I moved to L.A. in 1964 when I was 19, searching for a music career like thousands of others. I was at almost every club there was on Sunset between 1965 and 1969. Amazing experience for me in my life. Met a lot of influential people in music. Even got to perform in some of the clubs. What a time that was. Better than college!
Oh yes.. A musician in LA felt like paradise, Especially when you moved 60 years ago. (Beatle mania was still going? ( I could be wrong, the 60s is before my time..lol. Amazing. In 64 I wasn’t even born yet” . I didn’t move to LA until 80s during hair metal thing. I wanted to move sooner, but ended up in Nashville in 86 (Nashville: Even at that time Nashville was NOTHING like is today) Today I picture Nashville (during the 60s) a place that used to be well known musicians came recorded (big names yet nobody knew)? I was in band (whitelace) that did NOT belong in Nashville. Although well ahead on ‘image’. When moving on sunset strip. Already gawdy cloths expensive jackets sparkling sequence with fringe, everything before going to LA. They said it was partying’ bringing girls to rehearsal (Elvis museum) late night. No they got rid of us so they could hire guys from LA studying at G I T Music institute. Better musicians like the guy who replaced Paul Gilbert in his old band’ Excalibur’ from early eighties. They gave us plane tickets back to calif with 500$ bucks a piece. And said they would send our old equipment we brought old Marshall half stack, fender squire with modified pickups’ Kong distortion, echo pedal the absolute worst. In whitelace they bought us new Laney half stacks with rack mount system, (wireless which I hated at the time took away from your tone back in 86) Which we also received an additional 500$ dollars two weeks later. LA was blast. I was full blown asshole. A more subtle approach as narcissist using rhetoric. It feels like KING.
Thats me and my Friend Barbara in the cage ive got the skirt.. We had fun fun made money met stars and we traveled together it was a Awsome time in my life .....
You're so groovy Cindy ,I go to The Whisky(new generation) ,but it's not as cool as it use to,they've gotta book better bands, get down with the times & not get stuck in metal/hair bands, there's so many awesome bands in L.A to showcase at the Whisky & bring it back.
6.22-7.10.66 Whisky A-Go-Go, West Hollywood Gene Clark and The Group/The Locos/The Doors Gene Clark had left The Byrds in March 1966 due to his fear of flying. This was a rare performance by Gene and his band The Group, featuring Bill Rinehart (ex-Leaves) on lead guitar, Chip Douglas (ex-Modern Folk Quartet, soon-to-be Monkees producer) on bass and drummer Joel Larson (ex-the ‘original’ Bay Area Grass Roots).
Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful time capsule. The Doors, Love, etc., man, it would be great to go back in time and just witness the vibe and the atmosphere of that great era.

Love to see this as I'm 65. You could have fit Whiskey a go go in the Penalty Box, Wildewood, NJ 4 times. But it died in the early 80's after Jersey raised the drinking age from 18 to 21.
This came off the 1967 movie Mondo Mod. I own this on DVD along with The Hippie Revolt, on Something Weird Video. Mondo Mod is mainly about the Sunset Strip, The Hippie Revolt is about the Summer of Love in San Francisco. Mondo Mod actually features cinematography from Laszo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond, and they really become big names lending themselves on Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and many more.
A lot of great bands played there. West Coast mod scene that turned freaky after the hippies came in late '65. The New York scene was louder and more in your face while the the LA scene was mello had the good drugs. Uppers, Downers, and Acid while New Yorkers were still learnin to smoke pot. The hippies invaded Greenwich Village about '67-68 but in LA they were already in full hippie swing by '66. Acid hit the streets of New York in 67. NY Bands were copying the LA bands by '67 and the Folk sound died.
I read somewhere that two of the biggest American influences on the Beatles circa 1965 - 1966 were Bob Dylan and the Byrds. The Byrds as a group did not have a long lifespan, but they were a hugely important band.

It may be a jam based on that song, but i don't think its the Byrds. 1) non of them look like members of the byrds in 67, 20 what little you can see of the name on the bass drum does not indicate a capital B, 3) listen to the vocals at around 4:30- sooooo bad, the Byrds never sounded like that.

My uncle lives in the penthouse apartment right up the street. He lives with Rip Taylor, the legendary comedian. You can see the club from their balcony. I remember when they filmed The Doors there. Val Kilmer was walking around and it looked as if Jim had returned to set the place on it's ear again.
This is from the 1967 documentary, Mondo Mod. I have it on a double feature DVD. The other feature is a 1967 documentary, The Hippie Revolt. It's on Something Weird Video.

What is the name of the band playing? Isn’t it the mugwumps? When Charlie Manson was being helped by Dennis Wilson to get a recording contract, Dennis brought Charlie to the whiskey and clubowner Mario Magliarti Took an instant dislike the Manson and kicked him out of the club because Charlie was being insolent to one of the dancers. He had the bouncers pick Manson up and put him in the street and Charlie yelled you can’t do this to me I’m Jesus , Magliari replied , yes I can I’m god.

How cool would it have been to be hanging out there during the 60's and 70's
ed ubinas I did. ;) This was the 60's. I can't speak for 70's; that was a very different crowd. Rainbow Club and "glam rock" took over.

Much younger crowd than 1964.
Couldn't possibly be a very Young TomPetyy could it? He did Needles and Feels a whole lot better.
John Travolta at 2:10? Nope - considering that, among other things, he was only 13 years old at the time.
It is "Feel A Whole Lot Better" by The Byrds.
yes it does, a great Sixties riff, so cool ...

Wow, what a bummer ....

@Dougdenslowe Actually Feel A Whole Lot Better came out in 1965 - so this is just an instrumental cover of it...
Absolutely!

What is the second song?
it would have been awsome to go to the whiskey when The Doors were the house band
trennonkingful They were never a "House" Band; they played the Whiskey, that's all.
The Doors lasted a week at the Whiskey-Go-Go. They were fired due to Jim Morrison's impromptu disgusting profanity during 'The End.'
Great eye on spotting Travolta. If that's not him it sure looks like the man.
Doubt that's Travolta. He would have been only 12 or 13 at that time. I met him at the Roxy in Hollywood around 1975. Really nice guy at the time.
