- In the summer of 2018, mysterious black masks began appearing on advertisements all over the United States, accompanied by base 64 encoded imagery, source code, and QR codes. The puzzling guerrilla marketing tactic left some people curious, and they wanted to know more. Upon further investigation, they found themselves in the midst of a scavenger hunt that was partially digital, and partially in the material world. As the players began engaging with the challenge, they were led to the discovery of a mysterious musical artist known as Deathpact.

How did you first discover Deathpact? For me it was the Life & Death collab with Rezz
his performance on digital mirage. i've listened to that set probably hundreds of times since then.
for me it was in an underground club in vrc, where someone played a song of deathpact

I stage managed deathpact at LiB this year. He’s around 6’1” and pretty skinny. Based on his body movement, I’d say that he is in his 20s. At the least the person that I worked with. The security and process for keeping their identity secure is robust.
Oh that's sick! Thanks for the info! I'm curious if it's the same person every time or if they switch it up. I'm gonna dig into tour/festival dates and set times to figure out if there are any coincidences of x person never playing the same time/day as Deathpact. Personally I think it's a group of producers, and the person on stage doesn't necessarily have to be one of the producers, but they definitely could be. Before I made this first video I thought it was spearheaded by Zeds Dead with the help of some other Deadbeats artists, but after digging into the deathdrops I think it could be a pretty large group of producers behind the project.
@@audioeats hmmm, I don’t know. I personally think it’s one person and then he has used homies to have these multiple gigs.
The other interesting thing is when his TM was setting up his computer, he was remote logged into his Mac setting up his set and sync with the visuals from the hotel. Definitely an 1337 hax0r.
That's really interesting about his computer! I've been comparing tour dates of Deathpact with all of the artists who are thought to perform as DP (1788-L, Opiuo, ZD, Blanke, Rezz, Clozee etc) and there are definitely some interesting routing "coincidences" with some of them, especially for that November 4th 4 shows in one night thing. I've also been trying to match up DP's body language with those artists and DP's body language seems to change for different sets, and I've found some pretty convincing matches for some. If DP is any of those artists I've been looking into, then it's multiple of them and they probably choose who plays based on who has the most convenient routing. But I guess it could also be a totally random person that wasn't previously well known, kind of like Malaa. But the Deathpact project is way more complex than Malaa so I definitely lean towards the collective of people idea.

I would love if they can keep the identity an enigma. "We are deathpact" honestly hits pretty hard. All this searching, all these questions. What if we are all deathpact? It has a deeper meaning to many people including myself
I think Deathpact’s identity should be respected. A lot of the mystery with their whole bit is nobody knowing who they are.
I definitely understand that perspective. I think anonymous projects naturally elicit curiosity though, and speculation adds a degree of fun to the project. Plus Deathpact doing things like saying "Deathpact is Zeds Dead" at the end of Ether just shows that they're intentionally playing into that curiosity. Either way, they're definitely running a tight ship and I don't think they're at risk of having their identity exposed anytime soon.

it is quite evident that the identity of deathpact is a group of people or multiple dj's sharing the role amongst themselves. my friend saw him in atlanta the night before i did in washington dc... he was about 6 ft in her videos and in dc, deathpact was maybe 5'6 IF even. the deathpact that DC experienced, definitely had the rezz or so to say, "woman" vibe or the fact that it was a house dj testing out their bass at echostage. either way, his secret identity is what attracts me to their music. its like an adrenalin rush

Thank you! I agree, I also think it's a collective, but it would be insane if it's someone new. Everything I found during my research for the second video definitely points to it being a group, but I suppose there's a small chance it's someone we haven't heard of before. I'm finishing up the editing right now and I'll post it tomorrow!
@@audioeats That does seem to be the most likely scenario. I feel like the audio clip from batman "Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask" they use in almost every set is just too perfect for the Deathpact project. Which is really the only thing that points towards it being someone that is completely new. Keep up the great work! I will be on the lookout for part 2 tomorrow!
Yeah I love when they use that clip, I feel like they probably use it just because it fits with the whole mask brand though. I think if it is someone we haven't heard of before then they were either friends with Rezz or someone in the Deadbeats crew before they started the project.

Just went to Deathpact Hawaii!! OMG what a trip!!! Got a unreal photo with them right as they were about to exit the venue in their car… we ran up and they seem super stoked! Gave us time, deeply and legitimately hugged me and my girl and legit took 3 flash photos. Set was LEGENDARY… photos we’re LEGENDARY… we’re on straight cloud 9!!!! WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?!?!? Is this real life!!!?????❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉

The execution of the Deatpact project is unreal, so creative, well thought out, and mysterious. I legit don't know how people come up with stuff like this, endlessly impressive. And keeping their identities under lock and key in today's world is almost impossible as much as I want to know I hope we never 100% find out

Zeds Dead has always been my favorite EDM artist. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen them. Death packs sound is a blatant updated version of Hooks work. I put all my money down that it Hooks.

Is Deathpact Canadian? Lots of ongoing Canadian collaborations with Rezz, Zeds Dead, and Mau5Trap.
Very possible, their debut live show was also at a Canadian festival (Shambhala)

when it comes to Nationality we wont know,but all members of Deathpact are US based... i talked with Deathpact on discord... so thats how i found out that they are 5 members all Us based.

Has anyone seen more than one “ deathpact “ dj at a time . Like two people in the mask . I thought it was two at first then I saw one one time perform in Dallas but I do too . The scene was created / started with artists doing that to have dif styles under diff names ( example . U don’t want to pick up a Michael Jackson record and hear gospel . But if and when he /we made something different we we have an Alias good for creativity and growing the scene . I’ll wear my alter ego mask and perform twice in the same event without most knowing . I’m sure most

There were 2 deathpacts that performed together at Shambala, and there was one other set where 2 of them played, I think it was hard summer maybe?
Also a big name doing a side project as a unheard of artist allows them to go back to being in the underground scene which has its own appeal vs being a headliner at huge shows

From what I gathered interacting with them, I know that at least one of the member is fluent in French (exchanged DM on twitter and the answers were def. not translated).
So deathpact is heavily connected to Canadian labels and artists, debut was in Canada and someone in the comments who stage managed deathpact said they were 6’1… Drake is Deathpact confirmed 🤯🤯🤯

Ah nice I didn't know that! When I made the video I wasn't very aware of JMJ but after looking into him more it seems to make sense. Definitely a cool collab for Deathpact to have in his discog since JMJ is such a pioneer.

She has another side-project too similar to Deathpact called X1-Y2, I think it's just her & 1788-L who are imo the founding members of Deathpact, especially since you can hear Deathpact's signature voice on his album predating Deathpact, and for a long time they opened their live sets with 1788-L's Pulsar beam. Deathpact's first release was a collab, and you can hear her vocals and both their signature sounds in it.

I love Deathpact so much and I appreciate the lore explained in this video but after the guy said fucking JIF and not GIF I highly considered disliking it. I didn’t but I really thought about it. Also it doesn’t say that Deathpact IS Zeds Dead at the end of Ether it just says Deathpact AND Zeds Dead because that’s who released the song.
Steve Wilhite, the person who created the GIF format has said that it is pronounced "jif", so that is the true correct pronunciation, but the majority of people incorrectly pronounce it by sounding out the G naturally. I don't think it really matters how it's pronounced though, everyone will know what you're talking about regardless of pronunciation. Definitely seems to be a hot topic of debate though lol.
And as far as the end of Ether, even though the audio is highly processed, you can hear the hiss of the "s" from "is" - there wouldn't be a hiss from "and". Plus if you look up the lyrics on Genius, it says "Deathpact is Zeds Dead" - granted, those are submitted by the public, not the artist, so it's not 100% confirmed to be saying "Deathpact is Zeds Dead", but that is the general consensus on what is being said.
