When my wizard Zaganna was in a bit more of a chaotic mood, she decided she really wanted a way to sneak into Candlekeep. To bypass the 'no magical travel, only entry through the front door' part of the door she donated an illustrated collection of children's books with pictures of many different locations in the realms, including one of Candlekeep. She had enchanted it so that when she touches her copy and says the command word, it opens the doors on the linked book and allows a tiny illustrated version of herself to travel from book to book

Another way to go about Candlekeep could be to simply not bother with mapping it.
A place large enough and convoluted enough, especially with hidden doors, and possibly shifting mechanisms and magic, could simply be treated as impossible to understand or navigate for an outsider.
I'm sure we've all at some point been in a space so large and convoluted that we simply had no idea where we were, and would struggle even to retrace our steps. The two areas like this that come to mind for me are universities and a mall I went to once in a major city that was a couple million square feet with literal hundreds of stores.

Due to all of the moral panic, I might add. Libraries in general have had to adapt to the digital landscape since the early 00s but are also at least in part responsible for the Digital library model and database repository in general.

My adventurers are about to hear in there. Last session, we ended at the town of Beregost. They're in search of a tome that has the cure one of our players needs. Our wizard was heavily mutated by a sibriex, and even though most mutations were healed, the final one, her missing voice box, hasn't been healed. They know that this place has a tome than can help, and are on their way to find it.

I would really like to know how much impact the Bhaalspawn had in Candlekeep, since it was his place of origin. How much important was it in the history of Candlekeep? The most important event ever? Usually, as both player or GM, researching as a PC Magic User or including a wizard/cleric spell that copied books and mundane scrolls verbatim was something I always did. It just seemed like it would be a fundamental spell for a fantasy world. Wouldn't duplicate magical tomes or scrolls of course and it didn't translate anything, just a photocopy spell basically. Material component was ink, quill, and enough "paper" (my own world was mostly using papyrus and vellum scroll "books", like a Torah, still)

There's so much to this world that I love, thank you so much for these videos. I also always wanted to know what the systems are that they usually use for school for spellcasters. Is it mostly just wizards taking on apprentices, or are there schools or guilds that focus on bringing people in with talent and teaching them? One of the questions i got for you ED, has to do with...how D&D is portrait as a story line and history versus how it actually is in games. For example ... how can sarevok disguise himself and go in candlekeep in the game with tons of dopplegangers... how was he not clensed of concealing spells...how can such an evil being surrounded by evil beings in the places that holds so much knowledge on all these things? Secondly, was it always meant that the novels and story telling of the realms be more fantastic and layback then what would actually happen in the real world of the game or world?
The reason I ask this, is because I don't find that it makes a lot of sense how dungeons master portrait let say Vecna....as a level 20-30 lich that does 1 thing at a time and gets defeated by a party that is joking around a table and goofing off. I find most DM's or even in novels, to over simplify these extremely intelligent beings that if any adventurer would approach would be obliterated in 5 seconds or sent into this pocket dimension. Perhaps held in status or trigger traps that would unleash hell...or just have vecna use simulacrum and teleport elsewhere.
I find that most DM's or even some story tellers just want to create these grand story and narratives so that the realms evolves....but to be honest, why would beings like ZASTAM or Vecna...beings of extremely old age and high intelligence want to risk it all. They didn't live for hundreds of years by confronting everyone or just casting 1 spell at a time versus a 5 or 6 man party. In my mind its totally unconceavable to have anyone challenge Vecna...he should have 50 contingency spells and spell triggers...etc...

So much has been said there though. Honestly I haven't even gotten through all the old books on the place and the 5e book does a good job of referencing and building on those things as well. Lots of media for undermountain and waterdeep, but you are correct that what IS written leaves much more unsaid.

@@edgreenwoodofficial I’ve once read a short post of yours on Twitter I believe in which you briefly described the city guard commanders for each ward. They were brief condensed descriptions but I found them so insightful and so powerful on a narrative level that just opened a world to me. That’s the Realms magic, that’s your wise craftsmanship magic. I’d love to see a sequitur on that.

No offense but as far as I am concerned, 3rd edition is where I draw the line. After that wizards of the coast broke the game.

Like far east, shining south, utter east, hordeland and beautiful east (Ra-Khati, samphar, murghum, Khazari) and so on that we can buy in future... Any new source material that is not sword Coast would be wonderful.
