A radio, pfd, a safety whistle, and a wetsuit or dry suit, a seaworthy watercraft. This video is a perfect example of why you want all of those things on the ocean if possible.
Yup! You are correct, number one is safety gears to save yourself in case of any situation. The amount of people I’ve met who thinks it’s only 1 mile out it’s not that bad I’m not going far without safety gears is crazy.
I saw that you made it on the news! Amazing job my brother. Thank you for your kindness! Like always, good footages. Defintely the biggest thing you've ever caught and released lol.
Dude, you are a star, on national news. Hope you get some sponsor now. keep the video coming. Thank you for setting a good example for all of us kayakers. Way to go bro.
Men, you are such a nice person. 👍👍👍Thank you so much for saving my friend's life. I went out twice with him on that boat, and none of us had a radio. Now we learn and be modest to the ocean. Thank goodness.
You’re Welcome! Just glad that me kept yelling and that I heard him and made it in time, he seems like a nice guy too just needs a radio and where to not be especially in the fog. Yeah please do so and get a radio it’s a must for ocean to talk to others and to call for help it’s a very helpful tool. Glad he had on a PFD and that he’s safe. You’re Welcome!
@@rxonmymind8362 any large swells turn into waves in shallow water. The waves could easily overtake the side of any small watercraft. The reef is what caused the swells to become waves
The man in the porta boat caused his own problem… He was anchored, and a wave came over the bow, and he failed to cut his anchor, loose and bail his boat out… Now he’s saying Porter boats are not safe they don’t have enough flotation this is wrong Porter boat has plenty of flotation. He needs to learn how to use his ground tackle correctly.
good job dude. you earned my respect by saving the person. YES, life vest + radio + capability on communication on radio are necessary deal with a condition like this.
Thank You! It was my first time using the radio for help, usually I carry it for safety and communication to other kayakers but this time it prove to be top of the safety gears a must have at all times.
Wow what a bliss and bless that my friend got rescued in the end, all gratitude for you helping him out. He's fine and has to well prepare and think twice before the next trip on water
Just glad that he’s ok and that he kept yelling never gave up at any boat or kayak that came by, glad I heard him too and also that he’s wearing a life vest! But yes just be well prepared and have safety gears at least a PFD and a radio. Stick a whistle inside the PFD. Seems like a nice guy, just glad he ok.
Glad you decided to check what the yelling was about. Could have gone a lot worse. I will have radio, whistle, and knowing the radio stations everytime.
Right?! I really thought people on the jetty were just yelling like some do and almost went into the harbor. whistle to save energy from yelling plus travels so much better over water, radio a must and maybe a flag to flag other vessels down. Safety first so we can have fun on the water. Thank You and be safe on the water. Learn the topography reefs under creating bigger swells which took him down.
Won’t BELIEVE what a .99 cent whistle will save you. If you have kids make sure they wear one too while hiking or boating. This way in case one gets lost a whistle may save their lives.
Thank You! So glad that he kept yelling because I almost went into the harbor, just glad he is safe and that we all get to fish another day that we all got to go home.
Don't blame the portabote for this one. This is just an instance of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was too close to the breakers and got swamped. A kayak would have flipped there as well. However, not having a VHF radio and knowing how to use it is a big no no. Another is not having a whistle/air horn/flares. I would also stress to everyone that if you hear someone ask for a radio check over the VHF, please take your time to respond.
Blame it on not heeding warnings. Looks like there is a big DANGER sign at the launch ramp highlighting the hazardous area outside the harbor entrance. It's a pretty large area west of the entrance. www.google.com/maps/@37.5026266,-122.4777798,3a,15y,193.49h,83.06t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1skrHCi9w2sV6s8PULMA_QlQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
Those fishermen apparently did not have a knife… Cut the anchor loose that was pulling his bow underwater… Bail the boat out and go home no seamanship skills… Caused his own problems
Porte Bote really saved him here, boats that are not plastic are not as buoyant, even if foam filled that can water log, he was like that for 3 hours. I can throw my portebote in the water folded and sit on it and float around. Still want to know how he got in that situation though.
Just glad I heard him and found him before it gotten worse, please get a radio is a must it’s cheap around $110 for a nice floating waterproof radio, a whistle so he doesn’t have to yell to save energy and it’s usually a signal for help and travels farther and louder than yelling. Glad he had his PFD on! Sucks to take in water alone and no help for such a long time in that fog. Tell him to be safe and safely gears first. Hope he’s ok.
Did a swell knock him over? I had a portabote and it was fine in calm conditions. You can also download navionics onto your iPhone for $10/year. I’ve used my navionics at Capitola on a foggy day. Also bring backup power supply for iphone
Mark Muraoka yes, he said the swell’s height is like a house and he passed the first swell. The second swell knocked him down. Lol. I also have a white porta bote and this is my first time to hear that a porta bote fell in water. What I can say is he went in the wrong area (king rock) at half moon bay.
Good job helping out. I believe you’re supposed to stay on Ch 16 for emergency’s, listen for coast guard weather updates. Radio, flag, PFD, pump, Compass. 👊🏽😎
Thank You and just glad he’s ok. I was on key lock on channel 69 so I can keep contact with the other kayakers, but yes safety first and take all safety gears because never know when you’ll need it or someone else.
News people from all over started messaging me like crazy! So many stations and I’m here thinking I just helped a guy who was in need and hopefully everyone goes out with the right safety gears.
@@catchandeat i want to but the hobie kayak are so hard to keep clean and to pass inspection, the transducer pocket is so hard to clean sand and dirt around the holes plus the kayak has a bit a water inside from washing. I need to do deep clean and dry before I try slr.
Thank You Jeff! We have to help each other especially being on the ocean, safety and we all want to go home safe while having fun. Be safe out there and see you on the water
Good for you Nhia! Yeah, emergency coast guard 16, tows 9. Glad you're on the water with the rest of us. So... you had one on! Argh!!! I will probably be out there this Tuesday... maybe Thursday... or both?! Let me know what your schedule looks like bro! :-)
I was pressing the red button for channel 16 but had it on locked key button so as I was talking it was still on 69 till I turned it off and actually jumped onto 16. Just glad he’s ok. Yeah one nice fish in the 23-24 inch but lost it at the kayak drag too tight🤦♂️ Slowly but the salmon are coming in
Nice to know there are good hearted people like you to help others in times of need.. I have a question though coz i'm new to the hobby; If the coastguard saves you out of the water, do they charge for rescue operations?
Thank You and Thanks for watching. Fishing in a small vessel in the ocean is very fun and exciting but just make sure to have all your safety gears and even if you go with friends always bring stuff like as if your going solo. Self rescue and learn how to get back on your vessel. Help each other as we all just want to have some fun and eat some fish. The coast guard will not charge you, they are there to save lives and they are pretty awesome group of people. Stay safe and get a vhf radio, whistle, PFD, wetsuit or dry suit, a gps even on a fish finder is great to pin point your location if you don’t know where or even in the fog. Have fun and welcome to the hobby.
No you do not need to register, free to use, just buy a vhf radio that has good reviews. Learn your channels of which channels for emergency and which for open and which ones boat operators uses most so if ever in a situation you can radio over to a boat near by. Kayakers tend to stay on channel 69 here in California.
As long as you have the right safety gears like PFD for everyone, radio, whistle, other floating device, rope for tow Incase of a boat near by, flags and flairs you should be good and gps to tell them where you are over the radio. But don’t be afraid just play it safe, right gear and if the water/weather is doable. Be safe out there!
You were at the right place at the right time for you to rescue him. This is worth more than everything there is in this world. His soul is more precious and worth more than everything in this world. Your reward is waiting for you in Heaven. God you used you for this emergency and how your senses guided you for this precious moment. It is not his time to leave this world yet and this is also a great lesson for anyone who goes out there without proper planning and bringing safety equipment just in case. Great job and God bless.
I’m just glad I heard his yells and got there to help him out, glad that he’s safe and got to go home. Yes always help out and making sure everyone stays safe. Safety is such a big deal and a must when going out on any outing, prep like no one is saving you. I’m just glad we all got to go home. Thank You!
@@Adventurewithnhia I had to take the Boating Course online since my Kayak was modified with a Minn Kota motor. My Kayak is now considered a boat since it has a motor on it. Therefore, California requires a Boat owner to register my Motorized Kayak with DMV. A registered document of the Kayak will make it legal in California. Then, the owner is required by law to take the Boating Course online. Once the test is passed, then the owner will receive a Boating License. Studying and learning the Boating class is essential for the safety precautions when heading towards the Lake, Ocean, or River for fishing or just having fun. It's a must to learn even if it's just a non-motorized Kayak. Again, great job on the rescue and God bless.
Dude way to follow your instincts! My son did the same thing and we rescued 2 drunk women who had given up and wanted to die because they were so cold. Rescue training paid off that day!
Thank You!! Yeah I was like what is that? Who is yelling and why? Surely someone hear the person yelling, I mean people were on the jetty and people always fish from the jetties some has to know about the yelling. Luckily went and checked. You guys are Awesome and Thank You for being the good people who goes out of your way to help another or two others. Man that has got to be a scary scene seeing two people who had given up but glad you guys were there. Wow that could of ended so different. Keep doing what you do and yes rescue training and having the right gears to help others. I have some friends who don’t carry a pump and wonder why I carry it on my kayak at all times even in lakes, I follow with you never know who will need it maybe be someone’s kayak taking in water or myself. I rather have it then not have it and need it. Safety first.
Great job saving the guy and good video on how to use our vhf to call the harbor patrol. Big thumbs up. 👍. I will be in HMB tomorrow Friday trolling for Salmon , hope to see you out there if you go. I will be in my yellow hobie compass with my sidekicks, I will probably launch around 7 am.
nhiavangfoto It was very slow in HMB yesterday, I got 2 bites one was a smelt and the other probably 5-7# salmon. I was fighting him for 3-4 minutes and I kept the pressure on him by peddling fast and reeling my line, but he started to come towards my rudder line so I started to reel in my rudder line fast and that’s when he came off. It was a fun experience. No one caught a salmon yesterday in HMB, no birds dropping, no whales, no bait balls but I saw a seal follow me and black and white dolphin 🐬 jump near the entrance of the jetty. It was super warm so maybe that is why no salmon in HMB.
Water getting warm? That’s not good, that kind of sucks on the slow bite but it should start to pick up soon as they are finally within the area hopefully we catch some before they get too dark in color. At least you got a hookup and yea I was told to not worry about the downrigger just keep fighting the fish and keep moving and you’ll be fine. I stop peddling as I hookup and let the fish do all the fighting. Thank You for the report and hopefully I see you out there on the water, we’ll get some salmon!!
Didn’t want news attention, just for viewers to understand the importance of safety and safety gears and things that can help save yourself and others like a radio. Just glad I heard him and that he’s ok. Yup next Saturday!
I don’t know what would of happened if I went in any earlier, I stuck it out trying to get some kind of bite and doing my ending clip and glad I was there to help him. Shivering, soaked and no help that’s got to be scary I’m just glad I heard his yelling and got to him in time before the crash on the jetty. Was cool fishing with you.
Tony Huang he is not well prepared. Lost in the fog, using cellphone as navigation, went into King’s rock and flipped by large breaker. Lost cellphone, no radio, no wetsuit, and have to threw away all the gears. Glad you found him and saved him. Hope he learned his lesson.
Nice video. I have had a porta bote for years and i am very pleased with it! I am jyst curious, did you find out why his bote sank? They seem pretty unsinkable? I have seen videos of people dropping porta botes from 40 feet down into the ground and they did not break. Did he have a big engibe and slammed into something?
Thanks, yeah the Porta Bote is pretty much unsinkable but he went out during the thick fog with no gps and found himself in the no boat zone. Halfmoon bay has a reef or rock that pops out the water during low tide and when in high tide it’s dangerous enough to flip/sink boats. Swells were somewhat bad and for that rock area it’s really bad so he ate the waves head on and the second wave took him under. No gps to let him know he’s in the danger area. It’s not the boat but the person going beyond what the boat was capable of. He said waves was big as a house.
@@Adventurewithnhia yes i figured! I have been out in pretty rough waters in the sea. Not a pleasent experience. Water flooded in over the bow when going against the waves. The porta bote is pretty wind sensitive also. It behaves sort of like a leaf when it is very windy. I use my boat when fishing a small lake close to where i live. It is perfect for that!
I had a 14ft porta bote that I didn’t really used much as my kayak is way easier to travel and fish for my car so I sold it. They are a great boat especially for a foldable vessel! I owned and gave my buddy my inflatable kayak as it is like you said like a leaf on a windy day it gets blown all over the place. Porta Bote are great I just wish I had people to use it with. I always tell people to carry a pump to pump out water if any does roll over and in for both Porta Bote and kayak.
Thank You!! Yes I was very surprised too at how well it still float and even out in the ocean with waves it just sits at the surface. Porta Bote are pretty cool and very durable, he also made a good decision of ditching the motor and stay afloat than to have the engine and go underwater. I still recommend the porta Bote to people seeing it first hand in bad conditions.
@@Adventurewithnhia well im planning to buy one...doing some research on it and come across the video of your heroic act....i even thought he is the guy with the video on porta bote on half moon bay....btw whats the radio you said is waterproof and will just float? thanks
I owned one and am super impressed at the build quality but I sold it to a viewer a few months back as I never use it. But as far as the guy who sank his porta Bote when I helped him he had a GoPro on so you might be right? I might have to check it out. But as for as in the VHF radio I think almost all of them float but some more for protected with gaskets and seal from saltwater and some has more maybe foam inside to keep it afloat better. I have the Standard Horizon HX210 now and I like it a lot better than the one on this video. But all radio does the same it helps you talk with people around you and a safety line.
Don’t even sweat it, it’s a great boat! I see it all the time on the water with no issues other than this one time. I even owned one and sold it to a viewer and he’s killing it on ocean fishing with the porta-Bote. Great thing is it floats and you’ll never sink or be in too crazy of a trouble if you bring the right safety gears like radio, whistle, life vest, a hand pump or bucket. It was user error and user fault for getting into that situation in that condition. Every vessel has its limits just don’t go over the limit of that vessel. Don’t worry about it and you’ll be fine, always go on good condition and check your conditions throughout the day. A aluminum boat will sink once water gets in at least these porta Bote floats you’ll just have to do what he did and ditch the engine. Be safe, have fun and enjoy the new Bote
@@Adventurewithnhia No problem brother, I’ve done a lot remote wilderness stuff (and dealt with a few emergencies). You handled that like a pro. Good to see someone out there keeping a level head and continuing the work of the Bat!! Afternoon that video i definitely stopped shopping for port-a boats and switched to kayak shopping for my next fishing boat
I have an eight footer, and it will not stick. It will fill to the rub line even with my motor on back, but has never went under. Problem with the boat when it’s filled that much. very find balancing act to bailed out. For safety, I would recommend rubber bumpers under the seats I use old ones.
I have a 14 footer Porta Bote I sold to a viewer, it’s a great boat and won’t sink as long as you have all the factory foams still attached to the walls. But this guy went into a no go zone in half moon bay and two big sets of high swell wave’s crashed over his Porta Bote thus filled up with water. Bring a pimp and someway to lift the rim of the boat above water would help, but when I got to him all his stuff was all over the water and by the jetty. I was about to recommend some sort of tubes with co2 attachment around the rim and use it to get it a little above water to start dumping water out. I heard he bought a kayak after his boat sank.
Yeah I think I saw you too! You kept going in and out and back around, saw James got his so I try to not talk much and get at least on fish on before the fog gets any crazier. Luckily I stayed out trying to maximize my time for a salmon and came in and heard him.
how did the porta boat sink ? did he smash into something ? I thought portaboats wont sink and they do very well on the waves and swells. What happened here ?
Meril Mathew from what I heard by his friend is in the fog he drifted or went over King Rock. King Rock is a reef that is about 20ft depending on the tide and the water around it is in its 60-70ft deep so with a random swells like on this day a 5ft swell in 60ft is cake but over that reef can be over 10ft crashing waves scary. He went into the crashing waves and took on water enough to sink, if it wasn’t for his fast thinking of ditching the motor I think it would of been really bad. Lucky the foam on the boat kept him up enough above water. It’s like everything it’s not the vessel but the operator/captain, know what you can handle and where you are. Simple mistake that could of turned really bad.
A little late to the party but always interested to watch a video re safety and a rescue. Great job first of all being alert enough to hear the man's pleas for help! You did the right things by assisting and radioing for help. And I'm sure since this happened you probably now know what you could've done better: When you were paddling towards him, the moment you first realized he was in distress, you should of got on channel 16 and said "may day may day, one person in a green boat is sinking 70 feet south of the half moon bay jetty." Repeat that phrase over and over until coast guard responds. Other tips: look up calling coast guard on vhf and practice. By practicing, you will be calmer when a situation arises. Even if that guy's boat was only 1/2 filled, and he says he doesn't need coast guards help but he can't bring his boat in, I would call coast guard on channel 16 and report it. Even if it's not a distress call, coast guard is very understanding. You're just alerting them of a possible situation and where it is occurring so they already aware and on standby. Know exactly where you are and landmarks surrounding you so you can give coast guard a more precise location. Again, great job and enjoy your vids.
Thanks man! Yeah I watched many videos before buying a vhf radio and of how to use it, but when in real life situations and I’m in aawww like is this actually really happening? I switched to emergency button (red channel 16) but forget it was on lock mode on channel 69. Had to unlock the channel. I had to see if he was ok first and yeah even he was asking if I could drag him back in which I couldn’t. It’s one of those thing where you can prepared as much as you can and study but once it actually happens you forget how to do or act and try to do the best you can with the situation. I learned a lot just from this situation and I’m pretty sure he did too. Safety gears, knowledge and knowing how to get rescued or self rescue. I’m glad our fish finder these days has GPS and coordinates for a accurate location if ever out far beyond the landmarks. Hahaha I used to be like I watched enough videos and know exactly what to do if I was ever in that situation. Thanks for watching and comment. I’m just glad he’s safe and got to go home and fish another day.
Thanks! Yeah I was beat that day going all over and ready to head in and my radio was on its last battery bar so I was playing it safe. I really didn’t want to do extra work going into the danger zone but had to find out why someone would yell so weirdly in a known as a no boat zone. Glad he made it home. I used to think the same before I even thought of going into the ocean. But over the years you pick and choose the better days, calmer days, and what aren’t worth your life days. California coast is sometimes unpredictable with fog with forecast always changing. But with the right safety gears and making sure you have them on the vessel makes it easier or more comfortable going out in the ocean. Every year we hear kayakers flipping and can’t get in, kayakers lost their kayak, and kayakers getting blown off but with the right gears you can call for help. I’m just glad we have coast guards and people helping out people. Stay Safe!
@@Adventurewithnhia I'd be worried about what lurks beneath while you wait for the CG or other rescue organizations. The Port-Bote guy's situation was safer due to not being open to the deep from below. He at least could stay inside if the submerged craft. They will never sink completely.
I had a 14ft Porta Bote, clean looking boat and pretty cool, it can’t sink! Just a bit heavy on land and car top is a pain. But yeah amazing vessel especially a foldable boat, sold it to a guy in the Bay Area. I think it’s pretty rare to see sharks, I’ve been ocean kayak fishing for about 10 years and it’s been pretty safe from sharks. The sea lions are more annoying. I like to think it’s like bears and mountain lions, they are out there but the chance of running into one is rare, they see you but want nothing to do with you.
The anchor is obviously holding the bow under water. I have a 12 foot porta bote and it will float horizontally if full of water. Can’t believe how stupid the porta bote chap is!
He actually doesn’t have an anchor which at first I though so too, but it’s just a tow line and to drag the boat to shore/dock. It’s just a rope, he got lucky due to the floaties attachment on the porta bote or else it would of been all bad. Thank for watching. Giant swells creating big waves capsized his boat.
Thank You! Yeah it was weird to hear someone yelling. Like I was telling my friends I thought someone was just yelling on the jetty for fun. Other friends said they wouldn’t go as it’s creepy and that they don’t want to help. I just figured I’ll check it out and man was that something I never wanted to see happen to anyone, I’m just glad he’s ok and everyone went home safe.
Yeah it was a good foggy day and can’t really see much, I was asking people at work and people I know and I was surprised that a lot of people would not go to the noise and some said they don’t care and would just keep going their way if it was them. I would say what if it was you who needed help? Yeah I’m glad I went in to see what it was, and glad he’s safe and got to go home. The kayak brand is Hobie, the model is a Compass.
@@Adventurewithnhia my thoughts exactly. I would definitely investigate myself if I was in that situation without putting myself in danger of course. Thnx for the kayak info. Subbed.
I am new to kayak fishing and was thinking of saving to buy the Hobie Outback but I've decided that I 'm just going to get the compass so can get my feet wet sooner than later.
Yikes! 6hrs! Yea the fog can get creepy and turned around really quick. I kayak in the shallow once didn’t know you can only kayak during high tide, tide went out and I was stuck dragging my kayak back to the water. Yup got to have gps.
Looks like the guy didn’t install the seats right in the Porta boat The seats poped out and the boat folded up, You are supposed to pin the seats in. the boat comes with sturdy seat pins. That’s the only way he could of sank
My first Hobie, it’s the 2019 Hobie Compass. It’s really nice and also on the lighter end of the Hobie kayaks with plenty of room and speed. If you do decide to get it you’ll like it!
Oh Yeah! I love the coast guard, I see them helping out so many people over the years. It’s a blessing and always great to see and hear them, they respond to every distress call. Glad they were there to help you out. Awesome People.
Like all vessel we have to know what our vessel are capable of and what kind of conditions are safer plus knowing your body of water. Porta bote is still good but kayak is safer I think as it’s harder to flood but also each kayak is built different. I own the Hobie Compass 2019 model, great balance and very stable with good speed. You can keep an average of 3mph easy and top out about 5.5-6mph for short burst.
I own a porta bote but never used it, it’s so heavy but they work just like any other John boat just have to watch where you’re at and where you go. Like any boat know your limit. The guy from what I heard he went and bought himself a kayak after that sinking in the ocean. Kayak don’t sink if taken on water but if you take a hand pump you should be good on a kayak, I take my pump on every trip just in case myself or others might need to get water out.
Yeah they float pretty good, sucks that he had to ditch everything to keep it afloat even his outboard motor. Glad the quick thinking and the porta bote kept him safe and afloat long enough to be found. Thanks!
I do not know what you got to do to a PB for it to go down. it is naturally buoyant, so looks like he had anchor dragging the bow under. not knowing how to set anchor is very dangerous.
From what he said was that the front rope was for dragging his boat at the dock and if by shore, I even asked him and it’s not a anchor rope. Ocean guys usually use drift socks. It was just a bad condition day and he went to a zone that everyone avoids and he said a set of waves sizes of a house rolled in, he made the first wave but the second landed ontop of the boat capsizing the Porta Bote. If he had gps and avoided that area he would of been fine, but fog and no gps he was pretty much lost in the conditions. Porta Bote went down due to all his gears, he had to ditch everything even his motor to stay a float. Be safe and carry self rescue gears and gps to know where your at or if call coast guards they can know your location to save you. It weird I still remember this day very clearly.
@nhiavangfoto i own a pb and it is interesting to me to figure out circumstances. I understood that he got the bote completely filled with water, but why on earth did he not cut the rope? Pb would still float while completely filled. It would also be possible to actually attempt to bail the water out. 3 hours is a long time to try something. Looks like no fault of the boat.
He is so lucky you are there. I have lived 2 miles from the beach and l hear every year of someone dies on the surf. You should never go out in ocean with a radio life preserver, flares, whistle, etc. He is not have a port a boat out there too.
You are right, every year people go out not thinking of the dangers of the open water and of how fast things can change, I’ve been out on calm days and turned nasty in hours I can’t imagine being far out and not be able to come back in. I try to tell people about the same safety gears like you said and I tell people get a wetsuit or dry suit in case you fall in so you don’t get hypothermia or sting be jellyfish but people don’t listen. People go out in waders and that’s so sketchy. I can’t imagine what you hear and know of the amount of people need saving or life lost. Always safety first. Like in this video my battery was getting low so I started heading back in and go lucky I went back in when I did and heard him. Hopefully he buys some safety gears before heading back out. Thank You!
I agree with you, unpredictable. Fog rolls in fast and water conditions can change to dangerous situations with calm winds to over 25mph in minutes. Got to stay safe.
Haha yeah… it was my only day off and the swells and wind was low so I took a chance and after getting there seeing it was foggy. Driving close to 200 miles I might as well go for it haha.
It’s safe, just like any other boat know your limit. High swells or crashing waves can put any boat underwater, porta bote has foam so it will stay floating while in water might have to ditch the motor like the guy did to stay a float.
It blows all day everyday 24/7 so it’s a good thing it lets you know where you are, when you don’t hear it you went too far or for us kayakers that is.
Thanks! Yeah the Porta bote has the foam on all the walls so it keeps it afloat but only enough for buoyancy for a few people not with motor and gears.
They are good, works great, and floats like in this video although you might have to dump everything inside the boat as to the foams on the wall will keep you on the surface than sinking. It’s just not a good condition on this day plus not knowing where the waves crashes was his issue. Always know where you are at fog or not and every vessel has its limits just don’t go beyond your vessel’s limit and you’ll be fine. It’s a good boat. I still see Porta bote out there fishing with me or around me. I sold my porta bote to a viewer and he’s killing it on rockfish out in the ocean and in San Francisco Bay. I never bought a motor for it so it was sad to see it sold but glad it’s being used and fish coming from it.
I think it sunk, I’m not sure if the boat went sideways or flipped or if motor was screwed down tight, ice chest and other things floating by the jetty. Yeah motor is gone
I see Porta-botes in the ocean from time to time and on some days you see 3 or 4 of those on the ocean. Its all about going when the conditions is safe and know where you are away from dangerous reef that creates giant waves. But yes think twice before taking it into the ocean. I’ve seen boats capsized in the lakes due to whitecaps.
Good job! It's awesome seeing kayakers and boaters looking out for each other.
Thank You!! Yeah we all float the same on the water having fun catching fish, just making sure everyone makes it home and fish another day.
Good job helping him out! Way to represent the kayak community!
Thank You!! Radio and whistle is a must especially in that fog, just glad I heard him.
You're the man Nhia, you save a LIFE. That is the PB. A big round of applause for you.
Thank You and glad he’s ok and that we all get to go home to fish another day.
I saw that you made it on the news! Amazing job my brother. Thank you for your kindness! Like always, good footages. Defintely the biggest thing you've ever caught and released lol.
Thank You, just glad I heard him and went to check it out. We all got to go home.
Dude, you are a star, on national news. Hope you get some sponsor now. keep the video coming. Thank you for setting a good example for all of us kayakers. Way to go bro.
Thank You and just glad he’s ok, we got to watch out for each other. I will keep up on the videos and let’s all be safe out there.
@@Adventurewithnhia Be safe glad everyone is ok..cheeers jeff
Some wouldn’t have had a life vest. At least he had that.
Any word on HOW that boat sank? Those under normal conditions don’t sink. Strange.
Mad love for you in helping out your fellow man...your adrenaline was pumping and you handled that situation well...
@@zakn3954 he probably dis regard the weight limit on the boat
Great job saving his life brother!!
Thanks for saving my friend. He lost direction coz too foggy and floated to the dangerous swell area. He won’t be on water without a radio next time.
I was on key lock on channel 69 so I can keep contact with the other kayakers, but yes safety first and take all safety gears because never know when you’ll need it or someone else.
nhiavangfoto
Amen to that. Neat boat you have.
Nice save brother! Right in the nick of time too. Holy cow 3hrs in the water!
Yea 3hrs scary, foggy and jellyfish all over too, glad I heard him and went over.
Yep, safety on the water is serious stuff. Saw your clip on ABC30 news haha. Good to see you got about 100 more subs
News people from all over started messaging me like crazy! So many stations and I’m here thinking I just helped a guy who was in need and hopefully everyone goes out with the right safety gears.

Glad he’s ok and that he kept yelling, radio is a must.
Yeah one nice fish in the 23-24 inch but lost it at the kayak drag too tight🤦♂️
Slowly but the salmon are coming in
Your’re a Hero!! Thank you!
Just helping out another person in need, glad he’s ok.
Thank You!
@@Adventurewithnhia thanks for the info!
One last question, do you need to register your handheld vhf marine radio and how?
No you do not need to register, free to use, just buy a vhf radio that has good reviews. Learn your channels of which channels for emergency and which for open and which ones boat operators uses most so if ever in a situation you can radio over to a boat near by. Kayakers tend to stay on channel 69 here in California.
This is one of the biggest fears I have when I’m out there
As long as you have the right safety gears like PFD for everyone, radio, whistle, other floating device, rope for tow Incase of a boat near by, flags and flairs you should be good and gps to tell them where you are over the radio.
Awesome! Definitely a life saver. Great job bro.
Thank You, glad he’s safe and got to go home.
Right on helping to save this fisherman! this ncka member thanks you.
Thank You!! Just glad to be there when I did and we got to help each other.
Thank You!
I can’t this Friday but next Friday and Saturday I’ll be there. Fish on!!
nhiavangfoto It was very slow in HMB yesterday, I got 2 bites one was a smelt and the other probably 5-7# salmon.
Niha you made the news. dang 3 hrs in the water you saved his life friend. see you next Saturday

Tony Huang he is not well prepared. Lost in the fog, using cellphone as navigation, went into King’s rock and flipped by large breaker. Lost cellphone, no radio, no wetsuit, and have to threw away all the gears. Glad you found him and saved him. Hope he learned his lesson.
dang dude, respect.

Good Job Nhia. God bless you.
Glad I heard him and that we all get to go home.
It didn't sink, it's still just at the surface.
It would’ve floated freely had he cut the anchor loose that was holding his bow to the ground…
awesome what a heroic job! Wow! now its proven and tested that PORTA BOTE will just FLOAT and will not sink down the bottom when taking iin water!
My bad, new one is HX300
you mean you like the sh h210 than 310?
Great job....thanks for him.
Thanks! Just glad he’s safe and hade it home.
Damn!!! I just ordered one of those Porta-Botes!!!!!!!!
You'll notice it isn't actually sinking.
Always bring a knife so that you can cut your anchor loose
This guy is the actual person the batman stories are based on 👍. Just one dude floating around in his kayak fighting crime and saving people.
Haha Thanks Man! Just doing the helpful thing and making sure everyone gets to go home safe.
That's one thing I wont go cheap on. The Radio!
Yes!!!! Must have a Radio!
Safety First, yelling over the water vs call over the radio.
Bless ur heart! Goodjob
Just glad he’s ok and we all get to go home.
I was there yesterday.the harbor patrol asked if I called in a boat sinking.crazy.i probably seen you at the bouy.i was paddling a dark kayak.
Yeah I think I saw you too! You kept going in and out and back around, saw James got his so I try to not talk much and get at least on fish on before the fog gets any crazier. Luckily I stayed out trying to maximize my time for a salmon and came in and heard him.
Good man. I def need to hit the lake soon my Kayak has been in my garage for a few months.
See how the ocean looks in the following weeks, if it’s rough we can do some lake fishing.
nhiavangfoto hopefully my son is due in a few days I doubt they’ll let me do anything for a while lol
how did the porta boat sink ? did he smash into something ?
It didn't sink. It's full of water but still at the surface as they are designed to do.
Watch the video closer… The rescuer mentioned several times about the anchor line,
A little late to the party but always interested to watch a video re safety and a rescue. Great job first of all being alert enough to hear the man's pleas for help!
You did the right things by assisting and radioing for help. And I'm sure since this happened you probably now know what you could've done better:
When you were paddling towards him, the moment you first realized he was in distress, you should of got on channel 16 and said "may day may day, one person in a green boat is sinking 70 feet south of the half moon bay jetty." Repeat that phrase over and over until coast guard responds.
He was very lucky that you heard him and came to his aid. All of you small boat folks are insane for going in the ocean like that!
@@Adventurewithnhia I'd love to ride out with you on mine. Don't use it much over here in Texas.
nice job!
catch of the day!
Good looking out man.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Sometimes heroes don't wear capes. Sometimes they fish.
Thank You!! Just glad he went home and safe.
That gentleman was so lucky that you didnt ignore his yelling ( yelp). By the way, which brand/model of kayak is that? TiA.
Subbed.
Thank You for the subb, be safe out there and help others when it’s safe and not when your own safety is at risk.
Will do, thanks!
I am new to kayak fishing and was thinking of saving to buy the Hobie Outback but I've decided that I 'm just going to get the compass so can get my feet wet sooner than later.
Bro your vid made the news congrats
Didn’t want the attention from the news but they kept hounding friends for my contacts. Blowing up my feeds and messages.
nhiavangfoto yeah I see how it can be bothersome. Just keep making great videos your fans are still watching ✊
Never go out in the fog without a GPS on your graph I did that once At Martines Fishing and ended up on the sandbar for six hours
Yikes!
Giant waves crashed on-top of him twice. Sinking the boat so he ditched everything to stay afloat.
Oh ok , I better be careful out there in my porta Bote then.. Lol..
Is that a Hobie kayak?...what model?. Thx
My first Hobie, it’s the 2019 Hobie Compass. It’s really nice and also on the lighter end of the Hobie kayaks with plenty of room and speed.
If you do decide to get it you’ll like it!
Support your local Coast Guard. They pulled my butt out of Green Bay years ago.
Oh Yeah! I love the coast guard, I see them helping out so many people over the years. It’s a blessing and always great to see and hear them, they respond to every distress call. Glad they were there to help you out. Awesome People.
Great job!!!
Lucky for him....
Glad he’s safe and back on shore. I always tell people make sure they have their safety gear. Thank You!
Thank you
You’re Welcome. Just helping each other out on the water.
Yours looks like it is quick with only peddles. Having second thoughts on Portaboat. What are you in?
Like all vessel we have to know what our vessel are capable of and what kind of conditions are safer plus knowing your body of water. Porta bote is still good but kayak is safer I think as it’s harder to flood but also each kayak is built different. I own the Hobie Compass 2019 model, great balance and very stable with good speed. You can keep an average of 3mph easy and top out about 5.5-6mph for short burst.
I just Cancelled my Porta Boat Order!....Now im buying a kayak!
I own a porta bote but never used it, it’s so heavy but they work just like any other John boat just have to watch where you’re at and where you go. Like any boat know your limit. The guy from what I heard he went and bought himself a kayak after that sinking in the ocean. Kayak don’t sink if taken on water but if you take a hand pump you should be good on a kayak, I take my pump on every trip just in case myself or others might need to get water out.
lol i just bought a porta bote after watching this....it never sinks...just know your limitation same as the kayak..
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 good job brother
Thank You and glad he’s ok.
What model radio you have?
Standard horizon, HX 300 VHF radio it’s about $120-$130
What is your kayak brand?
Hobie is the brand, mine is the 2019 Hobie Compass
the porta boat is designed to float full of water looks like they do
Yeah they float pretty good, sucks that he had to ditch everything to keep it afloat even his outboard motor.
Thank You!
@@Adventurewithnhia thank you. The ocean is a dangerous place but If you take the right safety items with you can enjoy the ocean.
Yup!! Very True!
Respect the ocean.
Never know in the ocean......
I agree with you, unpredictable. Fog rolls in fast and water conditions can change to dangerous situations with calm winds to over 25mph in minutes. Got to stay safe.
GOOD JOB!
Thank You!!
Nice save. 👍👍👍😁
Thank You!
Do you know what caused his boat to sink?
He went into the reef area and high swells with high waves crashed over the boat. Luckily the boat floats.
@@Adventurewithnhia Oof! Well, he was extremely fortunate to have someone as experienced, attentive and prepared as yourself in the vicinity.
Yeah every trip has to be planned like as if something bad might happen, safety first and check all safety gears before heading out.
In the fog bro!?
Haha yeah… it was my only day off and the swells and wind was low so I took a chance and after getting there seeing it was foggy. Driving close to 200 miles I might as well go for it haha.
Is porta bote safe boat they say its foldable and never sinks
It’s safe, just like any other boat know your limit. High swells or crashing waves can put any boat underwater, porta bote has foam so it will stay floating while in water might have to ditch the motor like the guy did to stay a float.
Good job ! Learn how to use that radio. Ch 16 is for emergency’s just like that.
Does that siren blow all day, or only if its foggy?
It blows all day everyday 24/7 so it’s a good thing it lets you know where you are, when you don’t hear it you went too far or for us kayakers that is.
Great job ,you need a flag an light. Stay safe
Good man save life! How could a porta bote sink, and the porta bote seat looks like a pop off.. that is weird...
Thanks! Yeah the Porta bote has the foam on all the walls so it keeps it afloat but only enough for buoyancy for a few people not with motor and gears.
Are these porta boats no good?
My HERO!!! MY NEW GOD!!!!!! 😇🙌🙏
Where is the guys motor at?
I think it sunk, I’m not sure if the boat went sideways or flipped or if motor was screwed down tight, ice chest and other things floating by the jetty. Yeah motor is gone
@@Adventurewithnhia holy smokes. That's why I dont trust those porta boats. I have a hobie. I feel they are way more stable then those porta boats.
@@Adventurewithnhia and also I thought he didnt have one I wonder if he was just using a trolling motor
His motor is 60lb Suzuki 6hp. He threw the motor in the sea so that the boat with water can float a bit higher.
Tony I’m glad he did that because 60 pounds on that backend would of been bad, glad he’s smart to throw away the motor for floatation. Man what a day!
Harbour patrols...are abit slow..to pick up
I had it on lock on channel 69, so the first few calls was on the wrong channel. Had to unlock and went to channel 16. Thanks.
PLease think twice before you buy the boat for ocean use. Lake use, may be. Seeing is believing.!
Can't just own a boat and call it good, need to be educated with the boat and the waters your dealing with., Good job !!!
Right?!
Have the right safety gears and know your waters, when to avoid areas at different swells, play it safe.
Why is IT sinking?
Giant waves, big swells, water went over his boat and with big sets of waves and short interval swells not much time to get water out.
🎉
Thanks!
