Arma is great but the engine is absolutely terrible. This series needs an engine change
@Keelan new engine already exists it's the same as the dayz engine and dayz's performance is great atm easily 100 fps in the cities on a mid tier pc
That is the sole reason I quit Arma. We were doing a milsim event vs another clan which we had a little over 2 hours of preparation + like a half hour just moving to the town. Then while I'm covering a corner an enemy comes blindly running through and my game froze... I was so pissed I uninstalled the game and haven't touched it since.
@Britannic hayyomatt It was a split second freeze like the ones shown in the video here. We were using limited mods for the exact reason you mentioned. This was also way back when the game was 32bit only so that could have had an impact on performance. Regardless I have had it happen in bone stalk Arma.
The new DayZ engine is fantastic, 144 fps I get on full servers. Where as the old engine (arma 2, arma 3 and old dayz standalone ran around 30 fps online). I really hope they use the new engine for arma 4 as its fantastic as far as how well it runs compared to the past engine.
No, your PC is terrible. The Arma 3 engine is the best Milsim engine on the market. In the guise of the VBS engine, it is used to train the US Military FFS.

The reason why i love this channel is this: There is no bullshit involved at all and myself being a huge Arma 3 fan i am a bit dissapointed by the review but i am thankfull for getting the truth about it.

One of my favorite games of the decade. In my top 3 RPGs of all time.
TheMaikiller I liked the combat ok on the hardest difficulty. Made it more necessary to plan before and and use spells strategically, and lots of dodging. But the controls / combat is not why I loved the game. It was the quest and world design. I loved just riding off in any direction and taking in whatever I found and it all linked up with really compelling stories and choices. See a cave? Go run in and it’s likely not just some throw away isolated side quests, but something linked to other questions and stories. Even the small quests were fun and interesting. Never forget riding along a ridge while the sun was setting in background and huge griffin swoops in and major battle ensues. It’s everything Assassin’s Creed or far cry worlds are not, in my opinion. Skyrim was the next best game at this for me. And this satisfying adventuring / exploring is one of my favorite parts of gaming, so I can understand if that is not enough for some folks.

The controller support being added in probably wrecked the optimization : p. The game knows its not right.
I'm not much of a PC player, in fact I exclusively play my games on the Switch but yet I constantly find myself coming back to this channel (almost daily) just because of how entertaining these reviews are. Full to the brim of honest information and delivered in such a unique way.
It's like I'm at the pub and that one northern friend we all have is telling me about games hes been playing this last week. Mack you should have millions of subs and I hope one day you do.
As an Arma veteran i think it is worth the money, but that is mostly due to all the new content (gear, terrain and vehicles) the campaign was good, but i feel like it was a bit rushed.
Gameplay wise it hit my expectations, although the performance was a bit lower that what i would expect from vanilla Arma, but not by much.
I would recommend it to anyone that has more than 600 hours in Arma.
This is what I like about Mack, the guy is fair in his reviews, even if he's biased towards something, the dude's real.

I just finished the campaign 10mins ago, i really enjoyed it. The engine is long in the tooth like mack points out, iirc the issue is that its a 32bit engine and runs into the memory issues associated with that. Worth the money i thought.
ARMA gives you a lot of control over the graphical settings, but you have to be careful not to overextend your hardware. Setting things to normal will have you running at a pretty good framerate with decent quality. If you try to set everything at max you're going to have some trouble once you start rendering forests and multiple units. The 200 x 200 km no-loadzone highly detailed terrains are things you really don't have in another game.
I found contact a bit pricey too, but I play ARMA multiplayer so, I'll use the contents. The story is unique and strays away from the old game tropes. It had a good number of jaw dropping scenes and a level of tension I've rarely felt in games. Wait until it is on sale and nab it. It is definitively worth buying at a discount.
Well that's the GPU part. Get shootouts with lots of AI and explosions, and say goodbye to your frames because CPU. Love-hate relationship, that's ArmA.

also its not a island in fact the Livonia in game is landlocked. I dont think there even is any large body of water on the map.... starting to think minus that one or two rivers is there any water on the map period.

Very fair review. I suspect a lot of people were expecting alien quake or some sort of Crysis type scenario which is not at all what Contact is supposed to be. I really enjoyed it but the performance was awful and it is expensive for what you get.

Worth A Buy I gotta say the dlc for that game is a bit ridiculous. Many things that should be in the base game are locked behind dlc. That said if you get the game/any dlc on sale it is all really cheap.

BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE is just trying to milk the last coins out of that game. There are no aliens in this DLC and most of the stuff u cant use in multiplayer nor in the editor. Check steam reviews before you buy!!!!!!

Something you forgot to mention about the editor Mack, is that the aliens aren't finished. Nearly all the ai aliens are broken and useless, not to mention the big alien ship (as of 2 days ago) is not present. The campaign wasn't my cup of tea so I won't criticize it, but i feel it's safe to say the majority of people who bought this and arma DLC in general, bought it for use in multiplayer. This dlc offers little more than reskins and a few new weapons and vehicles. The broken and lacking extraterrestrial faction honestly ruined most of the goodwill I had towards this DLC. At this point I'd just prefer a new arma but dlc is way easier to make.
The ship was there today and the ai worked fine, they were very immersive, I was running through the forest when one flew by so damn fast making strange noises, was great. I totally get the rest of your points though.

I am currently playing this scenario, only about a couple hours in, and right now I am loving it. The premise is cool, and the overall story has me gripped, enough to the point that I am willing to patiently traverse landscapes for a good ten minutes before any actual progression of the story happens. I will admit, the frame rate drops and choppiness is a big downer for this scenario, and is something I wish the devs would really look into for fixing. Something that has kept me playing is the immersion and atmosphere, it really has some horror vibes with it. The fog gives a kinda "what if" feeling when traversing the landscape all alone, wondering if some alien will come out of nowhere and kill you. Something I'm hoping in custom scenarios is a horror game, one that capitalizes on the atmosphere and fear of the unknown.
I bought this DLC during the summer sale for about $10, and at that price, I'd say it is worth it only if you have a bit of change lying about. I'll admit, though, the engine is pretty outdated for the stuff it is trying to run sadly.
A heads up. Ive been debelled off this channel. I had to select the bell again. Ive just realised Ive missed several episodes.

@@johnny5805 lol, why do arma fans in particular get so butthurt about their game running like trash? People with the 9900k can't get over 40fps in this DLC and regularly go under 30. Nothing changed except for some of the scripting and missions which aren't radically different from vanilla arma. That means it's bohemias fault, no matter how much you white knight for them.

It wasn't great but I didn't mind Contact. I got mid 30s to mid 60s fps on my 7700K with GTX 1060 6 GB system in 1080p. Definitely a thinking man's alien themed dlc.
The only thing that will help on the new map is to reduce object draw distance and view distance, otherwise it's hippo time.

Livonia or in other words the Livonian Confederation is currently split with its lands in different countries. Some parts in Latvia, some in Lithuania, and some in Estonia. Polands has parts that could be considered Livonian but wasn't part of the Livonian Confederation because of the Duchy of Livonia whose people were considered Livonian.

Last I checked it is still early access. This is what happens when you force your team to use a crappy engine. They could have done it all using a better game engine. Bad decisions
username they ‘finished’ it and released it complete in December 2018 - 5 years to the day it came out in early access. It still doesn’t feel finished although they did work fairly had on it in the last couple of years.

@Keelan That is funny, you mean the un-optimized Arma 2 game that would have assets just pop in, when your walking by it? I only have 2 hours in the DayZ mod because of that. I could not stand looking down at the grass and seeing flowers just pop in while running.

I bought Contact for the weapons, armour, drones and map with the mini campaign a bonus lol.
I also got the tanks dlc for free by buying Contact so it was more value for money.
Mack, you need to look at AMID EVIL and Ion Fury (previously called Ion Maiden), even if you don't WAB them I think there's an interesting discussion to be had in how people are still captivating what made the old shooters good compared to the travesty they're committing with one of the genre pioneers.
You can only love or hate Arma3.

Isn't 'contact' the verbal indicator for action against hostiles? When we saw 'em we would say 'sighted' and when we were ripping new arseholes we would say 'contact'. Seems the title is a bit misleadling.

I've never played the campaign in Arma 3 and I've owned it for years. All I've played is the custom servers and that was years ago. Arma is a unique game for sure and I am curious to see if anything can be done with this expansion as far as custom servers are concerned.
You can't play Contact online. it's a separate launch that doesn't use other DLC's or mods. There is sandbox multiplayer content but it seems not many custom servers are using it right now.

Drake Vandiver it’s Livonia which spreads across two or three of the Baltic States. It was conquered by the Livonian Order crusaders and then lost the land to Sweden later. I’ve not seen how arma 3 Livonia looks yet.

I was averaging 13fps in some parts of this. I feel like they had too many units spawned at a time which is what causes that lag in this game.
The story is good until you get to the part where youre basically wondering about with the map trying to find story items with a device that updates an underground map as you move. It got boring at that point but not sure of what happens after. Ive gave it a rest for now
Ah good old arma. The engine has always been a tad "behind", but to be fair, it's not an easy game to produce. Allot more variables like in most games, it is still a simulator, it's hard to clear out all the bugs. Also, when arma3 came out, you've had to have a pretty expensive machine to run it on full gfx settings. I think this is done on purpose, so the engine could actually be used for several years, but as you say, it's time for another engine!

Arma 3 is kind of expensive because they fill a very niche market of hardcore infantry sims, and it runs like a simulator more then a game.
It's a bit like Digital, Combat Simulator which is in the same boat, they charge $50 US per plane, part is because of the detail and work expected by their customers, and part because their customers are essentially captive with few other choices.
It's scummy but that's how capitalism works.

Its only a 20 pound add-on if you didn't originally purchase the supporter addition which includes all DLC and is great value.

I played Arma in the old days ( yes that golden era when gaming was great ! ) but it takes a great deal of effort and time. The developers should be proud of this game. It’s huge terrains, choice of weapons and realism are truly awesome. It has many campaigns, but is multiplayer co-op. You really have to be in a disciplined group with like minded gamers to get the most from it. At one point it degenerated into a haphazard shit fest of prepubescent teens running around killing everyone, just like some of those awful multiplayer games we have nowadays. You really need to form into a proper group on the server and stick with it for months to get the best out of it. I suspect this modern DLC is to attract gamers we have nowadays, adding a bit of sci-fi etc. But as you say the game engine is dated. In the old days of Arma frame rates would drop to around 15 FPS at some points even with a high end GPU. It still struggles. However I am sure many dedicated Arma fans are still playing this title and enjoying the military realism it offers.
If you buy Arma 3 ultimate edition and you already have the other DLC's you can get it for 15 quid.

Love the game but really hate the engine. As soon as some serious action beginns the CPU is on fire. Really don't understand why they refuse to update the engine. It's time!

Never had any problems with frame drops, it runs great for me, and my rig is as old as ARMA 3
On the official arma 3 discord the Arma 3 devs audiocustoms, Midnight and Dedmen mention that Drewsky and other youtubers edit their videos to show a worst performance that they actually get because ranting and complaining about games "sells" youtuber's videos a lot more than showing the "Reality". I hope that You guys get into the Arma 3 Contact Feedback Discord channel and screenshot this toxic behavior by devs blatantly lying about his content and then do a video about it!
