Hmmm... I think your original way pulls a lot more to the top making it more pronounced. The horseshoe looks much more subtle. So, I'd say it's actually like a 3rd way to do it rather than a one or the other situation.
The horseshoe magnet pulls to the sides so the effect is really visible when you move your nails around. You can see it better when she has her finger in the magnet still.
I have been using a horseshoe magnet, and it works very well. Sometimes I lift up my finger closer to the top ends instead of keeping my nail down inside. I definitely like velvet better than a line.
I think if it was a prettier shifty+ish polish… it would look better. This magnet does the Velvet perfect but I still like my zig zags and cat eyes linear. 🩵
If you elevate your finger a bit within the horseshoe, you'll get a more pronounced velvet effect. I was "meh" on the horseshoe until I lifted my finger to be closer to the top. An easy way to do this is by nestling a small piece of cardboard into the bottom of the horseshoe. Then put your finger on top of the cardboard and apply your polish as you normally do. 😊
I also just got the horseshoe magnet since i prefer velvet over cateye. So much easier and doesnt disperse as much as the wand. Whoever came up with this idea is genius!
I would like to see this done where you put the horseshoe magnet over your nail right after you paint it. Would probably get a similar effect to the hand held wand.
I agree. I like the look of the wand way better because it pulls the magnetic particles to the top. With the horseshoe under I feel like it pulls the particles to the bottom of the nail. Would be great to see how the horseshoe on top (let’s say over the nail on a table) looms like. Thanks for these videos!
Love the horseshoe magnet! I think only magnetizing the top layer isn't doing this polish justice, though. You can still see the magnetic pigment underneath that didn't move when the top layer was applied.
Oh! Im surprised i actually liked the look of the regular nail magnet! The sparkle really stands out on the bottom nail!.... Although maybe its the angle; if you did this again and tilted you fingers more to capture the shift im wondering if the top one would look similar at a different angle!
I got my horseshoe magnet from a hardware store months ago. Game Changer. I love the thing. I couldn't do the velvet effect to save my life. I love my horseshoe. Magnetic nail polish is so fun.
I struggle with getting anything other than the "velvet" effect with magnetic polishes. Which to me looks very little different from applying unmagnetized for most polishes. I can get the effect to appear fine when using the magnets when on my silicone mat and when on the swatch sticks. But on my nails its like the magnets are always too big. I have a very strong C curve to my nails and whilst they're not super narrow its still like it covers too much of the nail. Just magnetizing the top layer makes the effect even more subtle. It always looks amazing on others, but I seem cursed with only getting the velvet style. So I haven't bothered trying a horseshoe as I always get that look even if I don't want it. Oh and I have even tried doing the magnet on the silicone mat & then applying the finished polish strip like a decal. But as soon as its following the curve of my nails, the clear strong line becomes more like velvet look.
I prefer with the new magnet! It turned it into liquid velvet. 😍 I do find myself wishing to see you rock your finger from side to side so that I can see the effect from a different angle sometimes. ❤
I just bought one and a bunch of mooncat magnetics! I was looking for swatches and saw some horseshoe velvet videos, and fell in love. I found one that was $14 including shipping off reddit
When I do a full magnetic manicure with the small magnet, it’s SO hard to make all of the nails look exactly the same. With the horseshoe magnet, each nail looks exactly the same so I love the horseshoe one because it’s easier to use and the full manicure looks consistent!!!
I love the horseshoe magnet! Absolutely made things easier as soon as I got it. I got more excited about magnetics!! Quick question, is there a cleanup brush that you recommend? I need a new one and I am overwhelmed with choices lol Thanks, as always! ❤️💕💫
I do prefer the horseshoe effect. In this video, the wand technique does seem to create a more glamorous look. But I think that in person, the horseshoe gives that smooth and clean and luxe velvet effect that I've been craving. At least, that's my assumption. I can't get my hands on a horseshoe magnet for less than $40CAD where I am so I've only used your wand technique!!
I Love using my horseshoe magnet 🧲 I prefer the velvet look too. The cat eye style never gives me a line as I’ve had to sit the magnet under my finger and it’s always a blob. Velvet look is much better IMO. 💜
I adore my horseshoe magnet, and it has changed my preference from cat’s eye over velvet to the reverse. I especially love using it with Mooncat’s Fields of Lavender with a single coat of KBShimmer’s Bloodbelly Jelly on top. It makes such a gorgeous, deep red that my nails look like gemstones
I can't wait for ilnp to release theirs. I tried to order one but it's either sketch from Amazon or i need to drive out of town to pick up at store 😪 so i'm patiently waiting 😁
I think they give a different but equally beautiful kind of magnetization. The horseshoe looks more 3D and gem-like while the velvet method looks like.. velvet lol
I hesitate to even call it velvet. To me a horseshoe magnet gives such 3d depth that it makes your nails look almost like gel capsules. I used it with a blue-green magnetic and my nails look like little NyQuils.
I have a smaller horseshoe and yeah, it's mani-changing! A main benefit is that the particles are a lot more uniform across all my nails. Another is the depth of the effect.
In this particular polish I like the top one. You can see more of the base color and I like that better than with the 🧲 where you only see the base around the edges. Hope that makes sense.
When I do magnet nails, I apply top coat *immediately* while the nail is still on/in the magnet and do my waiting for the top coat and it lasts better that way.
I ordered a 3d printed one from polish pickup and forgot I did and ordered one from sj3 designs. So much better for me than trying to use the wand. I really want to see that almost dull glass looking coat at extreme angles. Did you get the horseshoe from ilnp?
I could never get the velvet style to work until I got a horseshoe magnet. It’s like magic! I get distracted turning my fingers back and forth to see the colors change!
The top was prettier and actually I was expecting it to be the non-magnetized one lol. It's pretty how subtle it is. I wish they'd just make the stick ons to have that magnetized heart-shaped already, that's still the goat design of these nails. Drying would be a nightmare with polish lmao.
I have a horseshoe magnet and I love it. I'm not sure this clip does it justice because it is a real game changer and makes all the nails look so pretty and uniform.
I take three of the wand magnets Stick them together till they're in a u shape and then I paint my nails inside that you and I get perfect velvet every time
On video, yes. But I’ve tried both on myself and a wand just doesn’t compare. The effect of the horseshoe magnet is best when your finger is moved side to side, not up and down like shown here.
You're supposed to sit your nail in the groove of the horseshoe for the velvet effect! But in theory it should work in the opposite direction as well 🥰
Was the left side of your nail velvetized with the horseshoe magnet? In the video, it looks like the horseshoe magnet velvetized rhe right side only or more than the left.
Yes it was velvetized, it's just that at different angles you can see different layers, so when I turn my nail the left side looked white and the right looked beige!
I don't like the big ones. Sj3 designs (and cracked polish) sell little 3D printed ones. Cracked uses the sj3 ones and as long as you dont mind green, they should be faster to get than one directly from sj3. They are smaller and safer to use than the big ones
I've seen a couple people do velvet nails by just putting two of the wand magnets side-by-side in opposite directions and placing their finger on top. The best way I can think ro represent it without a picture is, um...imagine the letter "b" is a wand with the bottom being the rectangular magnet, and "q" is a wand with the magnet at the top. It'd look like: bq
They might be sold out on ILNP's website, they have been promoting them a lot of Insta, so they were available to buy, but I think they didn't make a lot of them right away because they weren't sure how many people would be interested, so they just sold a few to see how interested people will be.
@@bubblegumnails4562 they said on the FB group that there was a shipping error and they weren't sure they'd have them in time for black Friday sales. They pushed out the sell date until they have them on hand
If you’re worried about it drying before you can get the desired look- you should try a uv gel magnetic polish! You have as much time as you want to get your desired look 🙃 They also have different shaped magnetic wands you can play around with too!
This is ILNP "Sandbar" and a horseshoe magnet - you can buy them on Amazon!
Now I want to experiment with different strengths of magnetization to see if it would make different looks.
This is really cool 😎 and I’m getting one because the wand isn’t working for me 😅
Do you have a link? I looked for it but couldn’t find
@@crisy0728 I don't think ILNP is selling their horseshoe magnets yet (or if they have, it was a limited quantity) but there are others.
Why am I pretty much never let down by ILNP?🤩
Hmmm... I think your original way pulls a lot more to the top making it more pronounced. The horseshoe looks much more subtle. So, I'd say it's actually like a 3rd way to do it rather than a one or the other situation.
That's a good point!

You're a hero! Thanks for this tip!
Thanks for posting this tip, can't wait to try it!
Thanks! I'll try that. I seem to get uneven effects w/ the horseshoe. If my finger is even slightly tipped, one side is always more pronounced.
It is a game changer for those of us who experience tremors and/or have difficulties keeping hands steady!!
I don't personally do velvet nails that frequently but that tool looks totally worth it. Especially for people who may have unsteady or shaky hands.
It's definitely a game changer!!
It is i hated magnetic nails until I bought one 😀
The regular magnet one popped more, but the EASE of a horseshoe magnet makes it the winner imo
The ease definitely makes a huge difference haha!
I also just got the horseshoe magnet since i prefer velvet over cateye. So much easier and doesnt disperse as much as the wand. Whoever came up with this idea is genius!
Agreed, I'm just so impressed!!
I always thought you were supposed to put your finger under the arch with the nail facing the magnet but is this the way you do it too?
Ive only used it like you see in the video, but i guess it would work "upsidedown" too! @RG_Eph
I would like to see this done where you put the horseshoe magnet over your nail right after you paint it. Would probably get a similar effect to the hand held wand.

I love it with wand way better!
For sure your method produces a better effect.
The horseshoe magnet is beautiful!
Love the horseshoe magnet! I think only magnetizing the top layer isn't doing this polish justice, though. You can still see the magnetic pigment underneath that didn't move when the top layer was applied.
Honestly I prefer the look with just the top layer magnetized but I know a lot of people like to magnetize every layer for a more intense look 😅😅
I totally get that. Magnetics are so fun with how many options there are! 😊
Absolutely Love this, I have it myself❤️
Love the horseshoe magnet look.❤
Oh! Im surprised i actually liked the look of the regular nail magnet! The sparkle really stands out on the bottom nail!....

Do you by chance have any sand textured glitter polish? I used to get my nails done with it all the time because the texture was so fun!
I'd honestly like to see more movement in the side by side comparison. I definitely see a difference but not how that difference shakes out.
I like the top, its more subtle which is more my style personally.
I like them both! Both have different looks so it seems like a 3 option for a magnetized style 😊
Love it!❤
Ever since getting mine I’ve been revisiting all my magnetics in the velvet style. It makes it so easy!

Definitely the one with the horseshoe magnet ❤
I like them both but I love the look of the horse shoe magnet!
ohhh i love the top one most for sure! looks so much more 3 dimensional on the nail

@KelliMarissa absolutely! And it's very visually appealing, too.
I prefer the wand magnet one much more.

I like the regular magnet better
is it gritty?
No it feels smooth to the touch!

how much was it?
Do you need a special polish or the magnet? I think it looks great!😊

Sandbar is so good! I'm definitely going to have to get a horseshoe.
I love this color so much 🥲
I love my horseshoe magnet! I have shaky hands, so before I got it I would end up bumping my nails on the bar magnets every time 😅
I got a magnet from Cracked Polish and it is amazing! Helps so much.
It makes such a difference!!

horseshoe magnet for me. i want one!
I prefer the top.
Ooh you got one of the cute ILNP ones! I just have an uncool bright red industrial one
Haha I was gonna buy one of the red ones but I am excited that nail brands are starting to make cuter ones now 😂😂
I'm not much on magnetic polishes, but the horshoe magnetic is the one if choose if I'd use magnetic polish
I have a 30# magnet. I don’t really like the look as well. I never can velvetize like you do. Mine always is never smooth.
Do you have better luck with this type of magnet??
I'm definitely on the horseshoe train. I think the 22 lb works well enough and is cheaper.
Ooh I didn't realize there were different strengths!
@@KelliMarissa I have a 10 lb. one and it works great and was less than $15 😊
10 lb didn’t do much. Got the 20 lb pull and it was awesome. I don’t think anyone needs 30 lb pull for nails at such a higher price point
