  • In this video, I will show you how to make alcohol lamps from scratch.
These lamps can be used for chemistry projects, cooking, and other useful stuff. Also, these lamps can be fueled by a variety of alcohol including Denatured alcohol (Ethanol), Isopropyl alcohol, Rubbing alcohol, and even Distilled Spirits that you love.
Always use protective equipment like safety glasses, and gloves especially when dealing with denatured or methyl alcohols. Be careful in using alcohol as fuel and always exercise common sense.
Don't forget to subscribe to my channel for more tutorial videos! See you later guys.

I used to make them from empty baby food jars and punch a few holes in a tin can to put on top and made a quick easy camp stove. I could heat water for instant coffee in about 5 minutes.

Alcohol is good for burners as it burns clean, low, blue and hot, but when it comes to light, you need to have high yellow flame to be able to generate light, and this is only possible with kerosene especially for wicked lamps. Even oils doesn't work although many claim because oil isn't flammable at room temperature and air pressure and the wick will keep glowing and will be eaten down quickly. Try kerosene and you will be amazed, you can control the power of the light by adjusting the wick length

Add a pinch of table salt to the alcohol. Turns the flame yellow.

one hole lets air in, the other out, so that the alcohol level can go down. without the holes the alcohol would stop going up the wick

The drinking alcohol only works if it's above 100 proof! (50% abv)
Just in case anyone filled it with Smirnoff and thought something wasn't working- it's gotta be the strong stuff!

    • @-LuxLunae-
      @-LuxLunae- 3 роки тому

Anything around 80 proof will burn if you get it hot enough, you just have to use a blowtorch or something to get it going. Obviously 100 proof or higher will burn better though.

Whatever drinking alcohol you use, make sure it's around 140 proof (70% alcohol) or higher. Golden Grain is 199 proof, so be damn careful using it either way. Drinking it or using it in your lamp.

Store it in a Ziplok bag, sure... just make sure the lamp is completely cooled before you do this or you'll be scraping melted plastic off of your lamp.

As fuel is used up, it has to draw air in or you create a vacuum.

You could distill any alcoholic beverage and obtain mostly pure alcohol but the cost is not worth it. Alcohol evaporates at a lower temperature so you put the solution into a boiling flask with a vent at the top running to a cooling tube. Preferably coiled to increase cooling time and an ice bath helps condensation. The end of that cooling tube needs to run into a sanitized container that is also heat resistant. Copper was the old material modern day stainless steel for large production or home diy and borosilicate glass (pyrex makes a lot of it) collection flask. Don't do this to make stronger alcohol for consumption. It will kill you and it's going to hurt the whole time you are dying. If it's for fuel purposes full send just maintain safe practices because it's now a volatile liquid. Hey man thanks for making this video I need to do some plastic welding repairs and wax carving tools with an alcohol lamp will work perfectly.

Nice vidio for making a glass stove but I think it would be safer if you make it from a metal to avoid over heating of the glass

    • @Turrican60
      @Turrican60 2 роки тому

Glass is typically manufactured at 1400 to1600 degrees, and that's SERIOUSLY hot. The heat produced by this burner is absolutely trifling in comparison, ergo it won't cause any problem if the jar is free of obvious defects. Relax.
