The original M16 had a thin barrel for a reason. A big reason the military moved away from it is that 60s/70s barrels had heat treat issues that could shift POI significantly once the barrel got hot. Significantly enough to matter at 100yds.
But with modern cold hammer forged barrels, the shift has been reduced to the point that it’s genuinely insignificant for 5.56, even in narrow barrels.

The military moved away from it because of bad data. They thought they were bending barrels during bayonet practice, a belief they thought was correct because the bore straightness gauge would often get stuck around the gasblock/bayonet lug area.
What was actually happening is there was a burr at the gas hole created during the manufacturing process that was causing a build up of copper over time which would stop the gauge as it went down the bore. They didn't find this out until afte the M16A2 TDP had been signed off on, and it got left as an "upgrade".

I was told that it takes mag dumping to get them hot enough for their groups to open up.
About a mag for a pencil. 2-3 mags for a hybrid profile type of thing where you have medium profile behind the gas block and pencil in front of it. And then it just goes up from there.
And that the opening up when hot might see your 1moa barrel open up to 3 or 4moa.
Considering the army considers 4moa combat acceptable accuracy I see the point in that pencil barrels from reputable manufacturers ought to do the job just fine, especially if you're lugging them around all day.
Fatigue and sway from a heavy gun all day long could throw your shots off far more if you're shooting unsupported.
But yeah, for bench rest shooting after multiple mag dumps (seriously who does this?) it's pretty irrefutable that thinner and lighter profiles open up more..

i HAVE cooked the throat out of a few different Benchrest grade barrels chambered for seriously overbore cartridges(NOT 5.56), and accuracy dropped off measurably, with the erosion plainly evident under a borescope - BUT those barrels were still good for many tens of thousands of rounds with a more than adequate level of "Fighting Iron" accuracy.
That said, i agree with you James; Currently among my most accurate hunting rifles is a Weatherby Vanguard(Howa) in .270Win, with a SKINNY barrel - it shoots into the 4s, free floated in a Knoxx Axiom stock (got it for my wife's use for hunting, she's a bit recoil shy).

This is not true at all! Your Mission should dictate the barrel profile. If you’re a new gun owner think about what you plan to use the weapon system for and let that dictate what profile and length is best. Heavy barrels tend to allow more accuracy for greater length of time. This doesn’t always occur but thin barrels tend to have a tendency to walk as they heat up. What he should’ve said was” if you plan on moving with your weapon or walking long distances get a pencil, fluted barrel, or hybrid barrel”. If the gun is meant for planking heavy barrels tend to be more accurate. All you have to do is Google barrel harmonics and it will prove Yeager was absolutely wrong. More mass equals less vibration thus more accurate, but ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain

I agree. I always thought that having a heavier barrel helped with heat, but I've never heated up a barrel to where it made any difference from what I could tell. I bought my first AR back in 1979 and we put 1,000s of rounds through them on our weekend get togethers. Heck surplus ammo was $89 a case and cheaper when you caught sales, so we burned through it like crazy. Now, I want to carry some thing that's light weight as possible.
I wonder if you could talk about "DOUBLE CHROME" lining on barrels and if it's worth it or what's the deal? Thanks, and keep up the great work.

And an 18" rifle length heavier barrel ( Daniel Defense DDM4vPro) now the DD shoots "better" especially longer range for me but that most likely is due to the rest of the gun Giessele trigger , Trijicon optic

The variables you list should absolutely be controlled for a true scientific experiment. This is my experience and nothing more. James recommends Midwest rifles. The last I checked Midwest was using Criterion barrels which are very high quality. I do not own any Criterion barrels. My experience is with Faxon, Ballistic Advantage, and BCM. It has a fluted barrel. I didn't care that it was fluted, straight, heavy or light. I know I. Never going to get it hot enough for it to matter, it's a bolt gun with a 3 shot mag. But my friend though I was crazy and bought the same gun with the heavy barrel because it would " handle the heat better". 7 years later and both with probably close to 1000 rounds through each. Neither is showing signs of significant wear. But his is almost 2 pounds more. He doesn't pack his away from the truck because it's too heavy. Mine is lighter, and better to pack with in the fields.
