    Centrosome
    • Within the cytoplasm and near the nucleus, we can find a spherical organelle knows as centrosome
    • In multinucleate cells, a centrosome is near each nucleus.
    • Centrosome is made up of two centrioles and surrounding amorphous pericentriolar material known as matrix.
    • The centrioles are short cylindrical structure arranged at right angles to each other.
    • The centrosomes are microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs) that contain γ-tubulin.
    • The microtubules grow out of this γ-tubulin in the pericentriolar material.
    • When a cell divides, the centrosomes duplicate themselves, and the pairs move apart to the poles of the mitotic spindle, where they monitor the steps in cell division.
    • Centrosome is the point of origin of the mitotic spindle.
    Clinical link
Proper functioning of the mitotic spindle is a prerequisite for chromosome transportation. Inhibition with spindle poison leads to the arrest of mitosis and cessation of cell division. Spindle poisons include colchicine, which inhibits microtubule polymerization, as well as vinca alkaloids and taxanes.
