Here's some things you can try to do on a clogged toilet.
The 3 most common things that clog toilets way to much toilet paper, the flushable wipes. I know they say flushable on them. But older houses with their cast iron pipe the wipes get caught on the build up on the pipes and they will stop up your sewer lines sooner or later.
Some of the things you can do is, once the clog occurs, let it sit for a couple of hours you know, three or four hours.
You can try a metal coat hanger, what I'll do is cut a coat hanger and try to bend it as long as I can and stick it up as far as I can to help break it up. The other thing you can
do is try flushing the toilet when it's clogged.
The more water in the bowl the more head pressure is on the clog and might help it push it out through. If the water comes up to high you push the flapper back down as fast as you can and that will stop the flush by pushing the flapper back down.
You can try a regular plunger or go to any hardware store and try a toilet auger.
However if you need to go to this step you may want to save yourself the time and money and call a plumber to get the issue resolved.
You also want to make sure the jets are cleaned out on you toilet. This is especially true for people on well systems with the calcium deposits.

Thank you for posting, this is very informative. What finally worked after trying multiple methods (we didn't have the auger tool) was a product we picked up at Home Depot called "Green Gobbler" for around $10. Just pour in the powder, wait an hour....and it cleared the clog! Hallelujah! I won't discount the fact that perhaps the detergent and vinegar/baking soda also helped in their way since the toilet was sitting overnight with those additives, although the toilet was still full before we tried the Green Gobbler. Anyway, I thought I'd add this comment for anyone who was at their wit's end like we were yesterday after trying so many methods.
What worked for a really clogged toilet, was the baking soda and vinegar, wait 45 minutes, plunge , (wait for water to get really low) then add really hot water with dish soap, then plunge.

Had a clog this AM. Used a brush to clean out the main jet along with hot water and DAWN dish soap I learned on another site. Main jet is faster than its ever been since buying the house used. Thanks a million. You saved me a $300 plumbing bill. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Why'd you leave out the dish soap and hot water trick? Worked for me after trying your steps 1 through 4, and saved me the cost of an auger or a plumber...

i've found that squirting in liquid dish detergent before flushing can help prevent clogs. but the best solution is get a toto.

hot water and dish soap and let sit a few minutes worked everytime for me and i work part time maintenance at a restaurant/bar so toilets get clogged pretty often
He's right dish soap and very hot water, let it set for 10 to 15 minutes, problem solved. Repeat if necessary.
Squirt dish watching soap like Dawn,give it a few minutes then get a gallon of some hot water and pour itin the toilet and let sit 4 5 minutes the water should be going down by itself if not then repeat if it starts going dn then flush it don't flush only if it is going dn a little you will b saying that is all that's it you will be a happy camper,dat dg will hunt!

I'm convinced the toilet isn't plumbed correctly, surely the waste pipe at the rear should be angling slightly down over, mine is running pretty much level, that can't be right, can it ?
I think our problem was wet wipes. I noticed water coming out of the base after a flush. went and got a wax ring, thinking that was the problem. the 4" pipe coming from the foundation had standing water at a 90" elbow about a foot down. Boiled some water in a 5 gal pot, SLOWLY poured it into the 4" pipe, saw it receding slow until the water was gone, filled the 5 gal pot again, poured it regularly and this time the water was going down a little quicker. Then used a plunger for a good 15-20 seconds on the 4" pipe and as soon as I lifted it, SWOOSH! Hope this helps someone.

Another trick to unblocking the poop shute ...... Metal coat hanger....bend to a metal rod....bend one end and make a hook..... Place hook end into the blocked area...... Down into the belly of Hell .... Pull out ....works every time !!!!
Insread of allen wrench, maybe a stiff bottle brush? I keep a few of different sizes just for bathroom.
Toilet will not plung. It has been snaked. Does not help. Any suggestions?

The first and easiest thing to do is pour a half cup or more of dishsoap in the toilet and then dump very hot water in it (not boiling to avoid cracking the toilet). Bam son. Done!

What was the name of the declogger solution that you poured in the toilet
This isn't anything negative towards you but I have never had it where a plunger didn't work til now. I have tried dish soap and hot water and it didn't work. My toilet is a mess if you know what I mean. I also tried vinegar and baking soda but that doesn't work. The water never goes down. On top of that the plunger I got off Amazon doesn't work. I should have gone to the store after it happened this morning and get a new plunger. Now it's the next morning and nothing has changed. I could cry but I dont want to bother my manager if I can help it so I'm trying to fix this. The stores where I live don't have those big augers so I guess I will try getting a small one. This is like the most irritating thing as a person to have to deal with.

I have done all that you have recommended, including letting it sit for a couple of days, a bowl fill of water and adding hot water from the sink. None of these recommendations have worked this time and now the second toilet is clogged. There is not paper in either one. I worked very carefully to avoid that. I will have to call a plumber.
