The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he doesn't exist.

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  4 роки тому +3

That's a common cliche, but I don't agree. Frankly, I think we give the devil way too much attention and if we chose to never speak of him again that would be fine. The greatest "trick" the devil pulls is not convincing the world that he doesn't exist, but rather encouraging us not to care. Apathy, more than anything else, is the work of the devil.

If one accepts for the sake of argument that Baudelaire was a degenerate who didn't recognize the light of Our Lord in his own life - in and of itself a precarious and simplistic presumption - that doesn't mean that His light didn't radiate ever the more even if His instrument may not have been wholly aware of it, via the prowess of his literary skills at the least.
It can be a convenient omission of the mind to gloss over the many descriptive cautions against the ways and abode of the evil one that Jesus provides His followers in the Gospels, but amidst His myriad and manifold blessings are the reminders that hell is real, and that you do not want to end up there.
When these necessary glimpses of the ravages wrought by our sins come into the culture from those such as Baudelaire, and on down to the present times, the right response is recognizing the warning only as much as required to put our focus back on Jesus.
In short the devil's greatest trick isn't much of a feat - every evil successfully promulgated nevertheless by contrast reveals the vast heavenly rays to be that much more brilliant for those souls disposed to see. The deeper the darkness, the brighter the light that shines forth from it.
TL:DR - Both the saying referenced by the OP and Brother Casey are right. Finding oneself in agreement with Baudelaire's quote is the first step to putting one's focus back where it belongs. No matter the trick, once it's known as such it's rendered moot.

I just recently confessed a huge sin that has bothered me for years and always avoided saying it out loud. It is related to your talk today. When i was young i was living in a bad situation (not a good excuse ever for doing what i did) and needed to move on and I was stupid enough to say that i would bargain with the devil to get me out of here, i meant it. I am devastated over that now but didn't care back then. Please say a prayer for me because Father has said his absolution over me but it still haunts my soul.

    • @acamon
      @acamon 3 роки тому +5

God can forgive any sin, however big or awful it feels to us. If you truly regret what you did, and you've gone to confession and received absolution, then your sin should be something that you learn from not feel bad about. Instead of focusing on what you did, how bad it was etc focus on God and his love and mercy. Sometimes the encounter with mercy we experience after a troubling sin can be a powerful step on our journey with God. X

Your guilt has had holding you back to fully accept His grace- forgiveness ...well, as a human you can take it as like this narrative-- a father will always forgive and will continue to love his child and he might be saddened in fleeting moments but will not hold disdain to his child!...( Conversely, you might consider this - that you exude gracefulness in handling your dire situation then because this had undeniably lead you closer to Him!)

First off the devil can’t OWN your soul or anyones soul. God is the only one who can send to hell. Hell is not Satans to rule in fact just like all condemned to hell he also is condemned. God is the most powerful and he and only he has the power to send anyone to hell.. your soul belongs to God in the first place you can’t bargain a deal with something that technically isn’t yours? All souls are made by God and therefore belong to God.
Father we know you are a most loving God concerned with our minds and our convictions. You know that not everything we say we mean and that some things that fall off our tongues are not from our hearts. You examine our hearts and by this we know your judgement is just. And we can trust you will have mercy on those who act in true ignorance. You are always willing to forgive any sin to those who’s hearts are truly repentant. Amen

The devil is very clever, we can't deny it. It's said that he was the greatest angel before his fall. If he was one of the first creatures ever created, then he had a "eternity" to get more intelligent than all of us together. It's his nature that obligates him to tempt us with these "foolish" resources that God allows him to use. But of course it's not our cognitive capacity that makes us saints, but our connection with the love of God, fixing our eyes on God like P. Caesey said and saying YES to Him like Mary did. 🙏

I would not call the devil's games stupid.. He is very cunning.
Eph 6.11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
    Jude 1.9
But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not dare accuse the devil of blasphemy, but simply said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (This took place when Michael was arguing with the devil about Moses’ body.)
    1 Peter 5. 8-9
Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

Mark 13.22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
Alot of deception from Satan, the angel of light...
Jesus referred to him as “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31), and Paul calls him “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2) and “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4). John makes a further distinction when he says: “We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).

Thank you for the gracious opportunity to respond. I pray your ministry will be very fruitful.
Yet refusal to discuss Satan strikes me to be as wise as army commanders refusing to discuss what the enemy is up to. Thank God for holy scripture that gives us insight into how the devil works (II Corinthians 2:11 & Ephesians 6:11): his accusations (Rev. 12:10); his false wisdom (James 3:15); instigating strange tests (Job 1:6-12 & 2:1-7); his eagerness with God's permission to deceive those who love deception (II Chronicles 18:19 & II Thessalonians 2:11); his adding words/phrases to scripture (Matthew 4:6); Satan posing as an angel of light (II Cor. 11:14) and some 20+ other scripture passages.
When I pray for wisdom, I often ask for understanding of how to defeat the power of Satan in my life, and thankfully, God has answered those prayers. Here's fundamental trick to watch out for: Satan can easily deceive us through other religious people like myself with good intentions, but never through the Words of Christ and Sacred Scripture himself taken in the right Spirit. In short, always be careful to trust Christ and not man (Jeremiah 5:13). The CCC was written by the Spirit of God using hundreds if bishops, not one single man. One needs the CCC to understand scripture. Don't neglect it.

Gotta disagree with you in this one Father. Evil is smart, and insidious. The worst kind of evil comes in the guise of good, and says "you're good, but those people, over there, are wicked and bad and you have not only the right, but the obligation, to subdue them." That's when evil takes control, and catastrophe results: discrimination, slavery, the Holocaust, Stalin's purges, and the list goes on and on. I respect evil. I really do. And yet injustice needs to be confronted and stood up to, but it's hard to oppose evil without becoming evil oneself. As the sister in Doubt said, in fighting evil one sometimes has to step away from God, but there is a price.

I agree with much of what you say but I would not call the Devil a fool in this sense. Yes he was a fool to rebel and his gifts are cheap and worthless but hes wise in his understanding of humans hes watched us since the beginning and knows exactly when and where to strike at the vulnerable to make it sound like a deal to good to be true. He will give you everything you want and all he wants is a piddling little thing you don't really care about it's foolishness of course but in the right m oment of weakness. Well Peter denied Jesus thrice didnt he and if the stories are true St Theophilus the penitent sold his soul for a role he had already turned down. When we are strong it's easier to resist Satan, although he is very clever, but he doesnt focus on the strong. I'm reminded of a quote from Catholic demonologist Ed Warren "the devil isnt a damned fool hes a damned angel and if you let him he will make a damned fool of you." I agree cleaving to Jesus is the defense but discernment matters there as well there are false prophets active in the world today who claim and truly believe that they are buying that private jet rather then building a promised hospital for the greater glory of God.

I do not think the video is entirely wrong. You make some great points. But for people who have been spiritually wounded by the devil mostly in part to they way they lived their lives, cultivating sinful habits, knowingly or unknowingly, it is not that easy to just state the devil is a fool and move on. There were times in my life where I thought I was going on the right path but was actually not growing in virtue at all. My pride would tell me I was doing all the right things but it was a lie. The devil is by leaps and bounds more intelligent and cunning than we are. Given the right circumstances He can make you think your doing the right thing when you not.
As you said prayer (faith) and practicing living virtuous lives (works)are some main defenses. I just would not recommend ignoring the devil. We must be vigilant, always aware that he is lurking but not obsessing over it or taking him lightly. How did the saints who were attacked by satan deal with it. They could not just say your a fool and all will be good. They had to prepare, be disciplined and fight.
I guess my point is lets not fall into the presumption that all the will be well . Ignoring something does not make it go away.

If the devil is bad and will hinder us in knowing and loving God, why would God allow his existence? Why would God allow temptations that most of us helplessly fall for, that, even seasoned holy men like priests and bishops succumb to? God knew that we are very weak, but why would He allow it? No one can match God’s power, it is wrong to believe that the devil is competing with God for eternity.
Everything is God's kingdom including this material world. But this is a part of His kingdom where wayward spirit souls like us live. The devil is really God’s servant tasked to carry his mandate in this part of His kingdom - to delude us because that’s what we want. We fell from grace from His spiritual kingdom because we didn’t want to obey Him. God has given us this (educational/correctional) world to learn. The devil put us in the illusion that we are our bodies and our enjoyment is gratifying our senses. The devil is just helping us and providing what we want. God covered our knowledge and love for Him because we rejected Him.
That love needs to be reawakened and nurtured again, through Jesus’ first and foremost commandment. It cannot just believe and have faith, we need to actively develop that love like how we develop the love for the person we like in this world. That’s how we relinquish the devils influence on us. The devil will walk away in shame, like Jesus shamed him repeatedly. Unalloyed devotion to God.
That’s how material enjoyment becomes shallow and tasteless, because loving God means feeling of overflowing transcendental happiness. If we have been practicing religiosity all our life and yet our attraction for the world is still strong as ever, we haven’t had a change of heart and we still gratify our senses, exploit people and children, then, we have failed in our practice. We have failed Jesus and God.
In the Vedas (book of knowledge written 5000 years ago), the devil is called Maya - illusion personified. She is a servant of God and tasked to tempt us and grant our material desires for enjoyment. Illusion is the predominating energy that governs the world. In the spiritual kingdom of God, the predominating energy is love. There is no question of illusion. But, we still have our free will. That’s the nature of love - out of free will and not by force.
Jesus was tempted by the devil but Jesus shows how a pure devotee of God behaves. He was already in the highest platform of spirituality, feeling an overwhelming love for God that nothing material enjoyment can match and tempted him to give up God. Unlike many of us, we give in immediately even to a slight temptation. Why? Because we want to satisfy that innate feeling of “to love and be loved”, to enjoy and be happy.
But because we are away from God and we think we are the body, we think we will be happy by fulfilling the body’s desires. But, this inherent feeling of love is our natural loving relationship with God that we misplaced in the forms of this world. Jesus came to teach us that, by his first and foremost commandment. Sadly, not many of us pay attention to that and we get sidetracked with so many unnecessary, misinterpreted, and oftentimes invented method.
Not many teaches it properly the way Jesus wanted to.
“Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?” Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with your entire mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment.” - Matthew 22:37-38. This is the process.
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to
keep you from doing the things you want to do.” - Galatians 5:16-17
“We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”- Corinthians 5:6-8. We are spirit soul distinct from material body.
“The soul must wholly lose all human knowledge and all human feelings, in order to receive in fullness divine knowledge and divine feelings.” - St. John of the Cross…. Material feelings like passing sentiments is totally different from transcendental love for God. They are not comparable.
“Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can the perishable inherit the imperishable.”-1 Corinthians 15:50. …We are eternal spirits, not flesh and blood.
“Outside of God, nothing has any existence at all.”- St. Veronica Giuliani….

I think it points to the fact that Jesus had to be tempted just like us to know what our human experience is like. Could Jesus, who is God, truly deny himself? Probably not. But his humanity could experience the pain and hurt that the devil's temptations can cause, offering a perfected example of what humanity could look like.

You know things like "the devil makes work of idle hands" etc. I thought the devil was supposed to be viewed more so as the archetypal representation of the darker sides of the inner human psyche as opposed to like a literally evil consciousness, err... like a force of nature that is manifested by the fact that humanity is imbued with free will... you get what im saying, am I wrong?

Throughout Scripture, there is an actual being that tempts or challenges humanity. Jesus speaks of this being. He is not "evil incarnate" or an opposing deity, but simply a being so filled with pride that he fell from grace. Some have suggested that such a being is more archetypal than literal, but as I have suggested in this video, I don't care enough about the Devil (literal or archetypal) to dignify him with an actual answer to that question. Maybe he's a literal being? Maybe he's a manifestation of our own evil? I honestly have no time or room in my theology to give him any attention. As I said, I'd rather focus my attention on Jesus.

I have read that because Satan and the devils (who were former angels themselves) are pure spirit and are therefore not bound by time and space. The decision they made in the beginning- disobeying God, made them unforgivable because they were very well aware of the eternal consequences their actions would have caused. As opposed to human beings where we are finite and limited in time and space, we are still by God's grace given the chance for repentance and reconciliation to Him.

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  5 років тому +2

It's very important how we word this. We cannot "achieve" our salvation. Nothing we can ever do will ever "win" this from God or earn it above others. Salvation is truly only a free gift from God, something that we do not earn or merit.
The way I would put it is that salvation is free, but there is a cost to discipleship. Jesus gives it to us without caring who we are or what we've done. It is 100% free. But in order to accept it, in order to live in it, we might have to leave behind some things that get in the way.
Analogously, Jesus buys the ticket, but we still have to leave behind our old life, family, job, etc. and actually get on the train. We've paid nothing, but it required something on our part to accept the gift.

@@Diffman731 Except that, as I understand this, Satan is not in Heaven. As far as I know, he and his followers are somewhat schizmatic and he doesn't care about God or His law & realm. Some exorcists have reported "small talks" in which demons admit that the "establishment" of Hell was their idea. To conclude it, Satan wanted a private villa, so he 'gave them hell' ... and went on to build one.
With a few others, so he won't be bored.
I don't know whether or not he (and all the demons) can repent. But I love the 'Parable of the Prodigal Son' and I have no doubt that God would 'rush towards him with utmost happiness' in such a case. We must be humble with these statements, because we don't have a clue who is or is not "a lost cause". The mere existence of free will makes this option possible, however these realities are still unknown to us.
Satan is like the brother who is dead and lost. He left God's Presence, and that means to die; and he left God's Word, and that means to become lost.
We call the realm in which he now dwells "the hell". Just a reminder, in old Hebrew, the word that later on became "the hell", meant - a grave. So simple. Per his decision(s), Satan had fallen into his own demise and death.
And God Himself - and thus, the Bible - is (almost) silent about these realms. The hints that are in the NT are true and cannot be avoided in his actual state. Same for us. I have no doubt about that, either. However, do we know what it means ?
