If you were a Masked Lord, what kind of laws would you try to get passed? ;} Please consider supporting me on Patreon so I can continue to bring you the Realms for as long as I'm able: patreon.com/EdGreenwood
If it was up to me, I would try to pass a law to start to incorporate the area just outside the city walls so they wouldn't be a lawless slum. Mr. Greenwood, has there been any attempt to expand the city and/or expand the reach of the City out ward to form a more of a true nation rather than a just a city state?
A library and education law: more open libraries, associated with education open to any citizen, no matter their background. It would be tax funded, possibly with some contribution of whatever temple feels this is a worthwhile endeavour. People who are competent in something - be it woodcarving, spellcraft, various history skills, gardening, ... - can become accredited teachers and share their knowledge with anyone interested. And every library would also offer homes to tressym.

Thank you, Mr. Greenwood, for providing us not only with knowledge of a world we've all come to love and be thankful for yet doing so within a most entertaining fashion. I've but one small request, as I absolutely love lore especially when concerning Mystra, The Seven Sisters, as well as the rest of her chosen such as Elminster. This request being, if and when able, would you be open to doing lore videos on such induvials as well as their history, perhaps specifically Storm Silverhand, as I've a character I'm using whom has a close relation to her as well as the rest of the seven, a few of the chosen Elminster included, as well as Mystra as a whole? I as well as many others, find myself to be certain we would very much enjoy being able to view and learn more upon such topics, when and if you find yourself able and of course interested to do so. Thank you both for all that you do creating such wonderful entertaining content and lore videos it truly is a pleasure. Thank s you, Mr. Greenwood for continuing to shed, upon knowledge of this wonderful world you helped to create. Thank you so very much and please do take care!
I didn't know they were not all nobles ! Very interesting system. But without a salary, I don't know how a poor worker could be a masked lord and sacrifice time and income for nothing.
That's why you can refuse a Lordship. In practise, from Piergeiron onwards, poor Lords have been able to dip into expense accounts to live. The Open Lord prevents out-and-out corruption, but a poor Lord can live well and keep the proverbial wolf from the door.
My favorite of all the Masked Lords is the one anointed in Death Masks, made official Realmslore canon in said book, The C.E.O. of Acquisitions Incorporated, Ominifus Hereward Dran. Thanks for giving Penny Arcade this honor! And thanks for giving me such a rich world for my Waterdhavian noble family of Sharessan worshippers a home worth defending!
Ed, we need to discuss a potential article your video inspires in me re the Lords and their expectations re the Lords’ Alliance & patrolling the trade roads linked to the City of Splendors.
It's great lore, I can really imagine people in a fantasy world would try to solve corruption this way. The robes and masks being magic items to make the masked lord anonymous is also 👌 Were they always magical?
Oh, yes, this government is fragile and fraught with potential for corruption. I created it back in 1967 to be a source of endless adventure (intrigue, skullduggery, and occasional open mayhem).
i love that you have the parliamentary procedures/rules of order worked out. but shouldn't the position come with a mask and garments appropriate to the title, and probably a stipend for same, so that penurious (or noble, for that matter) lords may not be known by their dress, and, again, for the poor, be able to afford either mask or uniform?
Every Lord gets a mask, and any clothing they want, from the extensive wardrobes built up over the centuries, in the Palace. This extends to disguises. The videos you see here on UA-cam are shorter than the "deep lore" vids on my Patreon, so some details of necessity get left out. I recently recorded a lore video that ran SIX HOURS. (We have to edit!)

I don't know if Ed saw this yet, but, Baldurs Gate 3 has Elminster and he looks just like Ed. I thought it was a wonderful homage
I was kind of hoping Larian approached Ed to do some voice acting for Elminster in BG3 XD
I have voiced Elminster recently, twice, for two different games. Can't share any details yet, though.
Currently running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. These videos on Waterdeep are extremely helpful for me.
I hope Larian make a game based on Waterdeep after BG3
Would be great to see it in 10 years
nah i want menzoberranzan damn it larian dont tease me I saw the Signs ive seen the room in the house of hope you bastards

These are amazing videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤
Thank you. I've been wanting to hear this info for my dragon heist campaign! Also fills in a lot of the gaps not explicitly said in Death Masks. 😁🤘😎

You're very welcome, and yes, the Seven and Mystra and El are all on the long, long list of videos I Will Get To!
But you exposed the masked lords Ed. Does that mean your in trouble?😮
"Trouble" is the state I live in, all my life. ;} But Elminster is my friend, and so are the Seven, and they keep me alive. ;}

Sounds like a good fantasy form of government. Unfortunately I couldn't see something like this lasting beyond a decade or so in real life.
