- Alright, I do get to see a fair amount of problems when I was working at a Brompton workshop. Every day there will be people walking in with different issues and needed some quick fix. Here I am picking some of them out for you. I hope you would enjoy them.
This video will be covering a Brompton rider bring in with an issue on the cabling. The cables were obstructing her way to fold and unfold the Brompton. Let's see if I can help her out a little bit here.
Love it all, go Brompton go!
Happy Brompton-ing! See you tomorrow.

I just brought a new Brompton but the seat is terrible and very uncomfortable. I go to a closer shop to look for a new seat for the bike ... and I bring the bike with me to test before I buy the new seat ... etc. The guy at the shop tells me the right brake cable is routed wrong and said he would fix it for free since I bought the seat from him ... etc. So he routes it so that the Brake & Gear cable (rt. side only) is now on the right side.
I test it to make sure its brakes and changes gears, I also make sure it can folds properly ... it all works fine. I take it to the park to ride the bike route ... and when I'm done, I proceed to fold it ... now it won't fold properly ... go figure.
Now ... I watched him re-route the cable and he had no problem. Just slide it off and re-route the wire on the right side. But when I proceed to switch it back and loosen the cable to take it off and re-route according, it is now too short to reach the end of the handle ... go figure!
Anyway ... I know you don't want to pull and stretch these cables ... I solved it not by removing the stem ... I just loosened the handlebars and slid it enough so as to be able to get the Brake & Gear through the Handlebars. Now the cable is back (routed) as it should be. *Now the moral of the story is don't let anyone make changes to your bike without the proper credentials.*
Hey Petrelli, are you doing alright? Whenever you are ready, a new video ist most welcome. I admire your knowlege about folding bikes and your video work!!!
Hello Petrelli, Martin here (Brisbane Brompton Club rider that had the cabling on the right side of the stem 😆) thanks for a great video about Brompton cable routing. All fixed 👍 Cheers!
Thanks for sharing this. To reroute the cable, removing and reinstalling the brake levers might be faster.
Petrelli love your videos. Hope you are doing well. When you gonna start doing vlog again?
Hi, thanks for sharing everything about brompton. It's been months you haven't uploaded new video. Hope you are fine
I am really enjoy watching your videos! Since this one, you stop making new? I am looking for more and study about the Brompton!
You are expert in how to properly maintain the Brompton. I gather the derailleur system comprises the chain tensioner with jockey wheels and the "chain pusher". These have to be kept clean in order to ensure smooth gear shifting. Do you need a bike stand in order to do this maintenance? How often should these parts be cleaned?
Been a while wondering if any move videos are coming soon, hope all is well
Perfect! Thanks a lot, Petrelli!!! I just replaced the headsed and I forgot to put the cabling at the correct size of the bike...!😅 ...I realized that at the folding moment... Uuups....!
So, thank you to confirm my suspects!
mine came back from Evans bike shop after a front bearing service with the same wrong routing you showed us how to fix.... luckily spotted and fixed with a sorry and red face at the counter when picked up
We all make mistake here and there, it happens to me too. Lucky we are having a lot of online resources to counter check if everything is good with our Brompton. Anyway, thanks for spending a few minutes with my video.
As a branded Bike, the best solution is replace a new braking wire for the bike, even the wire length may either shorter or longer. Most important is the the after sales service, to win back the client confident of the brand of Brompton. Nice video!
I just had to think this through at the shop when a customer wanted M to S conversion which just doesn't work that easily. With wider riser bar, M cables are just the right length.
This is gold. Thank you for posting this solution.
Excellent knowledge and presentation as usual - many thanks for sharing your insights ⭐️🤗
Hi Petrelli , can I suggest a video for installation or modify gear n breaks cable?
Hi thank you for the video. I wondering is it possible to replace the rear caliber on my own. Do I need to replace a new cable for it? Or continue to use the existing cable. Next, not sure it is possible for u to create a tutorial on that.
Hi, I am Kelvin, really enjoy your video. I would like to seek your advise whether are we able to change Brompton from M bar to S bar? Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!
Teflon is overrated. I used to solder the ends of my cables, but teflon makes it impossible. Thanks for the video!
Bro , No more videos? Pls post some when u are free. Thanks
You look very familiar- bespoke bikes at biopolis and before that at thomson (soo chow walk)?
Where do all these cables come from? Of course I can see but I haven't seen a Brompton with so many ad coming from every possible source and direction. There must be a better way of getting rid of the cable spaghetti if not completely than greatly reduced!?
Good info on a fix for a wiring mistake. Like the cool bike cap! What brand and where can one buy a cap like yours?
How about building a Custom Brompton without the 3 foldings ?
Great topic - thanks for the video. I have two questions for quite some time, maybe a theme for a follwo up video. I want to change the connection of the right and left brake lever. I found there is no correct option. Some say right handed people should brake the front brake with their right hand since it has more feeling and can brake more filigree. Others say it is the other way around because you have more force in your right hand and should use it on the rear brake. Either way it should be the same on all my bikes, so I would like to change mine on my Brompton. Is that possible without replacing them?
Secondly I would like to replace the housing for a littel weight saving and mainly for optical reason. How do I calculate the correct length of the brake cables and gear cables? Do you have any advice on after market housing? What do you think of these Link-Housing (Jagwire and others)?
Lot's of questions I know. So maybe worth a video: "How to replace my breaking cables" plus for many people it would be interesting how you replace cables if you swich your handelbar style and therefor the hight of the break levers.
Great channel - keep it up! Greetings, Carsten
Hey Petrelli everything ok ?
I have seen people upgrade the headset to Chris King or Tange. Is the objective for aesthetic, weight reduction or something I missed? Is it necessary to change away from original headset?
Hi Petrelli, what happened? Why stop vlogging?
Really love your advice. If you remove the front mudguard, I noticed the brake cable comes into contact with the front tyre, any hack to prevent that?
Find fender guard. I know that h&h product.
can recommend which reliable shop to go for brompton servicing and troubleshooting in sinkapore?
Hi, I've a question, i change my crankset to hollow tech lite pro brand, after adding a spacer on the drive side, my left side spindle kind or too short, too much clearance by at least 5mm. There's 2 allen key bolts to tighten but i can see only one is on the spindle, Is it ok?
Thanks for a enjoyable video.
any idea when's the next videos? His videos are good
Thanks,
Hi Petrelli, would you recommend a 2 speed gearing for simplicity?
Subscribed bro....good infos...me thinking to get 1 soon...
Hey Petrelli, I’m choosing between S or M type Handlebar. I planned to replace it with Mid Riser handlebar.
The question is, in terms of cables length after replacing the handlebar, which option is better? Should I get the M type? Which means the cables will become a bit longer after replacing to mid riser OR the S type as the opposite option?
Have you done it?
I have a S6L and want to get a low to mid rise handlebar. So I was told I need to change all four cables. It will have to be M cables or let the mechanic cuts the right length. It all depends no how much rise the bar is.
wondering where you are petrelli
I did enjoy the video but did feel you could have spent a bit longer on the images of the Brompton which would have let us visualise easier what you were talking about. Still got a like though.
No more new videos?
Ya hope I can pass my bike to you to mod if u are back in Singapore.
Hey, its good having you here again. I will be happy to just have a coffee with you guys when I am back to just chat about the Brompton.
Waaaaa back to Ubiiii
UBI rules....... lol
Ah! Your best cap! Ok, now i'm gonna see te video xD
Excellent Petrelli! I had a similar problem when I bought my old Tern D7i, with the exception that it was not a service that bundled the cables ... Incredibly, it came badly wired from the factory! But the solution was as is, fortunately very simple.
I add a question, if it's possible: Do mechanics at Brompton dealers and authorized centers receive any training by Brompton? Thanks a lot!
Far too much talking head and almost no demonstration of how to thread a cable. You are obviously an expert but this video does not help me install a new gear cable on my B.
Too much hand movement. Very distracting. There is no need to conduct your words with your hands. Otherwise, I really enjoy your videos. If I didn't like watch your videos I would not comment.
