    The headcannoning (saying Wensday is autistic) isn’t that big of a deal. You see that type of stuff in fandom all the time, generally it just effects fanfiction and art . But it crosses a line when they try to head cannon real people like the actor. Also OC means original character. They are saying that their brain turned the characters they made up real, which is suspicious at the least.

    • @rowan404
      @rowan404 Рік тому +25

      My thoughts exactly. Although I don’t think it’s sensible to headcanon _Wednesday_ of all characters as autistic, at least it doesn’t involve a real person. I’m actually autistic and I still remember someone on Twitter (so glad I left) headcanoning _me_ as 4’11 and calling me “smol” because, due to the infantilization of autistic people online, they thought that my _actual height_ (5’7) didn’t fit me. Meanwhile, headcanoning a fictional character’s height is perfectly acceptable since they’re not self-aware and many don’t have canon heights anyways. It’s basically the same thing but with mental attributes…

    • @steampunkfox42

      I don't mind the headcanoning thing but people tend to head canon Wednesday as autistic because of a harmful stereotype of autism which is autistic people being emotionless, heartless, and cold. The whole Wednesday thing is killing me.. I'm autistic and on TikTok and I just made a video about how people headcannoning Wednesday as autistic is literally going against everything we're advocating for. Society is constantly trying to portray us as cold, calculated, violent people, and we keep saying 'no, that's not us' but suddenly with Wednesday, now it is? Not only that but we're constantly trying to advocate for people not saying things like "you don't seem autistic", But then we're looking at characters on TV that aren't explicitly autistic and saying that they 'seem' autistic... I don't get it. Like I know that representation is important but autistic people are doing exactly what we don't want neurotypical people to do

    • @gay7261
      @gay7261 Рік тому +3

      I think it's different bc of this. People say others don't seem autistic because when they picture an autistic person they picture someone who is unable to take care of themselves. Maybe nonverbal, they have certain physical traits, people who are unable to mask. It's offensive to say someone isn't autistic because it invalidates their experiences and makes it seem like autistic ppl only fit into that box. With people headcanning Wednesday, people are seeing the same traits that they exhibit and relating or identifying with it. In doing that, it creates a sense of comfort and relatability.

    • @lunarcryptid
      @lunarcryptid Рік тому +7

      @@gay7261 I guess the way I see it, it's okay to relate to a character without them having the same condition as you. By saying that Wednesday, someone who is cold calculated and violent is autistic you're putting all of those traits on autistic people as well. You can relate to somebody but not relate to everything about them but saying that they have a condition, you're then attributing all of their traits to that condition... A condition that's already very stigmatized, and The people in that community treated as though they are cold and calculated and have no empathy. It's further for perpetuating the stereotype calling her autistic. Wednesday was raised in a very different household and in a very different manner than most people that's what makes her different and other than. It's very easy for autistic people to relate to her because of that, because she doesn't fit in, Like we often don't... It doesn't mean she's autistic though.

      i agree with you, except that what those people are doing it's not what stimming looks like. Autistic people sometimes need to stim, they usully won't do it in public, and certainly not filming themselves while doing it, but it can be really releaving during stressfull situations. It can even avoid severe meltdowns if done on time. Stimming is not being a baby or child, it's necessary. Even neurotypical people are doing it. For exemple, when people are shaking their legs when they are sitting while they are nervous, it is a stim to release pressure. Autistic people just needs to stim more. And stimming just doesn't look like what those looney are showing, like not at all. Stimming is not being "special" or "different" like they seem to think, it's part of everybody's life. There is already a huge ignorance around autism and stimming, they are making it worse, they are making mentally ill people ridicule, they are making fun of those who suffer and it's enfuriating.

      @@Cyntaria i think the best way to define a stim is a repetitive movement that we do for calming (different from a tic which something you can't control). Stimming can be a very odd and unknown word when it describes a very concrete thing. Stims aren't necessary as exagerated as they show it, we don't jump around flapping our arms for 10 minutes like they seem to do. Stimming can be anything : chewing, shaking your leg, taping your fingers, bitting your nail.... and again it is not only for people who have autism. A baby who happily flaps his arms is stimming, even if he is neurotypical and in perfect health.
      If you guys want to learn more about mental health, please don't look on tik tok. Those kids pretend to educate, but all they do is using your ignorance about mental health to gain attention. There are all using the same arguments : "mental illness is a spectrum, we won't present the same symptoms". Yes sweetie, but if you don't even show a single symptoms of the condition you're pretending to have in a convincing way, it's problematic. Recognizing neurodevelopmental disorder traits in family members makes sense when you got a formal diagnosis. My father is going to get assessed this spring for ADHD. If you think you might have a disorder, get assessed. Even if it costs money. You'd treat cancer if you had cancer, wouldn't you? By the way, here in France, some specialists accept to split the bill in monthly payments. If money is the issue, ask if that's possible.

I waited for years to finally be seen at the autism centre at my state's hospital. all the time spent waiting helped getting together all my info and medical records and also gave me time to be evaluated for other things that had to be excluded (like the mandatory brain MRI to search for other things, etc.). as annoying as it is, waiting also helps sort out the people who want a quick trendy diagnosis on the spot. and omg, I am formally dxd and now suddenly my father's whole life makes sense, too, so he's on the waiting list now, which I love cos he has always been the 'weird one' and has been severely depressed his whole life cos no one really understands him. so he can now finally get the help and also make peace with himself!

    she reads like such a textbook example of autism [or aspergers since that term is usually more specific, though it’s an outdated diagnosis / no longer used in favor of ASD] , this time with a goth coat of paint to match. it’s obvious that her behavior / behavioral patterns aren’t a direct result or mimicry of anyone in her family, because the whole schtick about the addams family was that they were this “kooky spooky family” who in reality were extremely healthy and functional. [if,, you don’t look at wednesday trying to execute pugsley. but only SHE gets to do that !]

    am i gonna make that her only personality trait and all i care about while watching the show ? f%ck no !! it’s so enjoyable all around. it’s something i literally didn’t even think about until i’d finished my first watch-through of the show and was like “yo. she just like me fr” and then MOVED ON FROM THAT THOUGHT because it’s not central to the story !!!!

      it’s obviously a lot harder to tell as a little kid imo, but if you just look at how she is as a 16 year old : the touch aversion. the odd speech patterns / mannerisms that are so common in “high iq” autistic kids that it’s literally it’s own stereotype. the massive empathy-inept attitude. the frighteningly extensive knowledge in things she enjoys or loved ones enjoy as an effort to bond with them. the obsessive thought patterns and disregard for anything that isn’t part of her current train of thought. the huge resistance to change and “comfort in your bubble” that often looks like stubbornness or hardheadedness. the fact that she is so particular about what she wears and seems to have a very small or very uniform wardrobe. the severe aversions to specific sounds and sights / colors. the general rigidity and difficulty in interacting with others and not understanding social norms, therefore not caring about them or how others perceive her.
      she is so autisms guys. /ref
      is there room for crossover or things just being because she simply has those behaviors / enjoys that ? oh absolutely. that’s why it’s nothing more than a headcanon / “i think she’s kinda like this yo” and i’m not out here with my copy of the DSM-5 for a character from a netflix show

This does not mean it is a diagnosis, simply a possible description for what *you* are dealing with. And I don't think it should mean you say you have the disorder, just that you *think* you do, and only say you have it after a professional diagnosis. Sometimes its impossible to get a diagnosis, and putting a name to it for yourself can help with coping and managing, which is why its okay to research and find something that fits in the meantime of getting an actual diagnosis or a professional diagnosis. Sometimes its impossible to get a diagnosis, and putting a name to it for yourself can help with coping and managing, which is why its okay to research and find something that fits in the meantime of getting an actual diagnosis. @@loonylink1127 one of the problems with this approach is that by doing a lot of research on something a lot of people subconsciously adopt behaviour of the disorder they suspect they have. It can happen when people get a diagnosis too, but at least then it's already established what diagnosis they have, and the potential treatment. If it's done before a professional diagnosis it can make that process harder and increases the risk of a misdiagnosis. And since all people experience things differently and we don't know how anyone else experience things it can also lead to mistaking normal behaviour as something disordered. Especially since a lot of disorders are really traits everyone has to a certain degree, but it's disordered when it's above or below a certain threshold. You might end up with a mix of symptoms where some are from the actual problem you have and the rest are ones you've acquired, and you might make yourself sicker. Also when you then surround yourself (even online) with people who also either have said disorder or claim to at least, you end up with a normalised view of the behaviours-- normalised as in the lines between actually disordered behaviour and normal behaviour gets so blurred it's hard to tell the difference. Behaviour that is perfectly normal might seem like a sign of the disorder, and actual signs of a disorder might get brushed off entirely. You adopt the group lingo and norms (this happens in all groups), and then when you compare with people not in the group you see differences that aren't necessarily there.
      Though I completely agree that living in the unkown and not having support is difficult, that's why healthcare needs to be more readily available to all. Self diagnosing is a bit like pissing your pants to keep warm unfortunately.

      @@Smulenify I think that is fair, although I also think what you are describing is an extreme. I have done a lot of research on c-ptsd *because* i was presenting symptoms, the symptoms did not increase after I knew what they were, I just had a name for them (i do have a diagnosis now). It is of course possible to subconsciously adopt behaviors from said disorders, but impossible to adopt them to the point of a disorder, which is why it is still valid to say that you think you do. A disorder is impossible to truly fake because it impacts your life to an extend of extreme discomfort, so while some people may have a decent crack at it, they cannot truly fake it. You know what's highly disgusting and offensive though? People claiming to be Autistic and showing stimming behaviors that are really just everyday habits. I don't think people actually quite understand that stimming is usually something done when a person is distressed. Usually due to social scenarios. And up until recently, it has usually been encouraged to help an Autistic child to try and deal with their distress/emotions in a more acceptable way. Because the end goal of helping someone with Autism is help them deal with the world around them better. This grown woman is making her "low key stimming" just seem so super quirky!

    Hey Ablaze,
    Just commenting to let you know,
    Around 9:45 you say something about how you’d fire someone if you saw this. As someone with ADHD I find stimming to be extremely humiliating, but needed sometimes. It’s a way to let go of a lot of stress and pressure. Ofc sitting down and recording it is whack, but stimming is an actual thing that people sometimes can’t even control.

    I'd also like to point out that when these people are saying "I'm stimming" or "Join me as I stim" and are just dancing or waving their arms & legs about. I don't think they fully understand that Stimming (from what I've first hand witnessed and been told by people) is when you're whole body or just the arms shaking/clenching & unclenching/uncontrollable movement that is nonstop. I've actually seen people stim at Autism Conventions over the years (some have spoken openly about it pre-covid times), it's a way for them to relax when they can't control their emotions and the environment around them (that is what I've been told by them, but can be different for other people).

    Just because a character has traits that are connected to autism won’t make them Autistic. The biggest example I can think of is Sheldon (big bang theory) who’s always been associated with autism however even the writers have said he isn’t .

    • @Phryzzle
      @Phryzzle Рік тому

      Fun Fact: The actor was telling in an interview, that he OF COURSE was playing an autistic person. The writers just don't want him to be autistic anymore, because this whole series makes fun of him. They want to be seen as woke and changed their mind after the series. So Sheldon is autistic. More like a cliche, but he definitely is.
