Great video George. My N57 was suffering from lumpy idle and random hesitations, especially when trying to accelerate from cruising speeds (like overtaking a lorry on a dual carriageway for instance). I traced the fault to the EGR sticking in the open position due to the actuation arm being worn. I replaced the valve, but the car was the same (if not worse on idle). That was until I figured out how to reset the EGR adaptations using the bimmertool APP. I also managed to reduce the EGR flow percentage with the software. Setting the value to 0.7 rather than the default 0.0 only allows 30% EGR flow. This has improved the way the car drives massively, without going down the route of getting rid of the EGR completely...
My egr adaptation on bummer tools was -0.20 and i have changed to default 0.0 but definitely I will try to set it to 0.7 to see if it's working better because with egr closed there is more power there 👌👌
The worst engine I ever seen in my life...bmws N47...mine I did timing chain 2 times ,and 3rd time I changed the whole engine, now the car caught fire..bloody diesel filter heater ,was the culprit.....now restoring full car.. Never gonna give up...won't leave her to escape from me.. excellent video George..

George, I have a US 2018 328d witn N47TU, I had rough idle when cold (but after driving about 3 miles, not when fully cold). Idle was fluctuating between 780 and 810, you could feel it and definitely hear it. I agree with you, traced it down to EGR. When EGR is off, smooth idle. Plug EGR back in, intermittent rough idle. US cars have electronic EGR, so no way to adjust like the vacuum operated one. A tune that reduces EGR use would solve the problem.

My dad’s N57 is blowing out air around injector 2 all others are fine. Small pool of diesel around it too. Has had new copper seat recut the injector seat and made sure the tube was spotless. What else could this annoying issue be

if you have stuck swirlflaps and faltcode accordingly, it wil also give ruged idle when cold engine, and N47 and 57 wil run dpf regeneration iiven if glowplugs or relay is broken, only m47 m57 have that problem.

Did a new service today and did look to see if the oil cap rubber is leaking wonder if when running it’s pushing oil up and out around the cap groves you can see on the neck that’s how I’m getting oil pools.

A blocked dpf caused my turbo failure , short journeys did it. BMW fitted a remanufactured turbo and did a forced regen as well as clean out oil fron exhaust and inter cooler, oil pipe, gaskets and seals, oil and air filter.£2750
same thing happened to me mate , was doing aldi and tesco runs only , but as its said , car needs to be on motorway to regen , i lernt the hard way , paid 890 pounds , lucky dint affect turbo nor intercooler

What type of tool did you use to remove the injectors. I don't want to buy the wrong kit. Mostly looking just to do it on the n47. Mine is showing black death on the first injector. But very small.

I have a bit of maybe a silly question but, is there any way to tell when the car is doing a regen? Im coming from a 2.0d Astra GTC where i would be able to tell like on standstill where fuel consumption would be increased and also revs would be higher on idle but also car would feel faster as its obviously getting more fuel. But on the n57 / 4 series, is there a way to tell?
Excuse me, I have encountered an N47 that went up a high mountain and the air was thin. After reaching the destination, the engine stalled and immediately started but there was no response. An exclamation point appeared on the instrument, but there was no response at all and the engine could not be started. It took 20-30 minutes before the engine could start. What is the reason? I cannot find out. ?
My car starts and goes to 1200 rpm from starts and runs at that all time 118d- comes up with crank sensor but it’s been replaced ! Any suggestions pls ❤ DPF recently out and cleaned Glow plug controller been replaced Ruining ok no loss of power acceleration is still good Turbo checked ✔️
Hey George, my car has 102,000 I’ve changed the air filters, fuel filter, and I run diesel Kleen every couple tanks to keep them clean. The only issue the car ever has is sometimes during idle it will fluctuate a tiny bit. The only other time is sometimes when driving I feel the car kinda “miss” a tiny bit. No check engine light. No codes. The only code the car ever gave “went away with a treatment of diesel Kleen” was a code for the injector learning being maxed out. Time for injectors?
Hi, could you advise me on my egr please? I'm not doing the delete but I want to clean it out on a regular basis. I came to remove just the egr today to start cleaning ,I removed the torx bolts from the top of it and unplugged the connector and so on but the bloody thing won't come out, I've give a couple of gentle taps with a hammer to hopefully break it free but it won't pull out, is there something I'm missing ? Its a 2010 e91 318d touring, any advice would be great , cheers
I’ve got a 2011 1 series coupe, 118d. My engine all of a sudden got a bit louder, but it doesn’t sound like it’s the timing chain. Engine light came on and the code said MAF sensor, DPF which brought up other codes etc. I also noticed little puddle of oil sitting around all my injectors so was wondering if all this had anything to do with my engine being a bit noisier than usual?
I find these videos helpfull. I have a 58 e90 320d and after driving for a couple miles she will start running rough, almost like it's missing. Iv changed the glow plug module. And deleted the swirl flaps. But still the same issue. It confuses me as while running rough it will inly last 5 min or so then will be fine for a period of time. Any help would be greatfull

I have no errors but the engine idles rough and shakes on cold starts when the weather starts getting colder. It stops shaking after a minute or two. Do you think that's the glowplugs? Also the exhaust smells really really bad after the cold start

Hi George. I have an e92 n47 177 Hp and in winter I have aome problem with cold start and rough idle for 15 seconds after start (and smoke) The car has dpf off and egr off. I did a check using ISTA and there are no errors. I did also a check on injectors correction and I founs that injector 4 has 3.4 correction exactly for 5 seconds after start and then the correction is going down. At around 1 minute after start all inectors correction is less than 1. Also at idle at 88 degrees coolant temperature and during running thr injectors correction is les than +-1. Could this be an issue to injector number 4 only at cold or it could be a compression issue on cylinder 4? Thank you in advance!

Always when cold start it starts with lumpy idle 800-900 then it stops after 3 min. Sometimes it does it also when idle at redlight, but very little shake. Engine n47. Dtc showes glow plug system activation error on cyl 1, 2, 3 and communication dde. I have replaced all glow plug and the dde glow control sensor. But it didnt help... cleaned egr, and intake manifold also. The last thing is the injectors i noticed quite a bit of grease and fluid next to the injectors. But can the injector leakage do something with the glow plug activation error??

got a n47 engine like you gonna do my injector seals then take it for a dyno run with swirlflaps and without seems like you and me are among the few that agree they should stay in the power is noticable low down and ill have proof send ya that aswell after it would be a contreversial video but nobody can argue with the facts

Hi. ive got an e90 318d n47d and when idling after engine warms up it starts fluctuating between 500 and 900 rpm. i had an error on egr but i got it replaced and now ecu has no errors an the problem is still present. Do you have any idea about what can it be? MAP/MAF , injectors, any control valve or something else?

Hey, George!! Thanks for video! I've got an issue of revs climbing in pulsing/jerking manner while accelerating (mostly in 2-3 and 4th gears). Torque converter changed - no jerking at constant speeds left (autopilot), but acceleration is still jerky. Should I be concerned about my gearbox or it's more of a fuel system/MAF issues? @@GeorgeAusters nothing unusual in the transmission. But there is 4th injector that is a bit off when compared to other 3. Will try to look up measures while driving on Monday
@@GeorgeAusters I looked it up with diagnostics while driving. at 1,5k rpm with very little push on gas pedal car starts jerking and one injector goes completely bad, mechanic says it seems that 1 cylinder starts to shut off at that point and other injectors try to compensate. However, by giving more throttle, car runs perfectly, mileage is also normal - 8.3L/100km. Any ideas? Thanks!
Just had to fit a new n47 turbo last weekend. Did a egr delete and got it mapped out. But then was going to remap the car had a backpressure fault and my dpf was blocked. Got a downpipe now. Just need to remap my car now before I can use it 😁
Mick Marshall going to cut open my blocked dpf cut out the dpf and weld it back together, downpipe was the cheaper and faster option for the time being
George Austers yeah I got my turbo to be sent off to be refurbished and they said that the actuator arm was worn but the bushing and crank arm within the bearing housing was excessively worn! Can’t wait to use my car again aha.
Hi George my e92 is shaking, I noticed that my intake breather pipe needed replacing I've done that but it's still shaking and it's going between 800rpm to 900rpm idling, what would you check next I was thinking the injectors

Hi George. I have a lumpy idle but only when it's cold outside like below 10°C and it goes away in like a minute or two when engine warms up a little, glow plugs have been changed already, no faults. Is that injector fault or something else?
Well that backed up MY theory on my rough idling when on a cold start. If it’s not been run for about 4/5 hours, then it’s lumpy with lots of smoke on start up, but if it’s warm smooth idle and no smoke. A bmw tech said he thought it was a bent Conrod. As I told him it happened after I went through some deep water, deep enough to hit the air filter and it died as I came out, so I clutched it (yes manual a real driver’s car)but was doing very low revs (6 cyl) so let it! Then sat for around an hour before it started, had tried every 15mins but nothing. But with a splutter it started and ran fine 40/50 miles home, it was the next morning it started with the rough idling and smoke. My thinking is that the conrod wouldn’t straighten after running for a few mins, and that one or more injectors are leaking so when it starts up it’s got more fuel to burn off? I’ll get to that soon as at the mo I’m replacing glow plugs and inlet decoke (what a ballache).👍

It's the sensor in the fuel supply line just before the high pressure pump on the back/right side of the engine, check the wiring is okay, if the fuel pipe isn't clipped in properly it can vibrate and chafe the wires 13537800670 search for this number and you'll know what you're looking for (note your's might be a different number, but should look similar)
My 318d n47 does chuck occasionally on the motorway and what looks like blue smoke 💨 comes out for a second then it’s fine, doesn’t happen when my foot is to the floor only when I’m cruising at 60mph. I notice it wouldn’t do it when there was very little diesel in the tank. I’ve checked the oil and coolant levels and everything is fine and looked around the injectors and everything looks fine. The car has a glow plug fault but I wouldn’t think this would cause a problem while driving. Anybody have a similar experience.

E91 n47 dpf and egr off..morning start with white/grey smoke and rough idle for 5 sec ish. 5 yrs now and still the same on cold mornings.. can leak off test be done on these injectors? Have some hoses and bottles i used on mondeo years ago just need to get connectors for these injectors if it could be done
I have a problem. 435d xdrive 2014. Starts and runs smooth from cold for first 5mins. Then it starts misfiring where the car shakes and produces white smoke with rich oil smell from exhaust. It has smoke coming from engine oil cap and oil dip stick. The aforementioned symptoms continues till it gets warm or stationary or if I drive it for a few minutes where it purrs like a kitten until cold again. I have taken it to BMW and they have changed 3 injectors as misfire from cylinders 2,3 and 5 were present. This didn't fix the problem and so they tested compression. Cylinder 2 had loss in compression and needed further investigation. Camera has found multiple scratches on cylinder 2 but was told engine would need to be stripped in order to inspect further. I'm not totally convinced. Has anyone experienced this??
I have taken it to a local garage that has shown me the injectors have NOT been changed as previously told by BMW!! He did notice the black death you mention in your vid. He tried changing the injectors around but still getting same error code 😕 George, I need your expertise pal.
Very efficient engine but has the same issues as the N47 and is harder to remove EGR and DPF. I certainly wouldn't bother with a modern diesel unless I was doing mega miles

Unfortunately the N47 doesn't match the reliability of a Toyota engine. A very bad decision from Toyota to buy this from BMW and fit it in the Avensis.

If you get your ECU tuned then you can get the EGR switched off and permanently closed

I find these videos helpfull. I have a 58 e90 320d and after driving for a couple miles she will start running rough, almost like it's missing. Iv changed the glow plug module. And deleted the swirl flaps. But still the same issue. It confuses me as while running rough it will inly last 5 min or so then will be fine for a period of time. Any help would be greatfull
Great chanel! Im thinking absolut bitning a 2015 BMW 116d. Its either a b37 or n47, not sure which. Are the n47 from 2015 ok? Or is it just as risky as the older ones, say 2007-2009?
Later N47 seem to have less chain issues in general but maintenance and oil changes are key👍🏻
Have a n47 and the car will have a rough idle then eventually turn off after several seconds. Can it be an injector?

I have no errors but the engine idles rough and shakes on cold starts when the weather starts getting colder. It stops shaking after a minute or two. Do you think that's the glowplugs? Also the exhaust smells really really bad after the cold start

Hi George. I have an e92 n47 177 Hp and in winter I have aome problem with cold start and rough idle for 15 seconds after start (and smoke) The car has dpf off and egr off. I did a check using ISTA and there are no errors. I did also a check on injectors correction and I founs that injector 4 has 3.4 correction exactly for 5 seconds after start and then the correction is going down. At around 1 minute after start all inectors correction is less than 1. Also at idle at 88 degrees coolant temperature and during running thr injectors correction is les than +-1. Could this be an issue to injector number 4 only at cold or it could be a compression issue on cylinder 4?

Always when cold start it starts with lumpy idle 800-900 then it stops after 3 min. Sometimes it does it also when idle at redlight, but very little shake. Engine n47. Dtc showes glow plug system activation error on cyl 1, 2, 3 and communication dde. I have replaced all glow plug and the dde glow control sensor. But it didnt help... cleaned egr, and intake manifold also. The last thing is the injectors i noticed quite a bit of grease and fluid next to the injectors. But can the injector leakage do something with the glow plug activation error??

Yep, fuel filter has a sensor which should heat the diesel. So I bought a complet fuel filter with sensor (400euro) and it fixed....

got a n47 engine like you gonna do my injector seals then take it for a dyno run with swirlflaps and without seems like you and me are among the few that agree they should stay in the power is noticable low down and ill have proof send ya that aswell after it would be a contreversial video but nobody can argue with the facts

Hi. ive got an e90 318d n47d and when idling after engine warms up it starts fluctuating between 500 and 900 rpm. i had an error on egr but i got it replaced and now ecu has no errors an the problem is still present. Do you have any idea about what can it be? MAP/MAF , injectors, any control valve or something else?
Since diesel engines have no ICV, so the problem must be anywhere on fuel supply system or the injectors

Hey, George!! Thanks for video! I've got an issue of revs climbing in pulsing/jerking manner while accelerating (mostly in 2-3 and 4th gears).
Torque converter changed - no jerking at constant speeds left (autopilot), but acceleration is still jerky. Should I be concerned about my gearbox or it's more of a fuel system/MAF issues? Thank you!!!

@@GeorgeAusters nothing unusual in the transmission. But there is 4th injector that is a bit off when compared to other 3. Will try to look up measures while driving on Monday
@@GeorgeAusters I looked it up with diagnostics while driving. at 1,5k rpm with very little push on gas pedal car starts jerking and one injector goes completely bad, mechanic says it seems that 1 cylinder starts to shut off at that point and other injectors try to compensate. However, by giving more throttle, car runs perfectly, mileage is also normal - 8.3L/100km. Any ideas? Thanks!
Just had to fit a new n47 turbo last weekend. Did a egr delete and got it mapped out. But then was going to remap the car had a backpressure fault and my dpf was blocked. Got a downpipe now. Just need to remap my car now before I can use it 😁

Yep turbo gets destroyed from DPF. Just had someone message me with exact same issue actually👍🏻
Mick Marshall going to cut open my blocked dpf cut out the dpf and weld it back together, downpipe was the cheaper and faster option for the time being
George Austers yeah I got my turbo to be sent off to be refurbished and they said that the actuator arm was worn but the bushing and crank arm within the bearing housing was excessively worn! Can’t wait to use my car again aha.
@@mickmarshall3517 put in the original downpipe, not that much work. Then put the original ecu maps back on and youre good to go
Hi George my e92 is shaking, I noticed that my intake breather pipe needed replacing I've done that but it's still shaking and it's going between 800rpm to 900rpm idling, what would you check next I was thinking the injectors

@@GeorgeAusters yeah soon as I get in car, I left it running for about 10-15mins and turned off and back on still same, it cut out yesterday aswell when I was at traffic light, it's automatic, planning on egr and dpf delete soon but want your thoughts on what it could be before I start buying injectors etc, I've cleaned maf sensor and solenoids

Hi George. I have a lumpy idle but only when it's cold outside like below 10°C and it goes away in like a minute or two when engine warms up a little, glow plugs have been changed already, no faults. Is that injector fault or something else?

Well that backed up MY theory on my rough idling when on a cold start. If it’s not been run for about 4/5 hours, then it’s lumpy with lots of smoke on start up, but if it’s warm smooth idle and no smoke. A bmw tech said he thought it was a bent Conrod. As I told him it happened after I went through some deep water, deep enough to hit the air filter and it died as I came out, so I clutched it (yes manual a real driver’s car)but was doing very low revs (6 cyl) so let it! Then sat for around an hour before it started, had tried every 15mins but nothing. But with a splutter it started and ran fine 40/50 miles home, it was the next morning it started with the rough idling and smoke. My thinking is that the conrod wouldn’t straighten after running for a few mins, and that one or more injectors are leaking so when it starts up it’s got more fuel to burn off? I’ll get to that soon as at the mo I’m replacing glow plugs and inlet decoke (what a ballache).👍

It's the sensor in the fuel supply line just before the high pressure pump on the back/right side of the engine, check the wiring is okay, if the fuel pipe isn't clipped in properly it can vibrate and chafe the wires

My 318d n47 does chuck occasionally on the motorway and what looks like blue smoke 💨 comes out for a second then it’s fine, doesn’t happen when my foot is to the floor only when I’m cruising at 60mph. I notice it wouldn’t do it when there was very little diesel in the tank. I’ve checked the oil and coolant levels and everything is fine and looked around the injectors and everything looks fine. The car has a glow plug fault but I wouldn’t think this would cause a problem while driving. Anybody have a similar experience.

E91 n47 dpf and egr off..morning start with white/grey smoke and rough idle for 5 sec ish. 5 yrs now and still the same on cold mornings.. can leak off test be done on these injectors? Have some hoses and bottles i used on mondeo years ago just need to get connectors for these injectors if it could be done

I have a problem. 435d xdrive 2014. Starts and runs smooth from cold for first 5mins. Then it starts misfiring where the car shakes and produces white smoke with rich oil smell from exhaust. It has smoke coming from engine oil cap and oil dip stick. The aforementioned symptoms continues till it gets warm or stationary or if I drive it for a few minutes where it purrs like a kitten until cold again.
I have taken it to BMW and they have changed 3 injectors as misfire from cylinders 2,3 and 5 were present. This didn't fix the problem and so they tested compression. Cylinder 2 had loss in compression and needed further investigation. Camera has found multiple scratches on cylinder 2 but was told engine would need to be stripped in order to inspect further.
I'm not totally convinced. Has anyone experienced this??
I have taken it to a local garage that has shown me the injectors have NOT been changed as previously told by BMW!!
He did notice the black death you mention in your vid.
He tried changing the injectors around but still getting same error code 😕

Very efficient engine but has the same issues as the N47 and is harder to remove EGR and DPF. I certainly wouldn't bother with a modern diesel unless I was doing mega miles
Doing aprox 10k a year just love the power delivery of turbo diesel.
Are you dead certain you want an F30? Have you considered a high spec LCI E90 with the M57? Could even go 335D

Unfortunately the N47 doesn't match the reliability of a Toyota engine. A very bad decision from Toyota to buy this from BMW and fit it in the Avensis.
