This song had several working titles, most notably "Everybody Makes It Through" but also "In The Morning" and "Take Me Home". Jimmy added multi-tracked bowed acoustic guitar to the opening while Jonesy used a VCS synth. According to Jimmy, they always knew what the construction of song would be, however he had no idea Jonesy would craft such an amazing synthesizer intro. To my ear, the beginning sounds almost like a call to prayer in the square of a far-off, ancient land as the synth notes snake in one ear and out the other to eerie effect. Then they lower the boom and it grinds into a gritty, slightly menacing groove from the depths of an almost sinister "somewhere". When the guitar comes in, it's almost like it gives the feeling of ascension; I definitely get the feeling of being lifted up out of the darkness and into the light. Zeppelin was never afraid to go to unexpected places. FYI, if you're curious, there's a version of "Everybody Makes It Through" on YT if you want to hear it. It's very different from the final product and has hints of Kraftwerk in it (at least to my ear).
You described exactly the sensation of ascending I experience every time - it’s beautiful and a testament to their mastery in storytelling and mood manipulation
Heh, funny how JPJ's keyboards evoke different "scenery" in people's minds. I totally get the Mideast images you guys have, but I often default to being put in a mind of seagulls flying over a lonely strand of shoreline. I had heard that about Jimmy being gobsmacked by JPJ's intro. I love when artists fanboy/girl out about their own musical idols, and I love the idea of a Zeppelin member, or Beatles, Stones, anyone, just being GLEEFUL that a fellow bandmember came up with something killer!
@@joescott8877 I truly think you can't help being occasionally gobsmacked by your fellow bandmates when you are *that* good. Seagulls, eh? I hadn't thought of the sound that way before; I suppose I can kind of see it. It can be very interesting to hear how songs resonate with different people.
@@joescott8877 I think this is exactly why the musicianship is so elevated with Zeppelin, each respecting and appreciating the others’ mastery and creations. It’s what I love about Zeppelin, their music allowed room for each artist to shine, not one trying to grasp for attention over the others, and when they come together, it is truly together as equals to create their special brand of walls of sound.
This song is one of my faves. ❤Thank you for hyping my favorite band. People need to know real music…Led made it with 100% honesty and heart and love. Where can you get that these days?
Love this one. The last part with the cascading guitars is absolutely otherworldly. I just noticed, I'm pretty sure Bonham doesn't repeat himself at all - the guitars may distract you from it but listen closely t the drums - he's just popping off, a new sequence every time. It's fantastic.
This song especially in the beginning sounds like the Legendary Prog Rock band YES! Yes had a huge influence on Led Zeppelin and many other rock bands at this time. Good reaction.
This is a VERY special Zeppelin deep track for me-a real jewel in the rough. There’s a condition known as “chromesthesia”, a type of synesthesia, in which one may “hear” colors and “see” sounds. In my mind, this Zepic evokes images of fiery orange, yellow and red.
This one side of Physical Graffiti, "may" be the best album side of all albums? Debatable for sure, but for this is top 3 for sure. Love the LZ reacts, keep it going.
I’ve come to really love this song. It does take you on a journey. JPJ actually plays the synth, the bass, and a Clavinet (the “medieval piano” sound mid-song). Jimmy also uses the bow on his Les Paul Number One to make the droning sound. Jimmy uses the Les Paul Number One throughout the song. It was recorded at Headley Grange so, we get that full drum sound from Bonzo. Robert’s lyrics describe a couple’s troubled relationship, as they take an introspective look at themselves. The woman is pondering their future: worried, anxious, and depressed, and sinking into despair. Her partner has experienced this before but ultimately remains optimistic, thus he wants to help her and says “In the light you will find the road… “Led Zeppelin never played this song in concert because it would have been impossible for JPJ to replicate the studio sounds of his synthesizer.
@@henriettaskolnick4445 I just double checked the Led Zeppelin book that has all the lyric and production info for all their songs. It definitely says electric. That’s the only way he could get the droning sound. He always uses it on the electric.
@@HollisDuty60 I've got a "story behind the songs" book also which states that it was multi-tracked bow/acoustic. At least we know it was a bow with a guitar lol. I'm looking into a couple of other resources and will let you know if I find any further info.🙂
From Kashmir to Egypt...😛"In the Light" has such an ethereal feel with the keyboards (it puts into my mind an image of seagulls flying above a wet strand of shoreline) and yet has that riff that's so nasty it could make a Pole Dancer blush, lol! Yeah, dude, I always say it's kinda cheating cos it's a double album, but whatever, PG is my favorite Zeppelin album, tho I love them all and it could change. But it's just got so much RANGE. 1&2 were hard rock as hell, but 3&4 have a lotta different flavors, you get their wide SPECTRUM.
I didn’t initially enjoy this one and often skipped it - my bad, it is now one of my favourites and a demonstration how great the musicianship of Zeppelin is. Every time, my spirit lifts with the music, magical song ❤
JPJ is using a Yamaha GX-1 synth keyboard. From around 1975-1980, synthesizers were like computers 15 years ago. Obsolete in 3 months when the next great keyboard came out with some new features (s). JPJ bought over a half dozen synths those last couple of years. This album was the first he was able to spread his wings a bit more.

To Mito here’s something I think you’d be interested in, I watched 3 about 10 minute clips of these. Behind the recording of Led Zeppelin I Mixing Masters On Line, it tells about what guitars amps etc. used to make this album. I don’t know all the instrument jargon, but I found it very interesting. There’s a part where The Beatles are in the studio, & the engineer asks if they want a listen, of Jimmy Page’s new band. You can hear The Beatles talking. There were also clips like this for two & four, I didn’t see one for three. If you give it a watch, let me know what you think.
Agreed but ... the next 8 songs range from sublime to 'a bit of messing around' and lets chuck it on the album - however I personally have come to enjoy them all. So you may find some highs and not so highs at first listen

Ten Years Gone is another amazing song on this album, not that they all aren’t great, some are even more standouts then others.

Kashmir is the middle Eastern song not this song! This song has a very dark spooky parts in it Jimmy Page lord of the dark strings as he was called
Just about as prog as Zep ever got....
“Night Flight” and “Boogie With Stu” are stinkers, but many here will disagree. Zeppelin’s stinkers can be counted on one hand.
Guess we’ll find out man 🤷🏾♂️
Not everyone will like every song, I have 2 I don’t care for. You can’t say that about other bands.
I have 3, Darlene, Ozone Baby and Bonzo's Montreaux, all from Coda, I love all the rest
one of zeppelin's best....its a pity they never did it live because of the keyboards jonesy needed....
