- UPDATE:
Virtua Sonic is now LIVE!!
www.sonicfangameshq.com/forum...
Coming to SAGE 2020 is Virtua Sonic! This is a virtual reality experience where you become the iconic hedgehog, traversing original Zones, defeating enemies, collecting rings and, of course, using the terrain to your advantage to achieve high speeds.
This project's goal is to push the boundaries of what sorts of experiences are capable in virtual reality, showcasing the potential of the medium as it pertains to high-speed action games.
In my research, I have discovered that it is not necessarily motion itself that gives players motion sickness, but a lack of expectation of how that motion is going to behave. For example: a roller coaster VR experience is completely out of the player's control. They have no say in what they do and when things happen to them. Similarly, if a VR motion system moves a player in a way that they don't expect, that can also disorient them.
As such, so long as the player feels in control of themselves at all times, motion sickness should cease to be a hindrance to the player.
This experience will be compatible with all SteamVR-compatible headsets:
~HTC Vive
~Vive Cosmos
~Valve Index
~Oculus Rift
~Oculus Rift S
~Oculus Quest (Through Oculus Link only)
~Windows Mixed Reality
~Pico Neo 2 (Through Streaming Assistant only)
PAS (Probably Asked Questions):
-Will you port this to non-VR?
No. This was built from the ground, up with Virtual Reality in mind. Porting back down to a traditional perspective would result in an unsatisfactory experience.
-Will you port this to standalone Oculus Quest through SideQuest?
No. This was built using the SteamVR framework in order to reach the widest audience possible. Porting to Quest would require a complete overhaul.
-What's that black thing at the bottom right?
That's your (Sonic's) nose! (You can turn it off in the options. Don't worry.)
-Will you port Green Hill Paradise to VR?
No, for the same reasons stated above.
-Will this be made open-source like The Bumper Engine?
Unfortunately, no. I don't anticipate much demand for that.
I'm quite surprised by how many moves you managed to put in despite being VR.
Limitation begets innovation, my friend.
SuperSonic68 Is it coming to psvr
Vr opens up possibilities, not close them
Dude, No joke I had a dream when I was like 11 about playing a first person sonic game where I could like run up walls and it was freeing just being able to coast at such a high speed! I'm super excited to see where this goes!
As a Sonic fan with a VR setup, I am verrrry excited to try this
Incredible!!!! Sonic in virtual reality!!!! It's amazing!!!!! Please, launch a complete game, I'll be there to buy it!!!!
I’m so hype to play this next week dude. You seriously put in enough mechanics for a full game and I love the motions to trigger them. I’ve been wanting VR Sonic for a while and this is really impressive.
**Insert puking sounds here**
You can say that this game has endless possibilities
I see it.
"The game really makes you FEEL like Sonic"
Reminds me of ign "this game makes you feel like Spider-Man"
You know, I was very unsure when I saw you start up a Sonic fangame in VR and thought "Wow, this is NOT going to go well..." but watching you play, it actually looks very intuitive and well designed. Gear system is just (chef's kiss) perfection.
This makes me want to buy a VR gear. This is genius and amazing.
I can't wait to try this.
Now THIS looks interesting!
now this is sick, hope this goes good and good luck man
For Sonic VR, I think is so well designed, they put much thought into it on how Sonic moves.
Also, please "like" for center Sonic's nose.
Sonic's nose is centered. It just doesnt look like it because the screen is only showing us what he sees through his left eye. If it showed the other eye, the nose would be on the left of the screen.
I hope you add something were you can drift by putting a hand down to your side and leaning in with your hand so maybe you can do tight turns while in that gear lock state. I think it would be a brilliant move (if your able too) to make the game paid on sidequest so people can play it on quest
This move could be awesome. He said in the discretion you can play it on quest with oculus link
@@fashvr9961 I know but I have some friends who are big sonic that own a quest but not a good pc, the reason I said sidequest was that they come over to my house I can download games onto their quest.
This... is actually kind of genius. Like, this is something that'd go a long way in convincing me to get a VR set if it were a full game.
This is awesome man!!!! Thanks so much
In all seriousness, greatly done! I never thought I'd see a Sonic fan-game in VR, but here I am.
Wow, Simply Wow!!! This looks amazing! I am looking forward to this! :D
I am more hyped than I was for half life alyx
Looks awesome! Can't wait to try it!
This is seriously cool, totally needs more attention!!
I love this, it's so cool! Also love the thumbs up at the end lmao
This actually looks great... I hope it is finished so we can play one day!
Despite being in VR it actually looks good to control.
Alyx?.. Boneworks?..
@@yes5937 I never said VR games don't play well, I meant that despite it being a Sonic game it seems to control well in VR, because well.. It seems like quite a hard task to get a Sonic game playing well in VR, this guy looks like he's cracked it though.
As someone who has a really dodgy analog stick on their left rift s controller I'm so glad this has a Sprint Vector style of locomotion!
You've come a long way since those modded Blitz Sonic engines so long ago!
Oh my god, this is amazing! The controls are loads better than what other VR Sonic games do
Pure talent ladies and gentlemen
VR SONIC GAME??
we really are in the future
As far as crazy as ideas go, this one might be near the top
Beautiful, I cant wait to try some version
That is such a awesome project and if was just a demo I would so play it even if it had only one Level awesome stuff man love to see more of it
THIS LOOKS AWESOME!!!!!!!
This looks so fun! Can't wait to try it!!!
Also, just read the description, it's a shame it won't be open-source; I'd love to tinker around with this :(
Hope you will add options to hide nose and also I think the hands are too big. I hope I would be able to play it on my cosmos
Litterly you answered most of this in the description, sorry 😂
Oh my, this looks really fun.
oh snap this is really cool!
This is amazing!
Great Job!!!
Can’t wait to try this when the Rift S arrives!
THIS IS SO GOOD
This is insane. Great stuff. Now I just need to get a VR set. :(
Awesome work! Though I can't imagine it'd be totally safe to play; that speed would certainly cause motion sickness!
I'm loving this game. Good job!! ^^
Way past cool! 👍
Nice! I wonder if the sage demo is gonna have one more stage.
How is this Sage so hype already!?
OmG this is amazing I can finally be sonic
THIS IS ALL I'VE EVER WANTED OH MY GOD
This is awesome. I can't wait to see the final version.
It's a shame that I do not have VR headset.
ça a l'aire sympa, j ai hâte de tester
You sure are full of surprises xp. Bravo, once again
Also quick edit, do the rails have any balance physics? It doesn't seem so, but it would be really cool
Too good!
I think the hands are a little big, but neat little demo, always good to see some VR stuff.
Aww man! I wish i had a vr headset for when this comes out...
My only hope for this is two modes...the non running mode and a tread mill read feel free running mode for those who wish to get real exercise lol.
moi qui hésitait à me prendre un oculus quest uniquement pour jouer à beat saber, voilà une raison de plus pour craquer, bref, merci de partager ça avec nous, c'est très beau rien qu'en voyant la démo ;)
THAT IS SICK HOW ACCURATE IT IS
This looks really good. Cant wait to try this tomorrow. Good idea implementing the motion controls. Without the arm movements it would be very motion sickening. I hope this works with oculus quest using link cable.
That's amazing actually!! XD
it looks really cool.
Very interesting, I would totally play it! 😎 I think it would be really cool if you could possibly interact with other characters such as Tails and Knuckles, but I understand if this too difficult to do in VR. 😊 Really awesome stuff though. 😊
I just sold my Rift S so I can get a new headset (gonna get the HP Reverb G2 when it comes out later this year!), so I’ll have to wait until then to play this but it looks so awesome!!! Ever since I first got a VR headset, I’ve wanted a VR Sonic game and this looks great!
Now this is cool
looks absolutely amazing! I just got a htc vive! Will I be able to download this at some point? thx =)
This game really makes you _F e e l_ like Sonic
I can't wait till we get more stages, hopefully we get more characters and a boost option too! I hope sega hires the creator for a vr sonic game!
*insert surprised Pikachu face*
Heyo! This looks great! I’m actually amazed. Is it possible you could do a tutorial for how to download it on quest and rift when it comes out, still kinda new to my oculus link.
pretty awesome! im not too fond of that UV filter looking forest, just because of the colors. But the mechanics and the level design are amazing. Can't wait to try the full game
Really liking this, but i would at least put in an option at least to make hands small and make the nose invisible
Can't wait to try this on my Quest, hope my PC can run it
>Will this be made open source like the bumper engine
>no I don't anticipate much demand for that
BOI
Wow!
i know it been a minute since you uploaded this but im a frontiers modder and was playing this on my quest and would think it would be amazing to have the first and second stages be frontiers levels, if youre interested i would love to put them in the game :DD
Actually pretty cool.
I literally got my VR a month ago and now I am hyped to play this, also I love the music choice! Not sure if it's going to be in the final game but regardless I feel that this game will really feel responsive and fun to play! Though I saw you using Vive to play, Will there be Oculus support?
All SteamVR-Compatible headsets will be supported. Check the description for a full list of supported headsets.
@@SuperSonic68 Awesome! My headset has support and I'm glad there is plenty of support for even people who need a budget option like the WMR. Hope to see this game go far!
Oh god, i hope this is fun because i feel like I would get hardcore motion sickness hahaha
The mastermind did it again he just make sonic vr better
Wow, a vr sonic game?
Hmmm..., interesting, tell me more...
Why is the way he walks so adorable-
this is awsome
Time to buy a vr.
Bumper Engine v2.0
Is it an ACTUAL game or another physics engine to throw into the pile? Regardless, I have high hopes.
Lol this
I need someone to hold me! This is bonkers
Great concept, the camera is rather smooth but might need some more smoothness in order to reduce motion sickness.
The gloves and the nose are a nice touch, but some could get easily distracted by them, or they would get in the way, so would be cool if they could be turned off (or be more out of FOV).
And maybe FOV could be a bit bigger. Or maybe this is just how it looks in the video, while in VR it's just right, hard to tell.
Other then that, seems pretty cool!
And I assume it's Unity? Those shadows popping up into existence sure seem like Unity. But it seems to run smooth at least, and that's better for VR than triple-A state-of-the-art graphics, I feel like.
IMO, Sonic is one of the hardest titles for VR because of the speed, so yeah, good luck with figuring that out. Maybe it could work with more of Adventure-styled exploration/puzzle gameplay with occasional speedy Boost-styled gameplay sections. Still, can't wait for SAGE to try it myself :)
Remember that in VR there are two screens and this is only one screen, so Sonic’s nose would be in the center and you’d see 2x of the screen
Turning your (Sonic's) nose on and off is an option in the menu, so no worries there!
As for the shadows popping in, this was recorded at minimum settings to ensure a high framerate while recording. I am able to run at max settings on my min-spec PC (GTX 970) as long as I'm also not recording, so this is a highly optimized experience.
Thanks for the interest!
This is what I've been waiting for!!
But I can only sit down and play VR games with the Rift sensor in front of me.(so can't recognize my hands behind me)
Can this game be controlled with buttons and joysticks (or touch pads) only?
You'll be able to put your arms in front of you for certain moves to ensure that you don't have tracking issues.
Super if you feel like you have enough time in sonic bumper could you probably add water? and boosting and rails?
I'd love to play this in a vr
Btw if this will not be open source, will you at least make some stages for SAGE2020?
Mind providing an alt download? as the Sage page hasn't been working for over 10 hours now lol
Just out of curiosity, what are the songs you used in this game?
this is gonna kill me i cant wait
Awesome!! Huge sonic Fan here. Here's my 2 cents. Add the option to enable camera shake when spinning/Bashing and wen camera Bank when turning while running. This would give the game a more immersive/Action feel. Interested to know I you like that idea...Greets!!
I think motion sickness feers you more than you do
This is fucking awesome
Hey, anyone have any luck getting this to work on the Vive Cosmos? Can't seem to bind the controls at all. :(
BTW this is amazing and you did a fantastic job on this project.
Will there be a full stage at sage?
Man i saw a few people haiting this proyect. HOW THEY DARE TO HATE THIS AMAZING GAME
XD the nose.
A.K.A "Get ripped arms with Sonic."
Sega's version of anchor arms.
I'm not a hedgehog, I'm a jerk!
