As much as I like the original Colonial Road bridge, I understand your reasons for wanting to replace it. But what I'd like to know is, why not replace the Manhasset Viaduct with a two-track version and make the rest of the Port Washington Branch two tracks?
Byron Chavarria No it does not. In fact, all busy LIRR lines do NOT need grade crossings. If we used your logic, then we should have grade crossings on the Babylon Branch between Jamaica and Babylon.
The MTA should consider adding a few Shuttle trains from Jamaica to Grand Central Station Stopping at Kew Gardens, Forest Hills and Woodside during both the Peak Hours and Off Peak Hours. I would suggest that Woodside becomes a major transfer point for the LIRR if coming from Eastern Long Island.
its June of 2018 and its 5 years behind schedule. from Wikipedia East Side Access has faced controversy for its multiple delays, its high cost, and its bloated scope. Various delays have increased the cost of construction nearly threefold from the original estimate of $3.5 billion, as well as pushed back the original opening date of 2008 by fifteen years.
A Grade Crossing would not only make it less safe to drivers and walkers, but makes it less convenient and backs up traffic, and trains get hurt too if they decide to run these at high frequencies.
why do we need a new colonial road bridge its not that busy why not just dead end the road. And make cars go down grace avenue all the way to west shore road (theres already a trfafic light and exsisting turning lanes there) then make a right to where colonial road end at west shore road now. It would just add 1 minute to there commutes. Instead of wasting money replacing a bridge where a simple detour would solve the problem!
RCTNextGeneration We are replacing the bridge because it’s old. Colonia road is more direct than Grace Avenue and it needs to support more truck traffic.
The colonial bridge is a disaster and needs to be replaced..when it rains heavy or when snow & ice start to melt the drainage on the track bed area & nearby signals is terrible..
Port Wash'tn is a town of 16,000. Just how many trains does it need? I don't think every one of those 16,000 takes the train. Passing sidings and pocket tracks would be feasible, but double-tracking (as some other commenters have suggested) would be way over-the-top ridiculous.
Stan Patterson That philosophy works if the population of Port Washington stays the same or decreases. Most likely, however, is that the population will increase. I'm not saying it's needed right now, but that it shouldn't be completely thrown out the window -- IMHO, the EIS should be completed by 2040.
Don't get me wrong, I love trains and I HATE traffic jams, I also hate seeing Gov't spend people's tax dollars on frivolous things when there are so many other problems that desperately need fixing. If the track were already double-tracked, but just desperately in need of serious rehabilitation that would be one thing, but to want to put in double track where d-t has not existed before is going to be hellishly expensive, and more so with each day that passes by. If there were some future expansion project beyond Pt Wash'tn that will require d-t, then it would make more sense to be doing this. Maybe I'm missing something. If Port Washington is to grow seriously in population, it appears to me that they will have to forego some of their golf course and/or green space, or start building skyscrapers and filling them up. I mean no disrespect whatsoever to the citizens living there, past, present, or future.
Byron Chavarria to improve train service. It used to have grade crossings, but removed for safety and to accommodate the new M1s on the heavy ridership Branch.
honestly the port Washington branch kinda needed this

JeremiahC99 Fuck Off
Byron Chavarria What?
@@TheRailLeaguer Evidently Byron doesn't want to face the fact that grade crossing eliminations are safer than grade crossings.
That audio was amazing

Fredrick Wells Another thing your should consider is expanding the use of Hunterspoint Avenue and Long Island City stations for additional trains.
