The ‘Big Earthquake’ was the partitions of Poland, which ended in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth being wiped off the map and split between Russia, Prussia and the Austrian Empire (eventually to become Austria-Hungary).

First there were the West Slavic tribes.
Some of these tribes were united by Mieszko I, the first ruler of Poland. He was baptized in 966 and this is the symbolic date of the founding of Poland.
The first churches are built in Poland, and in 1025 Mieszko I's son becomes king. This is how the Kingdom of Poland is created.
There were plenty of wars. In the 13th century, the Duke of Masovia invites the Teutonic Knights to Poland. This is a German order that is supposed to cleanse northern Poland of pagans. The Order does this, but contrary to the Law, it establishes the Teutonic state in the north. Then there will be many wars with the Teutonic Knights. The most important moment becomes the Battle of Grunwald, one of the largest battles of medieval Europe. The combined Polish-Lithuanian forces are victorious and the Teutonic Order begins to weaken. Polska rozwija się w unii z Litwą. The famous Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus is shown.
The first tragic moment occurs in the mid-17th century, when the Swedes attack Poland from the north and at the same time the Cossacks in Ukraine start an uprising against the state.
Poland and Lithuania emerge from this war very weakened. At this time, Russia and Prussia, which became independent from Poland, are growing in strength. Poland's last success was the Battle of Vienna, in which Polish winged hussars under the command of King Jan III Sobieski defeated the Turks and saved Vienna.
After the Third Northern War, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth falls under Russian influence.
In 1772, the first partition of Poland took place. Pieces of Poland are taken over by Russia, Prussia and Austria. The same Austria that Poland saved decades earlier. The second and third partitions of Poland (1793 and 1795) liquidate the Polish-Lithuanian state.
In the 19th century, Poles started many national uprisings. However, Polish culture is flourishing, represented in this film by the composer Fryderyk Chopin. After World War I, Poland is reborn as an independent country, but immediately has to fight for survival with Bolshevik Russia. Poland defeats the Red Army.
In 1939, World War II begins. This war begins with Germany attacking Poland. Several days later, Poland was attacked from the other side by the Soviet Union.
After World War II, Poland was subordinated to the USSR, although formally it is an independent state.
    Poles repeatedly rebel against communism.
In 1980, the Solidarity citizens' movement, led by Lech Wałęsa, tried to gain greater independence for Poland. The communists introduce martial law. In the 1980s, the Polish economy collapsed. There are protests again, but they are no longer so ruthlessly suppressed by the communists.
Solidarity is trying to overthrow communism in a peaceful way. Negotiations are underway. In the partially free elections on June 4, 1989, Solidarity won. These were the first partially free elections in the Eastern Bloc. Tadeusz Mazowiecki becomes prime minister, the first non-communist prime minister in the Eastern bloc. June 4, 1989 is a symbol of the fall of communism in Poland. Then communism collapses in other countries in the region.
Exactly today is the 35th anniversary of the fall of communism in Poland.
Poland wants to join the West. In 1999, Poland joined NATO and in 2004, Poland joined the EU.
For 25 years, Poland has been developing the fastest in Europe. In the next 15-20 years, Poland may be the best place to live in Europe. International economic forecasts for Poland are very optimistic.
