Trying to get Toyota to accept their colossal mistake and provide me with comp'd road side assistance for any further flats on the road requiring the use of the spare. Toyota Customer Care did not seem to care too much.

"why im getting rid of my toyota celica"
I have a 2016 Camry with 124k miles (driving for Uber full-time). Still runs like a champ. Changed the spark plugs and no burnt oil found on them.
As for the transmission, I can definitely say that it won't last as long as the engine, I'd give it until 200k or so. Even so, it shifts decently and haven't given me any hassle whatsoever. The car likes to shift to 4th gear a lot more, simply because the gear ratio at 4th gear is 1.0, while the 5th and 6th gear are just Overdrive gears. So technically, you DON'T need the 5th and 6th gear. However, it does make life simpler to have the last 2 gears and you still save gas in those gears while on the highway going 60+ MPH.
Not sure why these manufacturers are doing these absurd 8 to 10-speed transmissions. More gears, more complexity, and although it may shift like a dream, 6 speeds are just fine and do a great job already.
The mileage improved. I'm assuming an engine change from my 2AR helped too.
mine has 190 same car still runs and shifts minty original fluid (transmission)
I totally get this video is 3 years old, I just recently found your channel. I used to be SAE certified on a few things and have a generally good overall understanding of it all. Your videos are perfectly described it brings back all my old knowledge and I have started to explain this all to my son.
I was recently in an accident and they totaled out my 2016 Camry, I bought it with 82,000 miles on it and it was rear ended at 147,000 miles in just over two years. I freakin LOVED that car and it was ultra reliable. I am now in the market for the same or newer, and these videos are answering all the questions I have now in 2022. Thanks for making these.
I feel like the 6 speed auto was the best. Adding more gears after that was pretty much adding more problems.

I have a 2018 Camry and my only complain with the transmission is at start from a red light. It jerks a little. What I loved about it. It shift supper smooth in the mountains. No revving engine. Well adjusted.
Going uphill is super smooth
I'm a witness of that
I recently bought a 2020 Camry XLE (my family’s forth new Camry since 2001) and I love it. My last Camry I drove daily for 12 years and never had a single issue with it and sold it for a great price. I’m planning on keeping this new Camry forever....
I had the 2018 XSE for about a year and LOVED it. Had to get rid of it when I moved to an area that required 4wd, but it was a great car. Had no issues with the 8spd. Felt fine to me.
So you had jerking when it changed gears?
@@Rama_248 No, above it says 'no issues with the 8 speed'.
I love my 4runners 5 speed automatic. 👌🏻
Alexander Estk I have a five speed on my 2010 Civic, no problems. 177k
Love those XSE's with red leather, though!
XSEs*
I just bought a 2020 Camry just about 3 years ago with currently nearly 80.000 miles and it works fine! I love it !
how are you enjoying it still?
Why do you need a 8-speed transmission - 6 speed is enough
i'm happy with my 5 speed manual transmission.
@Simon Chuo Your right - that's excellent fuel economy - as long as it works for you and runs well it may be better - all depends on how much trouble they have with this - if not very much good deal - but expensive to make and repair - no doubt
Donald Ellett 4 speed is enough.
@@madunwerkstatt3093 The test is the repair history of these new transmissions - see what happens
The real question is why do most cars today still have a 6 speed insted of an 8 speed
WOW! The content of the video actually matched the title! I honestly stopped watching you for a few weeks, or even months, just because of those non-matching titles you suddenly started doing for a while. looks like you're back on track. good!
I’m actually quite happy with my ‘18 Camry Hybrid, I’ve almost hit 60 MPG with it, from a midsize car.
I'm thinking to get a SE hybrid, anything you dont like about the car?
Hybrid model have some issue. Better get the base model not the hybrid.
And I thought my 17 was doing good @ 49 mpg mostly city. Oh well, I still love my car.
I took your advice. Bought a 2015 Camry, 4 cyl, LE, 142K miles. Pristine condition, dealer maintained, perfect carfax...thx for the recommendation, Mr Kilmer!
I drove one. Note that you can select 8th, but that actually means "8 or lower" because it will downshift when it feels it needs to.
The most irritating thing was the lane deviation warning thing. In heavy city traffic, I ride tight on the median marker (actually the blowout lane) to see around traffic ahead of me, and it bitches about it, then says "pull over and have some coffee" thinking I'm sleepily drifting.
Why do you need to see that far ahead in traffic? I mean, I could see it if you roll up to stopped traffic cause you wanna see if you need to change lanes due to an accident but after you look and see that traffic is backed up as far as you can see you should just move back into the lane.
Love your channel, Scotty! Being someone who grew up in a family of mechanics, your analysis and advice makes perfect sense!
2018 Toyota Camry bought it brand new. Its been the best car I have ever owned smooth shifting plenty of power Great gas mileage 54,000 miles. I would buy another one.
I have 2020 camry it’s really good car It has covered 70,000 km so far
How is the seat comfort, gentlemen? I’m needing to upgrade from my 05 Accord, and I’m very interested in the Camry SE. Thanks in advance.
@@sherrikwhiteside6107 Very comfortable you won't regret it very nice car.
@@sherrikwhiteside6107 I bought a 2019 with 11k miles. Most comfortable car ever and it’s really quiet at cruising speeds. Gas mileage is crazy good. I average around 40-45mpg on my way to work everyday. Now has 30k miles trouble free so far
Great car except when breaks go out bc recall
I’m on my 3rd Camry. ‘05 died in ‘12 due to service problem . . .radiator hose not completely attached and car seriously overheated. ‘12 was totaled in ‘16 when someone pulled out in front of me. ‘17 is going strong, w/low mileage.
One of my 4 brothers wanted my 2012 Camry, so I let him have it. I drove it for 7 years. He actually needed it for his new wife. I got the new 2019 rav4. I absolutely loved the 2012 Camry. It was wonderful. Hope this car turns out ok.
How is the camry doing ,4 cylinder ?
Finally camry looks good
Scotty: don't buy the new camryyyyyyy!
right!!!
Maybe the XSE version.
That's Toyota for you.
I must have gotten really lucky, I've put 54000 miles on my 2018 and I still haven't had a transmission issue. I hope my luck continues
73k on mine and no problems for my '18 SE!
In my 07 in 2021 and I still love her. Made taking vacations more affordable and still looks clean!
My 2019 Camry SE was gear hunting and now seems to work fine 🤷🏻♂️
Most likely it had to just adapt to your driving style
Either you adapted your driving style or the trans did.
Driving style? With an automatic? LoL.
@@Cryptonymicus Yeah. Some people accelerate hard, others more gently. And everything in between
All new cars have transmissions that learn and try to adapt to the driving style of the driver. So it takes a while for them to learn your driving style.
I bought a Toyota because Scotty talked so highly of them! 13 months and 35k miles on my ‘18 Camry and the 8-speed and I have had no issues! I love the 40+ MPG on the highway.
Trash transmission. Go get a new car lame
What about my 6,000$ loss???? 🙄(if I sold it)
Bought it at the dealer for 23,700... out the door price.... is now worth about 18k KBB... any suggestions?
Daniel Milligan I'm jk lol I know nothing about toyotas. I drive a 17 elantra sport turbo
My God a 2018 yeah I hope you don’t have any problems for the love of God who has problems with cars that are that new
My 2019 4cl se with upgrade package drives flawlessly. The trans shifts great, I hope it stays that way.
I have a 2018 Toyota Camry SE and I've been using it to do uber in NYC ever since...120K miles later no issues at all and still drives like new.
Do you change the transmission fluid ?
I actually hated the 6-speed Camry I4. It kept upshifting and got tired of manual shifting. Now the 8-speed Camry I4 has 3 drive modes that suits my varying acceleration needs that I rarely have to use the manual shift.
The outgoing 2017 Camry was a great deal, they had 3500 rebates on it at one point and could be bought new for under $19k. That covers the "drive off the lot depreciation". It turned out to be a much more reliable car than the 2018. The transmission was also better and quicker to shift.
meanwhile now you can't buy a 2017 camry under 100k miles for les than $20k lol it's sad
@@TheHomicidalTendency I bought my 2017 Toyota Camry XSE 3.5L V6 for 19k with 22k miles.
I have a 2023 Camry SE AWD with ~1000 miles on it so far. I do not notice any of the mentioned issues with the transmission. It seems they've worked out the bugs with this transmission (knock on wood).
My 2019 doesn’t do it either. Seems like these “problems” are just with the 2018 model but I have already seen 2018 Camrys with 200k+ miles on the original transmission. Seems like these “problems” are just annoying and not an actual reliability issue.
We are talking about Toyota here, a company that built their brand on reliability. You think they just whipped up an 8 speed transmission and said let's see if this works, fingers crossed? This new transmission is the result of continuing improvement and extensive research and development, just like the 6 speed.
My 2019 Camry shifts fine. Love this car!
i got a camry se 2019 brand new, it's slow af to accelerate, and doesn't support android auto. i hate it . i'm scared to make left turns because it's so slow.
IT'S STILL NEW..........................IT'S GETTING WORSE CUZ IT'S MADE IN THE USA / MEXICO!
@Tek Kay that's only for the xse. the regular camrys don't have eco mode. It merely tells u when u're driving eco friendly
@Tek Kay you can't turn it off. You're probably thinking about the eco indicator. you can turn off the INDICATOR light that tells you if you're driving eco friendly, but there's no eco mode and regular mode in a regular se. There's only an indicator that tells you if you're being eco friendly.
@@Neji513 mine was like that at first, the gas pedal is wired, it hinges on the floor, and doesn't take off if you step in it hard, it seems, if you step on it gradually, it seems to work, mine takes off fast.

#1) Oil change/all systems checked/some brake work.
#2) New tires/alignment/

#3) Problem with AC "fixed" by cleaning/replacing a broken plastic part deep in the dash.
Sum total was $1,450. which my STIMULUS check paid for.
I 💘 my Toyota @ 125K & hope to keep it forever---unless I find a RAV-4 or the mid-sized SUV in a newer year---Hybrid with NO accidents/lower miles/1 owner here where seniors trade in "luke new" vehicles before 1st set of tires need to be replaced!
Really the best vehicle I've ever driven....
If something works, why don’t they stick with it? I want a 5 speed manual!
This is what I dont get . Why do these auto manufacturers have to mess with something that is not broken?
A good 6 speed ? They should have kept to that 🙄
If it ain't broke...
@@bigchills7194 because it gets better gas mileage. And the regulations are getting more stringent every year because you guys tell your politicians that the climate is changing and we need to do something about it. So really it's your own fault
Companies need to innovate, these things improve with time and research. As Scotty said, the customers are the Guinea pigs, wait for tech to mature over time.
@@bigchills7194 The more gears the more efficient they are. The best example I can think of is a mountain bike. You have 18 or more gears on them which means it's always much easier to be in the right gear for any terrain or condition. If you put a 3 speed gear set on a mountain bike you'd be out of breath all the time or not be able to get up a hill. More ratios = more opportunity to be at the most efficient RPM.
Transmissions are a high risk venture now so only a few companies actually make them. So Toyota is really the supplier of transmissions to many companies .. similar to how Chrysler uses BMW transmissions. In this case Aisin (aka Toyota); supplies GM and Ford (also Volvo, and Hyundai/Kia geared transmissions). Honda truly only make CVTs exclusively for its own cars; but with Acura the geared transmission actually come from Chrysler who is under license to manufacture the ZF (aka BMW) transmissions.
I actually have a 2019 camry and I can confirm that the gearing feels weird, especially since my car before it was a nissan altima. Sometimes at low speeds, the gearing feels like it makes the car jerk a little.

Dont listen to this guy. Toyota updated my transmission software this yr and woala. Smooth sailing and ehem. 41mpg almost 30 in the city
56k miles in and zero issues with my 2018 Camry 8 speed 👍
Only 56k? Whatever
@@TheTallMan50 that's like 20000 a year if he bought it brand new and early on. Tf you want from him
I just bought to 2019 Camry XSE V6 last week and I love the car. In terms of the transmission acceleration, I have noticed a delay and it mostly happened when the car is on Eco mode. To my acknowledgment that mode slows down the acceleration and speed in the first two shift. But if you put it on Normal mode or Sport mode I don’t notice it. Just a heads up to those who are complaining or notice the slow acceleration
@@TheTallMan50 56k in 3 years is a bit above normal. Average driving over 3 years woulid only be about 45k so 56k not too far off. I drive 20k per year (but I don't have a Toyota... yet). I also think Scotty was also talking about people just complaining about them too. Some probably had issues, but it sounded like it mostly just complaints from consumers, and not actual problems (at least not as wide spread as with other companies like NIssan, where everyone knows their transmissions are bad, regardless).
@@HR-wd6cw exactly i have one bro no problems. The people complainting are the people who don't work on their cars so they neeed to shut up lol 🤣
I'm glad Scotty found fault in a mass-market Toyota transmission for once.
This man speaks from experience, and is totally transparent about that....52 years to be exact, he reminds us daily.
After he latches onto a pattern he sees from experience, he verifies it and it becomes part of his repertoire which he seems to hold onto forever.
As a Honda guy for over 25 years, I have always respected what he has to say, and he's said quite often that Hondas have "relatively weak (automatic) transmissions".
I have experienced firsthand some of them, and not just automatics. Several of them were recognized by Honda engineers YEARS before they did anything about them.
Two examples of trannies with flaws that come to mind: 1) the '96-'97 Odyssey and Accord auto trannys. Honda needed to have a V6 Accord to compete with Camry, so they ended up making junk trannies, even the ones mated to the tried-and-true bulletproof F22 motor. How did they deal with the fiasco? First they issued TSBs to their dealerships to replace the TCUs....like 6 different times. Then they are sued. Finally, they extend the warranty and say that it is covered under emissions because it threw a CEL as long as it's still under 150k miles. Otherwise, you're screwed. Shameful. Another one: the 3-4 gear synchro on the 8th gen Civic Si's. Popped out of gear frequently. How did Honda handle that? You guessed it, denied they had a problem until making a design change 2 1/2 years later. Didn't remedy the original owners AT ALL, so sorry but you're SOL. At least we have a TSB that acknowledges that there was a problem and tells you how to fix it. Gee, thanks H.
There are a few more I could cite. These ones stung me personally.
What Scotty fails to acknowledge is that these are isolated occurrences that Honda didn't handle well.
Tell me that the automatics for the 2004-2008 TSX's are less than bulletproof? I call BS.
Tell me that a 1990-93 Accord 5-speed manual won't last a million miles with just the usual maintenance and not driving it like you stole it. I call BS.
Hondas track record is pretty damn good and they DO know how to make a transmission to match their superb engines....at least they DID. I. like Scotty, don't buy or drive anything that hasn't been tested by time and experience, so I can't speak to the newer models. Anyhow, I think if he watched the overall picture with Honda as closely as he does Toyota, he'd say that neither one has the edge historically in terms of bad runs on trannies.....I think Toyota just handled theirs better and in a more timely manner.
I now buy my beloved old Hondas with proven track records of having solid and reliable transmissions. Do the same with Toyotas, and you should be good to go.
Just my .02. Keep 'em coming and I'll keep watching.
Nice comment..very informative..you should start your own UA-cam channel about your experiences with Honda.
But has Toyota had anything comparable to the transmission issues in Hondas and Acuras? Let's not forget the weak automatics in TL's, especially 2000-2003 (but I suspect this was the same transmission causing problems elsewhere in the lineup). Toyota has built some oil burners and engines that have had sludge issues that are routinely forgotten about, but Honda has also had some uncharacteristic engine problems with piston ring failures. Honda has now gone down the road of CVT's and turbos and who knows how that will turn out.
