This is what painting is all about!... making decisions, mixing the right value and putting it on the canvas with bold direct strokes...no narrative or explaining needed...the results are self evident...

Confidence and boldness are only one part of what makes good art. Children paint with confidence but that alone does not make for great art. These paintings are at the junior high level with very little understanding of color and color harmony, warm v cool, or neutrals v higher chroma. Let alone value and composition. There are so many super talented landscape artists out there it is mind boggling to me he has the temerity to put himself out as an instructor. Kudos for confidence but it’s a confidence based on lack of self awareness regarding his abilities/knowledge. It really kills me to see when there are so many genuinely great landscape artists out there that people could learn real skills from.

@@johncarmanarts thanks for all those words, and I absolutely agree with everything you've said. I'm currently applying to audit the local junior high art classes hoping to glean a few useful tricks of the trade from the students. I'll be certain to quickly create a youtube video to share what I've learned.

it’s HUGE!!! No joke, man. What an experience! What a workout! You transcended your whole being into this. Inspiring to see your approach; your marks, sparring with your brushes in a duel with nature. More than a capture, you killed it!

If you are enjoying learning from Turner’s videos then you should think about taking his online class. The lessons are very clear and his natural teaching style makes it easy to take in what he’s saying. I’ve been through the basics a few times before but it always helps to have a new presentation. My painting has really improved very quickly :)

I totally understand what you mean about the magnitude of the size of that canvas and although I don’t work on large pieces like that I still at times find the same for lack of a better word “anxiety” when starting a piece and thinking how am I ever going to finish this but then just like you did I persevere and sure enough it begins to take form.
I sensed a bit of a release once you did get all the big areas covered and then were able to grab small brushes and start putting in your amazing touches here and there.
I appreciate the fact that you take it serious enough for your own health and mental well-being to take a break from it and get reenergized good for you.

Thank you for sharing as usual! Watching you get out there and work inspires me and many others I’m sure! I can’t help but wonder though, why don’t you tone the canvas? I feel like if you pretoned in magenta or a cobalt turquoise or something kind of bold, you would be finished with the painting in the first pass, and subsequently retain as much of that essential energy you work so hard to impress with your brushwork on location. Anyway, we all have our methods and reasons and everyone is a critic. Love your energy, keep it coming!
